POPULAR MUSIC ROCK LEGEND Chris

Cornell is capping off a massive 2016 with a stint here in Aspen. The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman is playing two solo shows at Belly Up Aspen over the holidays. His Dec. 23 performance is already sold out but, at press time, there were still tickets available for his Dec. 27 encore. The singer is coming off of a fall during which he reunited with Temple of the Dog for a big arena tour and is hard at work on a new Soundgarden album that’s due out in 2017. Cornell’s past Belly Up shows have been intimate affairs that showcase his solo material from his five solo albums like 2009’s “Scream” and, most recently, last year’s “Higher Truth.” Produced by Brendan O’Brien — of Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Neil Young fame — was inspired by the stark arrangements of musicians like Nick Drake, Daniel Johnston and White Albumera Beatles. His Belly Up performance is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Tickets are $166 for general admission and $476 for reserved seats, available at the Belly Up box office and www.bellyupaspen.com. One dollar from each ticket sold will support the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, which is currently raising funds and partnering with charitable organizations to mobilize support for children facing problems including homelessness, poverty, abuse and neglect.

Chris Cornell will play Belly Up on Dec. 23 and 27.

“ONE THOUSAND BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS PRESENTS,” proclaimed an advertisement in the Rocky Mountain Sun on December 22, 1888. “Only three days remain before Christmas, and we wish to say a farewell word to all. To those who have not already bought their holiday gifts we invite their attention to our store in the Court House block on Cooper avenue. They will be surprised to see the large variety of very pretty and very choice articles most suitable for presents. All selections will be set aside and delivered on Christmas Eve, or at any time desired. Every article in the house marked in plain figures. By coming early you will have opportunity to make a thorough examination of our large stock and secure to yourselves greater satisfaction in your final selection of goods. GEAR of the WEEK

by STEPHEN REGENOLD

WEAR IT: PATAGONIA NANO-AIR LIGHT HOODY PATAGONIA PRESENTED its original Nano-Air line as an “insulation breakthrough” back in 2014. This year, the company ships a more-breathable version of its “active insulation” top. Wind cuts right through the Nano-Air Light Hoody. But it’s made to work that way, a soft outer fabric with permeable insulation inside. The design allows a body to breathe, quickly drying to expel moisture during exertion. But when you stop moving and get out of the wind, or add a shell jacket over it, the Nano-Air Light traps copious heat. Patagonia calls the half-zip jacket an “extended-range mid-layer.” It’s made to be worn alone over a base layer, or as a mid-layer under a shell as part of a winter kit. As of a couple years, it’s a new category of jacket, often called “active insulated.” Though not a niche Patagonia invented, the company has embraced the breathable-but-warm genre with a fervor. The company touts the NanoAir Light as having a “breathable warmth” quality, meaning it can keep you warm when stationary but will mitigate sweat and body heat if you’re going aerobic on the snow. I tested it out through a range of temps. Overall, the Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody ($249) and its accompanying Nano-Air Light Pants ($149) work well for winter days where you’re on the move. In my use, the new NanoAir Light was undeniably more breathable than similar mid-weight jackets I own. If I was moving hard, the hoody worked with a single base layer underneath in temps of 15 degrees and lower. The design is minimal. There’s only one pocket, a zip-up on the chest. When gloveless on abovefreezing days, I often wished there was a place to put my hands. Its hood fit my head nicely. However, it has no adjustments. Try it on to see how your noggin jibes. It fits under or over a helmet, depending on the hard-hat size. The pull-over design is not my favorite. It’s harder to take off and

GET IT

$249 www.patagonia.com

put on. But the half-length zipper is nice once you’re moving — with no hand pockets and no zipper to the waist backpacks and climbing harnesses are not encumbered. Put the Nano pants and top on and leave them there; these are allday pieces. I’d sleep in them, too, as the materials are all soft, quiet, and would add nice warmth in a sleeping bag. If you’re standing around, look elsewhere. This jacket is not a replacement for your (much less breathable) down puffy coat. The Patagonia pieces require a shell jacket in bad weather. Further, this is a bad choice for downhill skiing and snowboarding, as well as most winter biking, where constant wind from movement and the pull of gravity make the hoody and pants too cold. It will work in these situations as a mid-layer though, under a shell jacket. The face fabric, a nylon ripstop with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish, works in snow and even light precipitation. Water runs off the soft fabric more than anticipated. It’s not a waterproof jacket, though. You need to bring a Gore-Tex shell or the equivalent to

layer on top if you’re out in weather all day. At $249, the Nano-Air Light Hoody is fairly priced in the scheme of tech jackets made for the outdoors. If you spend winter moving fast and getting sweaty while ski-touring, climbing, or snowshoeing you’ll reach for this jacket day after day.

