FILM “12 YEARS A SLAVE” is being

called stylish, unforgettable, important — and difficult to watch, along the lines of “Schindler’s List” and “Amistad.” The film — directed by Steve McQueen, a Brit who has shown great willingness to get into uncomfortable territory — tells of Solomon Northrup, a black man in 19th- century America. Though Northrup (played by another Englishman, Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a citizen of New York State, he is kidnapped and forced to work on a New Orleans plantation. Though it is being depicted as unflinching in its account of slavery, the story, based in part on Northrup’s own diary, has elements of kindness, triumph and dignity. “12 Years a Slave,” co-starring Brad Pitt as a Canadian abolitionist and Michael Fassbender as a brutal slave owner, is showing in Aspen.

THE CHAIRS DESIGNED by Charles Eames in the mid20th century were considered a revolutionary product in home décor. In part, this was due not to Eames’ design, but to the contribution of a second party — Henry Miller, who manufactured the chairs in a streamlined, mass-production fashion. A new exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum brings a third party into the picture: artist Holt Quentel, who added her own elements to the chairs — fabric coverings, spray paint, a Grateful Dead sticker — and exhibited 21 of them in a 1990 gallery show. The chairs are now gathered for Quentel’s first solo museum presentation, which touches on the idea of design, commodity and modernism.

We still have questions, 50 years later ASSUMING YOU were born in 1958 or earlier, you should be able to answer the following question: Where were you the moment you heard that President John F. Kennedy had been shot while being driven in a motorcade around Dallas, Texas? It’s a question that a lot of people have been asking themselves this week and for some time before this week, as we sneak up on the 50th anniversary of that nation-shattering moment, which came at 12:30 p.m. (Central Standard Time) on Friday, Nov. 22, 1963. If you were born after 1958, of course, you would have been 4 years old or younger and wouldn’t have cared much where you were, as long as mummy was nearby and dinner was soon to be on the table. Myself, I was 12, entering that dangerous period of human existence known as puberty, so I might correctly be accused of not knowing exactly where I was at any given point in time, day or night, that year or the ensuing three or four years. But, pubescent hallucinations aside, I do recall exactly where I was on that day. I was in school, in a particular classroom on the left side of the second-floor hallway of the newest section of a historic school building, Franklin Elementary School in Madison, Wis. I can remember the desk I sat in, one place back from the front, two rows from the window. I was in seventh-grade French class, taught by Mrs. Doré, on whom I had a massive crush my last year at Franklin. What I clearly recall from the day of the shooting is a lot of weeping and stunned faces out in the hallway. Lunch break was over, and Mrs. Doré had just walked out of the room with a concerned look on her face. The class held its collective breath, knowing something big was up. She came back in a few minutes later, drying her eyes and obviously freaked out (OK, I wouldn’t learn that phrase until a little later in life, but that’s how she looked). She told us that the President had been shot, that school had been canceled and that school buses would be arriving soon to

carry us home. I remember feeling confused as I vacillated between glee at getting a free afternoon just before the weekend, and a sense that this was something too serious for us to treat lightly. I remember that some in the class managed to get out a quick cheer at being released, more of a squeak, really, before being grimly shushed into silence. I don’t remember the bus ride home. I don’t remember whether our gorgeous 15-year-old babysitter, Donna Wind, was there to greet us, or whether our parents had come home early from work in keeping with the national sense of shock. I do remember watching television for much of that afternoon, as they declared the President dead and the shockwaves from the event grew deeper and stronger all across the U.S. I remember watching on TV two days later as the accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was shot to death himself by the now notorious hood and nightclub owner Jack Ruby, in the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters. And I remember as I grew older that I couldn’t quite believe the conclusions of the Warren Report, that Oswald and Ruby both acted entirely, crazily alone. Which means I remain one of the 61 percent of the American people who still think something else went on that fateful day, despite our government’s elaborate and determined efforts to convince us otherwise. I believe we, as a nation, ignored the fact that a coup d’etat had taken place, and that we would never know the names of those behind this act. I believe there are too many unanswered questions, deliberately left unasked by a government that wanted this episode to fade away in our collective memories so that business as usual could go on. At this point a lot of us, the unbelievers in the official Kennedy assassination mythology, have died off. But still, more than half of this country is convinced we were lied to about who shot JFK and why. And we have a nagging suspicion that the truth, if it gets out, will mean trouble of a kind we’ve never known before.

Weathered siding: the deep-grained material that inspired Aspen’s barnwood period.

