FESTIVAL THE LEAVES ARE FALLING

and the temperature is dropping. Snow is already dusting the peaks and the Highland Bowl. Which means winter is coming and its stoke season in Aspen, with The Meeting taking over the Wheeler Opera House from Oct. 6 through 8 with the latest in ski and snowboard movies. Festivities begin on Thursday, Oct. 6 with a keynote talk from snowboard great Travis Rice and the annual Nepsa Awards showcasing the sickest and silliest in local ski movies (this year’s themes include “Make Aspen Great Again,” so expect a heavy dose of Trumpian humor). The movies in the lineup feature the usual cream of the ski porn crop, including Red Mull Media House’s “The Fourth Phase,” Powder’s “Monumental: Skiing the National Parks,” snowboard outfit Absinthe Films’ “AfterForever.” The festival’s closing feature is the new Teton Gravity Research offering “Tight Loose.” Individual tickets range from $10 to $15, available at the Wheeler Opera House and www.aspenshowtix.com. Beyond the big screen, the ski industry conference is bringing marketers, brands, athletes, media and filmmakers to town for talks and panels running through the weekend. Full conference passes are $399. Pick up the Oct. 7 Weekend section of The Aspen Times for more coverage of The Meeting.

The Meeting runs Oct. 6 through 8 at the Wheeler Opera House.

CURRENTEVENTS POPULAR MUSIC

RAPPER MICKEY AVALON brings his rhymes and his debauched stage show back to Belly Up on Friday, Oct. 9. Along with what promises to be another memorable show from the hard-partying performer behind “Jane Fonda,” the evening includes a screening of skier Tanner Hall’s latest movie, “Ring The Alarm,” for The Meeting crowd. Aspen’s own DJ Naka G opens. The show is scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at the Belly Up box office and www.bellyupaspen.com.

POPULAR MUSIC IN WHAT’S BECOME SOMETHING of a regular residency, funk greats and local favorites The New Mastersounds return to Belly Up on Sunday, Oct. 9. 1893 ASPEN

“BY AUGUST, WE WILL BE CONNECTED BY TELEPHONE WITH DENVER,” announced the Aspen Weekly Times on April 22, 1893. “The managers of the Colorado Telephone company now look forward to having Aspen connected by telephone with Denver by the latter part of next August. Preparations are already being made to begin the work as soon as possible. It will only be necessary to build to Leadville as a line is already in operation from that point to the Capital City. In building the line from Aspen to Leadville, the company will have the benefits of their experience already had in establishing the Leadville-Denver line. For about seven miles of the distance it will be necessary to lay underground a submarine cable in the same manner as was done on the now existing line. The company has the greatest confidence in the value of their undertaking. The charge for a five minutes talk between Aspen and Leadville will be 50 cents and from Aspen to Denver $1.50. Of course it is almost impossible to form any correct idea as to the real benefits to be derived from such a telephone line, but the manager of the company believes that the investment will pay them and of course they are the persons most directly interested in the undertaking.” This photo and more can be found in the Aspen Historical Society archives at aspenhistory.org.