Overall, I like Patagonia’s take on the “active insulated” category and find the kit on my body many days this winter already while moving fast (and sweaty) across the snow.

Stephen Regenold writes about outdoors gear at www.gearjunkie.com.

WINEINK

ARCANUM: BORDEAUX BLENDS IN TUSCANY “WELL I GUESS Jess had a pretty big thumb,” said winemaker Lawrence Cronin when I expressed my amazement at the curved rows of vines that seemed to wrap and embrace the tasting room at the Tenuta di Arceno estate in Tuscany. He was, of course, referring to the remarkable thumbprint left on the landscape KELLY J. by the late wine HAYES entrepreneur Jess Stonestreet Jackson who, in his final years, nurtured this historic property a few kilometers from Sienna, just below the tiny village of San Gusmè. When Jess first saw the 1,000-hectare (2,500 acre) property in the early 1990s he instructed that the new vines should be planted in undulating curves rather than simple rows. The result is a visual tableau that speaks to the sensuality of both the terroir and the wines that are produced under the Tenuta di Arceno and Arcanum labels. The whimsical, curved rows have become a signature of the winery and today grace the label of the Tenuta Di Arceno wines. It is an example of how Jackson, one of the most significant figures in the modern history of wine (Kendall-Jackson and Jackson Family Wines), had his finger firmly on the pulse beat of how to make, market and share fine wines from around the globe. BEYOND CHIANTI

While Castelnuovo Berardenga, the commune where the Tenuta di Arceno vineyards are located, is home to some of the finest sangiovese vines in Chianti Classico, Jackson also thought the hills and soils would be ideal for cradling the “international,” or Bordeaux, varietals that both he and Pierre Seillan (his Bordeaux winemaker who is perhaps best known in America for his Sonoma-grown Vérité blends) were so passionate about. So with customary audacity, the pair planted cabernet franc,

12

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

cabernet sauvignon and merlot on these Tuscan hillsides. “When Jess first tasted the cab franc grown here, he said, ‘That’s World Series!’” Cronin remembered, and Arcanum was born. Today, the Italian outpost of Jackson Family Wines makes three Bordeaux style wines under the Arcanum brand. Earlier this month, Wine Spectator named the 2012 Arcanum Toscana “Il Fauno” as one of its top 100 wines of the year, ranking it at number 19 on the prestigious list. Arcanum, in the lexicon of alchemists, can be defined as “elixir,” and these wines meet that definition precisely. The 2012 “Il Fauno” is a blend led by 48 percent merlot with near equal weights of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, making a balanced wine that is complex and elegant, and as good a $30 wine as you’ll find on the planet. The Spectator tout will no doubt make it harder to track down, but seek out the “Il Fauno” for a wine that can take you on a trip to Tuscany and Bordeaux in a single glass. While bold in style there was a softness on the palette and a finesse to the “Il Fauno.” Cronin said laughingly of his boss, the wine master Seillan, “Pierre is not a delicate guy,” noting with a grin that the rugby-loving winemaker can be a bit rough around the edges. “But he has the ability to make delicate wines.” Perhaps this wine reflects that more nuanced side of both men. Valadorna, the second wine, is also a Right Bank-style blend dominated by merlot sourced from some the cooler blocks of the Tenuta Di Arceno estate, which can be stiflingly warm in the summer months. These wines are dark in the glass and concentrated on the palate. They are also earthy with a little chew to the tannins, not unlike Napa Valley merlot, and they should prove age-worthy. But the gem of the collection, the flagship, or as the Jackson Family likes to say, “the pinnacle of the estate’s offerings,” is the wine dubbed as Arcanum.

D e c e m b e r 22 - D e c e m b e r 2 8, 20 16

San Gusme is home to the Tenuta di Arceno wine estate owned by Jackson Family Wines.

