THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION

A few thoughts on the sale of the Washington Post A LITTLE MORE THAN a month ago, the news broke about the sale of the Washington Post to Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos for $250 million. Cash on the barrel head. Deal done. At about the same time, I had finished one book and was casting about for something new to read when my eye fell on a book inherited from my late and sainted mother, Katharine Graham’s “Personal History,” which I started but did not finish when it came out more than 15 years ago. Seemed like the time was ripe, given the announcement of the sale, so I dove in and was pleasantly surprised to discover it to be a fairly easy read, though I found myself skimming and even skipping pages spent describing parties, or fashion trends, or trips abroad on yachts. Beyond that, the book is a fine

HIT&RUN

account of one family’s careful tending of a flower of the print world, the Washington Post. Purchased by Graham’s father, Eugene Meyer, in 1933, the paper at that time was pretty third-rate, and in fact was running dead last in the competitive environment of a four-newspaper town. It seemed the former owner, Edward Beale McLean, was a “dapper playboy” (Kay Graham’s words) who got himself and his paper tied up in the Teapot Dome scandal and had to get out of the business. Meyer, who’d never owned a newspaper before, spent decades building the Post into the powerhouse it ultimately became. Along the way he went into a partnership with Phil Graham, a Harvard Law grad who had married Katharine and was becoming a business and publishing titan in his own right. Kay, as she mainly was known, only took over the business in the 1960s, after Phil succumbed to what we now refer to as bipolar affective disorder, and killed himself with a pistol. It was Kay who steered the paper through its two major news controversies — the publication

with JOHN COLSON

of the Pentagon Papers and, of course, Watergate. As I noted earlier, it’s a damned good book, and it takes the reader through a very interesting segment of U.S. history from the perspective of a privileged but hard-working woman making her way in a man’s world. That, though, is not why I’m writing about Graham, except to say that I bet she’s spinning in her grave still, even a month after the sale was announced. Not that I think Bezos will necessarily kill the paper through acts of either deliberation or stupidity, although both certainly are possible. I’d rather believe, and fervently hope, that Don Graham, son of Katharine and president and CEO of the company, has picked the best sailor he could find to pilot the Post through the choppy waters of our limping and staggering economy. No, Kay’s anguish would be over the fact that after four generations of family control and nurturing, that great paper has become just another corporate bargaining chip. She would, as do I, lament this change in a world where too often those in control care more about making money than they do about actually making something, or doing something worthwhile on a broader human scale than the coarse devotion to ever-growing profits.

I was a Post reader in my youth, when my family lived in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I was glued to the front page as it published the Pentagon Papers in 1971 despite massive federal pressure and legal action against them. And again a year later, when the Post went 10 rounds with our paranoid, scheming crook of a president at the time, Richard M. Nixon, and his cronies, over the scandal known as Watergate. An odd quirk of history is that the announcement to sell the Post fell just four days short of the 39th anniversary of Nixon’s resignation from the presidency. I’ve been a Post reader all of my adult life, whether as a local consumer in the D.C. area or far away, and even now will check the Post website every day, knowing that I stand to read some very good reporting and writing about things that I want to know about. I know that times have changed, and I can only hope that this change is for the better and that Bezos proves to be a good steward of a news organization that is a national treasure. If he proves false to that hope, well, I guess we can cross that bridge when we come to it. jcolson@aspentimes.com

THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION

with STEWART OKSENHORN

POPULAR MUSIC Gregory Alan Isakov was born in South Africa and raised in Philadelphia. But he doesn’t play the African a cappella style known as isicathamaya (think Ladysmith Black Mambazo) or Philly soul (à la Teddy Pendergrass or Hall & Oates). Instead, Isakov seems to have picked up a musical style from his adopted home of Colorado, where he moved to more than a decade ago. Isakov plays a smart, lyrical style of folk; his primary inspiration has been Leonard Cohen. For his new album, “The Weatherman,” Isakov soaked up the surroundings of Nederland, the small, music-rich mountain town where he did the recording, on old-style analog equipment. The album title comes from his affection for the power of observation. “There’s a guy on the television or the radio telling us the future,” he said. The 33-year-old Isakov, a horticulturist as well as a singersongwriter, plays Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Belly Up.

Singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov performs at Belly Up on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

CURRENTEVENTS TELEVISION Rocky Mountain Institute chief scientist Amory Lovins will speak in the final event in the Summer Lecture Series, Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Hotel Jerome.

LECTURE “Breaking Bad,” starring Aaron Paul, left, and Bryan Cranston, concludes with the final episode airing on Sept. 29.

TELEVISION HAS a rough history of bringing well-loved series to a conclusion. “Breaking Bad” has so far avoided the fate of “Arrested Development” and “Dallas,” with a final run that is living up to the promise of its absorbing first four and a half seasons. If there is one complaint, it is that the series is coming to too quick a conclusion — not only because a diehard fan would want more seasons, but because the creators seem to be at pains to cram twists and thrills into the remaining airtime. In any event, it’s impossible to say that “Breaking Bad” is coming to a fizzling end, not with the entanglements between Walt and Skyler, Walt and Jesse, Jesse and Hank, etc. It’s still anybody’s guess how things in the ABQ meth trade go down; we’ll find out in the final wind-down, which closes with the episode “Felina” on Sept. 29.

