Why does the GOP persist with a losing gambit? It’s been two years now that Republican Party leaders have bet the farm on killing President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act (or ACA — I cannot bring my fingers to type out the derogatory shorthand tag for the program), and they still don’t get it. They lost the presidential election in 2012, at least in part, because they tied their hopes to a mythical anti-ACA fervor in the nation. There is no such fervor of anti-ACA sentiment among the nation’s voters. Poll after poll has shown that while a majority of Americans don’t love Obama’s stab at health care reform, they like it a lot more than the Republicans seeming willingness to simply let the free market continue to hold our health hostage. As has been noted over and over again, the Republican leadership seems to be living in an echo chamber, where the loudest mouth is the one that wins dominance. And that loudest mouth happens to be plastered on the faces of Tea Party fanatics, who have convinced themselves that the entire nation will follow their lead to destroy the ACA no matter how illogical and hate-based it is. The foolishness of that approach can be seen even among the Republican base. Fox News commentator Julie Roginsky on Sept. 20 delivered an opinion piece that started out, “Republican voters, your leaders in Washington are lying to you.” She went on to argue that the national party leadership, which has set up a possible shut-down of the federal government if the president doesn’t agree at least to delay implementation of the ACA, knows it is doing the political equivalent of pissing into the wind. “Just because you passionately believe in something does not mean that your neighbor agrees. Even if your neighbor agrees, it does not mean that the rest of the nation does,” she wrote, with admirably clear thinking and obvious passion. “The more you tilt at this particular windmill,” she continued, “the more non-primary Republican voters

wonder why you are not addressing pressing issues of government, where both sides can actually work together to make progress on the myriad issues facing this nation. Please, get out of the echo chamber. Your leaders are telling you what you want to hear, so that you don’t support a primary challenge from the right against them next year.” Even Karl Rove, Republican strategist and mouthpiece, recently conceded (also on Fox News) that the GOP’s campaign to defund the ACA only helps the president’s cause. So why do Republican leaders persist with this losing gambit? Cynical political calculations aside, it’s hard to tell. One partial explanation may be the tendency on the part of Republicans to live in a fantasy land of their own creation. Starting with Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America” theme in the 1980s, the party has banked its future on a myth. That myth, of course, is that we can roll back the clock to some imaginary time when white men ruled the United States with a benevolent, omnipotent hand, everybody was well off or getting rich, and all was well in the land. Well, that country never existed except for the privileged classes, and we all need to admit it. With regard to health care, the mythologists of the Republican party like to say we have the best health care in the world, but that is demonstrably not true. Technologically, we’re not at the top of this heap today, if we ever were. The growing phenomenon of medical tourism is the best example of that truth. And the fact that nearly one-fifth of our economy is swallowed up by the health care industry, even while tens of millions of our citizens are underserved by our insurance-driven health care model, is further evidence against the myth and of the need for continuing reform, even starting with such a flawed and inadequate platform as the Affordable Care Act.

RECENTLY OPENED With that stinker of a cinematic summer over, serious filmgoers get rewarded with a stack of movies that feel appropriate to the autumn/ back-to-school/offthe-beach season. “Blue Jasmine” was the ambitious effort Woody Allen fans have been waiting for (although it might be more accurately called a Cate Blanchett effort). The comedy “In a World,” about a family of voice-over actors, is the debut by 30-something writer-director Lake Bell; it earned a screenwriting award at Sundance. “Prisoners,” by French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, is being hailed as the sort of crime thriller that rises above the genre, with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal at the center of a missing-child case. And the affecting “The Butler” is still in local theaters after three weeks, a testament to its widespread appeal.

BELLY UP has cut back on its film screening schedule for the fall, but it’s hard to complain — admission is free, the club is a surprisingly good place to catch a movie, and the one title on its schedule is a good one. “Iron Man 3” has Robert Downey Jr., still in impressive comeback form, in the role of brash industrialist/superhero Tony Stark. The film, which earned solid reviews from the critics and the public, has also got the kind of special effects that play better on the Belly Up’s big screen and stellar sound system than they would at home. “Iron Man 3,” with appearances by Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce, shows Wednesday, Sept. 25.