TIMBER: THE BACKSTORY ON BARNWOOD YOU MAY LIVE in a house or condo in which an interior wall or the kitchen cabinets are covered with barnwood. Just as granite countertops will someday date millennial architecture, the texture of barnwood dates a “1970s” interior. When I was a child, locally timbered wood overlaid ancient barns, sheds and unoccupied houses. Weathering produced an abundant supply of rough planks for building projects; however, aluminum siding, tongue-and-groove knotty pine, and 4-foot by 8-foot sheets of paneling fell into fashion as the decorative surfaces of choice. Grainy, cracked and fadedto-gray, the unappreciated features of barnwood were destined for the fireplace — or the dump. Had we only known. The barnwood period of the 1970s coincided with a resurgent popularity of stained glass. As the twists and turns of interior décor have continuously held sway over Aspen, suddenly every home had to have at least one stained glass window and a barnwood wall. For Aspen’s Victorian houses, a “stained glass window” had meant a plain glass rectangle surrounded by single-color, 5-inch

square panes, and barnwood had somehow disappeared with the barns: there was scant local supply of either material. The salvaged houses of Denver yielded rare, antique stained glass

their lifetime under the Colorado sun left them defiant of further warping and shrinkage, the curses of newly felled timber imported from the rainforests of Oregon. To satisfy the barnwood demand,

As the venerable sheds of Aspen accrued value, astute contractors corralled the wood. Although the boards were cracked and pierced by nail holes,

“new” wood could be had. You could buy local rough-sawn pine from area mills and abandon it outside for a couple of seasons, but it would take decades to create the inimitable grain of more aged planks. By now, it is hard to distinguish, just by

looking, Aspen’s original Victorians of the 19th-century from later reproductions. Spotting authentic, local barnwood presents a similar challenge: you would know (as do a few Aspen locals) only if you had been there when it was salvaged and installed. The barnwood craze was short lived as mountain architecture shifted toward more commercially available, rough-sawn, textured, channel-lap cedar. However, if your barnwood tempts you to replace it with an “in” material, don’t. Barnwood is on a comeback; I can feel it in my fingertips. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. GIVING THANKS

LOCAL WINE EXPERTS SHARE THEIR PICKS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY FEAST IT IS THE BEST of all the holidays. Thanksgiving gives us a chance to reflect on our good fortune, get together with family and friends, and chow down on the foods of the season. It also gives us an excuse to get some great juice. Rather than give my picks for wines to pair with your Turkey Day repasts, for the next couple of weeks I thought we would ask the experts, the wine guys at some of our Valley’s outstanding wine shops, to make some suggestions for you. KELLY J. HAYES We’ll start downvalley and end up at the Carl’s wine sale in town this week. Next week we’ll get some selections from other shops, all of which will be open on Thanksgiving Day, for your last-minute shopping. I asked each pro to select two whites and two reds. And because this is the quintessential American holiday, I stipulated that the bottles had to be American. That brought a bit of groaning from the boys, but they got over it. ONE OF MY earliest cooking memories is of baking blueberry pie with my sweet mother, though the process began long before we took to the kitchen. First we’d ascend Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts, where wild blueberries run rampant in late August. It could have been the hottest day of summer, but those rocky fields were always cool and AMANDA breezy up at 3,491 feet, RAE where I hoped to spy a hang glider launch off a cliff and drift away over the valley’s bright-green broccoli trees. I was small enough that I didn’t have to stoop far to pluck berries from the bushes — a tiny blessing, because it seemed to take forever to fill my basket. Back at home and balanced on a wooden stepstool carved with my name, I cut ice-cold butter into flour with grandma’s steel pastry blender, and helped mom weave a lattice top and crimp the crust. Flour flew, but I was focused — rare for my usual impish self. Come to think of it, my favorite part wasn’t even eating the finished pie, but nibbling on the wonky scraps of extra dough we’d bake on a cookie sheet, hot from the oven. To this day, the sight or scent of blueberry pie time-warps me back to those carefree summers: climbing trees, riding bikes and helping mom bake pie with blueberries we picked that morning. Pie is a classic comfort, edible Americana — and almost everyone has a fond memory about it. “That’s my nostalgia: the New England pork pie we’d have at Christmas,” says Heather Lujan, a New Hampshire native and undisputed queen of pie in the Roaring Fork Valley. “We couldn’t wait to get home from church to

