by John Colson

An ode to a hopeful view of the coming year Out with the old, in with the new, That’s what the end of a year can do. Kind of like when you’re feeling out of breath And the coming minutes could mean life or death.

But forget all that, there’s a world out there That’s wondering if we, the U.S., ever will care About more than our own creature comforts and riches, Or whether we’ll remain imperialist sons a’ bitches.

HIT&RUN

Because the end of a year, any year, you see Brings a chance to do things better, or to be Just a little bit smarter, nicer, more clear Than you were at the end of the previous year. There are no guarantees that you’ll really be better, But like a blank page as you start on a letter, The chance is there, if only you’ll make The effort to think firmly about our earthly fate. You may not have noticed, but that year just passed Had a stench that could make even a rock face gasp. Oh, sure, we stuck with the president we’d got, But the process of Election 2012 was a shock. More money was spent than ever before, And we feared yet another result like Al Gore’s. But the polling seemed cleaner, more open, somehow, Though the Tea Party’s screeching about voter fraud now. So Obama’s our leader for another quadrennial, As we hope he is not just another perennial Disappointment, a sham, a nowhere guy Who forgets how he got where is, and why.

They see us like that, the world’s poor and frightful, Who believe all the ads that they see by the nightful, Which show that Americans, each and every one, Are gorgeous and wealthy, and we each own a gun. A lot of the world remains closer to the earth Then we in America, who despite our net worth Can’t quite understand, if we fail in life’s test, That we’ll thrive or we’ll perish along with the rest. As great forests and whales disappear from this place, And small plants and animals stare extinction in the face, It’s hard to explain to either man or child Our choices, our greed, our destruction of the wild. Some say we’re improving, we’re beginning to see That it’s our move to make, if there’s truly to be A future for humans on this planet, the Earth. FIVE THINGS TOP 5 THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT THE FRESH SNOW

A skier makes tracks on Ajax after one of several winter storms dropped plenty of fresh powder on the slopes, much to the delight of locals and visitors.

CHEERS & JEERS | To the crowds. We have a love-hate relationship with the throngs of people who come the Aspen over the holidays. So cheers to all of you who are strolling the streets with a smile on your face, and jeers to all of you who are honking your horns at them. For 2013, let’s strive for more cheers than jeers when it comes to the holiday crunch.

ASPEN TV PERSONALITY GETS BIG GIG WITH ESPN

When your own website defines you as a “bad-ass Australian beauty,” you’d better be one. It would seem that Ramona Bruland, a local TV personality who just got signed by ESPN to cover the upcoming Winter X Games in Aspen, as well as other X Games’ events, qualifies. The “Australian beauty” part speaks for itself. But is she a bad ass? “Maybe in a way that’s similar to the typical Aspen woman,” Bruland, 32, said with a laugh. “Especially if you look at it globally. I like to do crazy, off-thewall adventure activities.” Bruland pointed out that she’s into all sorts of stuff : from skiing and hang-gliding to dirt-bike riding and

LOCAL CHILD-CARE CENTER MAKES CHANGES IN WAKE OF CONNECTICUT SHOOTINGS

Aspen’s largest child care center has tightened down its security

and the Aspen public schools are discussing if changes are necessary at their campus in the wake of the Dec. 14 school shootings in Connecticut. “We have been talking about security for years, and there were always mixed feelings about how we should handle things at the Yellow Brick. But after (Dec. 14), that conversation pretty much changed for everybody,” said Shirley Ritter, director of Kids First, the city of Aspen’s child care arm. According to Ritter, security at the Yellow Brick Building — which is home to the Early Learning Center, Mare’s Playgroup and Aspen Mountain Tots — was tightened down. Namely, access to the building is now limited to one main entrance; previously, classrooms could be accessed from separate exterior doors. — Jeanne McGovern

How often does that happen? The film focuses on the work of James Balog, who got a master’s degree in science in the 1970s, but instead took up the more visceral work of outdoor photography in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. He has achieved great success with his photographs of wildlife. Some of his images of endangered species were used for a series of U.S. postal stamps, and later, he undertook a project to document the world’s tallest trees. That’s not something you can do in a studio, nor is it something he did simply by standing at a safe distance. The images he created required both climbing skills, acquired in mountains but adapted to trees, as well as mastery of photographic technology. I first heard about Balog’s new project in 2009, when he spoke at the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival. The notion that these are extraordinary times is reinforced by a synopsis of a nine-hour sequence capturing a giant glacier calving off an ice field the size of Manhattan. As the ice, taller than the Empire State Building, finally slides into the water, its fall feels cataclysmic, and Balog, as well as the various speakers introduced in the film, assure us that it felt that way to them, too. Along with the rapidly vanishing ice of the Arctic Ocean, a correlation (and probable causation) seems inescapable between the diminishing ice field and rising greenhouse gases. Men wearing 1890s work hats pose before descending a mine shaft.