WHETHER YOU’RE familiar with his writing or not, whether you disagree with his liberal views or are bitterly opposed, you can’t help but be compelled by the character that was Gore Vidal and the life he led. The novelist, screenwriter and political commentator, who died last year, was born into American politics, worked his way into literary circles, was a favorite of TV talkshow hosts. Director Nicholas Wrathall’s documentary, “Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia,” does a fine job of bringing its subject to life — but a viewer is tempted to ask, How could it not? Everything Vidal did was touched by a verbal panache and intellectual daring that seems to belong to a bygone time, he loved the camera, and left behind a trove of material to remind us of what he stood for, and how passionate he was in his beliefs. The film shows at noon on Friday, Sept. 27 at Paepcke Auditorium as part of Aspen Filmfest.

WOMEN: MIH (MISSING IN HISTORY) When men recorded history over the millennia, they wrote about men for men. For example, when a committee chose among old books to comprise the Bible, they left out the gospel of Mary of Magdala. It hasn’t been until recent decades that the other half of the story — history by women, about women and for women — has become widely accessible. During the 1970s, feminist humanities researchers discovered another of many stumbling blocks to a more balanced account of humans: sexist indexes. You could not easily find information about our founding mothers because their stories were indexed neither within books nor in library card files. A project to re-index the material began to redress that bias. The digital age in many cases allows you to bypass indexing. Problem solved? Well, almost. Research about the history of women’s suffrage in Aspen reveals a dearth of information even today. Colorado became the second state to allow women to vote, through the impatient push of its women. Aspen — home to Davis Waite, who championed the cause and signed the bill as governor — was a progressive community that included strong pioneering women; however, women seem almost invisible to Aspen’s newspapers of the period leading up to the 1893 ballot initiative. The first major mention of the suffrage movement noted the visit by

material he had to start with.” Human rights aside, an economic question (whether to continue to use silver for coinage) dominated the 1893 election. All political parties offered support for silver, and even Chapman

The league held several meetings to organize support, culminating in a competition: those for or against women’s suffrage could state their reasons and afterward a panel would vote for the winning cases. The evening’s speeches turned toward jovial jabs about the absent opposition. One lady said, “if God made woman from a part of man His work was marvelous considering the poor

garnered audience attention during her address when she expressed her backing for silver coinage. It appears that locally the passage of woman’s suffrage was a foregone conclusion, perhaps because eight years previously Colorado had tested the waters by allowing women to vote for board of education positions. As with the state issue, eventually the national suffrage politics of 1920 received little attention in Aspen. Although there had been mention that

women who served on the board of education had been a disappointment, there was no written opposition to ratification of the 19th amendment. Aspen’s newspapers did not focus on individuals at that time; interviews and in-depth reporting of issues were rare. Nonetheless, family lore (my grandmother actively supported suffrage) suggests that all women were purposefully left out of the papers. The papers may have ignored women’s suffrage because women organized for a host of issues, chief among them temperance. Many Aspen women joined the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and became activists at home, protesting their husbands’ behavior. Excessive drinking, smoking and male irresponsibility presented personal family problems, as well as public challenges; securing the ballot became a secondary objective as a means to acquire thousands of votes in order to gain legislative control over these primary issues. Accounts of Aspen’s suffragette struggle remain buried in diaries and oral history. Although the movement changed lives and the nation, no one read the story first in Aspen’s papers of record, leaving the reader to wonder how many crucial stories of today go unreported. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. WORDS to DRINK BY