have that pork pie, with salt pork and stewed tomatoes and onions and potatoes. It was so good. So good!” As owner of Heather’s Savory Pies & Tapas Bar, a cozy eatery that opened on Midland Avenue in Basalt during the summer of 2012, Lujan is considering sharing her Polish-French family’s recipe this holiday season with her loyal customers. She’s already their goto gal for pies sweet and savory: pecan pie, mince pie, chicken pot pie, ropa vieja Cuban stew, pulled pork-tamale, and lamb-eggplant pies. She bakes Palisade peach pie, blueberry pie, Key lime, bananacream, and strawberry-rhubarb pie. She sculpts pie to order, and sells it by the slice. And boy, do Basaltines love pie. “It was like a soup-kitchen: there was a line for pie,” says Lujan of her early days running Heather’s Mayberry Café from inside the Phillips 66 gas station in the center of town. “I had Friday Pie Day; that’s where my chicken pot pie came to light.” For Thanksgiving, Lujan is assembling dozens of 10-inch deepdish turkey pot pies ($45) to takeand-bake, “for people who don’t have families or don’t want to do a big turkey.” She’ll also be making her bestselling pumpkin-maple pie, and taking special orders for all varieties a week in advance. Because, really, what is Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie? “It’s not,” quips Zac Young, pastry chef David Burke Kitchen in New York City, who will oversee the dessert program at the Aspen outpost set to open in February. (Young’s 92-year-old grandmother still makes — and closely guards her recipe for — pumpkin pie, his “favorite food in the whole world.”) “For me, it is more important than the turkey,” Young says. “I’d rather have a ham.”

PIE IN THE SKY “In this altitude, for every teaspoon of baking powder (in a recipe), I take out a quarter teaspoon,” says Heather Lujan of Heather’s Savory Pies & Tapas Bar in Basalt. “I use lemon juice in my crust, and egg yolks, shortening, and butter. Other than that, it’s pretty much trial and error.” For the home cook seeking to turn out flaky pie crust, Lujan recommends using a food processor to cut the butter into flour. “Just don’t beat it to death,” she cautions. “Pulse until crumbly.”

DAVID BURKE KITCHEN APPLE PIE “Booze and desserts go hand in hand for me,” says David Burke Kitchen pastry chef Zac Young. In his cheddar-topped, savory spin on classic apple pie, Young uses fast-evaporating vodka for an ultra flaky crust and sauces the filling with bourbon. “You can’t just go pouring a half-pint of bourbon into your pie — moderation is key,” he says. “Baking is science.”

2 Tbsp. sugar Big pinch of salt 1. Cut butter into cubes. 2. Using your fingers, blend butter into flour, sugar and salt until pea-size granules form. 3. Mix in vodka and soda water. 4. Divide dough into 2 disks and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.

BOURBON APPLE FILLING 12 Mutsu apples, cored, quartered and cut into 3-inch slices (Granny Smith apples may be substituted) Zest and juice of 2 lemons

8 ounces unsalted butter 10 ounces dark brown sugar 2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon Big pinch of salt 1/3 cup bourbon ¼ cup all-purpose flour Block aged cheddar, at least 2 ounces 1. Toss apples with lemon zest and juice. 2. In a large saucepan, cook butter until brown and nutty. Add apples and stir. 3. Add remaining ingredients to saucepan and cook until the apples are al dente. Don’t overcook. 4. Pour filling onto a sheet

plan and let cool to at least room temperature. 5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 6. Roll one disk of dough into a 16-inch circle. 7. Line a deep-fluted removable-bottom tart pan with dough. Trim dough flush with top. Fill with apple mixture. 8. Roll second disk of dough into a 14-inch by 20-inch rectangle. Cut into 1-inch strips. Make lattice on top of the pie. 9. Bake pie for one hour. 10. Remove pie from oven. Grate cheddar over top. Bake for 10 minutes more, until cheese is golden brown.

Ice 2 ounces bourbon 1 ounce coffee liqueur Root beer Fill an 8-ounce drinking glass with ice. Add the bourbon and coffee liqueur. Stir, then slowly pour in enough root beer to top off the glass. Gently stir again.

