THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION

with STEWART OKSENHORN

FILM IT’S THE DAY AFTER Christmas and all you want to do is sit, relax and be entertained. A movie sounds perfect — and perhaps even more perfect is a full night in the theater, with back-to-back movies. Aspen Film’s Academy Screenings series has an immensely appealing double bill on Thursday, Dec. 26. First up is “Her,” the latest bit of out-there storytelling from Spike Jonze, the mind behind “Being John Malkovich” and “Adaptation.” This one has Joaquin Phoenix as a secluded writer who gets into an intimate relationship with his computer’s operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. “Her” is nominated for three Golden Globes, including best film, best screenplay and best actor. Right after is “Labor Day,” Jason Reitman’s adaptation of a novel about a mother (Kate Winslet) who gets entangled with an escaped convict (Josh Brolin). Making the evening even more attractive — neither film gets released till well into January. Academy Screenings continues with movies each day through Jan. 2, all at the Wheeler Opera House.

Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet star in “Labor Day,” showing Thursday, Dec. 26 at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen Film’s Academy Screenings series.

CURRENTEVENTS POPULAR MUSIC

Bluessinger- harmonica player Curtis Salgado headlines the Speakeasy New Year’s Eve party at the St. Regis Aspen. The Flaming Lips, with singer Wayne Coyne, play Dec. 30-31 at Belly Up.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

EVERY YEAR it’s a true buzz topic — What is Belly Up going to bring for the holidays? — and every year the answer justifies the buzz. The club’s holiday lineup this year brings in an act that’s new to town, dork rockers Weezer, who play a two-night stand, Thursday and Friday, Dec. 26-27, and a few returning favorites. Rufus Wainwright, the reigning master of smart, sophisticated pop, does his annual Christmastime show on Sunday, Dec. 29; later that night, Moby, who last year did a singer-songwriter performance at Belly Up, brings a DJ set to the club. On Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 30-31, the Flaming Lips light up the place with their theatrical, grand-scale rock show. Be sure to save a little something: Next week, big-time indie rockers the National make their local debut with a two-night stand, Jan. 2-3.

YOU CAN’T GET away from New Year’s Eve in Aspen, not with two rounds of fireworks and people reveling in the streets, the restaurants and the clubs. Best to embrace the madness. The St. Regis Aspen has the Speakeasy, a Prohibition-themed party with snacks, Champagne and music by bluesman Curtis Salgado and singer Nikki Hill. The Wheeler Opera House bash has music by swampy rockers the Delta Saints, a sweet view of the fireworks, and an open bar. (Yes, an open bar. On New Year’s Eve.) Downvalley, PAC3 in Carbondale gets 2014 off on a funky foot with Colorado band Euforquestra.

THE WEEKLY CONVERSATION

with JOHN COLSON

Christmas chuckles from the far-right fringe I GET THESE weekly emailed newsletters from an outfit named The National Memo, which clearly is a left-leaning entity but which pledges to its readers that it will avoid overtly extremist partisan affiliation in its own perspective on things. I have to say, I usually enjoy it, particularly its Friday roundup of wacky doings on the extreme right side of the political spectrum, titled “This Week in Crazy.” Sometimes there’s enough nutty stuff going on that they can count down from 10, but this week’s catalog contained only five. Maybe it’s a sort of early Christmas present to the nut-jobs, I don’t know — keeping the derision and the sarcasm to a minimum. Anyway, it’s a lulu, as they almost always are. Counting down from five, the memo goes straight to Rush Limbaugh, a longtime staple of the Crazy lists whose face and name have been rather scarce of late. But this week they brought him back for his support of Fox News host Megyn Kelly, the poor, confused and extremely well-paid commentator who recently became the first woman to “take up arms in the Race War On Christmas” by reporting on national television that, obviously, Santa Claus is white, always was and always will be. Oh, and Jesus was white, too. Rush ludicrously proclaimed that every portrayal of Santa, anywhere and by anybody, has depicted the jolly old man in red and white as, you guessed it, white of skin, and shouted his agreement to the rooftops. Notwithstanding that this is patently false (Google Santa yourself and see), you have to ask why these intellectual midgets would even step into this swamp of conflicting emotions and politics. Forget that, because Rush then went on to say any attempt to portray Santa as a person of color was “worse than political correctness. This is Stalinism.” Prompting a second inquiry about Rush’s grasp on reality. No. 4 on the list (would have been my number one) is New Hampshire state Rep. J.R. Hoel, who went on record advising former Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Brown to stay out of New Hampshire or risk getting shot. Not in those words, of course, but Hoel did

refer to the possibility of “a day when firearms and ammo are necessary” to keep political carpetbaggers out of their state. Brown, who was beaten out of the Senate by Elizabeth Warren, recently moved to New Hampshire amid rampant speculation that he will challenge Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. Brown also has said he supports federal guncontrol restrictions, which is why Hoel thinks it may soon be open season on Brown. No. 3, right-wing activist Bob Vander Plaats of Iowa and a potential Senate candidate, declared that the timid moves toward ending the ban on gay marriage would lead to nothing less than a complete state of moral decay in which parents will start marrying their own children as a tax shelter. At No. 2 is North Carolina state Sen. Bob Rucho, who let us know in a tweet that “Justice Robert’s (on the U.S. Supreme Court) pen & Obamacare has (sic) done more damage to the USA then (sic, again) the swords of the Nazis, Soviets and terrorists combined.” Finally, the winner was Larry Klayman, far-right paranoiac and conspiracy theorist, whose delusions of grandeur led him to believe that the NSA is out to get him by sending emails from his personal email account, apparently in a bid to discredit this absolute lunatic. As if. Klayman, who was party to the lawsuit that led to a court decision that the NSA’s massive metadata gathering program is unconstitutional, actually got into a war of words with a CNN correspondent, to the point where his microphone was cut off and he was dumped from the interview. All told, it was a mighty goofy week on the far-right fringe, and we can all be grateful for a few chuckles as we edge up on Christmas. The scary part, of course, is that all these loonies take themselves very seriously, and too many uninformed, undereducated and angry white guys take them seriously, too. As has been said countless times in these pages by former Aspen resident and frenetic letter writer KCNB Moore, “Be brave, comrades.”

LEGENDS & LEGACIES

FROM the VAULT

Vive camera: the go-to Christmas gift in 1899 Aspen.

A CAMERA FOR CHRISTMAS EVERY YEAR a hot new item claims a line on everyone’s Christmas list. Beginning in the 1890s, cameras caught the fancy of Aspen’s adults. Photography had evolved from a technical mystery to a personal hobby when George Eastman (founder of the Eastman Kodak company) introduced his hand-held box camera that replaced photographic plates with roll film.