This is a wine that is led by the cabernet franc that Jess Jackson so revered. While cabernet franc is sometimes knocked as being a bit “green,” or herbal, this blend is enhanced by that characteristic. “Jess was all about balance,” Cronin explained. “A wine can be fruity, have minerality or be herbal. But if it has all three components in balance, it can be an 11 on a 10 scale.” The three wines of the Arcanum collection represent a bold step by an American-based wine venture to marry the soils, grapes and know how of diverse people and regions to make wines unlike any that have ever existed before. It is only in this day and age that we have the resources and technology to bring global elements together to produce wines like these. Ancient lands and new ideas. It’s a recipe for a fine elixir. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-to-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE 2010 STRADA AL SASSO CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA Call me a traditionalist, but during my visit to taste at Tenuta di Arceno I was most beguiled by the sangiovese wines that are native to the region. And none intrigued me more than this rich, flavorful, food-friendly, structured, beautifully made wine. Cronin told me it made itself, and I believe him. It was nature all the way. Selected from a single block in a single vineyard year in and year out, the name of this wine translates to “street of stones,” an homage to Jess Stonestreet Jackson.

by KELLY J. HAYES

A WINEMAKER’S JOURNEY The best part of this story remains to be told. It is about winemaker Lawrence Cronin, a native of New Jersey who has been adopted by wine and has made his life living in Tuscany as a result. I’ll tell you about Lawrence in a future column. Maybe I’ll have to go back to San Gusmè for a follow up interview first.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Arcanum Valadorna Vineyard and House; Winemaker Lawrence Cronin at a tasting at Tenuta di Arceno in Tuscany; Not the curved vines on the label of the wine; “Il Fauno” is a deity of nature in Roman mythology and the namesake of one of the three wines produced by Arcanum.

THE FIRST ANNUAL EDIBLE GIFT GUIDE (AND LESSONS ALONG THE WAY)

AMANDA RAE

HAPPY HOLIDAZE! In slogging through the rigorous, mind-altering research required to assemble this roundup of cannabis-infused edible treats from Aspen’s six pot shops*, I learned a lot. First, some good news: While Sour Patch Kids sprayed with THC oil might fulfill nostalgia for the early days of legalization circa-2012, infused edibles today comprise a brave new world of chocolate bars and truffles, caramels, taffies, gummies, hard candies, cookies, brownies, crackers, soda and more. And they taste better than ever, with

less of the bitter, bottom-of-acashed-bowl resin flavor thanks to techy extraction processes and heightened cravings for High Times Cannabis Cup glory (the industry’s premier competition, established in 1988). Some estimates place edible marijuana as half of the $4.5 billion pot business. That’s a snack attack. The dudes and dudettes hawking bud in Aspen today are passionate, trained professionals. They will patiently explain that the effect created by the psychoactive component in marijuana, THC,

differs depending on marijuana strain, extraction process, base ingredient (oil, butter), and each individual’s unique chemical makeup. Find what works for you through responsible trial and error. Start small — 2.5 to 5mg THC is a good baseline for newbies. Not feeling it? Wait at least an hour before making that call. (Edibles kick in anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours, as influenced by many factors.) I disembarked from this delicious, discreet journey with a memorable takeaway, contrary to what I’d always assumed: Consuming fatty foods

alongside cannabis edibles only enhances the high. So, in honor of one of the greatest pairings on the planet — weed and pizza, obviously — and to send a wacky, weird 2016 to bed, I present to you some of the tastiest, THC-infused offerings on the local market to help you relax more deeply during the holidays with those you love. *The saturation of pot shops in Aspen translates to a lot of product crossover. If one store is out of stock, try the others in town.