WHILE MOST OF US in the Roaring Fork Valley tend to keep our focus comfortably inside the bubble, one organization is thinking on a global scale. The Rocky Mountain Institute works on matters of planetary importance, most of them having to do with the urgent matter of energy resources. With its new Summer Lecture Series, RMI has given the public a look at what kind of conversations are going on at its Old Snowmass campus. The series closes Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Hotel Jerome with another free lecture featuring RMI founder and chief scientist Amory Lovins, who will talk with the organization’s new CEO, Jules Kortenhorst, on the subject of Carbon Fiber Cars: Are We There Yet? A reception will follow the conversation.

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

by TIM WILLOUGHBY

Tons of iron mining equipment remain intact, but you won’t find much of it in Aspen.

RECYCLED METAL, RECYCLED DREAMS Traveling through Colorado’s mining towns you see evidence of the past: mine dumps and head frames, along with smaller items such ore cars, still sitting on their tracks. Why do these items remain in many small towns, but not in Aspen? Some of it may have been moved from Aspen. After 1918 as the price of silver went up, miners went down into the mines. When lead and zinc were needed for a war, mines hummed with activity. However, these economic ups were temporary and the inevitable down cycles forced owners either to close or to hold tight for the next mineral price surge. The cycles taught observant owners to punt: they ceased operations while saving equipment and infrastructure for the return of good times. Some mines ran out of ore, but just as many continued to produce mineable material — “mineable” depending on mineral price. Mines had been stripped of the best ore during the 19th century, but later their lower grade ore became mineable due to more cost-effective milling methods. Many owners of the 1930s and 1940s inherited not only their mines but also the mining bug. Short on capital they augmented minimal infrastructure by purchasing used

equipment from other mines that were closing. Owners of large Aspen mines (for example, David Hyman, who controlled the Smuggler, and the Brown family with the Aspen Mine)

Depression, dismantling an Aspen Mountain tram. It was dangerous work because tonnage of tram cable could coil on the steep slopes and begin rolling down the mountain. Cable, one of the more expensive

A GIANT BOILER, ONE OF FEW ITEMS RETRIEVED IN MODERN TIMES, WAS HOISTED AND HAULED OUT OF THE HILLS BY CARL BERGMAN. NOW RESORTED, IT RESIDES IN THE MINER’S BUILDING. shut down major operations in 1918 and changed focus to other enterprises. They leased their properties to small operators such as the Herron brothers who ran the Smuggler and Durant mines into the 1950s. Eventually owners turned their last profits by selling off infrastructure. One such project employed Elmer Johnson, my uncle, who worked for the Brown family during the

S e pte m b e r 1 2 - 18 , 2013

items to purchase, was recyclable. Abandoned mine tunnels became sources of a new precious underground material: long-lasting steel track. Recycled track allowed even the uranium mines in far-away southern Colorado to avoid ordering and importing new track from the east, at a time when steel was valued as a World War II commodity. Ore cars that could be crippled only by rust, heavy gauge copper wiring, and

tons of large bolts, nuts and fasteners were also recycled. Although mill equipment from the Aspen area was loaded up and transported to opening mines, most other metal was salvaged for the war effort. Equipment that still rests on Colorado mine dumps suggests that owners never gave up on reopening. Aspen’s most recently operating silver mine, the Midnight, sold off its track before it closed in 1953. While equipment and track deep inside Aspen’s mountains was not sold off, but held by leasors who thought they might experience one more surge of silver prices, very little remains. A giant boiler, one of few items retrieved in modern times, was hoisted and hauled out of the hills by Carl Bergman. Now restored, it resides in the Miner’s Building. So little mining equipment remained in Aspen by the 1960s, when a fast food restaurant on Main Street wanted to display ore cars to match its name, it purchased wooden coal cars, as if Aspen’s silver miners wouldn’t notice the difference — or care. But they did. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn@ comcast.net.

WINEINK

WORDS to DRINK BY

THE RESURRECTION: BALVERNE LAUNCHES, ONCE AGAIN IT IS AN extraordinarily difficult proposition to launch a wine brand. First and foremost, the wines must be great. And we all know that is no small feat. Sourcing great fruit, finding a winemaker who is well versed in the varietals, creating a facility for vilification and, perhaps most important, having the wine Gods smile upon your vineyards at the time of your first vintage are all critical factors in a successful launch. Then there are the logistical challenges KELLY J. HAYES that are inherent in making any brand in any field resonate and become relevant to an audience. Packaging, marketing, positioning the product, finding paths for distribution — each element must work in concert with the others or the brand will languish. And a relaunch of an original brand can be even more difficult. A brand that once was can come with residue and baggage that make it an even greater challenge to position it in the marketplace. It is against that backdrop that a Sonoma, Calif., winery is reinventing itself and reinstating the famed Balverne name to the landscape of great California wines. This past month, the Balverne brand was relaunched after an extended hiatus — and the future looks bright, indeed. The Balverne story goes back to the early 1980s when two young, then-unknown winemakers, Doug Nalle and John Kongsgaard, made wine from fruit on a spectacular vineyard site just outside of Windsor, Calif. Balverne became a “cult” wine before there was such a thing as a cult wine. A Balverne wine was poured at a White House dinner and a few collectors have Balvernes in their cellars to this day. While Nalle and Kongsgaard went on to great things with their individual eponymous wineries, Balverne eventually ceased