HATS AND HARDHATS One of my favorite mining era photographs (above) shows a shift

of miners poised to descend into darkness for a day of dangerous toil. I always feel taken by their positive expressions emboldened by mustaches, fashionable for the day. But I noticed something else while recently scanning my photo collection: those miners undertook their work without hardhats. Men in those days did not leave home without a hat, and you certainly would not venture into the Aspen underground without one. In addition to the temperature, a constant 58 degrees, dripping water and dust also plagued a hatless miner. But how did they manage without a hardhat? Tunneling through solid rock was costly, so tunnel dimensions were the bare minimum for passage. The preponderance of Cornish miners whose stature was closer to 5 feet than 6 feet meant that an adequate tunnel height was just more than 5 feet. A taller man walked hunched or risked hitting his head. Tunnels that were not

above in a mine shaft dropped tools or timber on those unsuspecting below. Rocks dislodged from cavernous ceilings and landed on unprotected heads.

Other than a few leather hats, similar to early football helmets, hardhats were rare in the mining world for many years. Although the military helmets of World War I suggested a solution for miners, the use of a hardhat in any industrial setting did not take hold until the 1930s. Underground miners went without hardhats until the 1940s when fiberglass hats took over the market. Perhaps because 1890s miners wore out their hats on tunnel ceilings or perhaps because hats were the most important fashion item, Aspen’s clothing stores all featured hats. One of the larger stores, Kobeys on downtown Hyman Avenue, had an entire hat department where shoppers chose from many styles, materials and colors. There were linen hats, straw hats, crusher hats, work hats, stiff hats/soft hats, wide-brim hats, fedora style hats and Stetsons. The dress hat of choice was the fedora. Prices for dress hats ranged from (today’s dollars) 22.50 to 70. Work hats were not inexpensive, most sold for around 15. Bargain hats, and hats for boys, were straw and cost about the same as for a dozen of farm fresh eggs. The safety of a standard issue hardhat would have held some attraction, but a discerning look at miners in the century-old photo suggests they may have preferred a hat that made a more fashionable, personal statement. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. He began sharing folklore while teaching for Aspen Country Day School and Colorado Mountain College. Now a tourist in his native town, he views it with historical perspective. Reach him at redmtn@schat.net.

THE OBSERVATION lounge in a Colorado Midland passenger train was a luxurious way to travel around the turn of the century. Local newspapers reported in 1911 that the Midland was preparing to take a group of Aspen picnickers up the Fryingpan River, saying, “There was good reason to celebrate. APPLE MACBOOK PRO First of all, the new Apple Macbook pro has to be seen as an investment or a really fun toy; otherwise it’s just a lot of money to throw at a computer. Lucky for Apple addicts, with its new Retina display, this computer can be both. The display, which is at 200 dpi versus the standard 72 dpi of most monitors, caused a friend of mine to say it’s “kind of life changing.” It gives the user the amazing ability to edit photos, watch and record movies, and supplies plenty of horsepower for any type of multimedia editing — and, of course, for frequent posting to Facebook. — Ryan Slabaugh

BRECKENRIDGE BOURBON WHISKEY ONE DAY LAST WEEK, my co-manager Ryan and I decided we needed to hide in the lounge and try a sip of Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey. We had just wrapped up “one of those days.” I was pleasantly surprised when I took a taste of this bourbon whiskey that is created with Colorado snowmelt. It has a smooth finish and has no kick. I really enjoyed it because it is smoky, yet not ashy. 2013 may be a year of whiskey for me, as I am acquiring a taste for it. Happy New Year. WINEINK