GEAR of the WEEK

by STEPHEN REGENOLD

PADDLE IT: FOLD-UP ORU KAYAK THE SHEET OF PLASTIC is scored and notched, an intricate pattern that folds tight and packs up box-shape to fit in a backpack. Undo the package, crease the material at its flex points, and fasten the straps. Soon, a kayak will emerge. In 2013, a San Francisco startup brought a new concept to the boating world. Its pack-up kayaks employed a light and translucent material that would give travelers and urban-dwellers alike an option for storing and transporting a full-size watercraft. Today, Oru Kayak Inc. sells five models, each equipped with the rigging, seats, bulkheads, and cockpits you’d expect on a traditional boat. They come in 12- and 16-foot lengths, most with skirt-compatibility to seal a paddler in before heading offshore. I reviewed the Bay model, which costs $1,275. It is made in the USA and weighs about 25 pounds, which is light for a craft of its dimension. The price may seem high for a plastic boat. But the corrugated plastic used is tough, a wonder material that both flexes and folds while also providing a stable and solid hull on the water. The company notes its boats were inspired by traditional Greenland kayaks as well as Japanese origami techniques. The end product is indeed a melding of those two, and on the water I was impressed with its performance. I cut through waves, glided, swooped into currents, and treated the Bay like the sea kayak that it is. Note this is not a river kayak: The material is not made for rock bashing in rapids, and the design is built for tracking straight on open water. Assembly of the boat was frustrating at first. Despite watching an instructional video the setup was hardly pain-free. I forgot to fold in the ends, at the bow and stern, at the beginning and continued to assemble until the last step. At that point, a step to “stretch the neoprene fairings over the bow and stern” stymied my progress. Indeed, I was forced to disassemble the entire thing and start over. After another go, and 15 minutes of work with a partner, the craft was ready to get off the beach. Offshore, the Oru has the feel of a “real boat” -- because it is one. The Bay is responsive and fast, its light weight and sharp keel letting me paddle up to full speed in seconds. It’s stable and tracks straight. The cockpit is tight, and the seat is comfortable enough. There are foot braces. A semi-translucent hull filled with folds gives the illusion that water could seep in. But inside I never found a drop. Look to buy this boat if you need to save space. That includes people who live in apartments or travel in an RV. You can fit it in the trunk of a car, too. Or check out Oru for travel, be it on an airline, train, or overland by your own power. You can hike with this kayak on your back. Get to the water, and get the boat unfolded. Once set you have a seaworthy craft ready to paddle into almost any wave. Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

WINEINK

SOLID STEMS

GREAT GLASS FOR GREAT WINES I LOVE A GREAT WINE glass almost as much as I love a great glass of wine. There is something special about holding a well-made, well-balanced, glass in your hand, tilting it towards your nose, sniffing the wine inside and eventually bringing it to your lips for the first sip. Sure, you can do that with any glass. A juice jar will hold and convey liquid KELLY J. from a bottle to your HAYES mouth. But a great wine glass serves as a vessel to take you on a journey to the very origins of a bottle of wine. MY GLASS CABINET

As I am in the business, I have a plethora, call it an over abundance, of good glass. My steel and glass “glass cabinet,” purchased for peanuts from a local jewelry store that was going out of business, is home to 106 glasses. Yes, I counted them for this article. Not all are wine glasses. I have four hand-painted artist edition “bier-glas” from Germany’s Ritzenhoff. Then there is the quartet of Mint Julep glasses, acquired at the 1988 Kentucky Derby (won by the filly Winning Colors with Gary Stevens in the saddle), listing the previous 113 winners, that I break out for fun, frivolity and bourbon the first Saturday each May. And I treasure the six Martini glasses that were gifted and now hold a spot front and center on the bottom shelf of the cabinet, awaiting cocktails that are shaken, not stirred. But wine glasses dominate. Riedel Burgundy glasses, Bordeaux glasses, flutes for Champagne, a couple of Waterford “Mondavi series-Syrah” stems and a halfdozen “Black Rooster”engraved Chianti glasses that were made by Spiegelau. All are treasured. GOOD GLASS

With just a little bit of attention to detail, your wine experience can be greatly enhanced by using proper stemware, the word aficionados use to describe their glasses, for your wine. So what is “proper stemware?” It depends. If you have the space,

10

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

money and inclination then there are myriad options. Even if you just need a half-dozen glasses in your kitchen for everyday drinking, there are still a few things to consider. For example, there is school that insists, rightly so I believe, that shape matters. A great Burgundy or pinot noir is best served in a large, well-rounded bowl with a distinct narrowing at the top. This allows the floral aromas to be captured in the glass and collect, so when you put your nose in and inhale…nirvana. Bordeaux is better served in a taller, less rounded, though still tapered glass that directs the bolder wine to that spot on your palette that provides the most bang for the buck. And a Champagne flute provides the visual dimension of showcasing the bubbles as they rise to the top. That said, there are dozens of shapes of stemware made for wine geeks that may improve the actual taste of a glass of wine for most people. While you may not need them all, or even most, to enjoy a selection of different wines, if you can afford to hoard stemware, more power to you. But for the majority of wines, a glass with a bowl large enough to swirl wine without spilling, is slightly tapered at the top with a thinish rim, made from quality crystal or glass, and, most importantly, clean, will meet or exceed your expectations. Look for something in your budget and try to pay attention to the makers who specialize in the production fine wine glasses, like Riedel from Austria, and purchase their generic, everyday lines. (See Under the Influence) A JOYFUL NOISE

While I subscribe to the belief that specialty glasses work best with specific wines, 95 percent of the time I drink my wine out of five glasses (yes, there were once six) that I bought over a decade ago at the Simon Pierce glass making factory in Quechee, Vermont. These glasses were “seconds” from the store in the factory because they were deformed or irregular in some way. Today they are perhaps my most perfect possessions. With the general shape of a

O c tob e r 6 - O c tob e r 1 2 , 20 16

A bottle and the author’s favorite glass from Simon Pearce.