production. In 1992, Bob and Renee Stein purchased the 710-acre estate, renaming the property Windsor Oaks Vineyards. Since then, they have grown a number of varietals on hillsides that straddle the Russian River and Chalk Hill AVAs. The majority of the grapes have been sold to around 35 vintners throughout the region, including Sonoma Cutrer, Flowers, Pax and Sojourn. In addition, about 2,000 cases of small-lot, barrel-select wines have been made under the Windsor Oaks label over the last few years, the majority being Pinot Noir. Determined to take full advantage of the quality fruit that is grown on the property, the Steins decided to launch and market a new label. After much discussion about the name, label designer Bob Johnson, who they were working with, said simply: “Why not call it Balverne?” So it was that the winery would go back to the future. Hiring Margaret Davenport, famed as winemaker for Clos du Bois and a number of boutique wines, John Calmeyer (a longtime industry pro who is in charge of the project as Windsor Oaks general

S e pte m b e r 1 2 - 18 , 2013

manager), made a statement about how important quality is to the Balverne label: “Between them, Margaret and Doug Nalle (who is a collaborative winemaker on the project) have 74 years of harvests, many of them on these vineyards,” John said in a recent interview. “It’s exciting to have this kind of experience and these great vineyards to start Balverne.” John brought samples to this year’s Food & Wine Classic and I was able to taste the first releases. Just released from the incredible 2012 vintage are a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé of Sangiovese. There is also a 2010 Pinot Noir. This year’s total output will be fewer than 2,000 cases, but the plan is to ramp up considerably over the next few vintages with different varietals. “There are zillion different blocks and an elevation change of over 1,000 feet,” Margaret says of the Windsor Oaks site, sounding like the proverbial kid in the candy store. More than 210 acres are planted to grapes (the Steins placed 300 acres in an conservancy with the Sonoma County Open Space District) and the potential is huge. “We have a new viticulturist on

staff and we are in the process of just sorting through the vineyards,” says Margaret. “We have lots of different grapes like Grenache, Mourvedre, even some Dolcetto.” A bottling under the name “Reunion” is in the works, which will be a Bordeaux blend made by Margaret and Doug Nalle. In fact, all of the Bordeaux varietals are grown on the property. Expect Balverne to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon in future vintages. In the meantime, the group is working on distribution and marketing, and getting the name and story out to the wine world and consumers. John hopes that the Balverne brand will strike a chord with wine enthusiasts. “It’s amazing, but I will speak with sommeliers and wine distributors and we find that there is an emotional attachment to the original Balverne.” In the years to come, Balverne will surely find a place with wine lovers of a new generation. FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

FARM TO FORK

IT’S 6 P.M., DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR DINNER LIVES? REMEMBER WHEN enjoying a farm-to-table meal was simply called having dinner? No? Well, you’re not alone. Drawing guests to Rock Bottom Ranch, one of four outposts of the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES), for monthly outdoor suppers, daily farm tours, and special events such as an annual Harvest Party and pig butchery workshops, is how ranch director Jason Smith and his crew are re-educating consumers AMANDA RAE about where their food comes from. “We want to be outside the box, looking at food a little differently and learning about the work and energy that goes into creating these foods,” Smith says. “Food doesn’t just magically appear on the grocery store shelves. People forget that occasionally.” It’s hard to forget when your food is looking right at you, literally. Visitors to Rock Bottom Ranch must walk a narrow dirt footpath from a gravel parking area through sprawling pasture, where they’ll likely encounter bleating sheep and goats, squabbling chickens, and grunting, scuffling hogs en route to the field study center and open-air pole barn that anchor the 113-acre property. Not only is it a passage through a modern-day farm, it’s a journey through time to a nearly forgotten era. Out in the field one hazy morning, Smith introduces me to Sugar, a lumbering boar with fine ebony fur and floppy ears. He’s a Large Black, a British heritage breed prized in the late-1800s and early-1900s for its docile temperament and valuable lard qualities but that has been tiptoeing on the brink of extinction for decades. “In the 1950s and ’60s, as a country we transitioned out of backyard homesteading to more of an industrial food system,” Smith explains. “These guys did really poorly in confinement, so they fell out of favor. In 2008, a group found less than 300 breeding animals in North America.” Thus began a conservation effort to save the Large Black, listed in