WORDS to DRINK BY

by KELLY J. HAYES

WINES FOR THE COMING YEAR THIS IS THE TIME of year when pundits use their prime print real estate to write about what trends will be lighting up the New Year. It can be a useful exercise, but with wine, a timeless pursuit where things evolve on the whims of Mother Nature, it may not be as relevant as say, predictions about fashion or new car styles. Still there is much to look forward to in 2013 in the world of wine and spirits. Indulge me if you will while I list a few of the things that I KELLY J. would like to point my HAYES headlights toward as we move into another year. This will be the year when we begin to see the first wines of the 2012 vintage in California start to be released. This past fall had near universal acclaim from growers and vintners and it is expected that for years, if not decades, we will be enjoying the wines from 2012. I am especially interested in trying some of these wines in barrel this spring when I visit Napa Valley. About that visit. I have been invited to participate in the 2013 Napa Symposium for Professional Wine Writers in February at the Meadowood Resort. This conference, which brings together many of the world’s most talented wine scribes, coincides with both the induction of the current class of the Napa Vintners Hall of Fame and the Premiere Napa Wine Auction. Obviously I am over the moon in anticipation of all three events, especially the ceremony where wine writers Robert Parker Jr. and Frank Shoemakers, union leader Cesar Chavez and winemaker Merry

Edwards will be immortalized in relief at the Culinary Institute of America. Closer to home, I am excited about spending more time under the wine wall at Element 47 in the coming year. Jonathan Pullis, wine director at The Little Nell, finally has a showcase displaying a comparative few bottles from the resort’s expansive collection. The new design is elegant and efficient, and provides a welcoming place to have a glass of wine. This year in wines expect there to be a greater emphasis on sweet, lighter wines with lower alcohol levels as the industry responds to the drinking public’s focus on health. Look for sparklers like Moscato, light in body and with a just a ouch of sweetness, to find their way onto wines by the glass lists. These sparkling wines will also be used in a number of wine based cocktails as the cocktail movement continues to evolve and become more inclusive for drinkers who like spirits mixed with wines.

SOMM’S SELECTION Sugar levels in red wines have also struck a cord of late, particularly with younger drinkers. Wines like “Apothic” and “Red Velvet” have seen exponential growth in sales in the last year and I wouldn’t be surprised if a sparkling Shiraz from Australia didn’t find its way to these shores. In terms of regions I expect that we will be seeing more still wines from Portugal. Vinho Verde white wines are being joined by new red still wines being released by makers who have been known for year for producing great Ports. Grapes like Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are being used in still wines to great effect. All in all, 2013 looks to be another great year in the glass. Looking forward to sharing it with you. Kelly J. Hayes lives in the soon-tobe-designated appellation of Old Snowmass with his wife, Linda, and a black Lab named Vino. He can be reached at malibukj@aol.com.

LINCOLN MANUEL Justice Snow’s has established itself as the go-to spot in town for cocktails. Under the tutelage of Joshua-Peter Smith, the bar has developed a reputation as place of sophistication and taste. Now Lincoln Manuel has been charged with raising the bar with the wine program. Going into 2013 expect a greater emphasis on creating a more “global” list. It was funny that Lincoln chose this wine to highlight as the song “Reunion” by M83 has been burning on my play list of late. I guess it was just meant to be. — K.J.H. “As we started to update the wine list for this season, one of the first things I chose was this Malbec to pour by the glass. Malbec is still riding a wave of popularity and we hadn’t previously offered one. The Reunion is composed of 100 percent single vineyard estate fruit from the sustainably farmed family-run RJ Vineyards in Valle de Uco, Mendoza. Thirty percent of the wine was fermented in second-year French oak barrels, 70 percent in stainless steel and the blend then aged in cement tanks. The result is a bright wine with great red fruit and plums up front and a hint of chocolate on the finish.” — Lincoln Manuel, wine director, Justice Snow’s

FOOD MATTERS

PINE CREEK COOKHOUSE: ALPINE CUISINE AT ITS FINEST I’M NOT SURE why Pine Creek Cookhouse has not been in my dining rotation these last few years. Perhaps I believed it was too much effort? Or that there had been few times special enough to deserve the visit? But I’ve been amiss in my hasty choice to snub it. Because what I rediscovered on a recent visit is that Pine Creek Cookhouse still captures AMIEE WHITE everything special that is BEAZLEY Aspen: nature, sport and fine food — and wraps it all into one. Of course people already know that the “getting there” is half the fun of Pine Creek, but they would be mistaken if they think that replaces the quality of the meal itself? Surely the free walk, or pay to sleigh or cross-country ski — which begins at the end of Castle Creek Road and leads to the restaurant sitting in the shadow of Star Peak — is invigorating, fun and helps you feel as though you’ve earned your meal, but it does not need to make up for any lack of excellence on the part of this kitchen. I was delighted and somewhat surprised at the superior meal that is served in this remote location. Seeing that everything at Pine Creek Cookhouse is packed in at the beginning of the day, there is a chance taken with the constancy of what is offered. I’ve had experiences at other restaurants with this challenge, and none have risen to meet this challenge like Pine Creek. Pine Creek’s meals, several of which I sampled, not only were solid in ingredients and preparation, but as well in invention and execution. Simply put: You’d never know you were eating in a backcountry cabin ... far, far, far off the beaten path. Nor was our experience lacking in service. Our waiter, knowledgeable and friendly, treated our small group like the celebrities who often dine at Pine Creek. And everyone from the ski hut to the bar was happy to be there to share in our experience.