SANTA’S LIL’ HELPER GIFT BOX Three products for two people, 90mg THC total, $50 with membership card at Stash Aspen ON GLORIOUS powder days destined to turn legs to toast, what’s better than a mellow, full-body buzz to enhance the epic experience? Getting a jolt of energy along with it, à la Cannabis Coffee. Canyon Cultivation director of operations Timothy McMurray sips the bold, rich brew—made with Guatemalan beans roasted by award-winning Coda Coffee in Denver—from a hydroflask throughout the day. Each 10-ounce bottle (with room for cream) boasts 100 mg caffeine and 10mg THC from fully emulsified hash oil. “You can micro-dose really well, because you’re ingesting it sublingually,” McMurray says. Find two bottles in the stress-less Santa’s Lil’ Helper Gift Box, along with two Lik It strawberry lemonade suckers (10 mg THC each) and 10 pieces of caramel apple Suck It hard candies created exclusively for the kit with Ambulance OG, a strain that boasts a rare high-CBD-to-THC ratio (2:1). Each candy has 5 mg THC and 2.5mg CBD (the non-psychoactive component known for pain relief), “Anytime you can add in more cannabinoids from the plant into your dosage, it’s beneficial,” McMurray says. “CBD has mellowing, calming effects mixed with THC…some studies say THC [is required] to activate CBD.” Bonus: One box contains a golden ticket redeemable for prizes including coffee for a year, and it hadn’t been found as of this writing. Happy hunting!

LOVE’S OVEN BAKED GOODS 10 pieces x 10 mg THC each, $26 at Original Leaf Aspen COMPRISING more than a dozen varieties of cookies, brownies, caramels, bars, and crackers (including glutenfree peanut butter bites), Love’s Oven bakes its treats with butter infused with specific strains of flower instead of trim medley from various plants. Whatever else they do is icing: these goodies are tops in flavor and texture with minimal weedy aftertaste. However, do yourself a favor and avoid the Rosemary Cheddar Crackers with Pakistani Kush Indica— imagine attempting to ingest only the equivalent of a single Cheez-It: torture! Instead, I highly recommend the sweet stuff, such as S’mores Brownie Bites with uplifting Durban Poison sativa.

(Pro tip: chuck the silver childproof outer pouch and wrap the box solo, as each is printed “8.25 mg ! THC,” standard according to new labeling laws.) Portions are satisfying, in contrast to other chocolate bonbons on the market. Pop the whole thing at once and let it melt, or take three to four bites to bliss….

BLUE KUDU CHOCOLATE BARS 10 ounces x 100mg THC total, $23 at Native Roots Aspen

Green Dragon Cannabis Co. 409 E. Hyman Ave. 970-429-4365 greendragoncolorado.com Open daily 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“UNWIND ANYTIME” with Blue Kudu’s decadent gourmet chocolate bars in tempting combinations clearly created by stoners: Craters of the Moon (white chocolate cookies ’n’ cream), Mesa Skyline (toffee-almond milk chocolate). Upon sampling a single square serving of silky smooth Alpine Glacier (dark chocolate mint), I was whisked back to being a kid, pilfering the candy basket before bolting from my favorite hometown steakhouse. Fellow fans of Andes Mints will LOVE this—but good luck on not devouring the entire bar in one sitting.

CANNABIS QUEEN JERKY 10mg THC, $7 at Roots Rx EACH five-gram serving of Teriyaki or Hot and Spicy jerky has 10 mg of organic C02-extracted THC oil infused into bison meat from a South Dakota ranch—slabs of it chopped, ground, spiced, and dehydrated at the company’s Aspen ABC facility since July. “We get the weed from the same grow every time, so we know it’s organic; CO2 extractions will concentrate all pesticides in the THC oil,” says operations manager Bryn Lehmkuhl. Cannabis Queen originally intended to produce whole-muscle beef jerky, “but we got a call from the USDA office in Denver—[marijuana is] illegal on a federal level,” Lehmkuhl explains. (Thanks to an archaic law loophole, game meats such as bison and elk are not subject to USDA inspection.) No worries, the Pitkin County health department keeps the savory, chewy Mary Jane jerky in check.

CODA SIGNATURE TRUFFLES 6 pieces x 10 mg THC each, $29, and HOT CHOCOLATE ON A SPOON, 10mg THC, $7, exclusively at Green Dragon Cannabis Company SAY HELLO to a beautiful box: CODA Signature Truffles resemble tiny works of art and unveil symphonies of flavor. Each six-piece collection boasts three combinations—Forté (roasted hazelnut milk chocolate; passion fruit caramel with Szechuan peppercorn; tiramisu with dark chocolate and espresso mascarpone) won big at the 2016 Cannabis Cup in April—made by French-trained chocolatier Lauren Gockley, named one of Dessert Professional’s Top 10 Chocolatiers in North America. For yourself, grab a Hot Chocolate on a Spoon with Marshmallows to melt in a mug of hot milk...or suck straight off the wooden stick, a preferred method.