16

1973 as critically endangered by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Since joining Rock Bottom Ranch in January, Smith has been spearheading the effort to revive the species here in the Roaring Fork Valley by raising breeding stock, the meat of which is sold at the Basalt Sunday Market and featured in ACES dinners on-site. “A hundred years ago this is how all animals were raised: outdoors on grass, (with) access to pasture, sunlight and bugs,” says Smith, who has implemented a simple system called multispecies rotational grazing. Each week, Smith and agricultural manager Peter Arthur shift three groups of animals among quarter-acre parcels to make efficient

“THE WORST THING WE CAN DO IS SPEND TIME TAKING CARE OF THESE ANIMALS, MAKING SURE THEY HAVE A GOOD LIFE, AND THEN NOT HONOR THEM BY WASTING THEIR PRODUCTS.” – RANCH DIRECTOR JASON SMITH use of the land. The task takes only 20 minutes, as each plot is demarcated with portable, solarcharged electric fencing, mostly to deter predators. “They won’t see the same piece of land for months,” Smith says. (Of 9 acres here, most sit unoccupied.) “We keep ’em moving. The grass is in a constant vegetative state. It’s a lot of planning, then the animals do the work.” He glances at the 14 goats and sheep inching toward the fence’s opening. “OK, let’s move some animals!” Smith moves the mesh barrier aside. The braying bevy stampedes toward a previously untouched quarter-acre parcel and munches immediately on billowy grass. Once the space is secure, Smith and Arthur move lightweight shade structures and coax six resident pigs to the freshly shorn plot, where they stomp, root and roll in the soil, doing what they do best: making a mess. The chickens, meanwhile, are not seen, but heard: squawking wildly from within what looks like a miniature red barn on wheels — a portable henhouse outfitted with nest boxes and hinged doors that are secured at night. Smith hops onto a small tractor and tugs the structure to the

S e pte m b e r 1 2 - 18 , 2013

muddy zone just vacated, and Arthur opens a hatch to set the birds free, to scratch and peck out any bugs, larvae and grain left by the pigs. “It’s not revolutionary, but in the valley, and the state, it’s limited,” Smith says of the sustainable-farming model. “Probably less than 2 percent of the country is practicing a system like this. We’re trying to demonstrate that this can be done in your backyard or on a larger scale.” While eggs (60 dozen per week at peak season) and meat are harvested here (in winter, a separate flock of 300 sheep roam another 31 acres through a partnership with Crystal River Meats), Smith prides these animals on their service to this sensitive riparian area along the crown of Mount Sopris. “It’s hard to get equipment in there — and we don’t really want to take equipment there,” Smith says. “We don’t want to spray chemicals, so we put these guys in there, and they’ll maintain it for us.” Nowhere is this stewardship of the land more evident than during Rock Bottom Ranch’s farm-to-table dinners, the next one held on Sept. 27. Call it hyper-local eating: the fivecourse meals are served in the 1981 pole barn, just steps away from where ingredients — lamb, pork, chicken —

are sourced, including produce grown in a modest garden on the property and at neighboring farms. A team of Smith’s chef friends, including Kevin McCullen of Avalanche Cheese and caterer Sarah Helsley, both of whom he met while working as a chef at The Little Nell in 2003, help put it all together, accompanied by spirits from Woody Creek Distillers and wine from Canyon Wind Cellars in Palisade. The twist: guests don’t know what’s on the menu until they arrive. “We start planning a couple weeks in advance, but we don’t know what the weather’s gonna do,” Smith says. “We really put it together à la minute.” Case in point: two hours before the July event began, the chefs found some squash blossoms and modified an entire dish. Unless you’re part of the club, however, it may be hard to get in: ACES members get first dibs on tickets, which typically sell out before becoming available to the general public. “The demand for this has been incredible,” Smith says. “We are so pleased at how the community has turned out to support us. It’s an experience — a celebration of local food.” Maybe in the future it will just be called dinner. Amanda Rae grew up surrounded by farmland in the beautiful Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.

GUNNER’S LIBATIONS

by ALISON LADMAN for THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CAPTAIN WHO? A RUM REVIVAL (AND MORE) Just as we wouldn’t lump together all red wines, we also shouldn’t treat all rums alike. A growing awareness of the differences in regional rums — not to mention variances in how they are produced — opens new opportunities for appreciating each in its own way. And when it comes to cocktails, that opens fun and delicious possibilities for highlighting the nuances of each. To get you started on an exploration of different styles of rum, we offer three cocktails built around a Cuban-style rum, a blended aged rum and a vanilla rum. Gunilla Asher is taking a break from the bar scene, so we’re turning this page over to you. Email jmcgovern@aspentimes.com with what cocktails you’re mixing, what libations you’re drinking, what tastes have tempted your tastebuds and we’ll share them with our readers. Cheers!