A WINE FRONTIER WASHINGTON STATE, THEN AND NOW

In the 1980s, if the rest of the country gave much thought to the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest, the things that came to mind were likely rain, Boeing Jets and, perhaps, the Seattle Seahawks. But things began to compute, percolate, rock and ferment with the people who called Washington home during that decade. The resulting revolutions changed not only the perception of the state, but also the rest of the country, and even the world, KELLY J. HAYES forever. On Jan. 1, 1979, a couple of Seattle “kids” named Bill and Paul moved their small software company from New Mexico back home to Bellevue, Wash., and launched Microsoft. In 1981, Howard Schultz stumbled on a little coffee shop opposite Seattle’s Pike Place Market and envisioned the future of caffeine. Not long after, bands, like Mudhoney, the Melvins and Nirvana, took to the stage creating a musical movement that would evolve and explode onto the scene as Grunge. And out on the plains and the hills east of the Cascade Mountains, a group of folks with similar dreams began to plant grapes, build wineries and create a wine culture that has led Washington to become the second largest viticulture region in the nation. Today, Washington wines constitute an industry that generates $3 billion dollars a year and is growing. Coincidence? I don’t think so. There are times in history when people and places come together to create eras of excellence. Washington and the surrounding Northwest, a place some call Cascadia, went through such a creative and cultural shift in the 1980s that it will resonate throughout history. I had the opportunity to view

much of this firsthand when I took a whirlwind one-week tour of the Washington wine country recently. I saw magnificent vineyards, met wonderful, passionate and creative wine-folk and witnessed what is still just the seminal days of a wine region that has barely scratched the surface of what it can and will become. Over the next few weeks I’ll share the stories of the people I met and the wines I drank. But first, a little background. My journey began at the beginning. That is to say I drove north from the Emerald City, a town still quivering with excitement from the aforementioned Seahawks victory over the 49ers the night before, to the bucolic community of Woodinville and the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. Not only is CSM the largest wine company in Washington, it has its very roots in the earliest plantings in the state. Following prohibition in the 1930s, the National Wine Company and a company called Pommerelle rushed to take advantage of the new demand for both grape and fruit wines. These two companies began planting vineyards, and eventually merged to become American Wine Growers, the founding company of Ste. Michelle Vintners, which was launched in 1967. While grapes were grown in the Columbia Valley and to the east, there was hardly an industry. Washington agricultural law at the time was not supportive of a wine industry as other interests held sway making it difficult, if not impossible, to make a profit growing viniferous grapes. Enter Walter Clore and Chas Nagel, a horticulturist and food scientist, respectively, from Washington State University. The pair had done massive research into the potential of growing great grapes for wines in the Washington vineyards and

took their findings to the state Legislature in 1969. Their evidence was so overwhelming that laws were changed to encourage the planting of wine grapes. Just less than a decade later, in the bicentennial year of 1976, the Chateau opened its magnificent grounds for visitors and the revolution was on. CSM began hosting visitors and making great wines. A 1972, vintage Riesling was the first to capture acclaim, but it was not long before Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay bottlings began to garner attention. “Out east” the wine revolution had its first awaking in 1977, when visionaries Gary and Nancy Figgins launched Leonetti Cellars in the Walla Walla wheat farming region in the extreme Northeast corner of the state. They were followed in short order by other wine pioneers, like Rick Small who launched Woodward Canyon, and Jean and Baker Ferguson who renamed a small schoolhouse L’Ecole No. 41

and created an iconic image for the region. Today, Woodinville has grown around the Chateau to become a destination for those who love wine, beer (Redhook), great food (Herbfarm) and the chance to taste all three. Walla Walla is now home to more than a hundred wineries. There are 13 distinct wine growing appellations, AVAs as they are called, and more are on the drawing board. From Walter Clore to the growers and winemakers of today, many have contributed to making Washington state a significant player on the global wine stage. WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER! FALL MENU SPECIALS ARE MEANT FOR LOCALS

The way my friend Stacy tells it, she was cruising through City Market on Wednesday after dusk, in search of a simple dinner. Suddenly, in the poultry aisle, a light bulb flashed inside her head. She dashed outside, across the blustery, half-empty parking lot and made a beeline to Hyman Avenue, where she found me and an outof-town pal tucked into AMANDA a corner booth at Little RAE Annie’s Eating House. Our table was a still life of post-meal satisfaction: tangles of used silverware, beer ghosts in pint glasses, shredded paper napkins crumpled into greasy nuggets. After a few words with the hostess, Stacy spun around to face us. “You guys got the last order!” she squealed, right as my dining companion was tucking a leftover chicken thigh and half a homemade biscuit into a to-go box. “I just remembered that tonight is the first night! Ah. How much you want for that?” I figured Stacy was joking, but a moment later she confessed that she was serious, sort of. Little Annie’s Fried Chicken Dinner ($15.95) — three massive specimens of crispy light and dark meat, mashed potatoes, ear of corn and a softball-size biscuit, available on Wednesday evenings during offseason only until it sells out — has drawn a cult-like following since its introduction back in 1972. (All-you-can-eat beef ribs, plus sides, are popular on Monday nights, too.) I ain’t from Kentucky, but I know that 41 years and secret seasoning make for mighty fine fried chicken. “I heard about this when I first moved here, 15 years ago,” Stacy says. “It’s my favorite thing. Nothing else even comes to mind. They serve a pretty big portion — I always have leftovers, always.” Now that crowds have mostly scattered and nights are cooling fast, Aspen’s dining landscape is