ASPEN UNTUCKED

The 911 dispatcher: A job that matters more than you think.

A CAREER THAT FLIES UNDER THE RADAR THE PITKIN COUNTY EMERGENCY DISPATCH CENTER IS IN SEARCH OF NEW HIRES

ONE TRUTH in this country that we all know, yet probably few have had to test, is that if you ever need to dial 911, your call will be answered. It’s a service we’ve all grown so used to having that we don’t even think about it much. We don’t realize how vital those three numbers truly are until we find ourselves in a situation that warrants BARBARA PLATTS dialing them. I have not ever had to dial 911 in my 26 years of life, at least not yet (knocks on wood). However, over the past couple of weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to listen to the receiving end of those calls at the Pitkin County Dispatch Center. I did it as part of a story for Aspen Public Radio, but I was so moved by the experience that the story managed to spill onto my column page. One doesn’t have to spend long at the dispatch center to understand what the employees, commonly known as dispatchers or “first, first” responders, do. They listen to multiple radio channels for police and other responders, they answer 911 and service calls and expedite the proper response. Plus, they operate the doors at the Pitkin

F

County Jail for the guards. Often times, they even have special research projects to work on for officers, or even a citizen. Dispatchers have their finger on the pulse of just about everything going on in the area. As impressive as this job is, the center has had a hard time hiring and retaining dispatchers. They currently have seven, but a full staff is 14. The dispatch center hasn’t actually been fully staffed since 2011, meaning that the current dispatchers have had to work a lot of overtime hours. This isn’t a problem specific to Pitkin County. It’s a national issue that many emergency dispatch centers face. The reasons for this vary, but a big one is that people don’t see it as a career; very few even know what a dispatcher does on a dayto-day basis. The job also requires a lot of training time because there are so many facets to it. It typically takes a new employee 6 to 8 months to learn everything, and many of them don’t make it past this period because they feel too overwhelmed. The new communications director at the dispatch center, Brett Loeb, talked with me about this issue. He took the helm of the center in November, coming from a similar position in Grand Junction, where they also

D e c e m b e r 22 - D e c e m b e r 2 8, 20 16

experienced staffing troubles. He gets why new hires can feel so confused at first. “You sit in here and you see eight monitors in front of you and you hear the phone ringing and the radio going all the time, and you’re like, ‘There is no way I can do this,’” Loeb said. Loeb has adopted new techniques for training dispatchers in order to lessen the intensity of the training. He said that worked very well in Grand Junction, and he intends on implementing a similar strategy in Pitkin County. As a “first, first” responder in an accident, it’s often hard to get closure once all is said and done. I experienced that when I watched dispatch supervisor Ginny Bultman take a 911 call from Basalt. A woman had gotten out of her vehicle and it somehow rolled over her, crushing her leg. Someone called to explain the situation. Bultman, who is a dispatcher veteran, acted entirely calm, getting their exact location, dispatching an ambulance, collecting more information about the injury, and even giving the caller techniques on how to stop the bleeding. She stayed on the phone with the caller until the ambulance got there. Then her work was done. She let the person on the other end

of the line go, and that was that. Bultman may never find out what happened to that woman. Even a week later, I still wonder. But that is what dispatchers deal with every day. They exemplify strength, compassion, extreme organizational skills and a sense of calm that is crazily impressive. Bultman said the job can be challenging at times, but it’s truly the right one for her. “Every day is completely different,” Bultman said. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” A newer dispatcher to the job, Meg Braisted, admits that the job isn’t easy, but the fact that they get to help people everyday is extremely rewarding. “I love it. It’s challenging. But, ultimately, you get to make a difference in someone’s life,” Braisted said. “That’s what it comes down to. I really like that. I love the people I work with, and I love this community.” If you’re interested in learning more about the Pitkin County dispatcher position, go to www.pitkincounty.com.

Barbara Platts wants to thank the dispatch center for allowing her to come in and watch them at work. Reach her at bplatts.000@gmail. com.

If the dry Aspen climate or high-altitude locale has your friends and family asking for help from Santa, try L’occitane’s Shea Butter Duo (pure Organic Shea Butter Tin from Burkina Faso, West Africa, and award-winning 20 percent shea butter hand cream); $20. Or, for those short of breath, try Oxygen in Can, available at several local shops (including Carl’s Pharmacy).