ON TRACK CROWN MOUNTAIN BMX OFFICIALLY KICKED OFF THIS SUMMER AND THE SPORT IS ALREADY GAINING LOYAL FOLLOWERS

IT’S A DREARY early fall night. The rain has been spitting all day, and the clouds in the sky have no indication of clearing. I text two different dads: “Is there going to be a BMX clinic tonight?” Neither of them respond, which means the clinic is on. When I arrive with my boys, ages 5 and 8, I’m expecting only a few diehards to be there, but to my surprise there are dozens of kids pushing their bikes up the dirt hill to the staging are where the starting gate is located. The light rain earlier in the day has made the track perfectly tacky and hard, helping the kids gain speed and momentum as they bank corners and pump over the rhythm section.

Rain or shine, the local BMX scene in the Roaring Fork Valley is taking off and these kids aren’t about to let it slow down. Crown Mountain BMX is the latest sports craze in the Roaring Fork Valley, one that has been attracting throngs of kids — both young and old, girls and boys — from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. All that is needed is to participate is a bike of any kind, a helmet and the $20 entry fee. On a recent day, there were about 65 participants from the Roaring Fork Valley, including three “motos,” or gates, of under 5 year olds. “That is awesome,” says Heath Johnson, “that is the next generation of riders.” Johnson is one of the people behind this grassroots effort to introduce BMX to the valley. Along with Paul Viola and John Blatz, the trio gathered in-kind and monetary donations, rustled up sponsorships, designed a logo and literally build the track from the ground up. The official opening of the track took place on Saturday, Sept. 7. “It’s kids on bicycles,” says Johnson of the sport’s growing popularity. “It’s a vehicle for going fast, taking risks in a safe place. They get a thrill here that they can’t get anywhere else. Not on a street, or a bike path or in a park; this is the only place they can come and go crazy and it’s safe and allowed. Add the element of competition and it’s a pretty magical combination.” Johnson introduced his 8-year-old son, “Flying Finn” Johnson, to the sport about three years ago. They use

Work started Sept. 2 on a bike park at the Grace-Shehi property, owned by Pitkin County Open Space and Trails and the town of Basalt. The bike park will be completed later this month.

CYCLISTS OF ALL TYPES will have several additional ways to pursue their thrills on Pitkin County Open Space and Trails property before winter hits. The dirt is flying at Grace-Shehi Park in Basalt, where a new bike track is being built. Dirt jumps are being contoured into the lower slopes of Light Hill, southwest of Basalt High School. There will be two travel lines constructed — one advanced and one easier, according to Gary Tennenbaum, assistant director of the department. At the base of the hill, the dirt jump lines will lead to a pump track featuring jumps, tabletops and banked turns. The tracks are being designed to accommodate everything from Strider bikes for tots and mountain bikes. “You don’t need a BMX bike,” Tennenbaum said. A race-sanctioned BMX track was built earlier this summer at Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel. Tennenbaum said the track at Grace-Shehi would complement Crown Mountain’s course rather than duplicate it. Open Space and Trails has constructed numerous mountain bike trails in the upper Roaring Fork Valley but hasn’t undertaken anything like the bike track. “It’s like a confined mountain bike trail,” Tennenbaum said. Grace-Shehi Park is named after homesteaders. The 25-acre parcel was purchased in 2010, when Pitkin County contributed $1.1 million and Basalt chipped in $400,000. One-half acre is used as a community garden for midvalley residents. Another half-acre is reserved for expansion.

PHOTOS BY LEIGH VOGEL (ABOVE) AND COURTESY OF THE TOWN OF BASALT (TOP)

A substantial part of the property is leased to rancher Bill Grange, who irrigates it and grows hay. A company called Dirtsculpt started work on the BMX track last week. The project, budgeted at $30,000, is supposed to be completed later this month. Tennenbaum figures use will be high given the proximity to the high school, convenience for people riding their bikes from Basalt and adequate parking nearby. “Once it starts catching on, it’s going to be pretty popular out there,” he said. The bike track isn’t the only project Open Space and Trails is undertaking this season that will benefit bikers and pedestrians. A hard surface will be added to a section of the Rio Grande Trail at Woody Creek, as well as a bridge at the creek itself. The new pavement is less than 1 mile long but its addition will mean a cyclist can ride from McLain Flats Road to Glenwood Springs on a hard surface, Tennenbaum noted. At Sky Line Park in Snowmass Village, work is wrapping up on the Cozyline and Airline trails, which will add 5 miles of single-track combined. Cozyline will add 3 miles of trail from the Cozy Point side of the ridge. Airline will add 2 miles from the Owl Creek Trail and eliminate the need to go up Radar Road. Significant progress was made on Cozyline recently when 180 volunteers rallied by the Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association and other organizations, including Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers, put in 835 hours. Those trails could be completed by early October, Tennenbaum said.

