THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION POPULAR MUSIC WHEN NICKEL CREEK went on hiatus seven years ago, mandolin player Chris Thile said the decision was simply a product of feeling they couldn’t make a better album than “Why Should the Fire Die?,” the 2005 album that marked the third and final release by the trio during their initial time together. Now that Thile and his Nickel Creek bandmates, siblings Sean (guitar) and Sara Watkins (violin), have reunited after doing other musical projects, released a new Nickel Creek album, “A Dotted Line,” and started an extensive tour — including a stop Sunday at Jazz Aspen Snowmass’ Labor Day Experience — the trio has also learned another important lesson about themselves. “We don’t need Nickel Creek to be everything,” Thile said. “Before basically it was like a well that we would, we were draining it because we had to get everything that we wanted out of music from Nickel Creek.” Thile and Watkins siblings began to consider a Nickel Creek reunion last year. They realized 2014 would mark the 25th anniversary of the group. Initially, the threesome thought it might record an EP and play a few shows, but things progressed from there. “As we started working on new music, it’ just started coming,” Thile said. “So that was very encouraging. We were like wow, we might be able to get a whole record together. We’re all sitting there going I really like this. So we just got more and more ambitious with it.” Thile is eager to see how the public responds to “A Dotted Line” and to Nickel Creek’s live shows. If the response is positive, he feels he and the Watkins siblings can reconvene periodically as Nickel Creek alongside their other projects. “I’m just nothing but honored that our music made as much of an impression on people as it did,” he said.

THE ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS and the Wheeler Opera House have teamed for a free screening of “Particle Fever,” the acclaimed 2013 documentary chronicling the monumental discovery of the Higgs boson particle. A shock and an unexpected revelation I’VE BEEN HAVING a stare-down with Old Man Death for more than a month in Madison, Wisc., and the Grim Reaper predictably won out on Aug. 16 — the day my sister, Ruth, finally was able to shuffle off this mortal coil and head out for new frontiers. I should emphasize that I was the one trying to stare down the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, not Ruth. She had been locked in hand-to-hand combat with an invariably fatal disease for a dozen years or so, and had told me more than once that she’d had just about enough of that. So she finally decided to stop taking her meds and put herself in the gentle hands of the hospice organization. All I could do was stick by her side, along with our younger brother, Stuart, and help it happen with grace and dignity. I’m glad I did, and she was glad, too. Aside from surviving the soul-shaking shock of seeing a younger sibling give up the ghost as I watched, the experience left me with a surprising revelation — a glimpse of the innate goodness of many people, who despite not knowing me from the proverbial Adam have extended to me, my wife and my brother so much kindness and help it’s left me breathless. Now, this may come as a shock to some readers, but I’m a cynical, suspicious son of a sea dog by nature, who finds it difficult to simply accept it when strangers start talking about how much they sympathize, how deeply they care, how sincere is their compassion for the plight of someone in crisis. Right away, I start looking for the ragged fringe of insincerity and self-importance that I’ve too often found lurking beneath the surface in such situations, as I gird myself to go it alone. But the people who had gathered around Ruth, her neighbors and friends, came on like gentle warriors in a celestial pillow fight, and their sincerity, their open and up-front insistence that I accept their help, smothered my cynicism before it even got a chance to wake up and stretch its legs. Ruth, who was 60, had lived in the same house for 27 years. Ever since her 2002 diagnosis with pulmonary hypertension, which attacks the lungs and heart, she has courageously and uncomplainingly gotten on with things as the scope of her life narrowed in on her. Unable to work because she was on oxygen 24/7, she took up gardening, cooking, genealogical research and