in surreal flux once again. (Was summer just a dream?) A handful of restaurants shut down for a spell starting this weekend (Cache Cache, Gisella, Pacifica, Pinions, and Syzygy, all of which are offering affordable prix-fixe menus; see “The Price is Right,” opposite page), as do others for periods of varying lengths until Thanksgiving. The brave few march on without so much as a day off (Cantina, Ryno’s Pies & Pints, The White House Tavern, and J-Bar at Hotel Jerome, among others). What all have in common: a tradition of discounting dishes that feed year-round supporters. Fried chicken sizzles at Rustique, too. On Thursdays, the French bistro serves a much sought-after three-course fried chicken dinner with salad, sides and house-made sorbet, for $24. “We do it every offseason, for about four or five years now,” says owner Rob Ittner. “Love to tell you some story about a small town in the south of France that has been frying chicken since the Middle Ages, but I can’t. We used to make

it for our restaurant family meal. It (became) a hit and we stuck with it.” Creperie du Village, an especially cozy hideaway once the snow falls, is whetting diners’ appetites for winter with 40 percent off fondue and raclette, until it closes for a month starting Oct. 7. The Red Onion slashes 50 percent off all bottles of wine (with a food order), and will even deliver a complimentary beer with every entrée on Thursdays. Element 47 at The Little Nell has created a $47, three-course prix-fixe option, which includes a glass of wine. An added bonus for parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings: free babysitting and a dinner buffet for up to two kids. Given Aspen’s penchant for perching counter-side, bar menus are ubiquitous, whether standardissue or expanded for fall. Tendollar pizzas and happy hour drinks return to the Limelight Lounge from 3-7 p.m., and Eight K at the Viceroy Snowmass has a case of the Crazy 8s: Southern-comfort small plates, such as soft-shell crab

tacos, corn-fried okra with fresh horseradish, and popcorn crawfish, for eight bucks each, daily at 3 p.m. Football specials at local watering holes on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays are a whole other story (look for it in the coming weeks). No doubt that some local deals were designed to drain costly ingredients in preparation for a much-anticipated pre-holiday break. But most of these specials are offered in gratitude to the patrons who filter through familiar doors, day after day, night after night. Former New York Times critic Frank Bruni may have also summed up the current Aspen atmosphere in his latest ode to favorite Big Apple eateries: “Regulars matter to a restaurant. Though the newcomers drawn there by reviews or Yelp chatter can keep it packed for a while, the familiar faces help it go the distance.” Amanda Rae will be at the bar. NOTEWORTHY PUMPKICK (New Belgium Brewing, Colorado) Style: Pumpkin ale Alcohol: 6 percent Notes: What’s that bite of tartness doing in a pumpkin beer? Adding the unexpected kick of cranberry juice to brighten this traditionally spiced seasonal ale. Pumpkick is brewed with plenty of pumpkin juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, but it’s the cranberries and touch of lemongrass that send your taste buds sailing.

PUMPKIN BEERS If summer is the season for fruity cocktails and crisp white wines, fall is the time of year for beer — or at least it is in my world. And while there’s nothing wrong with a frosty Bud Light for Monday Night Football, what I really want on these brilliant but brisk autumn afternoons is a good craft beer. Thankfully, there are many to choose from — including an array of seasonal beers that pair great with the foods we crave with the change of season. To name a few, specifically brewed for the Halloween-lover in all of us: Pumpkin Ale from Schlafly Beer in St. Louis, Mo., Punkin Ale from Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Del., and Pumpkick by our own Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing.