No one is happier to be at Pine Creek Cookhouse than the executive chef himself, Christopher Keating. After years in the kitchens of The Little Nell and Hotel Jerome, some of his followers were surprised to hear of Keating’s move out of the main stage of downtown Aspen and into a role, well, out in the boondocks. But Keating has invigorated this menu with all the lessons of those other fine dining establishments and his joy of place, of his staff and his position is evident. “This is truly American Alpine cuisine at its finest,” he says. He talks highly of the people who help him source so many of the local ingredients — elk, lamb, greens — which flavor his menu, but also of the experience of being at Pine Creek. The skiing he enjoys every day just to get to his kitchen, the stories and experiences of those in the “all-star cast” he has surrounded himself with. So if you are teetering on the edge of a visit to Pine Creek Cookhouse, don’t make the same mistake I made and wait years to return. Do it now. The best of the Aspen experience is waiting for you at a mere 9,700 feet.

THE RESOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED A DOZEN ASPEN NEWSMAKERS PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL TRADITION OF PROMISING SELF-IMPROVEMENT IN THE NEXT 365 DAYS … OR NOT by Amanda Charles

it has come to my attention that there are two types of New Year’s resolutions one chooses to make at the start of a fresh year: one of optimistic intent with full potential to come true, and the other, one of little or no meaning kept on standby just in case someone asks. The surveys say about 40 to 45 percent of us usually make New Year’s resolutions — mostly because they hold traditional importance and give us something to work toward. Still, while we often admit to being open to change and new beginnings in our everyday lives, it is somewhat disappointing to learn that in the long run we actually spend more time breaking our resolutions than making them.

Last year, the surveys also say only 8 percent of us were successful in achieving our resolutions, yet we continue to enter each year with newfound promises and goals, which begs the question, “Why?” Because maybe deep down we know a little selfimprovement could do us some good, or maybe we just like to create optimism for a better tomorrow, or maybe it’s just the pressure of tradition. Either way, because it’s that time of year again, and because most of us are going to make resolutions regardless if we win or lose, I sought out some of the 2012 newsmakers in Aspen to kick off the year in a positive light. Here are their 2013 New Year’s resolutions:

ACROSS THE GREAT MUSICAL DIVIDE 2012: THE YEAR IN STEWY’S EARS

Tift Merritt, “Traveling Alone”

YES, WE ARE UNDOUBTEDLY EXPERIENCING a time of extreme political division in this great nation of ours. But that’s nothing compared to how severely we are split musically. Check out the blizzard of end-ofyear lists, and the consensus is that there is little consensus at all. While there are a handful of albums that get repeated mentions, the fact is we are all living between our own private earbuds, getting off on our own different slices of the musical spectrum. (If there is one thing we might all agree on, it is that Rolling Stone is hopelessly out of touch as a tastemaker, having tabbed Bruce Springsteen’s middling “Wrecking Ball” as the No. 1 album of 2012.) Bully for that, I say. Whatever monumental changes have hit the recording business over the years, they haven’t decimated the creative spirit. On the contrary, the output of music is enormous, the diversity is

30

A S P E N T I M E S W E E K LY

endless, the spirit of experimentation is thriving. My desk is piled high with CDs, my inbox overflowing with downloads. And in my car, my teenage daughter commandeers the radio, putting on “her station,” and exposing me to a separate musical realm I would not have ventured into. The experience has not been unenjoyable. Here’s how 2012 sounded to me, a baker’s dozen of my favorites. I invite further suggestions.