The early models had to be sent, camera and all, to a laboratory for film processing; but in the early 1890s, Eastman devised a method for novices to remove and to change film without requiring a darkroom. Cameras and film could be purchased from local dealers, and film could be processed there or, with little training, at home. Aspen’s stores began stocking cameras and film by 1894. Soon prices dropped and within four years several stores featured the easy-touse cameras. The Aspen Novelty Shop on Mill Street, Overen’s Book and Stationary Store in the Keene Block, plus Perry and Ruckers all sold Kodak cameras. The Morrell Hardware Company (transformed to Tompkins Hardware in 1900) featured cameras alongside mining

equipment at their Galena and Cooper location. Billy Van, “the Camera Man,” led the way to feature cameras as Christmas presents. Also known as “the bicycle man,” Van capitalized on the popularity of that new sport as well.

At the turn of the century, Eastman introduced his Brownie camera (“you press the button — we do the rest”). With that launch of snapshot photography, Kodak regained market share. The brownie sold for a dollar, compared to the larger bellows cameras that ranged

BILLY VAN, “THE CAMERA MAN,” LED THE WAY TO FEATURE CAMERAS AS CHRISTMAS PRESENTS. VIVE CAMERAS, MADE IN CHICAGO FROM 1985 TO 1907, GAINED POPULARITY IN ASPEN. Eastman’s Kodak brand encountered competition: several Aspen’s stores sold small-sized Premo cameras, made by Rochester Optical Company. The Premo box — a 6-inch cube with a lenscontaining bellows that unfolded outward —weighed about 2 pounds. Vive cameras, made in Chicago from 1895 to 1907, also gained popularity in Aspen.

in price in Aspen from $3 to $25 (one day’s to a week’s wages). A roll of film cost just 15 cents. Photographs of historical Aspen generally fall into two distinct groups, based on the type of camera used: older photos, printed from glass-plate negatives, taken by professional photographers; and photos dated after 1900, printed from roll negatives, taken

by personal photographers. Stored in family albums, the latter snapshots focused on people, with Aspen’s landmarks forming the background. The less expensive cameras became a common high school graduation gift. Ethel Frost, my great-aunt, received one in the early 1900s. She never used it and the camera, in its original box, became a family heirloom. My mother received a bellows Kodak in the mid-1920s. A more technologically brave woman of the following generation, she used it to capture many of the photographs used for this column. We can thank people like her (and George Eastman) for extending Aspen’s historical record. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn2@comcast.net.

ACCORDING TO the Aspen Weekly Times on Aug. 30, 1881, “The Chamber of Commerce is a favorite resort for the tony boys of the town. Every night you see the society boys, the professional ducks and city and county officers, taking comfort out of this resort. Some are engaged in a game of billiards, others playing pool, or casino, while many seat themselves around a table and talk over the affairs of the day. The manager, Harry Newland, is kept busy by mixing fancy drinks, such as ‘Fifth Avenues’, ‘Vicksburgs’, and ‘Sea-foam’, and the way he describes a crescent when mixing a cocktail is marvelous. The usual entertainment will be given tonight. Billy will hold the crowd spellbound with his fancy shots and remarkable feats with the billiard balls.”

GEAR of the WEEK

AN IN-SPYRED SKI BOOT THE DILEMMA: It’s snowing, new terrain is opening and … oh, right, didn’t you mean to get new ski boots this year?

THE FIX:

WHY IT WORKS:

K2’s SpYre 110 (men’s version is the SpYne 110).

Yes, you read that correctly. K2 now makes ski boots. Eight, in fact. All share a rivet-free, integrated cuff and shell that smooth out energy transfer and lend a more natural flex, as well as a Y-shaped piece of plastic at the back that adds strength and lateral stiffness. Tech talk aside, these boots fit my fairly narrow feet well right out of the box, are lighter than my previous boots and have an even, progressive flex. Most important, there’s no slop or wasted energy between moving my foot and moving my ski, but the boot isn’t painfully tight. I prefer a snug fit and often that means I sacrifice a couple of toenails each winter. I don’t anticipate that happening this winter. In fact, I’m so confident, I got a fancy pedicure yesterday.

FROM ASPEN, WITH LOVE

WINEINK

A SUMMER SOJOURN IN JANUARY SO IT IS Boxing Day across the Empire. That would be the British Empire, or at least what is left of it. Boxing Day, the day following Christmas, began as a way to give the gentry an opportunity to reward their loyal subjects and servants with a “Christmas Box” in honor of their service. Perhaps a bottle of Port or Claret for the lucky few? KELLY J. In the same spirit HAYES of giving, I’d like to spirit you all away, at least in your minds, on a wine country journey to a place where the days are long and the summer sun is shining. If I could take you away on this Boxing Day, the location of choice would be that Garden of Eden in the southeastern Pacific called New Zealand. Sure there are wine regions that are bigger, but it is hard to beat the Kiwis for beauty, diversity and quality. New Zealand, with both islands included, is almost exactly the size of Colorado. And yet, the island nation has eight distinct viticulture areas that are currently producing world-class wines. Obviously the coastal influence has much to do with it. But along with geography, geology plays an important role. The islands are relatively young and the alluvial soils that spill from the mountaintops are perfect for growing many varieties of grapes. Let’s start our journey on board a high-flying chariot, Air New Zealand Flight No. 1 from Los Angeles to Auckland leaving tonight at 9:40 and arriving right around dawn. Let’s not forget the dateline crossing. After a day of recovery, we’ll head to the paradise of Hawkes Bay about halfway down the Pacific side of the North Island. Think Santa Barbara with the coast on the other side. Grapes have been grown in this region for wine since 1851, when missionaries, obviously smitten with soils and sun, planted the first vineyards. Today the plains and the surrounding hillsides are filled with vineyards, all pointing to the north and west toward the sea. The artdeco town of Napier is the cultural

center of the region and a clean and energetic community. We start by visiting the famed Gimblett Gravels region and the CJ Pask Winery to taste some of Kate Radburds’ lush and rich Bordeaux varietals. The Merlot grown in the stony soils left behind by the Ngaruroro River when it changed direction 100 or so years ago, is deep, dark and flavorful. In a land known for Sauvignon Blanc, there are surprises awaiting those with an open mind and palate, and many fine Cabernets and Syrahs can be found in the relative summer heat of Hawkes Bay. But there is a reason that New Zealand is known as one of the world’s great producers of Savvy, as the Kiwis refer to their Sauvignon Blanc. Marlborough, our next stop located on the northernmost tip of the South Island, is New Zealand’s most famous wine region. It is the place that not only put New Zealand on the map for wine lovers, it is home of the Sauvignon Blanc grapes that created a huge stir among the wine media and connoisseurs in the 1980s and ’90s when the wines of Cloudy Bay became a sensation. Cloudy Bay was founded in 1985 by an Australian named David Hohnen, who was the owner of Cape Mentelle winery in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. After trying some Savvy left by a visiting winemaker from Marlborough, he was impressed enough to, as the Aussies say, “give it a go.” Hohnen bought 40 tons of grapes, enlisted a young winemaker named Kevin Judd and set about changing the course of history for New Zealand wines. Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc,