Bordeaux glass, they are thick and heavy. Each, because they were seconds, is unique or individual if you will. But what makes them so beloved is not just the feel in my hand or how they display my wines; it is the sound each makes when they are tapped together in a toast. An indescribable, joyful ring escapes from each glass as well wishes are

passed between friends. So what makes a perfect wine glass? Just like wine, it’s the one you like the best. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@ aol.com.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE RIEDEL OUVERTURE MAGNUM RED WINE GLASS While this space normally is reserved for recommending a wine, this week I will recommend a glass for the wines I have previously recommended. Riedel is the premier maker of fine wine glasses and decanters, and over the years they have perfected the art of marketing different glasses for different varieties of wine. This is their “beginner” glass. The one with training wheels, I suppose. Crystal with a large bowl and shorter stem, this glass feels good, provides a well-proportioned opening for your shnoz and clinks as you toast. Perfection. And you can get a set of eight for $60 on Amazon.

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

by AMANDA RAE

SHAME ON YOU

WHEN IT’S JUDGMENT DAY AT THE DINNER TABLE PERCHED AT THE SUSHI BAR, I wonder if we are the most annoying guests, ever. I’m on a long-overdue girl date, which we both almost canceled, citing sheer exhaustion. Shortly before we arrive at the restaurant, my friend admits she accidentally pigged out on family meal before leaving her shift (at a restaurant), so she doesn’t have much of an appetite. AMANDA Meanwhile, I’m RAE ravenous, so we agree to stick to the plan. But not before I scarf a spinach salad at home to take the edge off. I don’t want to work through an obscene amount of food at the restaurant while my friend sips miso soup. Once seated, we take a selfie — well, a half-dozen while trying to avoid shadows from harsh overhead lighting. Unsatisfied, we ask our server to snap one for us instead. Asking someone to pause in the middle of a job that requires rushing around a busy restaurant while keeping up an appearance of not rushing should factor into the tip, right? We feel the kitchen staff glaring at us as the camera flashes. Then there’s a simple matter of seating. One of us is vegetarian, and while I respect that deeply personal decision, I wouldn’t assume prime real estate at the chef’s counter of a seafood-centric restaurant if I was going to request a salad. I regret this thought immediately. No diner should be limited to sitting in a certain area of a restaurant based on food preferences, yet it’s easy to justify our misguided beliefs. Finally, at this particular spot I prefer to order multiple à la carte items instead of one main dish — all the better to taste a variety of flavors. I’m not sure that this behavior qualifies as fodder for staff to gripe about behind the scenes, but it does require a food runner to finagle multiple plates that may be ready at different times. When I remember who’s paying the bill, though, I recognize

12

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

that I shouldn’t feel bad about grazing through a meal instead of ordering one hearty entrée. “Don’t judge me,” I tell my pal before rattling off an obscure list of dinner cravings: One lobster taco. One miso-glazed eggplant appetizer. One order king crab sashimi. One specialty sushi roll with yellowtail and okra. One order tamago. I don’t want to be criticized for my motley array of foods, yet I make no secret about using the last item (neat squares of sweet-savory omelet bound with a strip of nori over sushi rice) as a Japanese restaurant litmus test. Tamago is almost like dessert, and let’s be honest: We probably won’t order anything from the pastry kitchen anyway. Women are the worst when it comes to food shaming. Sometimes it’s in the form of an obvious sideways glance when a lady orders steak-frites followed by bread pudding the size of a small handbag. Or it’s a comment about the “massive” amount of food on the plate: “Are you going to eat all that?” (My favorite response: “Yeah, I’m still starving after that 10-course tasting earlier. My metabolism must be out of whack!”) On the flip side, food policing can take shape as a sly remark about not eating enough: “That’s all you’re having?” or “Wow, I wish I could eat like that and stay so thin.” By definition, this kind of thinly veiled criticism is rooted in judgment. How do you know that the gal hasn’t been fasting all day to give herself “permission” to order a double cheeseburger? There’s no knowing what kind of private issues drive public behaviors, so shame on you for shaming someone about their consumption. Yoga instructors often tell us to “let go of judgment.” The highest spiritual practice, according to Swami Kripalu, the founder of Kripalu Yoga, is self-observation without judgment — noticing thoughts without categorizing them as “good” or “bad,” just letting them exist and float away. The same goes for food. Popular media is