home improvement as her major tasks. She also was a wise-cracking former hippie of the 1960s and ’70s, a leftist critic of her home state’s increasing tack to the political right, a ribald and caustic conversationalist and hard-partying consumer of a variety of cocktails (she used to love to brag that the oxygen allowed her to drink without worrying about hangovers). Those who lived near her were under the influence of her charm, her wit and her open, inviting nature, and they responded in kind once the chips truly were down. Two lesbians living a couple of houses away were the first to show up at Ruth’s door when I arrived in late July and Ruth went into the hospital. We had met and were friends, but until this all happened that was about the extent of it. With Ruth’s deterioration, they put their hearts into high gear and started bringing me food, calling me up to make sure things were all right, coming over to sit and chat through the difficult moments, and a million other little things. Ruth’s next door neighbor, a divorced and slightly wacky British transplant who also has lived in the neighborhood for many years, brought over books to distract me, took me to dinner at a local pub, and was so eager to help out it was astonishing. The man at the funeral home, who knew us only as consumers, went out of his way to be helpful when he could have been merely professional. Once he got to know us, he trotted out an off-beat sense of humor that Ruth would have loved. And as Ruth was dying on her last day, one of the neighborhood helpmates, Paula, came in and took over my deathwatch duties to give me time to walk around outside and clear my head. When I first got here in July, I was walking through a restored patch of historic midwestern prairie in the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and spotted a Great Blue Heron flying in ever widening circles and honking plaintively. My wife said Native Americans believe that, among other totemic attributes, the heron is a symbol of a need to reassess one’s priorities, reorient one’s thinking about the important things in life. Well, OK, maybe I’ve done that. At least I hope I have.

Colorado natives know to admire — and respect — the power of lightning.

WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES Growing up in Aspen left me immune to the fear of lightning, yet

respectful of its potential. Lightning flashes through the sky during evening rainstorms and while the Roaring Fork is named after the roar of the river, the roar of thunder echoes off the walls of that narrow valley and sets your nerves on edge. My California cousin visited Aspen for a few weeks each summer. He was older and bigger than I and so it slightly amused me when lightning storms terrorized him. He found the storms especially frightening when they rolled in during late evening. Nighttime drove us inside, where lightening would flash against the dark walls, its surprising sudden brightness pounded home with bone-rattling thunderclaps. Streaks of lightning that continued for over an hour comprised the best nighttime entertainment in the years before Aspen had television. If you have spent much time above timberline you know the feeling of electricity that can permeate the air during a thunderstorm. You body stands at attention. When you become aware that no trees stick up — just your head — you know it is time to retreat to lower elevation. There is a reason why one of the high ridge points of the Castle Creek area is named Electric Peak, and if you have ever climbed Taylor Peak you

In the 1930s my mother was, in the parlance of her time, “being courted” by Kris Karde. Christopher Karde was, like my mother, an Aspen native who went through the Aspen schools. Karde was considered a great catch, Aspen’s most eligible bachelor. After inheriting his parents’ McLainn Flats ranch at a very young age, he had become the spokesperson for area ranchers.

to load the truck with potatoes from the cellar and wait for him there, as he would be along shortly. A thunderstorm came up quickly and Smith sat out the storm. After a couple of hours, knowing Karde should have returned, Smith walked to the house to look for him. Not finding Karde there, Smith and another employee began a search, suspecting something had gone wrong. They found Karde’s faithful pet, a

dog that rarely left his side. The dog kept walking away and then turning back to look at them, so they followed it. The dog led them to Karde, who lay dead beneath a tree. They called for help, and the men determined Karde had moved under the tree to shelter from the storm. Lightning had struck the tree, traveled toward the trunk, and leaped from there to Karde’s neck. He died instantly. Later they found Karde’s watch yards away from where his body had been. The stopped hands marked his time of death, 4:04 p.m. News of Karde’s death shocked the community. The night before, Karde had been elected a county delegate to the Republican state assembly, and he had agreed to run as the party candidate for county commissioner in the upcoming election. A few years before Karde’s death, my mother had decided she did not want to become a rancher’s wife and had married my father. Nonetheless, Karde’s accident haunted her with the thought of how quickly a twist of fate can change lives. At the beginning of every summer, Mother would remind me of Karde’s lightning encounter and then warn me to never take refuge under a tree during a thunderstorm. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. 1950 A S P E N S U N DE C K