I make only one change: Easy to make, comforting to drink. Because while I’m looking for bright and fruity in the heat of summer, at Thanksgiving and Christmas and the onslaught of holiday gatherings in between, I want whatever is in my cup to put me at ease, leave me feeling warm and play nicely with whatever food is on the table. But I’m not willing to work all that hard for it. Hence the “easy to make” part never changes, no matter what the season. For cold weather holidays, I gravitate to bourbon. It has all the qualities I’m looking for — warming, festive, affordable and compatible. And because of those qualities, you don’t need to do much to it to create a terrific cocktail you’ll want to nurse your way through during the party. And while the root beer in the Rooted and Brewed cocktail may seem unusual, it is quite delicious and does not impart an overly sweet flavor. LOVING CUP CRAIG FULMER OF ROCK CANYON COFFEE ROASTERS IS ON A MISSION TO BANISH BURNED, BITTER BEANS, FIVE POUNDS AT A TIME by AMANDA RAE

IF WILLY WONKA had churned out coffee beans instead of chocolate confections, he might have sounded like Craig Fulmer does when describing the wildly distinct nuances of each varietal. Early one morning in the laboratory of his fledgling Rock Canyon Coffee Roasters — a garage attached to the bungalow he shares with his wife, Heidi Johnson, off a dirt road somewhere between Basalt and Carbondale — Fulmer pats a pile of bulging burlap sacks. Each contains about 100 pounds of seemingly identical, pea-sized, pale-green coffee beans. What a visitor can’t see, however, is the wondrous world of aromas and flavors that can only be

extracted by someone like Fulmer, a hobbyist coffee roaster turned dreamer of dreams. “The Guatemalan, a few minutes into the roast, you could swear someone was cooking bacon,” says the 43-year old former financial planner and software developer in a soft, slightly excited tone. “The Ethiopian smells like someone’s baking blueberry muffins when it’s roasting. Some have beautiful floral aromas, grapefruit, orange. Once in a while you’ll get a bag with really nice chocolate, like s’mores. And most all beans go through a woody, grassy phase, (as if ) the farmer next door is cutting hay. That’s part of the fun: you take this agricultural product, put your own spin on how to apply heat over time, and go from graham crackers to flowers.” Fulmer launched Rock Canyon Coffee — with little more than a half-pound tabletop roaster — in April 2012, shortly after the Washington natives relocated to Colorado after 10 years in Boston. “The first day I had to roast 10 pounds, I

was screwed,” Fulmer says with an easy laugh. He upgraded to a custom-built, state-of-the-art Diedrich Manufacturing 5-pound commercial batch roaster this past March; completed an advanced training course at the factory in Idaho; and, following a summer of serious networking at area farmers’ markets and online, has secured a steady following of retail and wholesale customers who are just as passionate as he is about where their coffee comes from and how it’s handled. Johnson helps spread the gospel of Rock Canyon Coffee during tastings at the Aspen Emporium and Flying Circus’ monthly open houses in Aspen and Basalt and soon the El Jebel Winter Market; thanks to the couple’s caffeinated energy, the beans are featured in a slew of area venues, including the Hyatt Grand Aspen, which just awarded Rock Canyon the contract to supply 200 pounds of coffee per month. Anyone can buy a bag of green coffee beans and attempt to roast them, be it in the oven, on the stovetop in an iron skillet or wok, or in a hot-air popcorn

popper, but results can be wildly unpredictable. Fulmer, an espresso fiend since college, started with the latter, “reading on websites and just incinerating the bean, doing nothing but turning it into charcoal.” He burned through five conical appliances before Johnson, perhaps out of pity but maybe partly out of exasperation, bought him the half-pound roaster for his birthday one year. “Through an enormous amount of error and trial,” Fulmer says, “you learn what not to do.” A few factors contribute to the quality of professionally roasted, boutique coffee beans such as Rock Canyon’s. First are country of origin and source; through a Seattle importer, Fulmer buys organic, rainforest-certified, and direct-trade beans as often as possible, sidestepping fair-trade auctions so that farmers in Third World countries get a bigger slice of the global price. Storage and time from shipment to shelf factor in as well; Rock Canyon roasts and ships on the same day. But what really sets brands apart is the cook: how much heat is used and when, for how long,

and what kind. Fulmer’s 5-pound batch roaster uses conductive heat: instead of an open flame, beans tumble within a rotating horizontal chamber of quarterinch carbon steel, warmed from the outside by infrared burners. Because of the technology’s even temperature distribution and fuel efficiency, these types of roasters are preferred by countless other companies around the world. The critical variable, then, is the man behind the machine. “Get four bags of beans,” Fulmer says, “bring them to Ink!, Defiant, Back Alley and me, and you’ll get four different espressos. They’ll all be darn good, but you’ll have a preference as to which one you buy. We’re different people; we interpret flavors and smells differently.” Fulmer at work resembles a chemist at times, a DJ at others. Throughout each roast cycle — which typically lasts between 13 and 16 minutes, depending on the style achieved (light, medium, dark, espresso) — Fulmer is constantly consulting handwritten notes and adjusting knobs that direct gas pressure, drum speed,