despite being the largest selling wine in the history of New Zealand, incongruously became a cult classic. Today it is owned by LVMH, the French Luxury goods company, and is part of Estates & Wines, the Moët Hennessy Wine Division that also owns Cape Mentelle. After some crisp Savvy, the next destination would be what many believe to be the most beautiful wine region on earth. Central Otago, or “Central” as the locals call it, has become ground zero for Pinot-philes. In the last decade it has become one of the hottest wine regions on the planet, thanks largely to its cool climate. Rippon, Mt. Difficulty, and Felton Road may

be the most well-known makers in the valley, but there are a number of other ventures that are gaining traction, including Kalex, owned by Aspen local Alex Kaufman. The secret sauce to this venture is location, location, location. The vineyards sit at 45 degrees south. If one turns the world upside down, that is roughly the same distance from the equator as Bordeaux, Piedmonte and the Willamette Valley, which straddle the same line in the Northern Hemisphere. This is a sweet spot in global grape growing. Add to that fine soils, a climate that provides hot days and cool nights, and an emerging wine culture, and Central Otago may be the most attractive place in the world to own a winery right now. And did I mention that it is dropdead gorgeous? Time to buckle your seat belts folks. We are just beginning our journey in our minds… Stay warm. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soonto-be-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

K.J. SELECTS WINE FROM OUR JOURNEY ... HAWKES BAY Craggy Range Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard 2010 High on a hill overlooking the sea sits Craggy Range Winery. But this blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec owes its beauty to the stony soils in place from its origin. MARLBOROUGH Greywacke 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Winemaker Kevin Judd is a pioneer in New Zealand Savvy. Having been the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay, he now he makes wines with the wacky name of Greywacke. Yes it rhymes with “wacky” and refers to rocky soils of the region.

The wines of New Zealand are as varied as the island country’s landscape.

FOOD MATTERS FOOD MATTERS

BACK TO THE FUTURE

ASPEN’S SHAPESHIFTING DINING LANDSCAPE SHOWS NO SIGNS OF TURNING STAGNANT WHEN THE WHITE HOUSE Tavern opened on a slowly going stale corner of Restaurant Row this spring, naysayers were vehement and vocal in their opposition. “It’s so…corporate,” grumbled some, wary that the far-reaching Hillstone Restaurant Group based in Beverly Hills might taint Aspen’s small-town flavor. The advertisement ran in local newspapers for weeks: AMANDA $1000 sign-on bonus for RAE all White House Tavern employees—mandatory drug test included. Local servers and bartenders scoffed, noting that Hillstone had imported staff from other branches of the chain just to get the White House up and running. Despite the negativity, first bites won rave reviews—not surprising to those familiar with the popular Cherry Creek Grill in Denver and Houston’s across the country. Still, one caveat: the menu was really short. Now, seven months later and with that same simple menu, the White House Tavern has proven itself as a top contender for our dining dollars. It’s cozy, casual, and usually bustling—all good first impressions upon pushing past the entryway’s velvet curtain. Service is friendly and efficient, if a bit inflexible (blame it on the chain). And the picture-window kitchen turns out instant classics that satisfy popular cravings, such as an Asian-inspired kale salad with crushed peanuts, succulent French dip, and insanely addictive crispy chicken sandwich, three talks of the town this year. “There is definitely the New Shiny Object Syndrome,” says Dean Weiler of eatAspen, the online guide to area eateries since 2007. “For a new restaurant to be successful in Aspen they need to get it right immediately, there’s not much room for error. To become a local’s favorite, a place needs great service, a menu that is somewhere between comfort food and new adventure, a loyal working dynamic for the staff. It’s also helpful to dial into the scene by filling a niche that’s missing and working the ebb and flow of the seasons.” When a universally adored restaurant seems to check off all of the above but still fails, the effects can be soul-crushing.

18

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

F

“I’m heartbroken that Pacifica closed,” Weiler says, echoing scores of distressed diners after the breezy seafood spot with one of the best patios in town announced a month ago that it would not be reopening, ever. Same for its neighbor Above the Salt, also independently owned. Weiler asks what we’re all thinking: “What’s gonna happen to those two spaces?” C. Barclay Dodge, a fixture on the dining scene since the mid-1990s, Pacifica’s outgoing executive chef, and now a free agent, is no stranger to the hustle. “I’ve operated mom-and-pop joints the whole time, though they’re high end,” Dodge says. “Aspen’s a really difficult town, as a restaurateur, to make money. With the off-seasons and rent...There are certainly restaurants in town that do well, but literally only a half-dozen of them.” Perhaps a small comfort: two of the top three most lucrative restaurants— Cache Cache and Jimmy’s—are, in fact, independently owned. Third is the Aspen outpost of Nobu Matsuhisa’s namesake empire. (A reversal to watch: Zeno Aspen, opened by Marco Cingolani of Justice Snow’s, which replaces flailing New York import Il Mulino.) What’s the secret recipe? “Wine and booze sales have a lot to do with it,” Dodge says. “Longevity has a lot to do with it. And they just fit a niche. It’s the right combination of all those things.” Food expert and author Laura Werlin describes a special tension between the fresh-and-hip versus the tried-andtrue. “I think Aspenites want to like the “new” more than they actually do,” she says. “That’s why Matsuhisa and Cache Cache have lasted for so long. They’re excellent, and you know what you’re going to get each and every time.” An atmosphere and energy that taps into old-time Aspen is almost essential. L’Hostaria reportedly has had one of its strongest years since opening in 1996. Other longstanding favorites — Piñons, Rustique Bistro, Ajax Tavern, and Mezzaluna — are consistently busy. bb’s Kitchen made a seemingly risky move to abandon its popular brunch service in favor of dinner only. One only needs to look to the abrupt closure and swift resurrection of Little Annie’s Eating House this fall to see how deeply these longtime favorites affect diners. “‘Identifiable’ is the operative

D e c e m b e r 26 - Janu ar y 1 , 20 14

word,” Werlin says. “Not many people want to have to analyze what they’re eating; they just want to like it.” (And pronounce it: most of us have heard about an Italian restaurant in the St. Regis, but you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who knows what the heck it’s called.) While Dodge is taking a break from the mountains to test the waters in St. Louis, he’s optimistic that outside influences, if able to strike a balance with our small-town vibe, will only make Aspen stronger. “People are expecting some level of professionalism,” Dodge says. “I think its good to have an organized situation in Aspen. David Burke — he’s a major player out there in the restaurant world. The fact that he’s using a local management team is really smart. White House, they have their shit together. Everyone really digs it. I’ve been there 20 times, if not more. I think it’s good for town, to knock us up a few notches.” Snowmass is certainly stepping it up with new spots, including Double Black Noodle House, opening during the Winter X Games in January, and the Slow Your Roll slopeside bowling alley outfitted with a wood-fired pizza oven. Los Angeles-based celebrity chef Tim Goodell raised eyebrows when he unveiled not one but two new restaurants — Ricard and Bia Hoi — in the long-doomed Base Village. First reports are glowing. “The rise of the national brands probably indicates a resiliency of the Aspen market,” says