FRANK OCEAN, “CHANNEL ORANGE” We can finally stop waiting for D’Angelo to give us a worthy followup to 2000’s “Voodoo.” Instead of the next D’Angelo album, we get the first album from 25-year-old singer Frank Ocean, a member of the California hip-hop collective Odd Future. “Channel Orange” exists in the same neo-soul realm

as “Voodoo” — easy on the ears, but also edgy and out-there. Like D’Angelo, Ocean has a once-a-decade seductiveness to his voice. But where D’Angelo stayed more or less entirely in bedroom mode, Ocean ventures out into the world, exploring class, gender and spirituality, and mixing a wide vocabulary of sounds, from psychedelic rock to electro-funk, into his groove. Let’s hope the parallel with D’Angelo ends with the neo-soul genre; I don’t want to wait a decade for Ocean’s next pronouncement.

GRIZZLY BEAR, “SHIELDS” To my ears, this is the sound of rock music in 2012. “Shields,” the fourth album by the Brooklyn quartet Grizzly Bear, unquestionably pushes the boundaries in sound and song structure; you really don’t know what’s around the bend — a freak-folk break, a bluesy guitar hook, crunchy chords. drummer. “Fear Fun” should do plenty to establish an identity of his own. The first album released under the Father John Misty, “Fear Fun” is sweet and dark and poetic, with shades of old rock ‘n’ roll, but even more of the sense of urgency to plunge into the unknown future. Father John Misty makes his Aspen debut Friday, Jan. 4, at Belly Up.

Radiohead, and modern songwriters like Josh Ritter, as primary influences. There is a Radiohead cover (“Kid A”), but more telling is the opening track, the original “Movement and Location,” which is promisingly Radiohead-esque. Yes, humor, virtuosity, emotion, irony and artistic vision can coalesce.

ALABAMA SHAKES, BOB DYLAN, “TEMPEST” If “Duquesne Whistle” doesn’t put a smile on your face ... well, your problem. Dylan’s smile, as he slips into a Louis Armstrong-esque croak, is enormous. The song is about nothing other than Dylan himself — at 71, on his 35th studio album, Dylan retains the force of a train: “I wonder if that old oak tree’s still standing/ That old oak tree, the one we used to climb.” Oh yeah, still standing tall and mighty, and not just in this chugging, joyous rocker. Dylan can access the dark (“Pay in Blood”), the tender (“Roll on John,” an homage to John Lennon), and the epic, with the 14-minute, 45verse (!!) title track about the Titanic.

Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange”

And then they’ll throw in a catchy, tuneful segment that brings you back to something familiar and lovely.

WIDESPREAD PANIC, “WOOD” After making some of the best studio albums to come out of the jam-band world, then seemingly giving up on the idea of the studio as a creative outlet with a string of hohum efforts, Widespread Panic goes into live-album mode and delivers a beauty. “Wood” documents the Georgia sextet’s first true acoustic tour, and they use the opportunity for some serious reinvention. The twodisc set brings out new sides of Panic — most notably, the acoustic picking of guitarist Jimmy Herring and the wizardry of keyboardist Jojo Hermann — as they reinterpret old favorites and break out a few new covers, including John Lennon’s “The Ballad of John and Yoko.” Bonus for local listeners: four tracks from “Wood” were recorded at Belly Up Aspen.

DAVID BYRNE & ST. VINCENT, “LOVE THIS GIANT” Two off beat artists manage to merge their talents seamlessly in this crisp, funky, original concoction. The sounds — especially the horn section, the foundation here, used in such a unique way — are so ear-turning that you can miss the statement about the environment that “Love This Giant” is making.

TIFT MERRITT, “TRAVELING ALONE” A lot of people heard the greatness of Joni and Emmylou in the early work of North Carolina-bred singersongwriter Tift Merritt. I failed to hear that until “Traveling Alone,” Merritt’s fifth album. Producer Tucker Martine (the Decemberists, My Morning Jacket) brings in players like guitarist Marc Ribot and violinist Rob Moose to provide an avant backdrop. But the star is Merritt’s evocative, country-folk voice (yes, shades of Emmylou) and superb songs.

LEONARD COHEN, “OLD IDEAS” On his first studio album in eight years, the 78-year-old Cohen meditates on mortality and death. He seems to know something about the subject the rest of us do not; Cohen appears to have a direct pipeline to God. His spare poetry, fragile voice and minimalist production strip away all that is extraneous, leaving only the holy. But left intact, in songs like “Show Me the Place” and the sexy “Different Sides,” is an abundant sense of humor and playfulness.