to practice at a bandit pump track near Stubbies in Basalt. But when the town caught wind and assessed the damage the track was doing to surrounding cottonwoods, the track was abandoned. At that time Johnson approached the town to use space near Basalt High School for a BMX track. During this time he also came into contact with Chris Woods, director of Crown Mountain Park, and Woods, known as “Woodsie,” was so enthusiastic about bringing BMX to Crown Mountain — where the space and infrastructure, maintenance and parking, already existed — that the idea found a permanent home. Johnson and his wife, Tricia, now have both of their children racing. Finn’s older sister, Tatum, 10, is one of the most successful riders in her age group in Colorado taking secondplace in cruiser and third in class during recent state finals held in Denver. Known for her purple-and-green racing gear with her racing nickname “Turbo Tater Tot” stitched on the pants, Tatum has an ease in her racing and positive attitude that is contagious around the track. “It looked really fun to see the other kids racing,” she says. “My dad told me stories about racing when he was a kid and I’ve seen videos of him racing.” Tatum enjoys soccer and skiing but says BMX is her favorite sport; it was her “dream” to have a BMX track close to her home in Basalt. Now instead of having to drive to Eagle or Grand Junction to practice, she can come to the track daily and work on the finer points of racing. “It’s really nice, I can practice every day,” she says. “That’s why I got really fast, really fast. Once we got the track I got a lot better. The week before states I was here every day practicing.” On the day of the clinic, 11 kids arrive from Carbondale, followed by several from Aspen and even more from the midvalley around Basalt, Missouri Heights and El Jebel. “It’s been pretty great so far,” says Tatum. “It’s a really successful track. Not once when I’ve come to ride it has there been no one else here. A lot of kids have gotten into BMX because of this track. Hardly anyone

knew about BMX before. Now tons of kids want to try it out, including a lot of kids at my school (Aspen Community School.)” Lisa Hatem, mother of Jeune Hollar, 7, and Hudson Hollar, 5, tells a similar story. Her son Husdon recently brought his racing bike for “Showing Day” at Wildwood Preschool. He proudly told his class about his sport, and kids crowded around to see his bike hear his stories of race day. “He comes in last at every race,” Hatem says with a smile, “but he doesn’t care. He does it because he loves it and he wants his trophy.” Hatem’s older son, Jeune, is homeschooled by her husband and the children’s father, Seth Hollar, so BMX has become Jeune’s social outlet as well as his new favorite sport. His love of BMX is also spurred in part by the success of Hatem’s 13-year-old nephew Gabe Hatem, a Felt Factorysponsored BMX racing phenom in New Jersey. Legends of the race track, tips on how to improve (“get in front first to win”) and lots of hand-me-downs keep the cousins connected. For Lisa Hatem there is an even more important connection that keeps her coming to the track. In December, Hatem’s 44-yearold brother Fred, father to Gabe, was killed in a car accident. Hatem now wears a necklace with Fred’s fingerprint on it. She holds it every time one of the boys races to calm the “mother’s nerves.” “BMX was huge in his life, it was a father-son thing,” she says. “When this track opened up I wanted to carry that on. This is my boys’ connection to Gabe and to Fred. It’s such a great way to keep my brother’s spirit going. I feel like my brother is here at every race.”

The SOCIAL SIDE of TOWN

THE ACES PICNIC SUMMER IN ASPEN is a kaleidoscope of activities — sometimes there are three to four events a week. I think I have enough photos to last until Christmas. Anyway, I will start including some of the very special picnics and parties and events. Early every summer, when the evenings are long and the MARY ESHBAUGH weather balmy, the HAYES Aspen Center for Environmental Studies gives a picnic for their members and anyone from the public who would like to come. It’s always a wonderful evening with the band playing, a picnic dinner on the lawn and children tumbling and running every which way. Undercurrent...I wish summer was as long as winter and winter as short as summer!

PICNIC Chris Lane, the new director of ACES, Willard and Anne Clapper.

PICNIC Pete Yang and Steve Francone.

PICNIC The Gonzalez family: Rora, Ava, Michelle and Ramon.

PICNIC Jamie Cundiff, forest director, and Jason Smith, director of Rock Bottom Ranch.

PICNIC Sandy Simpson, Don Davidson and Steve Prudden.

PICNIC Phyllis Bronson, Karen Woodard and Julie Paxton.

PICNIC ACES’ naturalist Courtney Kelly, Elliot Lustig and Olivia Siegel.

THE WOODY ALLEN BLUES FILMMAKER RETURNS TO FORM WITH ‘BLUE JASMINE’

IT’S BEEN A ROUGH 15 or so years for Woody Allen diehards. Each and every year, Allen dutifully puts out a movie, and each and every year essentially the same review rises to the top of the promotional materials: “Allen’s best work in years.” Unfortunately, they rarely say just how

simply isn’t so, but Allen’s efforts have been commendable. The darkroom kiss between Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz alone would save “Vicki Cristina Barcelona.”) I hate to admit this, but I have had a secret remedy for Allen’s late-career malaise. A minor health scare would

tape player. Yes, I can still recite huge chunks of “Love and Death” by heart; all I need is to be asked. I consider this my cultural awakening. I was 12, and had discovered something completely satisfying on my own. “Love and Death” wasn’t assigned in school; it