ON JULY 1, 1960, the Aspen Daily Times announced a contest put on by Aspen Highlands with a headline proclaiming: “$500 buried treasure hunt starts today.” According to the paper, “a promotion scheme introduced today by the Aspen Highlands will result in some person finding a $500 cash treasure sometime during the next few weeks. Details of the novel publicity project were announced today in an advertisement in this issue of the Aspen Times. According to Aspen Highland officials, a medallion with the insignia of the resort embossed upon it has been hidden just below the surface of the ground somewhere on the upper slopes of the mountain. The person finding the medallion will be given $500 in cash if he has a valid Highlands lift ticket. Clues to the location of the treasure are listed in the ad in this paper. If the treasure is not found this week additional clues will be given next week to lead hunters yet closer to the buried medallion. The first clue, in rhyme like the rest, tells the cash seekers that ‘A ride on the world’s longest double chairlift clear to the end….This is the first step in finding that $500 that’s yours to spend.’” The photo above shows the Sundeck at the top of Aspen Mountain, circa 1950. A RUDE AWAKENING IN THE NAPA VALLEY THAT WAS CLOSE. As you have likely heard, an earthquake both rocked and rolled the center of the American wine industry this past weekend. Though the shaking did enormous damage to many of the historic structures in downtown Napa and sent more than 200 people to area hospitals for treatment, there KELLY J. were no fatalities and HAYES an industry that is the heart and soul of the region was, for the most part, spared significant damage. The general consensus of those who live and make wine in the region was that the quake, as frightening as it was, came at just the right time to do the least possible damage. “We feel very lucky and that the earthquake happened in the middle of the night and not during the day,” said John Conover, partner and general manager of the Plumpjack Group, which has three wineries in the Valley — Plumpjack, Odette and Cade. “There was a music festival in downtown Napa Saturday and hundreds could have been injured or worse.” The quake hit at 3:20 a.m. on Sunday morning with a magnitude of 6.02 on the Richter scale. The town of Napa and the surrounding region were packed with tourists, who were in for a summer weekend of wine tasting and the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma Verizon IndyCar Series race at the nearby Sonoma Raceway. Had the quake taken place a few hours earlier or later, when guests were out and about in Napa, the results could have been catastrophic. “We dodged a bullet,” said Conover. As far as winery damage, location and age played a significant role. Anything north of Yountville seemed to be spared from damage other than tasting room glasses falling from racks. South and west of Napa took the brunt of the jolt. The quake, which had its epicenter at the southern end of

the West Napa fault near American Canyon, was just 7 miles deep. The soils of the Carneros region, nearest to San Pablo Bay, shook perhaps most violently. Wineries such as Cuvaison, Saintsbury and Ceja, though spared significant structural damage, were cleaning up broken glass from library wines that were broken and were recovering barrels that fell from the racks. And the Hess Collection, high up Mt. Veeder, lost a pair of 10,000-gallon tanks filled with recently harvested wine along with 15,000 cases of bottled wine, according to Jim Caudill, spokesman for the winery. Art from the extensive collection that hangs in the winery also crashed to the floor. But the most visible wine country damage may have been that done to the historic 1886 tasting room at Trefethen Family Vineyards. The extraordinary wooden building, just off Highway 29, north of the town of Napa and south of Yountville in the Oak Knoll appellation, literally changed location. “The entire first floor moved about 4 feet to the northwest,” said Terry Hall, spokesman for the winery. Photos show the old yellow wood building, one of the valley’s most iconic structures designed by Hamden MacIntyre more than 120 years ago, bulging in the center and listing precariously. A prepared statement issued by the Trefethen family said that a re-opening date for the historic winery building is still to be determined. Historic preservation specialists are assessing the damage and coming up with a viable plan to repair the structure. “The magnitude and depth of this quake really hit the old winery building hard,” said Janet Trefethen, when reviewing the damage to the family’s beloved winery. “We’ve cared for her for the last 50 years of her life, brought her back from years of neglect and will do whatever it takes to restore the structure’s integrity.” In the interim, a temporary facility in a tented area will be

utilized for the harvest tastings. The Trefethens creativity and penchant for hospitality will certainly make the “Temp Tasting Tent” a must-stop this fall for tourists. Fortunately, their winemaking equipment and operational facilities were less damaged than the old structure — meaning that the business of the harvest will proceed as planned. Hall echoed and elaborated on Conover’s comments regarding the fortuitous timing of the quake. “If you have to have an earthquake, this is really the sweet spot in terms of timing,” said the longtime industry veteran. “Most wineries have not yet started to harvest extensively, which means that their tanks and barrels were empty.” In addition many wineries had recently completed bottling their earlier vintages. “Many bottles were already sent to outside storage facilities and were boxed

and shrink-wrapped on pallets ready for shipping,” said Hall. This week the Valley is still under threat of aftershocks or an adjacent fault getting cranky, but with each passing day after the initial quake the possibility dissipates further. Meanwhile, an epic harvest awaits and, while cleanup continues, workers will soon be in the fields getting the grapes in. As John Ruel, the president of Trefethen Family Vineyards noted “As farmers we are continually humbled by the acts of nature and constantly strive to adapt to what’s thrown our way.” In Napa, farming is also the focus. Sourced from grapes planted around 1906 — yes, the year of the great San Francisco earthquake — this big bomb of a wine from Michael David features a Richter scale on its label. It just feels right.