Maureen Poschman of Promo Communications. Bootsy Bellows, the new Rat Pack-reminiscent nightclub co-owned by David Arquette, replaces Syzygy but also serves food, unlike its Hollywood counterpart. Another cue: the return of prominent chefs to their original stomping grounds—Bryan Moscatello back to The Little Nell after winning national accolades in Denver; Rob Zack’s Hotel Jerome homecoming after opening the Viceroy Snowmass; Todd Slossberg to Chef’s Club by Food & Wine at the St. Regis after decades at the Jerome and Aspen Meadows. While there may not necessarily be more dining options this year (see “Hello, Goodbye,” opposite page), sales are robust. According to Chris Lundgren, account supervisor with the city of Aspen finance department, October year-to-date 2013 restaurant/ bar sales (the most recent data available) are up 4 percent from the first 10 months of 2012. Furthermore, the 2014 budget presented to city council on October 1 projects a 3 percent sales increase. “Aspen has always had a great reputation for food, but to me it felt like it was losing its edge,” Werlin says. “Now it’s back and seemingly stronger than ever. Once again, we are reminded that Aspen is not only the world’s best ski resort, it is also a destination-dining town as well. It simply doesn’t get better than that.” Amanda Rae would be thrilled to see an Indian restaurant in town. What about you? amandaraewashere@gmail.com

XXX BLOODY MARY With the holidays here, it seems like there is one event after another and being a festive type of person, I need to start some of these mornings with a Bloody Mary. I stopped in to see my friend Andy at Smoke and he had me try their XXX Bloody Mary. It has amazing spices and their signature XXX BBQ Sauce, which got me right back on track to take holiday shopping on with a vengeance. Bloody Mary’s can be hit or miss, but I would add them to your holiday wish list to help you get through this season with style. Pus, a good Bloody Mary can serve as a hangover cure or a nutritious breakfast. Happy Holidays. Gunilla Asher is publisher of The Aspen Times. ASPEN UNTUCKED

LIVING LARGE WHILE STAYING SCRIMPY BALANCING FUNDS IN THE PRICIEST OF PLACES

ONE OF THE classic sayings my uncle is famous for stating time and time again is, “You don’t go on a vacation to save money.” He tends to pronounce this on a trip after my family has dropped a pretty penny on a nice dinner or gotten carried away with a shopping excursion. It’s true, taking a vacation is not a lucrative business and most expect to be BARBARA lacking in funds once PLATTS it’s over. But what do you do if your life is a vacation? There is no getting around it; we live in a pricey town. Aspen is expensive. And for the younger generation, who are entering the workforce, presumably cut off from parental support to some or full extent, keeping a balance in the bank account is not easy. I would like to say that there is some secret formula to it, a way to save money while keeping experiences and material possessions plentiful and evercoming. But alas, one does not exist. There are, however, strategies that may keep you from indulging in spendthrift ways.

When it comes to retail…

We may not be shopping at Louis Vuitton or Burberry anytime soon, but luckily, affordable shops in Aspen still exist. Consignment shops like Susie’s Consignments or Amber’s Uptown Consignments offer a myriad of options, all in good shape. With perseverance and a little bit of digging, you can often find true gems in these stores. I have seen everything from a fleeced cheetah-print onesie for Highlands Closing Day to a Prada leather jacket for a night out. If you’re not finding what you are looking for, venture downvalley for more consignment and thrift stores.

When it comes to dining and imbibing…

If you’ve spent even a short amount of time in Aspen, you

22

probably realize the financial benefit of sitting on a bar stool in a nice restaurant. The appetizers and entrees are about 50 percent off. Bar menus in town are a great way to sample amazing food at restaurants like L’Hostaria, Rustique and Jimmy’s, without ending up with a horrendously large tab at the end of your dining experience. The meal size and quality are the same as the dishes in the dining room, plus the bar offers a lively and fun scene. Always make friends with your bartender or server. You never know when they may top off your wine glass or buy you a round for a special occasion…or just on a random Monday night.

When it comes to exercise….

A ski pass is anything but cheap. Even if you have one it may not be the only source of exercise you desire in the winter. Gym memberships tend to come with

D e c e m b e r 26 - Janu ar y 1 , 20 14

a hefty fee and running outside on icy roads invites danger. Invest in simple gear like snowshoes or Yaktrax to get the cardio blast you need at a reasonable price. Most trails are still open and accessible in the winter with a pair of snowshoes. And Yaktrax are the perfect tool for hiking up the slopes of any of the four mountains.

The bar at La’Hostaria is a fun and lively scene every night of the week.

These are just a few of the strategies I learned in my first year here. Sometimes they work and other evenings I find myself paying a tab that far exceeds my budget. But, at the end of the day, I have to remind myself that by living here I am getting more than my bank account is worth. I get the privilege of living on vacation all of the time. What many people from around the world refer to as a first-class destination, I get to call my home. So, perhaps that is a good trade on my investment. After all, you don’t come to Aspen to save money.

VOYAGES

ESCAPE ARTIST | ARGENTINA

BUY YOUR OWN SOUTH AMERICAN VINEYARD (IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK)

THE UCO VALLEY in Argentina is one of the top wine regions in South America, and home to nearby Mendoza and the famous Malbec winemaking tradition. It is also one of the most exciting, emerging regions for travel in 2014. Almost a decade ago, American Michael Evans traveled to Argentina for what he thought would be a three-week vacation. But he fell in love with AMIEE WHITE the people and the place BEAZLEY that is Mendoza and decided to embark on an adventure of creating Argentina’s greatest wines. “It is just stunningly beautiful, and I discovered the Andes’ great wines,” Evans says. “I fell in love with the place. Instead of staying for three weeks, I decided to stay for over nine years.” After a chance introduction to Pablo Gimenez-Riili during that first visit to Mendoza, Evans and GimenezRiili endeavored to provide the highest quality wine experience to Mendoza travelers, and help those who love wine make their own. The result was The Vines of Mendoza. Together they

