Ullr Nights on Elk Camp If you’re looking for something fun to do with your family that everyone can enjoy, Ullr Nights is the place to be. Activities included with a gondola ride are: • Bonfire (s’mores and hot chocolate available for purchase) • Sledding (sleds and tubes provided) • Playing on the Viking Ghost Ship • Ski and snowboard session park • Ice skating and rentals (rink not yet completed) • Live music • Indoor kids’ activities In addition, snowbike and snowshoe tours are offered for an additional fee. Dinner is available in the Elk Camp Restaurant, which just opened at the start of the 2012-13 season. The gondola runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. every Friday night through March 29. A Fabulous Aspen Riverfront Home…

Jill Beathard | In Snowmass Naturalist Charlie Oshinsky talks about squirrel tracks on Jan. 18 during a nighttime snowshoe tour. The tours are offered every Friday night at the top of Elk Camp Gondola.

Take a walk in the woods with ACES Coinciding with Ullr Nights, the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies is offering a guided nighttime snowshoe tour every Friday night in the gentle terrain of the woods surrounding Rayburn’s Pond. ACES also offers tours during the day, but the evening walk is a chance to see the tracks and signs of local wildlife and experience the mountain in a different way. “During the day, it’s totally chaotic, especially on the ski slopes when there’s thousands of people here every day and crossing the ski slopes is kind of a difficult thing to navigate,” said ACES naturalist Charlie Oshinsky. “What I like most about being out here at night is it just feels more distant. You just feel like you’re in the wilderness a little bit more.”

This passive solar home is nestled quietly on the Roaring Fork River in Woody Creek. Located 10 minutes from Aspen you will have the best of all worlds. Wonderfully private without sacrificing the world-class amenities of Aspen. It features 6 bedrooms, 5 baths, 5,784 sq ft – room for family and guests. $4,950,000

TOM MELBERG 970.379.1297 tmelberg@rof.net

Tours leave from the top of the gondola at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 and include gondola ride, snowshoes and guide. Purchase at any lift ticket office; leave about a half hour to purchase a ticket and ride up the gondola before your tour takes off.

10 Late Winter In Snowmass 2013

What’s new When it comes to the ultimate skiing adventure for the entire family, it’s hard to beat Snowmass ski area. And according to the ratings for the 2012-13 season by various magazines and reader surveys throughout the country, there’s a reason why the mountain ranks so high. As a way to keep the mountain up to par with locals and guests alike, improvements are always made to make the experience that much more enjoyable, and this year is no exception. Here’s some new stuff you’ll see on the mountain this year:

ELK CAMP RESTAURANT The new restaurant at the top of the Elk Camp Gondola was just finished in time for this ski season, and with it comes some new on-mountain activities. The gondola runs on Friday nights now so families can access a sledding hill, playground and more at the top (see previous story).

BURNT MOUNTAIN EXPANSION The Aspen Skiing Co. worked this year to thin trees on Burnt Mountain east of Long Shot, adding 230 acres to its skiing terrain. The expansion boosts Snowmass’ terrain to 3,362 acres, the second-largest ski area in Colorado. The backcountry-like terrain is patrolled for safety and is accessed by a short hike from Long Shot. Check signs to make sure the terrain is open and safe for skiing.

SNOWMAKING IMPROVEMENTS This change might not be as obvious, but Skico made an agreement last summer with Snowmass Water and Sanitation to use water from Ziegler Reservoir to make snow. Using stored water as opposed to pumping it from Snowmass Creek allowed the company to make snow when conditions were most optimal.

Jill Beathard | In Snowmass The Westin Snowmass resort, formerly the Silvertree Hotel, opened its doors this November after an extensive renovation. The lobby is shown here, looking out onto the ski slopes in early December.

In town Changes have been happening in town as well. Base Village has finally found an owner/developer once more. The deal, transferring ownership once again to Related Cos., closed in late September, and some minor improvements were completed in time for this ski season. Use the completed Arrival Center to drop off skiers by car and to access lifts from the bus stop. The Westin and Wildwood are newly renovated hotels on the mall. Whether you’re staying in one or not, there are many amenities to check out, including a slopeside bar, new hotel restaurants and new and old retail stores. Local Rebels and Snowmass Sports have new locations on the Mall, and women’s fashion store N.J. Boutique opened next to Daly Bottle Shop in December.