PUMPKIN ALE (Schlafly Beer, St. Louis, Mo.) Style: Pumpkin ale Alcohol: 8 percent Notes: Pounds of pumpkin are combined with clove, cinnamon and nutmeg to create what Schlafly says has been referred to as “liquid pumpkin pie.” This full-bodied, deep amber ale is ideal for a Halloween party, pumpkin carving and other autumn celebrations. Goes particularly well with apple pie and smoked meats. PUNKIN ALE (Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Del.) Style: Spiced brown ale Alcohol: 7 percent Notes: Named after the annual Punkin Chunkin Festival held near Lewes, Del., the weekend after Halloween, Dogfish Head’s Punkin Ale is a go-to fall beer. While other pumpkin beers can be overpowering with their spices, Punkin Ale is first and foremost a brown ale, but is complemented with more subtle flavors of pumpkin, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. It loves roast meats and sharp cheddar.

Dunton Hot Springs

Every morning you wake up at Dunton Hot Springs in Dunton, Colo., an authentic ghost town circa 1893 that has been transformed into a luxury resort, the world around you is different. Aspen groves change before your eyes, turning a vibrant orange, yellow then gold. Snow dusts the peaks of the mountain around you. Located near the town of Cortez, about one hour southwest of Telluride, Dunton was once home to about 3,000 people. The saloon’s bar itself is carved with hundreds of names of those who drank there before, including that of Butch Cassidy. While it has never been fully authenticated, it is said the legendary outlaw stopped in Dunton in 1889 en route to Utah after robbing the San Miguel Valley Bank in Telluride. Today, guests can stroll in at any time of day to pull a cold Ska Brewing beer from the tap, enjoy a glass of Sutcliffe Vineyards wine, or pour a cocktail to enjoy anywhere on the property, including the historic bathhouse that covers one of the legendary hot springs, or in the library that houses hundreds of books from the classics to modern art. Endless hiking and mountain biking trails, horseback riding, fishing and exploration allow guests to get lost in the surrounding wilderness, until the lunch bell rings at noon or the fire pit is ablaze at dinnertime. Smith Fork Ranch

Located just outside of Paonia near the Needle Rock formation, and surrounded by the Gunnison National Forest, this historic property was once a working guest ranch, hosing communal gatherings, dinners and celebrations. WEST ELK LOOP SCENIC AND HISTORIC BYWAY One of the best drives in the country during fall is right in our own backyard, because it brings you over Kebler Pass, which is home to the largest aspen grove in the nation. The West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway is shaped like a lasso that’s been dropped on Colorado’s pristine communities of Carbondale, Redstone, Montrose, Gunnison and Crested Butte. Take in the view of Mount Sopris and the Crystal River Valley up to Marble, where the byway crosses McClure Pass through the Upper North Fork Valley before reaching Paonia and Hotchkiss, home to a network of orchards and farms in the area (great apple picking!). Moving south, the loop passes the Black Canyon of the Gunnison between Montrose and Gunnison. Finally there’s the Butte, you know it and love it. We all do, but it’s the drive back toward Carbondale, over Kebler Pass that will really blow your mind this time of year. Pad your drive time with several stops for picnic and picture-taking.

Red Rooster Ranch

Hidden high above Glenwood Springs along a dirt road, far past the Spring Valley campus of Colorado Mountain College, stands a yellow European country house with a red roof — the Red Rooster Ranch. A small guest house with four rooms and soaring views of the Roaring Fork Valley, Mount Sopris and the surrounding forests, this property houses about eight guests at a time. Owner Gretchen Hayduk-Wroblewski, an adjunct professor of writing at CMC, conceived of hosting small groups of artists, writers and independent travelers when she and her husband, Stash, built their home in 2001. Decorated with antiques from her husband’s native Poland, you are transported to a hill town in Tuscany as you sit at the kitchen table. WHEN WILL COLORS PEAK THIS YEAR?