raised money from friends and family, and purchased 650 acres of land in the Uco Valley, creating The Vines of Mendoza’s one-of-a-kind Private Vineyard Estates. “The genesis of my personal journey is that this is such an engaging, wonderful, warm and welcoming place, this idea came out of potentially doing a hotel one day and wanting to make wine from my own vineyard,” Evans says. Each personalized plot is 3 to 10 acres, and owners can attend to it as much or as little as they like. Plant, harvest, bottle, label independently or share the work with The Vines’ team of wine experts. The infrastructure and oversight is managed by the property; they will even help their winemakers sell the wine online or through local distributors should you choose to share their personal vintages. For the last 10 years, The Vines has brought 120 aspiring winemakers from around the world to buy into its property and craft wines their own. “This is much bigger than a collection of gentleman farmers,” he says. “Our owners own the property and make decisions. We guide them along the way with expert winemakers. And, if they want, we

do the hard work — and leave the blending and drinking to them. Some owners want to plant, they come down for that and come back for harvest. But it is not simply a label winemaking process. People can — and do — get their hands dirty.” The shared vineyard model makes it possible for all wine lovers to become winemakers on their own estate, he says. Buyers include the very wellheeled, but those with budgets as well. For example, there is a group of college friends who pooled their money together to buy several acres, and now produce their own label of wine at The Vines. “We make something possible for people who otherwise would find this kind of life impossible and something only for wealthy of the wealthiest,” Evans says. “These are private vineyard estates, you have your own vineyard and make your own wine. It is very personalized.” And while Malbec is the dominant grape, Evans estimates The Vines planted 20 different varietals last year, and produced several hundred different wines for and with its owners, many of which made it to market. Evans’ dream of a hotel and

sharing the winemaking experience with others is now coming to fruition. At the end of this month, the vineyard will also be home to the highly anticipated The Vines Resort and Spa, a sister property to The Vines of Mendoza. Set on 1,500 acres, the resort’s 22 villas have floor-to-ceiling windows, capturing the natural light from 300 days of sun each year, and stunning surrounding views of the vineyards and the Andes. At The Vines Resort and Spa you can be a winemaker for a day, working the harvest in April, blending Malbecs, or use the luxury retreat as a portal for extended activity in the area, including mountain biking and climbing, or riding horses through the picturesque vineyards. To ensure visitors get everything out of their trip to Mendoza, The Vines Resort and Spa has gathered a staff full of Argentinian natives. Among them are three young men they call Gauchos, with a capital “G.” They are personal tour guides, concierge, storytellers — your new local friend whom you can rely on to take the guess work out of traveling and give firsthand knowledge of the country, the outdoors, wine, food and culture. “We want everyone to get out into the fields get out and pick some grapes,” Evans says. “People’s tastes in vacationing are changing. Now they want to go and learn something — learn how to make empanadas and get on a horse. They can do that all here. Perhaps you’ve been to Napa or Burgundy and you are looking for something more adventurous, to dig in and get engaged. Here, they have a little bit more.” Amiee White Beazley writes about travel for the Aspen Times Weekly. Reach her at awb@awbeazley.com or follow her @awbeazley1.

DESTINATION | HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY

WILDERNESS FOUND IN A BMW STRAPPING ON a full-face helmet has a way of focusing your attention. I fire up my BMW’s turbo inline six, switch off the traction control and line up with the other sport machines at the track’s entrance. I’m waved in. I take a deep breath and steadily squeeze the gas. I never feel more Western than when I slide through turns at High Plains Raceway outside of Byers, about 60 miles due east of Denver. Paralleling the engineer-straight, rural two-lane highway that delivers me to it, the bare-bones track is set within a 460-acre rectangle of softly undulating prairie, a sea that opens up just beyond the paddock area and crests at a long ridge two or so miles away. I often gaze at that sea. For me, the power of wilderness lies in its what-ifs: What if I pointed more of my life in this direction? What if I ignored everything for today and hiked out to that distant ridge and … just kept on going? Like the prairie that surrounds it, the track is a place where rules are lifted, a place where I can brush up against the delicious violence that lurks at the limits. Only on those fetterless ribbons of asphalt on the High Plains can I experience the polished ferocity of the engine as I howl down the straight, the seemingly asphaltripping grip of its brakes as I prepare for a sharp turn, the feral tightness of its chassis as we slide through a long corner at the limit of traction. A quality car or truck is a wild thing, cast in metal and steel. You feel its eagerness to run where it has the space to do so. And just like the wilderness beyond, the track is humbling. No matter how crazy fast it feels like I’m going, it’s only a matter of time before a better driver menacingly steals into my rearview, looking for a place to pass my slow, sorry ass. Oh, sure, out of masculine pride, I’ll sometimes try to stay with him for a handful of increasingly sloppy turns – at least until it becomes clear that if I keep up this pace, I’ll be spinning over the rough prairie, raising the dust cloud of shame. It does take a certain amount of grit to be out here – to put my car

“I NEVER FEEL MORE WESTERN THAN WHEN I SLIDE THROUGH TURNS AT HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY.” at risk and run the track at blurring speed, all the while being passed by drivers with superior skill. I get better by exploring the limits of my machine, something the broad and free space of the track allows. Will the car remain stable if I push it to 130 mph on the straight? How firmly can I squeeze the brakes in preparation for a corner and yet not lock up the front tires? How hard can I flog the engine out of the turns, knowing that after this we’ve got a hundred mile trip home? In finding the answers, I forge a deeper relationship with the car – no small thing, especially if you’re a Westerner who relies on a vehicle to deliver you through some pretty hairy landscapes. I learn to quickly spot and blow by distracted drivers, the most exasperating and dangerous element on the road, and to ride the challenge of turbulent

weather. What Westerner doesn’t in some way enjoy the drama of motoring through pounding rain or road-erasing snow? You might even say that increased skill behind the wheel allows for a more intense experience of the landscape. But those are thoughts for later, when the BMW is back in its garage and I’m off the track. For now, all that matters is my braking point for the sharp turn ahead and that delicious spot early in the corner, where I bury the throttle and launch myself into the gauzy horizon. Billie is a really sweet 6-year-old Black Lab/ Australian Shepherd mix who is great with people and other dogs. She was released to the shelter with her son, Spyder, who is a handsome, 4-year-old Lab/Australian Cattledog mix. He is also a really nice dog— easy with everyone. It would be nice for them to be adopted together, but it is not a requirement.

ZOE

Another “Zoe” at the shelter this week! This Zoe is a happy, friendly, scruffy, 11-year-old Terrier/Poodle mix who gets along well with people and other dogs. She deserves a loving home.

MAX

Handsome, outgoing, 9-year-old Siberian Husky. In keeping with his breed, Max is goodlooking and he likes to exercise, but he is not trustworthy off his leash.

BULLET

Large, friendly, handsome, 4-yearold, grey, shorthaired cat found at the Deaf Camp w/a pellet stuck in his cheek. FIV-positive— transmit-table to other cats, but NOT to people or other pets. A very special cat, he deserves a loving home. Must stay indoors.

ZOE

This sweet, mostly blind, 9-year-old miniature Schnauzer female was turned in to the shelter because her owner was ill and could no longer take care of her. Please consider giving this very deserving dog a home at this point in her life.