BEACH HOUSE, “BLOOM” On their fourth album, the Maryland-based duo of instrumentalist Alex Scally and French-born singer Victoria Legrand reminds me of the ’80s — but leaving out all the dreadful parts, and saving just the best of the synthesizers, the showiness, the unapologetic melodicism. Legrand’s voice is dreamy, or what you’d hope to hear in your dreams.

GLEN HANSARD, “RHYTHM AND REPOSE” Having done the rock band (the Frames), the folky duo (Swell Season) and taking a quick break to become a movie star (2006’s “Once”), Irishman Glen Hansard, at 42, got around to the solo thing. “Rhythm and Repose” captures all the passion that Hansard put into his previous projects. Some of the songs here are great (the ambivalent “Maybe Not Tonight,” “The Storm, It’s Coming”) and some are merely good, but you’re never left with a doubt about Hansard’s desire to make you see and feel something.

PUNCH BROTHERS, “WHO’S FEELING YOUNG NOW?”

FATHER JOHN MISTY, “FEAR FUN” Josh Tillman, aka Father John Misty, downplays his involvement in Seattle superstar band Fleet Foxes, in which Tillman contributed some parts to the later albums and toured as their

Mandolinist Chris Thile and company take yet another big step into the future of the string quintet. Bill Monroe and bluegrass, and even progressive acoustic groups of the past like New Grass Revival, fade to the background as Punch Brothers look to

“BOYS & GIRLS” Resurrecting old soul, as so many singers have done of late, can seem like a fairly easy thing to do, and my first reaction to this debut album by Alabama Shakes was, “Too easy.” But on numerous listens since then, what emerged was the way the band was shaking up the soul genre, with just enough thrashing and pounding. And really, can you hold it against singer Brittany Howard that her voice is too easy to like? “Boys & Girls” is very good; I expect Alabama Shakes to produce something truly great their next time out.

DONALD FAGEN, “SUNKEN CONDOS” Between Steely Dan and solo projects, singer-keyboardist Donald Fagen has released six albums in the past 22 years. Which might be a paucity, but in Fagen’s case it seems just right. It leaves just enough time that when we do get something new from Fagen, we are reminded of how singular a niche of the pop-jazz-rockfusion spectrum he has invented. “Sunken Condos” is Fagen in full — the studio as a device to achieve sonic perfection. It might be too much cool precision if we were exposed, say, every two years. But Fagen’s last album was 2006’s “Morph the Cat,” and after a six-year gap, “Sunken Condos” sounds ... well, perfect.

AND A BUNCH MORE REASONS TO WALK ON DOWN TO YE OLDE CORNER RECORD STORE: Rufus Wainwright, “Out of the Game”; the Shins, “Port of Morrow”; Bettye Lavette, “Thankful n’ Thoughtful”; the Debo Band, “The Debo Band”; Andrew Bird, “Break It Yourself”; Calexico, “Algiers”; Spiritualized, “Sweet Heart, Sweet Light”; Dr. John, “Locked Down”; Damien Jurado, “Maraqopa”; Vijay Iyer Trio, “Accelerando”; the Lumineers, “The Lumineers”; the Grateful Dead, “Dave’s Picks Vol. 2: Dillon Stadium, Hartford, CT, 7/31/74”; These United States, “These United States”; Patterson Hood: “Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance”; Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, “Here.” A S P E N T I M E S . COASTAL MAINE: HIGHPOINTS AND HISTORY

SOME OF THE trails at Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine are not for the timid. They traverse narrow rock ledges high above the forest floor and climb vertical crevices on hand-hewn steps of granite. Some cliff faces are affixed with iron rungs for climbing. Always in the background is the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean and a scattering of emerald Islands — the Porcupines, the Cranberries — where sailing yachts swing at anchor and huge cruise ships steam in for a landfall at Bar Harbor. My son, Tait, 19, opted for a semester swap from Prescott College in Arizona last fall. Curious to see what the East had to offer, this child of the arid West enrolled at College of the Atlantic, a small, intimate and picturesque campus right on the ocean’s edge. As doting parents, my wife Lu and I escorted Tait to his new school at Bar Harbor, an archetypal New England destination that I had visited with my family at age 11. We wanted a vacation, so the three of us explored coastal Maine together. Camping along the way, we stopped at Camden, Maine, one of the most charming seaports on the East Coast TOP: Iron rungs are affixed to vertical cliff faces, like on the “Precipice Trail” on Cadillac Mountain, giving Acadia National Park a “Chutes and Ladders” kind of experience. BOTTOM: The advanced trails at Acadia National Park in Maine provide some thrills with vertical exposure on granite faces. The Atlantic Ocean is always at your feet.