How will all of this rain and wind affect the aspen foliage this year? The simple answer is this: the more sun we get, the brighter the colors. Cool nights and warm days make for the best fall foliage show. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the amount and brilliance of the colors that develop in any particular autumn season are related to weather conditions that occur before and during the time the chlorophyll in the leaves is dwindling. Temperature and moisture are the main influences. “A succession of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp but not freezing nights seems to bring about the most spectacular color displays. During these days, lots of sugars are produced

in the leaf but the cool nights and the gradual closing of veins going into the leaf prevent these sugars from moving

out. These conditions — lots of sugar and lots of light — spur production of the anthocyanin pigments, which tint

reds, purples, and crimson. Because carotenoids are always present in leaves, the yellow and gold colors remain fairly constant from year to year. The amount of moisture in the soil also affects autumn colors. A late spring, or a severe summer drought, can delay the onset of fall color by a few weeks. A warm period during fall will also lower the intensity of autumn colors. A warm wet spring, favorable summer weather, and warm sunny fall days with cool nights should produce the most brilliant autumn colors. More rain or a deep freeze will arrest the foliage or cause them to drop earlier than normal.” The Forest Service’s fall color hotline (1-800-354-4595) will provide details as the autumn color display progresses.

ROLL OVER MOUSE MUSIC ASPEN FILMFEST SCREENS DOCUMENTARY ON ARHOOLIE RECORDS One night over dinner, in 2003 or thereabouts, Chris Simon mentioned to her filmmaking colleague, Maureen Gosling, that she had an idea for a project — a documentary on Arhoolie Records. Gosling was completely receptive: “She said, ‘I’ve been thinking about that too. I was going to ask you,’” Simon recalled. A phenomenal coincidence, that the two filmmakers both happened to be thinking about a tiny, quirky music label that focused on the rootsiest of niches — Cajun, old acoustic blues, the Mexican norteño style? Perhaps not. For some 25 years, beginning in the late ’70s, Simon and Gosling worked for another filmmaker, Les Blank, whose studio was in the same building, in the East San Francisco Bay town of El Cerrito, that housed Arhoolie and its owner, Chris Strachwitz. Simon and Gosling weren’t only neighbors of Arhoolie; they shared Strachwitz’s attraction to home-grown music styles. “It wasn’t like it wasn’t obvious,” Simon said of the project. “We looked at this and went, ‘These are like home movies.’ We lived that all the time.” The biggest reason neither Simon nor Gosling had thought to make a film about Arhoolie earlier was a shortage of experience. The two had not established themselves as filmmakers; instead, they were known as associates of Blank, who specialized in portraits of American musicians. (Simon had also been married to Blank, who died earlier this year.) But in 2004, Simon and Gosling realized how ready they were to make a film of their own. They had approached Strachwitz with their idea, and Strachwitz was reluctant. “He’s a very shy guy. You wouldn’t think that, meeting him, but he doesn’t like fuss,” Simon said from her home in Salt Lake City. Not long after, the filmmakers got word that Strachwitz was going to do a documentary with PBS. “We said, Wait, what about us? We were part of that scene, that musical scene — roots music in America and how it got there.” Simon and Gosling’s documentary, “This Ain’t No Mouse Music!” is

a story not only of music, but of home, family and community. The film, which shows Thursday, Sept. 26 at Aspen Filmfest, tells of how Strachwitz, a member of an wellto-do German family, was forced to resettle in the U.S. following World War II. In the States, he began collecting jazz records, and then had his ears spun around by hearing Southern folk blues players. From the time he saw Lightning Hopkins play in a tiny club in Houston, and soon after that recorded Hopkins, Strachwitz made a habit of befriending the people he worked with. The musicians — including Cajun fiddler Michael Doucet of the band Beausoleil, zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier, and the West Texas accordionist Flaco Jiménez, all of whom appear extensively in the film — became Strachwitz’s extended family. Simon and Gosling, being essentially insiders to the Arhoolie history, were able to instill that sense of familiarity into “This Ain’t No Mouse Music!” “We got that comfortableness from Chris. We were comfortable with everyone else in that film, too. We knew everyone,” Simon said. “It’s hard to beat that kind of access and familiarity. That crystallizes how important that family around him is. I hope the audience comes out of the film feeling like they’re part of the Arhoolie family.” Having been friends with their subject, the filmmakers come off as protective of Strachwitz in the documentary. There is occasional mention of how fiercely opinionated Strachwitz can be — especially when it comes to “mouse music,” his derisive term for the commercial, mainstream pop music that dominates the cultural landscape — and autocratic in his musical choices for Arhoolie. “He’s super charming,