Under $20.

3. CHILD’S PLAY There is some truth to the fact that young children like the wrapping paper and boxes as much as the gift inside, so we like to believe Santa need not go wild in stuffing their stockings. A few things that always please the little ones: “Poop-A-Troopers” at Carl’s (.49 cents apiece); a book or game from The Thrift Shop of Aspen ($1-$3 each); a roll of quarters and a few unstructured hours to play video games at Ryno’s.

Less than $1 to $10 4. SOCK IT TO ME

Yes, giving socks for Christmas is cliché, but it’s also a necessary evil. What’s not necessary is giving ugly socks. Have some fun with it — these “ski scene” socks from Pitkin County Dry Goods are excellent ski-town stocking stuffers; $21.50. Or, go online and pay it forward while giving that gift of socks — Bombas, www.bobmas.com, donates a pair of socks to a homeless shelter for every pair purchased. And, if all else fails, visit the cacaphony that is Carl’s Pharmacy. Seriously, if you can’t find a gift in the jam-packed aisles — where water bottles and socks sit sideby-side with board games and sewing supplies — it’s probably time to call it quits and hope for better shopping in 2017. Merry,

VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | CHERRY CREEK

By AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

CHERRY CREEK CHIC

DISCOVERING THE NEW HALCYON HOTEL IN DENVER IT’S THE FIRST HOTEL to open in Cherry Creek, Denver’s upscale shopping district, in more than a decade, and fortunately for Aspen-area residents, the hotel’s concept will make them feel right at home. “We designed the hotel to feel like you were visiting your very chic friend’s house in the mountains,” says AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY Halcyon Director of Sales, Anne Frye. “Beginning with check in.” Like every great mountain house, the lobby of Halcyon features the “Kitchen Counter.” Here vest-clad millennials check guests in on their laptops, who have bellied up to the counter for a cocktail or two of their choice. From Intelligentsia espresso to Champagne, all drinks, snacks and a continental breakfast at the Halyon are included in your stay — and that’s just the beginning of a long list of resort amenities that attracts guests to this property. Perhaps the coolest extra at Halcyon, an independent hotel, is the Gear Garage. Located on the main floor, the room is filled with

30

F

hand-picked seasonal gear — from bikes and skateboards and even a Vespa in warmer months to ski jackets, fat bikes and snowboards and skis in winter. No longer do you need to drag all of your gear to Denver to have fun, and for guests who are visiting the city, they can grab a bike and ride the Cherry Creek Bike Path, or reserve the gear for a day trip to the mountains. Should the streets of Cherry Creek prove too crowded for your Halcyon longboard, the staff will put you and your gear into the house Land Rover and spin you to Washington Park. All rides from Halcyon, within 5 miles of the resort — meaning LoDo, Coors Field and the Denver Zoo — are on the house. When not shopping Cherry Creek’s great stores, or at the Cherry Creek mall which is two blocks away, the 154 rooms at Halcyon are efficiently designed and full of light for a relaxing retreat. Every room is outfitted with a vertical turntable and a selection of LPs according to your musical preferences. Open year round is the rooftop pool and hot tub with a great view of the Denver skyline, and in the summer Departure, the

hotel’s adjoining restaurant (see sidebar) opens a rooftop sushi and dim sum restaurant and bar called Departure Elevated, with full-service cabanas available by request. A third dining experience, Quality Italian, an Italian-American steakhouse, is scheduled to open at the hotel next month. Before heading to dinner, I enjoyed a glass of wine in Halcyon’s living room, where there is a collection of contemporary art pieces and comfortable couches to gather with friends. Halcyon is not a luxury hotel, things like turndown service and high-end linens are not a part of this experience. Instead, its modern luxury concept focused on friendly, hip community and a whole sensory experience, the perfect place to base your city adventures. Roaring Fork Valley residents can experience Halcyon at a discounted rate this winter, starting at $199 through March 31. To book the rate, visit www.halcyonhotelcherrycreek.com and use the code ASPEN. Amiee White Beazley writes about travel for the Aspen Times Weekly. Reach her at awb@awbeazley.com or follow her @awbeazley1.