many years, and each time the promise is largely empty: Sure, this new work might be his best movie since “Hollywood Ending” — a low bar to clear — but the film doesn’t rank with the ones on which Allen made his reputation. That old habit of looking to Allen for something unexpected, extraordinary and unique hasn’t quite died. Each year the title of the new movie starts ringing in my head with a note of hope. And each year my hopes are dashed to varying degrees. Some of the recent movies have been on the whole enjoyable (“Midnight in Paris,” “Match Point”); others have been sheer disappointments (“Hollywood Ending” and “The Curse of the Jade Scorpion,” which came back-to-back in 2001-’02, Allen’s post-millennial crisis years). What has united them all is a patent lack of ambition, as Allen recycles jokes, substitutes European settings for ideas, and evidences a belief that the sight of a knockout actress or two can salvage a project. (This last belief

cause him to realize his time is short, the number of films left is limited, his legacy is being jeopardized with each new middling effort, and he should start digging deep — hey, maybe even shoot a second take of a scene if need be, and risk missing the first few minutes of a Knicks game. Lord knows, no one would have his world shaken by a minor health scare like Allen would. I’ve been a sucker for Allen for a long time. In 1976, three life-changing things came into my world: cable TV, VCRs, and Allen’s “Love and Death.” Thanks to the first two, my junior high school friends and I watched the third repeatedly, to the point that most of our conversations were made up of dialogue from Allen’s endlessly funny satire on Russian literature. Even my mother was infected, quoting lines like “Swimming out to the open sea, like the great … wild … herring.” How deep was our obsession? My brother and I made a cassette tape of the movie — that is, audio only — and schlepped it around with us with a portable

wasn’t recommended by parents or a friend’s older sibling. Allen’s humor and take on the world made sense to a bunch of New York-area suburban adolescents who were preparing for their bar mitzvahs. “Love and Death” — a quirky piece of Allen’s filmography, filled with spoofs, nonsequiturs and inside jokes pertaining to Russian history — has such a unique place for me that, when ranking our favorite Allen films, my brother and I give “Love and Death” its own category. It was a great time to be introduced to Allen. His next film was “Annie Hall,” kicking off a decade-long romp that would include “Manhattan,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Zelig,” and my two personal non-“Love and Death” favorites, “Broadway Danny Rose” and “The Purple Rose of Cairo.” Around 2000, Allen seemed to switch rather suddenly into autopilot. His remarkable practice of putting out

a film a year seemed to become more an addiction than a testament to his discipline. He stitched together old ideas, lifted gags from his old scripts and used scenes that were better left on the cutting-room floor. Most of the films were decent, or at least had some worthwhile scenes. But a moviegoer who started watching Allen’s films around 2000, not knowing what had come before, would have wondered what all the fuss was about. Now it’s my turn to join the chorus: “Blue Jasmine” is Woody Allen’s best film since … I’m going to say “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” which takes us back to 1989. Interestingly, “Blue Jasmine” (which shows in Aspen at least through Thursday, Sept. 12) has much in common thematically with the masterful “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” as Allen, in serious mode, examines the price we pay for self-delusion and unethical behavior. “Blue Jasmine” takes off on the Bernie Madoff story. Cate Blanchett stars as Jasmine — or Janet, to those who knew her back in the day before she was a New York society lady. The film flashes back to Jasmine’s glory days of benefit galas and houses in the Hamptons, but present-day reality is much harsher. Her fraud of a husband, Hal (Alec Baldwin) has been taken down, and Jasmine is reduced to moving in with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) in a low-budget San Francisco apartment crowded with kids and blue-collar boyfriends. The characters, especially Jasmine, take over the film; there is a sense that they are unleashed, that anything can happen (and by anything, I don’t mean time-traveling back to the 1920s, as in “Midnight in Paris”). Allen hands “Blue Jasmine” over to the actors, a wise move considering he has Blanchett leading the way. Her performance as the manipulative, delusional, Blanche DuBois-like Jasmine is stunning, and Blanchett seems to pull the entire film up to her level. In a sense, “Blue Jasmine” might not even be called a Woody Allen film. Allen doesn’t appear on-screen, there are no jokes, and Blanchett owns the movie in a way rarely seen in an Allen project. If this is the way of Allen’s future, I’ll gladly take it. It’s good to have the Woodman back.

DESTINATION | TRANS-AMERICA TRAIL

by ANDY STONEHOUSE

ROVING THE LAND

TACKLING 5,000 MILES OF THE TRANS-AMERICA TRAIL LAND ROVER, in all of its worldly and adventurous spirit, figured it ought to be the first off-road-friendly make to tackle the Trans-America Trail — a system of unpaved back roads, ATV trails and desert goat paths created for motorcyclists, running from North Carolina to the Oregon coast. That’s just the kind of

thing the 65-year-old British brand likes to do, for kicks. And so, in late July, a quartet of fully loaded Land Rover LR4 SUVs hit the very dusty road from the Biltmore Hotel in Asheville, N.C., and headed out west into parts unknown, faithfully following the trail’s route. Well, as much as they could: It