O c tob e r 6 - O c tob e r 1 2 , 20 16

constantly telling us what we should or should not be eating. “7 ‘Healthy” Foods to Avoid.” “The 20 Most Weight-Loss Friendly Foods on the Planet.” “30 Foods You Should Never Eat After Age 30.” (Flavored yogurt, canned soup, and Pop-Tarts/ breakfast pastries top the list of the latter, in case you’re wondering.) I might argue that to eschew French croissants for life is to resign oneself to a mediocre existence. But there I go, judging those who abstain from flaky, buttery goodness as selfrighteous health snobs. Leave it to Amy Schumer to skewer these ridiculous behaviors. One segment on her sketch show, Inside Amy Schumer, comes to mind: Four females sit around a dining table, picking at their lunch and taking turns trying to one-up each other on how “bad” they are for how much they eat: “I was cyberbullying my niece on Instagram the other day and I literally ate 15 mini muffins the other day. I’m so bad!” “Yesterday, after I knelt on my gerbil to hear what sound it would make, I like wasn’t thinking, I ate a ball of mozzarella like it was a

peach…I’m so bad!” “I’m seriously bad: I can’t get out of bed without having a calzone… the other morning when that woman walked off the GW bridge, I didn’t do anything to help her. It’s because I was chewing my calzone. I’m so bad!” Having survived my twenties and learning that there are lists of foods that I should avoid now in my thirties is enough to inspire me to act like I don’t care about the opinions of others — “It’s none of my business what you think of me” is a helpful motto, according to noted psychology research professor Brené Brown. However, sometimes the evidence of a person’s deeprooted food insecurities — a comment from a dining companion or a funny glance from a stranger — throws you for a loop. Back at the sushi bar, where I wonder just how critically we were being judged, I have a realization: Perhaps I shouldn’t spend any more time thinking about any of this. Shoot — there’s that word again. amandaraewashere@gmail.com

DULCE CALIENTE

Surerte Blanco Tequlia St. Germain Lime Cucumber Jalapeno

During an impromptu “business meeting” at Jimmy’s Bodega, I ordered my standard — Jimmy’s Chile Paloma. But what my co-worker was sipping seemed even more enticing, and it was. The Dulce Caliente, with a perfect blend of tequila, lime and St. Germain (she ordered it light), is a smooth sipper with just the right bite of sweet, tart and tequila. The cucumber and jalapeno garnish were excellent additions, though next time I’ll throw in a few more jalapenos for an added kick. And there will be a next time ... The SOCIAL SIDE of TOWN

TWO NIGHTS WITH NEIL YOUNG

MAY SELBY

FOR A PERFORMER as legendary as Neil Young, who’s been in the studio and on the road since the ’60s, it’s a golden opportunity to see him live today in a place he’s never been. As in, never been on stage. Over the weekend, the godfather of grunge played in Telluride Town Park, backed by Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real. Outfitted in Western attire on stage in the San Juans, they closed resembled the cast of the “Hateful 8,” directed by Quentin Tarantino in that very town just a couple years back. In the days leading up to the shows, the extended forecast threatened rain, wind and generally unpleasant weather. By the time the weekend rolled on, however, the conditions could not have been more pleasant. Fall

colors also hit their peak over the weekend, framing the box canyon in gold. Both nights opened with solo performances by Mr. Young who was then joined by the band. On night one, they debuted four brand new songs, played for the first time ever. For the sophomore show, they played them again and even added another new track. On top of that were longtime favorites both nights, to which all sung along, including Heart of Gold, Rockin’ in the Free World, Cinnamon Girl (on Friday) and Sugar Mountain (Saturday) among many others. The overall vibe in town and at the shows was friendly, welcoming and positive, and it was certainly fun to run into friends from the Roaring Fork Valley

on the trails, in the saloons and at the concerts. A man of few spoken words, but many sung ones, Young closed out the weekend with a smile and a “Thank you, Colorado; Thank you, Telluride.” If I had the time, I’d be joining the bandwagon and head to Indio, Calif., this weekend and/or next for Desert Trip, or what I prefer to refer to as Oldchella. Tickets to see Neil, Bob Dyan, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters and the Who are still available here: www.deserttrip.com. RAG MAN’S LAST STAND