WHERE TO EAT IN DENVER TAKE OFF AT DEPARTURE Stepping into Departure, the new Pan Asian restaurant adjacent to Halcyon, is like boarding a private plane destined for the other side of the Pacific. Dominated by an airplane-like bar in the center of the restaurant and white leather booths surrounding it, the modern feel of the space and food does indeed create a “departure” from other dining experiences in Denver. The only thing better than enjoying the spicy bibimbap, sushi and wok-fired beef chow fun is taking some home, giving the flavors a night to mingle and eating it again at lunch. For a starter, don’t miss the great cocktails and signature Departure Wings with sweet chili glaze. SUNDAY FOOTBALL IN THE CITY I am always looking for a great rooftop restaurant and bar to grab a bite and beer before a Rockies game at Coors Field. While baseball season is still months away, I made a visit to ViewHouse at its ballpark location (there is a second restaurant in Centennial), for Sunday brunch and football. With a fantastic bloody Mary bar, and dishes like scrambled egg tacos with applewood-smoked bacon, chicken and waffles and a short-rib skillet, the difference at this sports bar is that the food not only tastes great, but the restaurant prides itself on its sustainable food policy. With many locally sourced ingredients, the dishes are fresh and satisfying. Not to mention ViewHouse shows every NFL game on dozens of TV’s throughout its three levels. A great sports bar within view of the ballfield. Can’t wait to return next summer.

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

MUSIC/ART/FILM/LITERATURE

by ANDREW TRAVERS

THE WEIRD AND WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE FLAMING LIPS THE FLAMING LIPS gave Aspen one of its most memorable onstage moments of the year back in February when, in the wake of David Bowie’s death, the Oklahoma psych-rockers took the stage at Belly Up and played an eight-song tribute to the pop music legend. Lips appearances have become routine around here since the band’s Belly Up debut in 2010 — their Dec. 29 concert marks their third stop there this year. But, of course, there’s never anything routine about a Flaming Lips show. Their mix of stage theatrics, folk and rock have made for singular experiences in each local outing. At the first show here, frontman Wayne Coyne popped his signature “space bubble” — a human-sized hamster wheel in which he surfs on crowds — while attempting to roll off the stage. The local shows have been among the few small-venue appearances the band has made in recent years, but they haven’t been shy about breaking out their full bag of tricks: confetti canons, massive mirror balls, Coyne’s prosthetic lasershooting hands, balloons and, of course, the space bubble. “Whenever I hear music, I ask, ‘What’s the visual that goes with that?’” Coyne told The Aspen Times during one of the band’s year-end swings through town. “Whenever I see something visual, I think, ‘What’s the sound of that?’” Coyne and his merry pranksters play an inimitable brand of rock, a Pink Floyd-tinged sound they’ve perfected since they started playing together more than 30 years ago. They’ve had just one bona fide commercial hit, 1993’s “She Don’t Use Jelly,” but came into their own creatively with 1999’s “The Soft Bulletin.” It was around then that they started adding all the bells and whistles to their live shows and earning a reputation as the best spectacle on the festival circuit. “We just thought we had nothing to lose by being a group that tried weird things,” Coyne said. “It was, ‘What more can we do?’ And that

freed us up — I could throw confetti and use puppets. I put myself in the audience and think: What would I want to see?” Their songs can tend toward the surreal, like “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” but more often the Flaming Lips tread some serious existential ground. Their last album of originals, 2013’s “The Terror,” was a dark and atmospheric trip. Coyne’s lyrical focus on the dark side, curiously, led to the the joyful and cathartic fun we’ve come to expect out of their live shows. “I don’t want to bum the people out,” he said. “I don’t want the audience to go home and blow their brains out. I want them laughing and enjoying themselves, so we have balloons. I’d do whatever I could to communicate to them that this was entertainment. We knew we were singing about things so personal and powerful that, if they internalized it, it wouldn’t be fun. A lot of times, people look at the guys onstage and say, ‘Yeah, I want to be like them.’” The band also is due to release a

new album, “Oczy Mlody,” on Jan. 13. So expect a preview of the new material, as well. While they’re in town, the Lips also are performing at the Aspen Art Museum benefit, The Now, on Dec. 28. A limited number of $500 tickets are available for that show, while tickets to the full fundraising event range from $1,500 to $50,000.