JIM

Outgoing, energetic, 12-yearold American Foxhound/Husky mix male. Good with people and other dogs. A retired sled dog. Came to the shelter with his sister Jackie (not shown). So handsome!

MOWGLI

Sensitive, 2-year-old husky who was retired early from dog sledding because he suffers from seizures. Fine with people + other dogs, but nervous with new people. Needs an understanding, loving home.

HUNTER

TIMBER

3.5-year-old medium-size Chow mix, found wandering around Aspen. Wary of strangers, but friendly once he knows + trusts you. Loves treats. Needs a responsible owner.

Soft-spoken, sleek, friendly, 10-year old Husky mix who gets along well with people and other dogs. She is a retired sled dog who deserves a comfortable, loving home.

VOYAGES

DESTINATION | NORTH AMERICA

by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WINTER WONDERLAND DURING THE first official week of winter, Mother Nature dished out a dizzying number of surprises. Snow and ice hit Michigan, Canada, New England and upstate New York. Some other eastern regions had temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Flooding in the South was blamed for at least four deaths while apparent tornadoes caused destruction in Arkansas. Here’s a collection of images showing how people in the U.S. and Canada dealt with the unsettled weather.

A man who said his name is “cotton” and described himself as a modern day “hobo” (he said they now call themselves freedom train riders) is photographed as he walked toward Interstate 40 where he hoped to hitch a ride and make it to Arkansas by the end of the day.

The window on an American Eagle plane is covered with snow before it is de-iced at O’Hare International Airport.

ABOVE MIDDLE: A gaggle of girls sled in Wichita, Kan. ABOVE: Snow blankets a neighborhood in Buffalo, N.Y. LEFT: An American Robin searches for food on a frozen tree in Augusta, Maine.

CHEERS TO HOLIDAY CHEER by JEANNE MCGOVERN

One of my favorite Christmas carols is “Winter Wonderland” – maybe it’s because we here in Aspen actually live in a winter wonderland. Or, perhaps it’s because the simple line, “later on, we’ll conspire, as we dream by the fire,” perfectly describes the way we long to spend our evenings.

Thankfully, there are myriad bars in which to do just this – especially at this time festive time of year. With that in mind, we set out on a tour of bars in Aspen and Snowmass in search of a warm fire, a cozy couch or a killer view. We sampled their specialties — from hot toddies and holiday drinks to classic cocktails and creative concoctions — and now we’re sharing them with you. Cheers, and Happy Holidays!

EGG ‘N’ GROG FROM NEST AT VICEROY SNOWMASS 1.5 ounces Jim Beam Red Stag Spiced 2 teaspoons egg beaters 1 ounce cream 1 ounce cinnamon/nutmeg syrup Combine all ingredients in shaker over ice. Shake vigorously. Strain over ice. Sprinkle with nutmeg. THE TASTE: A light and refreshing take on the traditional egg nog; perfect for a mid-day break from the slopes.

ALPINE CIDER RECIPE FROM VUE AT THE WESTIN SNOWMASS 2 ounces Myers Rum 1 ounce spiced syrup 7 ounces hot apple cider 1 large dallop cinnamon whipped cream Combine liquid ingredients, stir. Top with cinnamon whipped cream. THE TASTE: A classic hot cider, with just enough spice to warm you up after a day spent outside.

THE TEMERITY MULE FROM THE LIMELIGHT LODGE Vodka Ginger beer Raspberries, jalapenos, lime Muddle raspberries, sliced jalapeno and lime in a traditional copper cup. Top with crushed ice. Add a shot (or two) of Russian Standard Vodka. Fill glass with ginger beer and stir. THE TASTE: “We called it the Temerity Mule, not only for the obvious Highlands reference, but because temerity means bold and audacious,” said the Limelight’s Hunter Merten. “We think that’s exactly what a spicy, sweet and savory Mule is.”

Think the St. Regis Aspen is just for the buttoned-down holiday crowd? Think again. This winter, the luxe hotel at the base of Aspen Mountain is kicking the cocktail scene into high gear with a trio of new offerings. In the Shadow Mountain Lounge, an overhauled winter drink menu will keep you cozy at aprés-ski. Try executive sous chef Tobias Burkhalter’s homemade Glühwein (a spicy, slightly sweet, red wine, which is a tradition in Swiss and German households during the holidays; Burkhalter is Swiss). Usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, sugar and spices, the St. Regis’ version of the traditional Glühwein features a delightfully subtle infusion of cloves, allspice and star anise, as well as a refreshing splash of orange and lemon. For the kids, a hot chocolate bar promises to delight. Outside in the St. Regis Courtyard, tequila is the ticket. The recently carved Patron Ice Bar will be open daily from 4-7 p.m., serving up specialty drinks like the Spice up Your Cocoa, (Patron XO, Cayenne pepper and a lemon twist), CocoaCherry Bomb (Patron Anejo and Grenadine Hot Chocolate) and Santa’s Mocha (see recipe, this page). And, at Chef’s Club by FOOD & WINE, the Aspen cocktail scene is evolving again with a “Make Your Own Manhattan” menu. “Anthony Bohlinger was finding that many of his bar guests were befuddled by the number of options presented when ordering a Manhattan. Bourbon or Rye? American or Blended? Bitters? Garnish? Vermouth…,” says spokeswoman Danielle Penn. “So he put together a menu that tracks a guest’s preferences and when presented with their drink, they

SANTA’S MOCHA FROM THE ST. REGIS ASPEN 1.5 ounces Patron XO Dark Crushed candy cane Hot chocolate Mint leaf garnish THE TASTE: Spiked hot chocolate is a standard ski-town drink. But this one’s in a different league thanks to the Patron kick and the crushed candy cane twist. And it’s Santa-approved.

also receive the menu, signed and dated by their bartender. A guest can either keep track of what goes in to their own ‘perfect’ Manhattan, or come back again and again to make a few tweaks, like giving Spiced Chocolate bitters a try, or a rye instead of a bourbon.” So when it comes to cocktailing this winter, it seems there’s something for everyone at the St. Regis Aspen.

THE TASTE: “We want to feature as many fresh ingredients as possible — all by keeping the integrity of the spirits. We want to showcase creative cocktails that are approachable for anyone to enjoy,” say the bar staff at the Sky. The Viva Vida fits the bill perfectly.

SKY BLUEBERRY TEA FROM 39 DEGREES AT THE SKY HOTEL 3/4 ounce Grand Marnier 3/4 ounce Disarono Amarreto 1/4 ounce Pimm’s 1/2 ounce lemon juice 1 lemon wheel 3 blueberries First, steam snifter glass or pour hot water to warm up glass, then dump water. Add all ingredients listed above into the snifter glass. Served snifter glass resting on top of a double old-fashioned glass filled with quarter hot water. THE TASTE: Don’t let the name fool you, this is not your grandmother’s cup of tea. And that’s a good thing — after a long day on the slopes, you’re going to be sipping pretty with this cocktail.