turns out it’s a very big country with unpredictable road conditions, and even a few forest fires thrown in for dramatic effect. I got a chance to join up with the Land Rover Expedition America in Richfield, Utah, as the vehicles continued their grueling journey across some of the most exciting parts of the entire trail. Oddly enough, for those of you who’ve driven to Vegas a few times, much of the first day’s journey was within visual range of I-70, just before it joins up with I-15, though we had a very, very different experience — with journalists at the wheel the whole trip. Out east, they’d survived waistdeep, flash-flooded river crossings in Oklahoma and, more recently, a 15-hour day rock crawling on the San Rafael Swell. Now we had some uncharted territory ahead of us up in the Fishlake National Forest. Perhaps the most surprising thing is that nobody with the Land Rover team had actually physically pre-scouted the trail. Tom “T.C.” Collins, a Carbondalebased Land Rover program guide, had first suggested the trip to the company more than two decades ago, and volunteered to serve as navigator on the whole trip. He’d recently eyeballed almost the entire route (available from trail founder Sam Correro’s website, on a long reel of maps made for motorcycle riders) using zoomed-in Google Earth maps, but he admitted this chunk might be iffy, as he really couldn’t tell how wide some of the trails were. Like each of the previous 150- to 200-mile days, T.C. and his crew were on the road by 7 a.m., this day with hopes of making it to the Border Inn hotel and casino near Baker, Nev., by sunset. We had a lot of territory to cross — but if we didn’t make it, the burly LR4s were also loaded up with roof racks carrying fuel, a dwindling supply of spare tires, plus loads of camping gear and an entire pallet of freeze-dried camp food. They’d pitched tents at 10,000 feet near Lake Land Rover LR4s make their way through rocky Nevada backcountry roads as part of a massive cross-country adventure program.

City a few nights before and woke up to a dusting of snow the next morning. T.C.’s predictions about the unknown nature of that day’s drive came true almost immediately. After hitting a couple of dead ends several hours up West Mountain Road — including a difficult, rocky chute into Cottonwood Creek that looked promising but ended up being nothing more than a mountain bike trail — a frustrated but cool T.C. admitted he’d done everything he could, but he’d have to find a workaround. We ended up backtracking southeast down the mountain range, crossing under I-70 and into Joseph, Utah, then back around through Fremont Indian State Park and up Clear Creek Canyon Road on gravel roads — in order to rejoin the official motorcycle route, and end up grabbing a much-needed lunch in Kanosh. The rest of my portion of the trip, as far as Battle Mountain, Nev., took us on a mix of wide-open desert roads, winding pinyon pine canyons and mining trails. We crossed the Pony Express route near Eureka, Nevada, and we concluded that trail founder Correro might have a slightly masochistic streak — each day, as we neared our much-needed stopping point, the trail would suddenly veer off of improved gravel roads and head onto a cow trail or through a rocky ravine for four miles, just to mess with our heads. But the duo of motorcycle riders from Truckee, Calif., who we shadowed for three days (some days they were the only people we encountered), said they loved the variety of the route, and were also pretty amazed to see the Land Rovers successfully tackling the whole route. A couple of days later, forest fires in Southern Oregon created the biggest roadblock for the entire journey, but T.C. and the crew still managed to find a slightly different path of logging roads and hit the beach, only one day behind schedule.

BOOK REVIEW

‘A GUIDE TO BEING BORN’ WHEN AN INNOVATIVE style is a writer’s main goal, emotional subtleties tend to fall by the wayside. Ramona Ausubel, raised in New Mexico and now based in California, crafts literary fiction that manages to keep out the chill. The stories in “A Guide to Being Born” have a lot of heart, and their characters are well worth rooting for, no matter how improbable their situations. Ausubel’s lush and playful prose transports the reader to a mysterious world: Departed grandmothers embark on an endless afterlife cruise, people in love sprout an extra arm, and the thought of becoming two intertwined saguaro cactuses brings a new couple together. Ausubel divides “A Guide to Being Born” into four sections, “Birth,” “Gestation,” “Conception” and “Love,” and her stories delve into these by JOHN FARMER | edited by WILL SHORTZ

he stores both essential and fanciful items while he waits for the birth, including his wife’s lipstick and tiny plastic baby dolls. Ausubel makes this scenario — a beautifully loopy metaphor for a father trying to participate in the physical changes his pregnant wife undergoes — feel real. At the conclusion of another story, Ausubel writes, “Life crawled over other life, devoured it, opened itself up to whatever it had been given. The whole world squirmed with hunger and desire, in the thick and thin places, in the trees and in the clearings.” That passage exemplifies this honest and life-affirming collection of tales.

quintessential human experiences in original ways. In the moving and surprising “Poppyseed,” the parents of a severely disabled, mute and immobile girl named Poppy consider a surgery that will halt her development. Poppy’s mother is secretly glad that although her daughter remains the size of a second-grader, her sexual maturation is progressing. She writes in a letter to Poppy, “I went into your room and shook your hand. I wanted to congratulate you on your optimism. Poppy, your body is going about its business … to make ready for new life.” In the funny “Chest of Drawers,” a father-to-be eagerly follows the development of his baby, yearning to participate physically in the miracle of gestation. One day several 2-inch drawers appear in his chest, where