CELEBRATE THE END OF SUMMER WITH AN ICE CREAM MASTERPIECE WHILE MOST PEOPLE consider Labor Day the official end to summer, to me, that was Monday. Growing up, Aug. 25 — my birthday — brought cool evenings and the conflicted anticipation of going back to school, but I could always count on savoring the last taste of freedom in a celebratory Cone Head Sundae. The signature kids’ dessert at Friendly’s — “The AMANDA Friendly,” as my RAE grandfather called it— wasn’t anything fancy, just two scoops of ice cream (mint chocolate chip, please), whipped cream, and a fudge-dipped sugar cone turned upside down to fashion a clown hat. Reese’s Pieces made the eyes and nose, and extra piled at the bottom of the metal tulip dish made the very last bite a syrupy, crunchy finale of melted ice cream and hardened peanut-butter candy. Now, with another summer over, I can’t think of a better way to segue into fall than by destroying an ice cream sundae of epic proportions. So, as any Virgo would, I set out on a mission to find the best in town. First I tackled the warm brownie sundae ($8) at Finbarr’s Irish Pub, which came highly recommended by a friend who has a razor-sharp sweet tooth. I took the suggestion as an opportunity to visit the restaurant’s new outpost, located on the River Valley Ranch Golf Course on Highway 133 in Carbondale, and I was not disappointed. Second only to the stunning vista of Mount Sopris from nearly every seat in the house was the behemoth set before me: A Belgian dark chocolate brownie topped with a thick blanket of double chocolate stout hot fudge and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. The whole thing is blanketed with a molten cloak of whipped, housemade marshmallow toasted with a blowtorch until charred. Best of all, it’s served in a cast-iron dish to keep the rich, chewy, chocolate-chunk brownie piping hot. “Too many restaurants serve a warm brownie, but by the time it gets to the table, it’s lukewarm

at best,” says pastry chef Lee Liebmann, who created the dessert with executive chef Joe Flamer. They can’t take it off Finbarr’s menu, and I see why: The ice cream melts from all sides — warm brownie beneath, liquefied marshmallow over top — creating an ooey, gooey, decadent mess. The dish arrives with two spoons, and you’ll need ‘em. “Food trends tend to cycle, and the brownie sundae has returned to replace the warm chocolate cake of the ’90s/early 2000s,” Liebmann says. “I grew up on the East Coast, eating decadent sundaes and Frrrozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity 3.” She’s talking about the decadesold Manhattan dessert parlor has been favored by celebrities and memorialized in movies for its outrageous confections, but none compare to the record-breaking Golden Opulence Sundae. A crystal goblet is packed with ingredients from far-flung corners of the world — Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, Madagascar vanilla covered in 23K edible gold leaf, chunks of Venezuelan Chuao chocolate, exotic candied fruits from Paris, and Grand Passion Caviar, a prized, saltfree variety that sparkles gold—and at $1000, the masterpiece has held court as the most expensive dessert in the world. Forget silver spoon: the utensil of choice is plated with 18K gold. Luxury on my mind, I visited The Little Nell, where executive pastry chef Danielle Riesz crafts an awardworthy bourbon praline sundae at element 47. Riesz adds chunks of brownie — a light, toasty version made with Valrhona Caramelia, a caramelized milk chocolate — to a chalice drizzled with caramel. She tops that with scoops of praline and caramel-swirl ice cream infused with Maker’s Mark bourbon. “It’s got that nice vanilla-y flavor, which makes me think dessert more than another one that’s more harsh,” Riesz explains. In go more milkchocolate brownie pieces, swirls of whipped cream, crunchy candied pecans, more caramel, and the best part: Tootsie Roll-sized homemade bourbon cordials. The bonbons,