“WE WANT TO FEATURE AS MANY FRESH INGREDIENTS AS POSSIBLE — ALL BY KEEPING THE INTEGRITY OF THE SPIRITS. WE WANT TO SHOWCASE CREATIVE COCKTAILS THAT ARE APPROACHABLE FOR ANYONE TO ENJOY.” — 39 DEGREES AT THE SKY HOTEL

EL BURRO FROM THE LIVING ROOM AT HOTEL JEROME 1.5 ounces Pura Vida Reposado Tequila 1/4 ounce Leopold Bros Absinthe 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice 1/2 ounce pineapple juice 1/2 ounce simple syrup Ginger Beer 1 dash Angostura bitters Tarragon leaf-helps to garnish the flavor in the drink Lime Combine tequila, absinthe, lime, pineapple and simple syrup in a pint glass. Add ice and shake until cold. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Top with ginger beer, dash of bitters and garnish with fresh sprig of tarragon. THE TASTE: This drink is a play off of the Mexican Mule. “In winter, it’s important to mirror the cold days with a refreshing drink,” says Christel Stiver, Living Room manager/sommelier. Adds Sam Gemus, Living Room bartender: “Instead of trying to create our own, we are bringing back and slightly modifying a classic. We are standing on the shoulders of great bartenders that came before us.”

COCONUT GINGER MARGARITA FROM BIA HOI IN SNOWMASS VILLAGE Tequila Coconut sour Cointreau Grand Marnier Combine all ingredients and serve over ice with a citrus fruit garnish. THE TASTE: “When I tried to order a different cocktail, a bartender at Bia Hoi in Snowmass Base Village turned me down and told me I wanted this one,” says Snowmass Sun editor Jill Beathard. “It still has the classic sour taste of a margarita, but the coconut makes it more refreshing, and the other ingredients make the flavor unique.”

THE GLORY OF AN OLDER WOMAN THE CHILEAN FILM “GLORIA” AT ACADEMY SCREENINGS

Paulina García stars in the Chilean film “Gloria,” showing Sunday, Dec. 29 in Aspen Film’s Academy Screenings series.

In making “Gloria,” Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio had a certain type of character in mind: a woman of his mother’s age, verging on elderly, but who continues to exhibit signs of youth — playfulness, fearlessness, a desire to take chances and move her life forward. It is the sort of character who might be overlooked in her own surroundings, and has certainly been mostly invisible in the land of mainstream movies.

IF YOU GO ... “GLORIA” Sunday, Dec. 29 at 3 p.m. Wheeler Opera House Aspen Film’s Academy Screenings series runs through Jan. 2, with screenings daily except Tuesday, Dec. 31

“The starting point was a feeling there was a movie there where a movie should not be, that would not exist otherwise, about someone who doesn’t deserve a film,” the 39-year-old Lelio said from Berlin, where he has lived for two years. “The first impulse was, Let’s make a film about my mother’s generation. An older lady who smiles, sings in the car. That might not sound daring or sexy, but that was the point for me. This is someone who should be a secondary character. There was an idea to transform this secondary character

into the main character.” It turns out, though, that even before Lelio had this semi-invisible character in the works, he had a somewhat overlooked actor in mind. For years Lelio had his eye on Paulina García. A respected stage actor and director, the 53-year-old García never got much attention from cinema’s casting directors. “She’d get little parts in a few films and on TV,” said Lelio, who began being noticed with his 2005 drama “The Sacred Family,” which earned awards at festivals from Miami to Buenos Aires to Geneva. “This is the first time someone asked her to make a main role in a movie. But I’ve been wanting to put her in a movie for years. Paulina is the heart of the project; I asked if I could write the film for her. And the entire project is contaminated by the idea of giving Paulina an absolute protagonist like she was never asked to do before.” “Gloria,” which will be shown on Sunday, Dec. 29 in Aspen Film’s Academy Screenings series, reflects

that long-simmering desire. The film is a showcase in the extreme. García is never off-screen, and the camera treats her tenderly as she encounters the big range of experiences — romance, family, sex, work — which allows her to exhibit the full gamut of emotions — loneliness, exuberance, heartache, anger, all of it overlaid with an essence of willfulness. It is not a flashy performance, but it is wellrounded and effective, and it earned García the Silver Bear for best actress at the Berlin Film Festival. Lelio had a co-writer on the script, Gonzolo Maza, but the dialogue was mostly improvised, a technique that centered “Gloria” even more around García and her performance. “She brought her mystery and her humanity and her understanding of what being a woman is,” Lelio said. “That’s something I can’t get completely, and that’s the point — I don’t want to get it. It’s our explorations, our intuitions of the character.” Instead of writing dialogue, Lelio spent his time building a relationship

by STEWART OKSENHORN

with García so she could most easily, inconspicuously, slip into the multiple dimensions of the character of Gloria. “Since I don’t give any written dialogue to the actors, they need to feel this trick — that shooting the film, after a lot of preparation, is about getting lost,” Lelio said. “I need to create a lot of trust with the actors. What we did was spend a lot of time together, talking about the film but also about books, others films, and going out drinking, dancing. We build this trust to make anything real that would happen later. They have to trust me and believe I will take care of them at the end.” Gloria, a 58-year-old office worker in the capital city of Santiago, has an active social life, and a hopeful one. She regularly spends her nights at dance events where the age is skewed

Gloria has toward life is the element I can relate to naturally, She’s someone who’s not afraid to take a step into the unknown. She’s taken a step toward life,” he said. “I guess I admire that in her. I’d like to be more like that. “The opposite of that attitude is Rodolfo. He’s trying, but he doesn’t have the tools, he doesn’t dare to walk into unknown territory. I like that ability in Gloria, to embrace life with everything that life brings, the good and the evil, and take all that and use it for her own personal evolution.” Lelio appreciates that he had all of Paulina García to work with. “The idea was to express all her talents — her presence, her body, her eyes, her voice were always there,” Lelio said. “She’s a great artist and an actress at the peak of her expressive tools. The film was about trying to find a way to

toward her own. She finds happiness in dancing, having a drink, meeting new people, and one night she makes a connection with Rodolfo (Sergio Hernández), a successful businessman some years older than Gloria. Where Gloria is bold and vulnerable, Rodolfo is timid, especially about moving away from his past and into the next phase of life. Gloria ultimately suffers the consequences of her lack of caution. Virtually all of Gloria’s existence — the dance clubs, the office job, the age — is foreign to Lelio. But he had no trouble understanding the essence of her character. “This characteristic or attitude