Courtesy photo The Elk Camp Restaurant, located right at the top of the gondola, was completed just in time for opening day of ski season.

Another new retail store is Cuzco Alpaca in the Snowmass Center, which primarily sells hats, scarves and other goods made from that animal’s fleece. You’ll also find some new dining options. In addition to the Ranger Station, Vue Lounge and Snowmass Kitchen in the Westin and the Bar at Wildwood, Snowmass Bakery just opened a second location in Base Village, and Slice pizzeria opened upstairs in the same building over the holidays.

NASTAR national championships

return to Snowmass Staff report | In Snowmass

This spring, Snowmass Village will host the national championships for the National Standard Race, the largest public grassroots ski race program in the world. Skiers from approximately 45 states, ranging in age from 3 to 90, will converge on the resort to compete for national titles in various divisions. Snowmass Village was the first resort to host the organization’s national championship when it changed to a large, public event format in 1998, according to NASTAR. The event celebrates the sport of alpine racing and serves as a reunion for the top recreational racers in the country. The competition overlaps Bud Light Spring Jam. To qualify for the championships, NASTAR racers earn a top ten national ranking, top five state ranking or top five resort ranking in their age and ability category.

End on the right note Celebrating the slopes on Closing Day is an annual ritual

Michael Appelgate | In Snowmass

Snowmass Sun file A team flies its homemade sled down the slope in Schneetag, an annual closing-day event on Snowmass. Teams of four are invited to build a craft and attempt to sail it across a pond.

Nobody wants the ski season to end. On that day, however, the season goes out with a bang. When April 14 rolls around, the lifts up Snowmass will come to a halt, symbolizing the end of the winter ski season. Similarly, the other ski resorts will close within a week of that date. Throughout those days, the resorts will hold various events to celebrate the ski season. Snowmass holds “Schneetag,” in which teams of four create a theme and pilot down a slope and attempt to float across a pond on a craft. Live music and other special activities also highlight closing day. Check the Snowmass Sun for an updated list of events if you’re in town in April.

Closing dates Buttermilk: April 7 Aspen Mountain: April 14 Snowmass: April 14 Aspen Highlands: April 21

Rocky Mountain Rob Another longtime local you’ll see playing in Snowmass this season is Rob Tepper, aka Rocky Mountain Rob. Tepper, a Basalt resident, moved to the Roaring Fork Valley from Minneapolis in the mid 1980s and lived in a school bus in the Buttermilk parking lot. Playing Friday evenings at the Edge at Timberline Condominiums, this is his fourth year playing in a Snowmass venue. He calls his style of music “harmonica blues.” “My show’s totally unique around here,” he said. “Most people are used to hearing guitar and western music. … I have had people from down South, they tell me it reminds them of things they hear down there.”

Haden Gregg and Tom Hills Haden Gregg and Tom Hills will also be performing from time to time in Snowmass this season. Gregg arrived in 1976, spent some time in Santa Barbara and returned to the Valley in 1984. Hills, who was a teacher in the Aspen School District for 20 years, has always played music on the side. Gregg says he’s played with Hills and most other live musicians in the Valley Jill Beathard In Snowmass Rob Tepper, aka Rocky Mountain Rob, plays harmonica at the Edge restaurant on Dec. 7. Five Shades of Jazz Tom Hills has also developed something a little different for après-ski entertainment at the 8K Restaurant at Viceroy Snowmass. Hills has brought in Vid Weatherwax, an accomplished musician from Detroit, to play five nights a week. The music touches a variety of genres — including r&b, jazz, soul, bossa nova, lounge and reggae — but all within a smooth, listenable sound. “Since the term jazz can mean many things to many people, we were careful not to stick to a strict style, such as traditional jazz,” Hills said. “Instead, we sought to bring the most accessible styles of jazz and jazz-influenced genres, such as contemporary and New Orleans-style jazz.”

Courtesy photo Damian Smith has been a musician in the Roaring Fork Valley for 17 years. Find him at Sneaky’s, Base Camp and the Ranger Station in Snowmass Village this winter.

Weatherwax plays the keyboard and makes all the arrangements. His guests include Chris Bank on the saxophone and bass on Friday nights and Roberta Lewis on vocals Saturday nights. “Vid Weatherwax suggested having guest artists throughout the week,” Hills said. “This provided variety along with the consistency of (Weatherwax’s) full, yet controlled sound.”