made of crystallized sugar encasing a liquid bourbon center, take two days to prepare, and add a powerful whisky punch. “Sundaes are nostalgic, and summer doesn’t feel right without having a sundae on the menu,” says Riesz, who has featured black forest sundaes and peaches and cream sundaes in the past. “It makes you think you’re a kid, in an ice cream shop.” Of course, the booze-free, kidfriendly sundae bar of choice is at Paradise Bakery and Café, where a kaleidoscopic array of homemade gelato (starting at $5) boasts 24 flavors. Toppings include hot fudge, Ghirardelli chocolate or caramel, whipped cream, sprinkles, gummy bears, and any freshly baked brownies and cookies from the display case. Manager Dyan Bronstein suggests a few classics: raspberry with hot fudge; peanut butter cookies and cream with white chocolate sauce; or an Italian affogato — espresso poured over any flavor of gelato (hedonists choose cappuccino toffee crunch). Jimmy’s dishes up a stellar namesake sundae ($11) made with chocolate, vanilla, coffee ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and pistachios. Naturally, suggested pairings include an espresso martini

($12) or Royal Oporto 1970 Vintage Port ($35). But leave it to the Hotel Jerome, home of the famous “Aspen Crud” spiked milkshakes, to remind us that sometimes booze belongs in ice cream. Every Sunday from 6-8 pm., the Living Room hosts its popular Adult Ice Cream Social. Last week, a crowd of Great Gatsby party revelers watched manager Rachel Morin tip a giant canister of swirling, whirling liquid nitrogen into a stand mixer filled with crème Anglaise (custard of cream, milk, sugar, vanilla bean, and egg yolks) and a healthy pour of Leopold Brothers’ Rocky Mountain Blackberry Liqueur. In seconds, Morin portioned thick, purple ice cream ($5/scoop) into martini glasses for us to top with liqueur-soaked black cherries, fresh blackberries, and basil chiffonade. The verdict was unanimous: Liquid nitrogen ice cream is the lushest, most sinful kind we’ve ever had. Unfortunately, it’s Labor Day weekend, so this Sunday marks the last scheduled Ice Cream Social of the summer. Don’t miss it. Let’s be honest: I love bubbles. Cava, Prosecco, a great Brut Champagne. It’s my go-to drink whether I’m at happy hour or Sunday brunch. I’ve had hundreds of mimosas in half a dozen countries and there are two things that matter when mixing the best juice/bubbles combo. First,

Bubbles, orange juice and pineapple vodka should all be chilled before mixing. Pour 3 ounces of bubbles into a Champagne flute. Add 1 ounce fresh squeezed orange juice. Top with 1 ounce of pineapple vodka.

always use fresh juice. It’s sweeter, it’s lighter and the taste cannot be compared to anything in a bottle. Unless you’re making a gallon (I’ve had those lazy Sundays, too), it doesn’t take a lot of juice. Just do it. As for the bubbles, Prosecco is a great choice. Whatever you choose, choose more brut than sweet, because fresh juice will take care of the sugar. The pineapple flavored vodka adds a fun zippy twist that you’ll rarely find on any menu. You’ll be the brunch hero — and you didn’t even have to squeeze fresh pineapple juice. With all Aspen gives us, why do we only want to be part of the community some of the time?

GLOBAL PURSUITS

IS LIFE IN ASPEN LIKE LIVING IN A BUBBLE OR A SNOW GLOBE? WE’VE ALL HEARD THE PHRASE before. Aspen is a bubble. We live in this peaceful, affluent paradise with relatively low amounts of traffic, crime, tragedy and even fast-food chains. We often feel shut off from the rest of the world. But a bubble doesn’t last forever. In fact, it’s quite fleeting. That’s why the word BARBARA “bubble” has never PLATTS felt like the right label for this town. For me, Aspen feels more like a snow globe. It’s a small and particularly picturesque area that appears perfect to the outsider, but gets shaken up and turned upside down often. This snow globe is often viewed as a transient space. A place for the in-between. A world with an expiration date. We all love it, but many of us don’t find it feasible to live in it forever. I’ve always struggled to figure out why this place doesn’t hold permanency for most people in my age group. When I first moved