CAROLE BETHEUL/COURTESY SONY PICTURES CLASSICS

use all that. The object was to make her shine.” Given the filmmaker’s admiration for his star, and how central he made her to the project, could there be any doubt that “Gloria” would end on a rising note? In the final scene, Gloria is still dancing (and to a well-chosen tune from the disco era). Lelio doesn’t call it a triumphant tone, but he says there is an inspiring message in the way Gloria has absorbed all she has been through with her spirit undiminished. “It’s all about witnessing how someone can transform, in real time, her own energy, move from

one energetic place to another one, to another way to see the world and herself. Maybe a more free one or advanced or joyful or connected,” he said. “Maybe that’s why that ending provokes such a response. You, the audience, can do that same thing if you choose to.” REVIEWS OF OTHER FILMS SHOWING IN THE ACADEMY SCREENINGS SERIES (ALL FILMS ARE AT THE WHEELER OPERA HOUSE): “The Past” (Friday, Dec. 27 at 5:15): Writer-director Asghar Farhadi moves here from his native Iran, the setting for 2011’s magnificent, Oscar-nominated “A Separation,” to urban France. Still, the terrain is very similar — tense family dynamics continuously on the verge of full-on explosion. “The Past” is on a somewhat larger scale than the nearly claustrophobic “A Separation” — more characters entwined with one another, a broader city landscape, and of course, a greater sense of how past events weigh on the present. But “The Past” has lagging moments and feels overly long, troubles that did not afflict “A Separation.” Still, it is an absorbing look at a family in distress, and stands nominated for a Golden Globe for best foreign language film. “Blue Jasmine” (Saturday, Dec. 28 at 3): The one Woody Allen fans have been waiting two decades for. As with past masterpieces like “The Purple Rose of Cairo” and “Hannah and Her Sisters,” Allen takes a long, close, penetrating look at the female character here. This time it’s Jasmine, a fallen New York socialite reduced to moving to San Francisco to live with her sister (Sally Hawkins) and the sister’s orbit of boyfriends in a cramped apartment. Allen deftly moves from Jasmine’s past, privileged but shaky, to her increasingly delusional and disillusioned present. But the film is practically owned by Cate Blanchett, who gives the sort of performance that puts her in league with Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow as Allen’s muses. Blanchett is a good bet to earn a second Oscar, after taking best supporting actress honors for 2005’s “The Aviator.”

“All Is Lost” (Sunday, Dec. 29 at 5:30): Forget “Cast Away,” “127 Hours” and other movies of a man stranded alone to confront his fate. “All Is Lost” has little in common with its predecessors. Here, the outside world intrudes not at all as Robert Redford, in a damaged vessel, goes silently and methodically through the steps it takes to keep alive. Dialogue, drama and even overt philosophizing are largely absent. But it’s strangely compelling. “Dallas Buyers Club” (Monday, Dec. 30 at 5:30): Combining core indie elements with a mainstream story structure and emotions, “Dallas Buyers Club” tells of a Ron Woodruff, a hard-living, homophobic rodeo rider in 1980s Texas who contracts AIDS. Woodruff becomes an advocate for fellow patients who need hard-to-get medication, and brings to his new job the same recklessness that marked his old life. Matthew McConaughey’s portrayal of Woodruff is powerful enough to make audiences look at the actor in a new light. And Jared Leto, as a transgender woman named Rayon, matches him in acting chops. If there is a flaw, it is in the casting: Jennifer Garner as the sympathetic doctor doesn’t ring true. “Nebraska” (Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 3): Alexander Payne is on familiar ground. As with “Sideways” and “Citizen Ruth,” he is looking at characters whose flaws are hard to miss. And like “About Schmidt” and “Election,” “Nebraska” is set in the director’s native state. But here Payne arrives at a new place of storytelling and character development. His tale of quiet, grouchy, old Woody, traveling with his estranged son from Montana to Nebraska, where he was raised, has layers of sensitivity and humor. Bruce Dern earned the top acting prize at Cannes for his performance as Woody. “Tim’s Vermeer” (Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 5:45): The kind of documentary that makes you go “Wow.” Teller, half of the magic duo Penn & Teller, makes his directorial debut with the story of Tim Jenison, an inventor who believes he has figured out the technique used by the Dutch master Vermeer, then sets out to prove his theory by painting a Vermeer.

Some brokers succeed with dogged determination and relentless dedication, others with goodwill and friendly handholding, while a select few offer their analytical and financial backgrounds as a foundation from which to do business. And then there’s Andrew Ernemann, who offers all three. You can’t find a broker with a better resumé: 2013 Broker of the Year, recent president of the Aspen/Snowmass Board of Realtors, real estate broker for the City of Aspen, masters degree in engineering from Stanford, Aspen native, and (just for good measure) former U.S. Ski Team racer. At Sotheby’s, we’re impressed with his resumé, but more interested in what his clients are saying: that Andrew is a trusted advisor with a big-picture view of real investment and life in Aspen – an attentive confidant with a sophisticated approach to helping them negotiate the real estate market.

BOOK REVIEW

NOTEWORTHY

‘SURVIVAL SKILLS’ EARLY IN JEAN RYAN’S debut collection of stories, a woman in a wetsuit strokes an octopus’ head while it caresses her face with the tip of one arm. The scene illustrates one of the author’s favorite themes: We’re at our best, we humans, when we allow ourselves to interact intimately with the natural world — even if it’s just a matter of hanging out in, say, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Ryan, a Northern California author who describes herself as a “horticultural enthusiast,” has long been interested in what she describes as “the vulnerability and interdependency of all living things.” The intersection of flora, fauna and humanity informs the stories in “Survival Skills”; one narrator finds solace in Palm Springs’ citrus and eponymous trees, while another meditates on the resiliency of stinking

orchids. Ryan’s prose particularly shines when she’s describing animals — whether beagles, hummingbirds or tattletale parrots — and their relationship to people. Her first story, “Greyhound,” parallels a rescued race dog’s recovery with that of the narrator’s girlfriend, who is afflicted with an angst that explodes into eczema. The rash disappears as the dog is rehabilitated, but the narrator is wise enough not to take either for granted: “How long this state of grace will last,” she says, “is a question we don’t need answered.” These are stories about relationships — heterosexual and gay — told by patient narrators, often in their 40s and 50s. They’ve learned to look past the dramas of divorce and infidelity for the kind of comfort offered in the flash of a moth’s wing under moonlight, or in a spider rescued from a sink. In

“Migration,” a newly divorced woman finds healing in the form of a Toulouse goose that shows up at her Lake Tahoe cabin for a daily walk. The narrator in “Paradise” looks to a parrot for insight into a doomed relationship. Resignation informs many of these tales, but — just as powerfully — so does redemption. “There were countless mysteries,” Ryan writes, “observed or missed, unfolding every instant.” “Survival Skills” reminds readers of these mysteries, of how meaningful relationships extend beyond the romantic and the human. We can bond with a charismatic goose, with an enigmatic octopus, even with an irritating bird, and our life will be richer for it.