really enthusiastic,” Simon said. “But you don’t want to eat with him. He’s really opinionated.” Simon brings up an incident with California singerguitarist Dave Alvin. Strachwitz wanted Alvin to deliver a message to Los Lobos, the celebrated Los Angeles Mexi-rock band — that Los Lobos played too fast. “He’s that kind of guy,” Simon said. Onscreen, however, Strachwitz, now in his 80s, is portrayed as paternal and generous with his artists and a gentle lover of soulful music. Still, the intimate and goodhearted approach feels appropriate for the film, given the subject matter. Much of the music-making that gets onscreen takes place not in theaters or even clubs, but at family picnics and casual rooms that were clearly not designed for stellar acoustics. “This is back-porch music. You hear the real thing,” said Simon, who, along with Gosling, will be in attendance for the screening. “Authenticity is a big buzz word — but this is authentic. You hear community. That’s not something Justin Bieber is talking about much.” Without forcing the point, “This Ain’t No Mouse Music” draws a sharp line between the music manufactured by the recording industry — detached from its origins, well-packaged — and the music that gets Strachwitz’s stamp of approval, which springs from a foundation of history,

culture and community. Arhoolie, it is pointed out, by recording and releasing insular music styles, has helped connect younger generations to the music of their parents and grandparents. Regarding Cajun music, Simon said, “Chris brought it out of the community, and doing that restimulated the community. If he hadn’t done it, it might not have gotten done. That music creates bridges, made us aware of a multicultural society and not just a melting pot.” Simon at one point claims that Strachwitz “really did change the world.” (He did take home an award for lifetime achievement last week at the Americana Music Awards.) Simon says that America sees itself in a much different way than it did 30 years ago, and music has played a big role in that shift. People are aware of smaller subcultures that exist alongside the mainstream in a way they didn’t in the 1980s. “They’re aware of Cajun culture, blues music. They’re aware of these cultures,” she said. “And music makes that bridge in an emotional way. It goes to their guts. Even if they love Justin Bieber, they love this kind of music. “And it’s thriving. Old-time music is safe. As Joe Wilson, the folklorist, says in the film, there are a lot of young people playing this old-time music.”

‘BONELAND: LINKED STORIES’ Loss — real and potential — casts a shadow over the lives of the characters in Washington writer Nance Van Winckel’s poignant, deeply interconnected short stories. At the center of the collection is Lynette, who seems as trouble-prone as she is resilient. In the opening story, we meet her at age 40, reflecting on the nature of memory while attempting to recover from a laser eye surgery that has left her vision blurry and her thoughts jumbled. “Memory grows sharper, brighter. That’s what the sightless are told by the sighted,” she thinks, establishing the twin themes — memory and vision — that recur throughout “Boneland.” In another piece, a teenaged Lynette prepares for a different surgery — this one for her “humped, crooked old woman’s” scoliotic back. by searching for fossils. An older Lynette is wracked by guilt and grief over her husband’s death. She wonders: Was it suicide? The stories, set primarily in Spokane, Wash., and Montana, move backward and forward across time. Tracing the many connections — actual and symbolic — that wend their way throughout the collection gives the book a puzzle-like quality that lends itself to re-reading. In “Boneland,” Van Winckel has created a world where the past remains present and memory shapes the way we come to terms with loss.

her to “worm food” and is haunted by thoughts of her friend Nickki, who died recently when her family’s car was struck by a logging truck. “Blindsided” is the word Lynette recalls people using to describe the accident, and it’s an apt term considering the stress laid on sight throughout these metaphor-rich and memorable stories. Although Lynette and her family encounter what seems to be more than their fair share of obstacles over time, they refuse to be overcome. At age 8, cousin Jessie is left an orphan when her mother and sister are engulfed by a wave while spreading Jessie’s father’s ashes in the ocean. Another cousin, dropped when he was a baby, struggles to pass as one of what he calls “the normals.” An uncle whose daughter has gone missing tries to find solace