JOHN OUTTERBRIDGE’S ASPEN ART MUSEUM SHOW TO CLOSE OCT. 16 AT FIRST GLANCE, John Outterbridge’s work in “Rag Man” at the Aspen Art Museum seems a rough bricolage of junk and industrial materials — a sort of funky folk art of wood and hooks, string and steel nails, human hair and worn fabrics joined together to become more than the sum of their parts. Combined, they’re given life and many become human-like sculptures. But spend some time with the show — spanning 40-plus years of the Los Angeles-based artist’s career — and you’ll find a sharp commentary on the AfricanAmerican experience. Though the work dates back to 1970, it resonates powerfully and undeniably with today’s headlines and our Black Lives Matter moment. “Rag Man” opened in July in a basement gallery at the museum. The exhibition closes Oct. 16. A native of rural South Carolina, Outterbridge is the son of a “rag man” and junk collector, who piled found materials high in the yard and salvaged textiles for use as rags. The young Outterbridge was surrounded by art in this community, where everyday detritus was put to use for aesthetic purposes. “He learned at a very young age the value of re-instilling a life into an object and reusing it,” the Hammer Museum’s Anne Ellegood, who curated “Rag Man” for the Art + Practice in Los Angeles and brought it to Aspen, said during a walk-through of the show this summer. “You can see how that, of course, comes into his practice through time.” Rags, bags and the like take on figurative, human form and are imbued with spiritual symbolism — some are tacked on the wall on wooden, crucifix-like mounts. Outterbridge moved to Los Angeles in 1963, just two years before the Watts Rebellion and the riots that changed the city forever. Active in the civil rights struggle, Outterbridge fell in with the artists of the California Assemblage movement and their work became

inextricably linked to their activism and their fight for equality. “They believed in the power of art to implement change — that art can be an agent of social change,” explains Ellegood. Outterbridge looks to history in much of his work. The earliest piece in the show, “Case in Point,” is a piece of luggage that whispers of the Great Migration (and can’t help but remind today’s viewer of the ongoing global refugee crisis). The luggage tag reads, “Packages travel like people.” His “In Search of the Missing Mule” potently articulates the false promise of the U.S. government to give 40 acres and a mule to former slaves. The assemblage of steel and wood becomes a man, arms raised, with a hitching rope hanging from one arm and a ragged American flag draping from his side.

“This is his way of saying that the America that was promised is still being searched for,” says Ellegood. “Here is this figure that is out searching for the mule he never got and thinking, ‘What is America? What is American identity?’” American flags run as a motif throughout the show. Seeing those flags in Outterbridge’s work, in the context of ongoing protest of the national anthem by Colin Kaepernick and a growing legion of athletes, “Rag Man” couldn’t be more current. atravers@aspentimes.com

Chances are, if your phone isn’t in your hand right now, it’s in your pocket, purse, or placed nearby. One third of you will never turn it off and half will break it out to beat boredom in public, according to Pew Research Center. How to beat tech obsession? Try a digital detox to clear your mind, free your hands, and connect with the people and places around you. I WAS LOADING CAMPING GEAR into my car, moments before hitting the road, when the idea struck: What if I really, truly disconnected on this trip? It was Friday around noon, and I’d already set up an automated vacation responder indicating I wouldn’t be checking email until Monday morning. That was easy. I notified my parents and key friends that my cell phone would be off for about 24 hours beginning Saturday at 5 p.m., when I was set to arrive at White Sand Dunes National Monument in southwestern New Mexico for an equinox full-moon yoga retreat. But could I abandon my phone entirely? Did I really need to go full blackout to clear my mind, anyway? I found answers soon enough. Thinking it wise to print directions to my first stop in Santa Fe as backup to the oversized road atlas in my trunk — a relic from the 2011 road trip that landed me in Aspen, haven’t used it since — I headed back to my apartment. While walking behind two maintenance men, I began to text my plan to a pal, fingers tap, tap, tapping the screen rapidly. When I stopped to put keys in the lock and looked up, it hit me: I was at the wrong door, wrong floor. I’d blindly followed those guys to the second story instead of the third. At least I didn’t walk off a cliff playing Pokémon Go — that would have been really embarrassing.

DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY is king

of the modern world, and we are a nation obsessed. According to a 2015 study by Deloitte, the average American adult looks at his or her phone 46 times every day, up from 33 views in 2014. For teens and millennials, who grew up with tech at their fingertips, literally, that jumps to more than 150 checks per day. Media headlines suggest that the Internet, smartphones, cell phones, tablets, watches, apps, and games are ruining everything: our health, wellness, relationships, and cognitive function such as memory, attention span, critical thinking, and imagination. You or someone you know is suffering from weak sleep, vision problems, poor posture (docs agree unanimously that “tech neck” is an “epidemic”; tilting one’s head just 15 degrees forward adds an extra 15 pounds of pressure). One out of four car accidents are attributed to texting while driving, which may be a low estimate as it’s tough to prove. “It’s too much information, it’s too overwhelming, and it creates anxiety,” says Christina M. King, a licensed professional counselor in Aspen specializing in cognitive behavioral therapy. “It’s becoming a crutch for families. It teaches our children: If bored, they get a screen. I don’t think that’s healthy.” Enter the digital detox — a break from technology that might look like a screen-free Sunday or a getaway designed to get you off-grid for multiple days. (Screen Free Week is May 1-7, 2017; screenfree.org.) “I started feeling better on the eighth day — the fog lifted. My creativity, energy, and memory were coming back,” says Jess Davis, founder of Folk Rebellion, a lifestyle brand that hosts digital detox retreats in New York, California, and Canada to “promote awareness and wellness around our

digital usage.” While the White Sand Dunes retreat with Albuquerque-based Yoga Simple Sacred wasn’t categorized as digital detox, specifically, it made a fitting sequel to that time in August when I found myself out of cell service at Burning Man for eight glorious days. So disconnected we were that Labor Day came and went without a single remark.

PAPER DIRECTIONS in hand, I shut my phone off and hit the road. A few miles out of town, though, I realized: The address of my AirBnB rental was on my phone. Ditto for the list of hot spots to check out, per Facebook friends’ recommendations. Also I forgot a camera and a watch or a clock. Podcasts for the next 536 miles would be out, and I couldn’t Shazam that catchy song to add to a Spotify playlist later. I meant to be in touch with a friend-ofa-friend in Taos — impossible sans phone — and I was borderline hangry with a very specific craving. How could I Google “best sandwich Buena Vista” now? Screw all that, I thought. Without extreme planning, this journey would turn into a logistical

nightmare. My experiment was a bust, and I hadn’t even reached Twin Lakes yet. I took comfort in knowing I’m not alone. Studies suggest that technology separation anxiety — nomophobia — is a real phenomenon. “The tech check is tears, laughter, cheers,” says Davis, who collects all electronic devices from participants during a ceremony at the start of each Folk Rebellion retreat. “It’s important to set boundaries to our usage and to teach others to respect those boundaries, but we can’t do that without awareness and understanding why we’re using it and when.” In addition to outdoor adventure, Folk Rebellion trips include daily classes that “teach people tools on how to balance [tech] when they get back to the real world,” Davis says. “When you remove the devices and don’t have distractions, people’s brains start to slow down a little bit — we get back to the traditional, biological, analog pace that is meant to be. You have time to immerse yourself in your surroundings.” That’s the mission behind Aspen High School’s Experiential Education Program, which sends students to more than 30 weeklong excursions every September. Half of the courses take place in the wilderness, conveniently out of cell range. “I left my phone at home,” says AHS senior Kat Kowar, 17, who went SUPing on the Colorado River and camping at Rancho del Rio for six days last month. “It forced me to really listen and pay attention to the experiences of other people. The river guides who came with us, they’ve chosen a lifestyle where they’re not as electronically connected as everyone else — they’re out on the river, doing backcountry tours — which I think is pretty cool. Almost every one of them said, ‘I am most proud that I’ve been able to make a living out of recreation.’ That was really powerful.” (Similarly. the Aspen Sister Cities exchange program requires its eighth-grade participants to sign a nophone, no-computer contract that leaves parents liable for a $1,000 fine if they break it. Organizer Jill Sheeley says incidents are rare.)