here I was sure it would only be for a brief season or a quick year. But it turned into so much more than that. It gave me my first “real” job and then my second. It’s provided me with friends I plan to hold on to for a lifetime. Plus the town has helped me acquire strong legs and the lung capacity of a Sherpa. I’m nearing my second anniversary here. I’ve seen two winters and almost two complete summers. Throughout these years, people have come and gone. Some return when the snow starts falling and others when it stops. It all depends on the season and what the town has to offer at a given time. It often feels like people only want bits and pieces of Aspen, not the full product. But is that how living in a community works? Particularly in a town that gives so much to us, from the heaps of powder in the winter to the long days of sunshine in the summer. We love this place, but we treat it like it’s disposable. Like it’s a bubble that will eventually pop. I suppose this is not a new phenomenon here. We initially

came to Aspen to dig into the mountains and reap the shiny benefits in the silver rush of the late 1880s. When that metal could no longer do it for us, we found new ways to benefit from the area. The mountains turned into our playground, and the community still procures the profits from it today. There’s nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with one’s natural surroundings. What gets to me is when we don’t immerse ourselves in them. Many of us simply skim the surface of this town, which leaves us with a community that’s only partially present. I started writing this column to point out efforts and activities from the youth in Aspen. I wanted to show that the town was not just full of young, ski-bum hoodlums. It is a place with entrepreneurs, innovators, artists and teachers who are creating culture and helping to grow the community. Through research and networking, I’ve found many people that want to make a difference and involve themselves

in parts of the community in order to do so. There is a small group of young people that have made Aspen their home. They invest their time, energy and passion into this place. But every person needs to get involved whether it’s through volunteering for a nonprofit or supporting local business. We have so many opportunities to help out no matter if we are here for a season or a lifetime. In my two years here, I’ve learned a lot about this community. One thing that sticks out is that Aspen is truly what you make of it. Treat it like a bubble, and sooner or later your enclosed world will cease to exist. Treat it like a snow globe, a delicate yet permanent community that will exist no matter how much it gets shaken up, and maybe paradise won’t feel quite so transient. GEOCACHING, IN ASPEN AND BEYOND by JEAN NE MCG OVER N

LIKE ALL CHILDREN, my kids love to play games. When they were very young, “make-believe” could fill hours just around the house. They dressed up, built forts, created elaborate story lines. But now they are older; their horizons have expanded and their interests have diversified. Still, they love to play games. Top on the list for my 11-year-old son and his like-minded buddies: geocaching. Simply mention the idea, “So, do you guys want to do some geocaching?” and the reaction is immediate and adamant — “YES!” So off we go ... PHOTO BY JEANNE MCGOVERN

G OUT at the INN

THE RULES ARE SIMPLE:

First, a little background. According to geocaching.com, the official website of the sport: “Geocaching is the real-world treasure hunt that’s happening right now, all around you. There are 2,478,914 active geocaches and over 6 million geocachers worldwide.” Indeed, geocaching a big treasure hunt — in places all around the world, including Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley, where people have hidden treasures that hunters find through GPS mapping, written clues and sheer luck. Sometimes the “prize” is simply the chance to add your name to the log book; other times, it’s a token. On a recent outing, my boy posse walked away with a dollar bill, a pair of sunglasses and a caramel apple punch card from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. In the spirit of the game, they left behind Starburst candies, a quarter and a homemade bracelet. Still confused? Don’t be. Just download the app and give it a try (note: there are several levels of “membership” with associated fees and benefits; the free, basic level has kept us hunting just fine so we’re sticking with it for now). But I understand that a picture — visual and otherwise — is worth a thousand words, so I offer you this play-by-play of a recent afternoon of geocaching in Aspen with Zach, Lucas and Connor. Our first stop was a cache we’d found before — RKB 1986 (bottom photo, opposite page). This time, though, the “treasure box” was in a slightly different location. Still, it was an easy find. And funny, as some of the treasures we left before remained, while others had been snatched up and replaced with new goodies. Next on our hunt was a new cache, which the boys heard from a friend had been “muggled” but was recently returned (“muggled” is a geocaching term taken from the Harry Potter books, which means that someone either accidentally or knowingly removed or destroyed the cache). A 45-minute search with no luck had us thinking their friend was wrong.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? HOW IS GEOCACHING PRONOUNCED? Geo-cashing, like cashing a check. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE WORD GEOCACHING? The word Geocaching refers to GEO for geography, and to CACHING, the process of hiding a cache. A cache in computer terms usually refers to information stored in memory to make it faster to retrieve, but the term is also used in hiking/camping as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions.