and airflow. Every 30 seconds, Fulmer takes a temperature reading; at the same time, he twists a small chamber extending into the spinning roaster to capture and remove a thimbleful of beans, which he brings to his nose. Through smell — of a greenhouse, graham crackers, caramel — and by listening, Fulmer can determine where beans are at in the cycle. “I add gentle heat to the beginning of the roast, make sure the waters and sugars as well as the chemical compounds in the bean have a chance to heat up, really develop,” he says. “At a certain point, water bursts out of the bean as steam, and you hear the ‘first crack,’ the starting point for the caramelizing of the sugars. That’s the critical point in the roast. If we ever talk about our roast profiles with any other roaster, that’s where we keep our secrets, so to speak.” It’s also where the roast can go wrong. During an educational coffee-tasting brunch hosted by M&M Catering & Cooking School to celebrate its new partnership with Rock Canyon Coffee, Fulmer presents Sumatra, a robust coffee that diners call out as tasting of dark chocolate and cinnamon — characteristics similar to those that wafted through

Fulmer’s garage. “I roasted it into the realm of a dark roast, but I stopped before I burned it,” Fulmer says to the crowd. “There’s a point when the cell structure, the walls, begin to burn, break down. That’s when you get jet-black, oily beans, like you get at your local global roaster shop.” He takes a sip of the Sumatra. “As you swallow the coffee, what’s left in your mouth are the oils in the coffee itself. If you don’t burn those, you’re left with a nice pleasant, buttery flavor in your mouth.” Burn those oils, and beans can quickly turn rancid during storage. “One of the things I like about Craig is that he’s very conscious of not stretching the roast,” says Wade Newsom, owner of The Blend Coffee Company in Carbondale, which features Rock Canyon Coffee on its pour-over bar. “It’s important to find that sweet spot, where you are getting the most flavor out of the bean. When the roast gets stretched, it can take on burned, smoky characteristics. He will throw out

batches of coffee if they don’t meet his standards. The guy is super passionate.” Fulmer hopes to share that passion with the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond. “I think coffee is a comfort food,” he says, back in his kitchen over Americano. “The smell of coffee triggers good memories for people. Having a cup of coffee is also a community building activity: we’re sitting here, chatting about how we came to be, over a cup of coffee.” “In fact, Craig and I first met, 16 years ago, over a cup of coffee,” Johnson chimes in. She notes that the ritual of making and enjoying coffee, not unlike a Japanese tea ceremony, is Rock Canyon’s reason for being.. “There’s a feeling and emotion

behind why people choose to drink our coffee, versus a Nescafé or Keurig drinker who just wants caffeine,” she says. “It’s this backward hippie movement. A pour-over takes time and effort — the Chemex’s heyday was 1973!” What’s more, Fulmer cites what he believes to be a growing consumer backlash against global chains such as Starbucks, Seattle’s Best and Peet’s.

WAKE-UP CALL “Part of my mission is education,” says Craig Fulmer of Rock Canyon Coffee Roasters. Here are a few of his top tips on brewing, storing, and enjoying his small-batch beans. • DON’T store coffee in the freezer! Instead, place in an airtight container and keep out of sunlight, on a kitchen counter or in a cupboard. • DO pre-rinse paper filters. Dust and residues can taint the flavor of your cuppa. Those using automated machines can do this in advance; allow filter to dry before grounds are added. • DO filter your water. “Coffee is only going to be as good as the water you brew,” says Fulmer, who uses a Brita filter at home. • DO let coffee “bloom” when using French press or pour-over methods. Wet grounds with a splash of water and watch ‘em bubble: froth-created by carbon dioxide--indicates freshness. Wait a minute before adding remaining water. • DON’T drink coffee when it’s piping hot. “A fresh Americano with water straight out of a boiler is too hot to showcase the flavors,” Fulmer says. Scorched taste buds ain’t pleasant, either. • DO clean your machine every month. Coffee oils in crevices attract dust particles, and water mineral buildup can clog and damage coffeemakers over time. Add a tablespoon of citric acid — found in the canning aisle of the grocery store — to warm water and allow components to soak, preferably overnight. Rinse thoroughly before the next brew cycle. • DO clean coffee storage containers between uses, to eliminate residual oils that can turn rancid over time. • DON’T be afraid to experiment. “You can run any coffee through an espresso machine,” Fulmer says, as long as it’s finely ground. “I’ve got a customer who likes the tart, tangy, citrusy flavors of medium roasts as espresso. My Sumatra, a dark roast, makes great espresso. Barundi medium roast: beautiful espresso.”