that is dubbed “the most beautiful town in Maine.” White clapboard historical vacation homes are set off by the blue sea, blue sky, and a harbor filled with exotic powerboats and sailing ships. Camden’s aesthetic charm reflects an atmosphere steeped in early American history. First settled in 1771–1772 by James Richards, who built a home at the mouth of the Megunticook River, Camden became a rendezvous point and encampment for American revolutionary soldiers who battled the British in 1779. Shipyards, ACADIA NATIONAL PARK is open all logging and year. Information is available at park ice cutting headquarters all year and at Hulls Cove made Camden Visitor Center from April 15 through a prosperous October. Battie, a rounded summit of glacially carved granite slabs, gives a dramatic overview of the town and the harbor, TOP: Bar Harbor, Maine, is an attractive destination for ships of all sizes. — a summer mountain biking mecca and winter ski resort. A sea kayak tour of the Camden harbor offered us a far different perspective looking up on the abrupt mountains. And when a full moon rose out of the sea it cast its silver shimmers on sparkling waves with serene beauty. From Camden we drove north to Bar Harbor through historic towns and thick forests of mixed deciduous and evergreens. Once we got Tait situated in his housing, we spent three days exploring Acadia National Park, one of the earliest parks in the system, thanks to land grants from robber barons who discovered the setting in the late 1800s. The town’s register includes J.D. Rockefeller, Joseph Pulitzer, William Proctor, Mary Cadwalader Jones, Frederick Vanderbilt, George Vanderbilt and Evelyn Walsh McLean, each of whom built magnificent “cottages” overlooking the sea. Scenic carriage trails crisscross Mt. Desert Island, on which Acadia National Park is located, attracting cyclists who enjoy designated routes away from car traffic. Many miles of hiking trails also bisect the island, threading over and between Cadillac Mountain and Mt. Dorr, smooth granite summits bedecked with lush foliage. It is said that the summit of Cadillac Mountain catches the first touch of sun on the North American continent. Two trails in particular, “The Ladder” and “Precipice,” appealed to us for their black diamond rating, and we were rewarded with cliff climbs and ledge walks. Though Bar Harbor can feel overrun as cruise ships disgorge throngs of tourists who crowd sidewalks while browsing boutiques, T-shirt shops and knickknack nooks, the natural beauty of the park is right on the town boundary, as is the sea. Whether in Camden or Bar Harbor, watching the fog roll in or catching a rainbow arching over a bay, it is obvious why the magnetic draw of coastal Maine works its spell on so many thousands of visitors. Here lies a palpable sense of history amid a natural setting that frames the Atlantic from spectacular highpoints. Paul Anderson is a freelance writer who lives in the Roaring Fork Valley. The SOCIAL SIDE of TOWN

by MARY ESHBAUGH HAYES

HOTEL JEROME REOPENS THE HOTEL JEROME reopened just in time for the holidays with several soft openings and then two big openings for the public on Dec. 19 and 20. We had all been so worried that the new owners would have taken a Victorian gem and turned it into Anywhere, U.S.A., but instead we found that MARY the remodel is in good ESHBAUGH HAYES taste and several spaces really work that never had been successful before. The flow through the hotel is much better than it was and a beautiful portrait of Jerome B. Wheeler — having been the original builder of the hotel — hangs over the living room fireplace. BOOK REVIEW

‘THE BACKCOUNTRY DIARIES’ ANGELA BURKE, a former resident of Grand and Summit counties, recently published her latest novelette, titled “The Backcountry Diaries: A Christmas Rendezvous.” The story takes place in the Fraser Valley, including specific locations certain to evoke memories for those familiar with it. The story may hit closer to home for some, as the author dives into relationships common to mountain town living. It’s timely in that it takes place during the holidays. “The Backcountry Diaries: A Christmas Rendezvous” is a quick read that captures the essence of living and loving in a mountain town — where some treasure free spirit

and the pursuit of happiness more than commitment. The characters in the story go through a defining experience that resonates with hope and positive vibes, perfect for the holiday season. Burke now lives in Boulder with her family, though they have a second home in Tabernash. This story was dreamed up by the author while sitting at the Winter Park Pub after a day of skiing.