Discouraged but not deterred, we carried on to “Out at the Inn.” We followed the GPS map to a parking lot just outside of town and began to walk. We circled for a while, homing in on a grove of trees surrounded by discarded construction materials (above, #1). We searched high and low (above, #2) to no avail. We were about to give up — like I said, there are times you just can’t find the cache — when we re-read the clues and the previous hunters’ posts. A clump of trees; a pill bottle wrapped in camouflage. We looked a little harder. And there, tucked deep in the branches and dead wood, was the cache (above, #3). Success! Together, the boys opened the bottle and dug out its contents (above, #4 and #5). They signed the tattered log book, took a few treasures, and stuffed new ones in. Then, to finish the game, they screwed

the cap back on and tucked it back into the branches — not exactly where they found it, but close enough that others who followed the clues could find the hidden treasure. Excited by the success of finding a new cache, we set out to find others. Apparently, our luck had run dry. “Take a Seat” (right, above) sounded so easy. By the river. “Seat.” A previous hunter had to wait while someone finished their lunch “on top” of it. But its location remained a mystery to us. But that’s part of the allure — and addiction — of geocaching. You know something’s out there and you know you can find it. And you can do it anywhere, anytime (yes, there are people who take geocaching beyond “hobby” status). But for us, as I said, we simply ask the question, “Do you want to do some geocaching?” and the kids are in. Really, the adults are in, too. The reasons are simple: Treasure hunting is cool; being outside is fun; embarking on an adventure that requires little equipment but uses both your brain and your body is a good thing. As one of my favorite geocaching quotes states: “What’s your hobby?” “I search for Tupperware in the woods. What do you do for fun?” Game on.

ASPEN ART MUSEUM THE YEAR 2014 was THE YEAR for the Aspen Art Museum. On Aug. 1, the museum held its 10th annual (and last) Art Crush on the grounds of the old museum (now called the Powerhouse). It was an over-thetop affair with an avenue of magenta roses leading MARY partygoers across ESHBAUGH the bridge over the HAYES Roaring Fork River from the museum grounds to a big dinner tent in the Rio Grande. There had to be close to a thousand people at the party! Then the next week saw many openings for the new museum, located in a controversial square building in downtown Aspen. There were early openings for members of the museum and then a Grand Opening on Aug. 9, which brought out scores of Aspenites and visitors to see the new digs. Undercurrent ... I have to say the inside of the new museum is better than the outside.

THE MANY SOUNDS OF ONEREPUBLIC FANS WHO SEE OneRepublic this summer — including a stop at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass this weekend — can expect a concert experience that’s considerably bigger and bolder than the group’s earlier shows. With its 2013 release “Native” (the group’s third studio album) having given the group a multi-format No. 1 pop single in “Counting Stars” a nd a second single, “Feel Again,” which went Top 10 on “Billboard” magazine’s Adult Top 40 chart, OneRepublic was ready to bring a show that matched the large venues it can now headline. “The show has definitely changed quite a bit since we released ‘Native,’” guitarist Zach Filkins said in phone interview. “We’ve played so many shows where it was just us on stage and a few lights and maybe a backdrop. We got really tired of that...We decided to spend all of our money and then some to bring out lights and video screens, different things like that to kind of introduce while the show progresses. We loved it. And I think the crowds really loved it and the whole experience was definitely eye opening for us.” Another thing that figures to be different about OneRepublic’s concerts is the energy level of the music. The first two OneRepublic albums, “Dreaming Out Loud” (2007) and “Waking Up” (2009), were weighted toward ballads and mid-tempo material. “Native” includes a few such songs (“What You Wanted” and “Au Revoir”), but it’s more defined by its peppier tunes like “Counting Stars,” “Feel Again” and “Light It Up,” which have given the group’s concerts a more upbeat dimension. The more uptempo character of