RETURNING FROM NEW MEXICO, I enjoyed a daylong tech blackout — I even extended it a few hours. It was difficult to restrain myself from turning the phone back on, but it forced me to talk to people and I was more in tune with road magic along the way. What I didn’t miss: miscommunication via text message; feeling guilty for not picking up mom’s call; deleting emails to kill time; autocorrect fails; selfie shame; rage toward Siri’s inability to understand what I said. “We used to think nothing of standing in a post office line,” Davis says. “Now you’re alone with your thoughts, it’s a very foreign thing. We have information waterfalls going over us 24-7. It’s uncomfortable for people to just be.” Davis included. The first time she tried a digital detox, the former digital strategist panicked while trapped in a small talk. “I didn’t have my get-out-ofjail-free card, my cell phone, “Oh, I have this email” or whatever,” she says. (Folk Rebellion retreat participants receive a notebook the size of a smartphone to help fill the physical void.) “My main reason for touching my phone was because I was bored with somebody,” Davis continues. “How horrible is that to discover about yourself? Once we got onto something deep, we connected over what we had in common. Had I not had my cell phone taken away, I would not have made this friendship…Unplugging events or being offline for periods of time are important, just to wake people up.”

Amanda Rae turned her phone to airplane mode while writing this story and will do it again. amandaraewashere@gmail.com

SCREEN SAVERS “Going into the holiday season is the best time [to unplug], because you’re with the people you love most,” says Jess Davis, founder of lifestyle brand Folk Rebellion and a Wanderlust Snowmass speaker. Start a digital detox at home with her tips: —Try it on a Sunday. “No screens, no cloud anything, like Spotify — you’ll have to walk and find a newspaper.” —Shout your intention from the rooftops. Put it on Facebook and Twitter; tell your mom, boss, best friends. “When they don’t hear from you for 24, 48 hours, they’re not sending authorities to your house looking for you.” —Consider: What did I do with my hands before scrolling existed? Projects! Games! Reading books! “When your time is mostly spent on devices and you remove [those], add things in their place. I picked Battleship for my family: You have to sit across from each other, you’re using your hands. It’s a great face-to-face connection.” —Build an ‘Unplug Box.’ Make it a fun ritual. Set rules around the new home for your phone: Devices go here at night, during meals, etc. “We made ours from a shoebox decorated as a monster,” prompting Davis’ young son to remark, “Mom, time to feed the monster!” —Make it a game. At a restaurant, friends stack phones in the middle of the table; first person to touch a device picks up the check. “I got stuck with a $600 bill one time,” Davis says. “You learn very quickly.” —Buy an alarm clock. Replace the cell phone next to your head, already! Without the bright glow, you’ll enjoy more restful sleep and a less frazzled start to your day.

BOOK REVIEW

‘TODAY WILL BE DIFFERENT’ THE BRILLIANT but beleaguered Eleanor Flood romps about Seattle in “Today Will Be Different,” Aspen native Maria Semple’s delightful follow-up novel to the tour de force “Where’d You Go Bernadette.” Eleanor — with her bright son Timby in tow — is playing detective as she searches for her husband, a hand doctor who appears to have given her the slip. On the hunt, she has madcap run-ins with a poet/ Costco stock boy and a conceptual artist Eleanor clashed with during long-ago days as a TV animator while she also flashes back to her childhood in Aspen and recounts her estranged sister’s life in New Orleans. Local readers — especially anyone with memories of the late 1970s here — will eat up the Aspen color in this book. There are cameos from former mayor Bill Stirling and guitarist Bobby Mason, barbecue

page-turner of a literary comedy. Filled with uproarious incident and whip-smart observation from an undeniably loveable (and undeniably misanthropic) narrator, “Today Will Be Different” has unpredictable laughs on nearly every page and in each taut paragraph. Yet along with all the snickering, this is a book with heart. Somewhere amid all the slapstick set pieces, Semple crafts a resonant story about resentment, love, forgiveness and the ties that bind but sometimes break.