“People finally understand it’s no longer boutique coffee,” Fulmer says. “It’s a publicly traded, multinational corporation that will, at all costs, rape the supply chain to make a buck and serve stockholders. That’s not what I’m about.” Instead, he’s focused on craftsmanship. And just as home cooks might want to meet the farmers who grow their food,

coffee drinkers relish a similar relationship with their roaster. “You make a phone call, and four hours later you have a warm package of coffee — how much fresher can you get?” says Andreas Fischbacher, chef-owner of Allegria in Carbondale and one of Rock Canyon’s first commercial espresso customers. “Craig is absolutely a coffee guru. I’ve had a lot of education in the last year, and I really do like the product: it’s flavorful, rich coffee.” Wonka similarities abound: the charmingly eccentric, analytical Fulmer toils in a secretive, somewhat solitary profession. “It’s not a spectator sport,” Fulmer admits. “I had to train my landlord to leave me alone when I’m roasting because I have 5 pounds of product that could go bad if I miss something.” He seems to savor this time, tweaking batches in his garage and sharing coffee with neighbors before computerized roasters, warehouses and staffers bound by nondisclosure agreements are involved. Yet Fulmer hints to bigger goals. “Apple Computer started in a garage,” he says. “Why not Rock Canyon Coffee?” Amanda Rae and Chemex Coffeemakers share a birthplace: Pittsfield, Mass.

SKICO GETS HIP

HI-FI CONCERT SERIES UPS THE OFF-SLOPE OFFERINGS came as a surprise to visitors, and probably locals as well — the Aspen Skiing Co. bringing in hard rock and hip-hop. But over time, the concerts have helped give the Skico and the town a genuine claim as an attraction for younger, hipper crowds. “It’s brought another dimension, an added component to the ski/ snowboard experience,” he said. “For us, the Hi-Fi concerts have brought another energy, an excitement. The trio of Ben Eberdt, Gray Smith and Mike Kelly began life as Boulder students with a thing for jam bands and the harder sounds of Led Zeppelin. They have since moved locations, trading Boulder for Brooklyn, and evolved in sound, transforming into an electronic dance act, though still with a rock element in the mix. When Savoy has come through Colorado lately, their performances have been on the grand stage of Red Rocks (along with the occasional stop at Aspen’s Belly Up).

Talk about roots reggae — Black Uhuru’s history goes back to the source, the early ’70s in Kingston, Jamaica. The group, still with founding member Duckie Simpson, has the distinction of winning the first Grammy for Reggae Album of the Year, for their 1984 recording, “Anthem.” Another album, 1989’s “Red,” was named one of the 100 Best Albums of the ’80s by Rolling Stone. And they have toured with the Rolling Stones — the band, that is.

‘GODFORSAKEN IDAHO: STORIES’ SHAWN VESTAL sets the stories in his focused yet far-reaching debut collection among regular Mormon folks who live in Idaho, touching on their lives in the past, the present and even the afterworld. Most of his characters have fallen away from their faith or are struggling with doubts, and Vestal, a columnist for Spokane’s SpokesmanReview, skillfully mixes those serious subjects with dry humor. In one story, the narrator meets his ex-wife in the afterlife. “Are the kids all right?” he asks her. “You got used to not knowing that,” she replies. “Come on,” the narrator says, “I’ve been dead.” In another story, a man travels with his girlfriend to Rupert, Idaho, to visit her Mormon parents. There, they find “a hand-painted sign, done up with curlicues: FAMILIES ARE FOREVER! Which sounded like a threat.” Although Vestal can also craft

compelling stories in the vein of straightforward realism — “About as Fast as This Car Will Go,” for example, follows a young man’s descent into criminality under the guidance of his ex-con father — his stories soar when he frees them from the normal cosmic rules. In “The First Several Hundred Years Following My Death,” there’s not much for the deceased to do but relive their own lives. “Now that it’s gone, your life is the only thing you have left. Ransack it, top to bottom. Find whatever you can in there, because it’s all there is.” This story starts out comical but becomes increasingly moving and melancholy as the narrator tries to reconnect with people from his past.