“Native,” which was recently rereleased in a deluxe “repack” edition that includes the group’s latest single, “Love Runs Out” (currently Top 5 on “Billboard’s” Adult Pop chart), didn’t happen by accident. “We do a certain thing, and then inevitably, we kind of get a little bit bored with it or we think ‘Well, now we need this’ or ‘Now we need the opposite of that’ or ‘We need a little more of what we don’t have,’” Filkins said. “I think looking back on the songs that we had and how our live shows were, I think we were kind of struck by the fact that we were lacking in a little bit more uptempo (material). I think it’s also just kind of the musical climate right now. I don’t think people want to hear slow, brooding songs that much.” In whatever musical setting OneRepublic has pursued, the group has obviously done well at connecting with pop radio and its fans. This makes sense considering the band is fronted by Ryan Tedder, who in

addition to his role as lead songwriter in OneRepublic, has become one of music’s most in-demand writer/ producers for other artists. His resume reads like a who’s who of the Top 40 charts over the past half-decade. He’s written or cowritten hit songs for Adele (“Rumour Has It”), Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love”), Beyonce (“Halo”), Jennifer Lopez (“Do It Well”), Kelly Clarkson (“Already Gone”), Big Time Rush (“Music Sounds Better With U”) and Gavin DeGraw (“Not Over You”), to name a few. The connection between Tedder and Filkins, though, pre-dates Tedder’s time as a pop hitmaker. The two met in 1996 while students at Colorado Springs Christian High School, developing a strong enough musical and personal bond to stay in touch as they went to different colleges and Filkens moved to Chicago, where he did some modeling. Still, the idea of forming a band

together remained in the forefront. And in 2003, after Tedder started making inroads with his songwriting and producing, he contacted Filkins about moving to Los Angeles to start OneRepublic. “We knew that at some point we wanted to try this thing, but we didn’t want to just to move out there blind and try to figure out what to do,” Filkins said. “When he called, I knew that he had some good momentum going and he’d been working on songwriting.” The pair started writing songs and soon got signed by Columbia Records. That’s when things took a turn for the worse. THE LINEUP which had settled into a lineup that also included bassist Brent Kutzle, guitarist/keyboardist Drew Brown and drummer Eddie Fisher, thought its career might be over before it really started. But the group decided to start posting songs on a MySpace website, and quickly, the band’s music started generating hits. “MySpace gave us our last chance, and I really think it was our last chance,” Filkins said. “I don’t think any of us really had it in us to keep trying over and over again. MySpace was really the last-ditch effort to make something of it. And right when we were at our lowest, MySpace reacting was the only positive thing within the context of OneRepublic. “I mean, all of the shows we were playing in L.A., the crowds were dwindling,” he said. “We were playing the same venues over and over again. And the only thing that was growing was this

sense on MySpace that we had something that people wanted. It’s really a strange paradox to play a show at a venue you’ve played four times already for 20 people, five of which are people you don’t know. The rest are all friends trying to help support you. Then you go home and you get on the computer and you see that people all over the world are writing personal messages to you and you’re getting more and more plays on all of your music. It’s kind of like wow, if MySpace was a venue, we’d be selling out tickets. But for some reason in L.A. we’re not doing anything.” The plays on MySpace kept on coming as the band promoted itself on the website, eventually topping 20 million. That drew the interest of several labels, including Mosely Music Group, the imprint owned by Timbaland. The hip-hop star particularly liked the song “Apologize.” Timbaland remixed it, released it as a single off of his “Aftershock”

album and watched “Apologize” (which was also featured on OneRepublic’s “Dreaming Out Loud” album) go to No. 1 at adult pop radio. Things have been rolling ever since, both for OneRepublic and for Tedder’s own career as a songwriter/producer. With “Native,” OneRepublic continued to craft songs with big, melodic choruses and smooth and soulful vocals (from Tedder) that will be familiar to fans of the first two albums. But in addition to writing more uptempo tunes, the group also shifted its sound away from guitars to create a different instrumental mix. “I think we got really into kind of like strings and pads and keyboards and all those instruments that kind of bring about this behind-the-scenes kind of feeling,” Filkins said. The different instrumental mix prompted OneRepublic to add a keyboardist/multiinstrumentalist to its touring

That has allowed the group to make songs from “Native” (as well as the first two CDs) translate well to the concert stage. “There’s a depth to the third album and a maturity that I really appreciate about it,” Filkins said. “In conjunction with some of the production and lighting that we’re doing, I think the songs are definitely working really well.” Alan Sculley writes for Last Word Features.
