Hit the trail on two wheels Two decades of trail-building have given rise to an extensive, interconnected network of cycling terrain in and around Snowmass Village. It started with the relocation of the Rim Trail, according to The Aspen Times, and in the past four or five years has boomed. The development of Sky Mountain Park, a joint effort by Pitkin County, Snowmass Village and Aspen, also added to the available terrain, and last year Aspen Skiing Co. added five miles of trails on the Snowmass ski area. Hence, if you want to go mountain biking during your stay, look no further for any skill level and type of terrain.
Some popular trails around Snowmass: • Valhalla Trail — The freeride, downhill Valhalla Trail, starting at the top of Elk Camp Gondola, features twists and turns, jumps and bridges sure to keep the most talented riders on their toes. • Rim Trail — Enter this trail at the southern end near Mountain View Apartments and ride up to the mosaic platform looking toward Mount Daly. The trail then follows the ridge between Old Snowmass and the Village. Park a car at the other end or use the Village Shuttle to get back. • Sky Mountain Park — This 2,500-acre collection of open space parcels offers miles of trails, with two new ones planned for construction this summer. The gem of the park is the Skyline Ridge Trail, which runs along the ridge separating the Owl Creek and Brush Creek valleys. Access the park via Viewline Trail or Radar Road. • Owl Creek Trail — This easy, less-than-5-mile trail winds up at Buttermilk ski area, connecting Snowmass to Aspen over some hills. Passing through aspen groves and open meadows, most people begin this ride on the Aspen end. • Government Trail — This is a longer, more difficult connection to Aspen that passes through some beautiful landscape. The singletrack trail is 12 miles long, usually ridden west to east. Access it from either of two points on the Ditch Trail.

All pro Snowmass Village is sharing in the excitement of the USA Pro Challenge this year. The third annual cycling competition has chosen Aspen for its first two stages, starting with a 66-mile circuit race between Aspen and Snowmass Village. The route will take riders over Owl Creek and Brush Creek roads, so there will be plenty of opportunity for spectating. In addition, many teams and their crews are staying in Snowmass hotels. If you’re lucky enough to be in town in August — or if you’re thinking about it now — parties and celebrations will surround the event throughout the week.
Other events: Master of the Mass – July 12- 14 When it comes to mountain bike races, the Master of the Mass is a beast of an event. In this four-stage, three-day mountain biking race, riders conquer a variety of terrain including chainless downhill, cross-country, downhill and super-downhill stages — all on the same bike. For 40 years, the Snowmass Rodeo has been keeping western heritage alive and well in a weekly event that’s fun for the whole family. The rodeo, every Wednesday at Town Park, features bull and bronco riding, barrel racing, roping, and mutton busting and a calf scramble for kids. Last year the rodeo also started an event called burro racing, in which teams of three push and pull a burro from one end of the arena to the other. Most of the competitors in the main events are professional cowboys and cowgirls. Dinner will be offered this year by Conundrum Catering, and a full bar will be available. Former longtime local Twirp Andersen still returns to Snowmass Village every week to perform songs during dinner and around the campfire. S’mores after the events wrap up are a highlight on a nice night. Rodeo organizers are well aware that this is a family event. Pony rides are back this year in addition to the other kids activities. The biggest selling point for lots of parents is the free admission for children under 10. For Jim Snyder, rodeo manager, who’s been involved for 14 years, the rodeo is all about preserving western heritage. “Most of these people who show up, they’ve never seen a rodeo before,” Snyder said. “They’re blown away.”

Thursday nights on Fanny Hill For 22 years, Fanny Hill has been the place to be on Thursday night. That’s when everyone heads to the base of Snowmass for music and a good time — for free. Just for kids 1 2 Visit the Ice Age Discovery Center and learn hands-on about the big fossil dig that took place here in 2010. The center, located on the Snowmass Village Mall, also has a host of activities to offer this summer.
Spend a day at the Snowmass Recreation Center, which offers a skate park and tennis, sand volleyball and basketball courts at no cost. The center also has four outdoor pools for when you need to cool off.

Pack a picnic and hike the Ditch Trail to the bench, which offers a perfect view of Mount Daly. This flat trail on the backside of the ski area is a perfect walk for hikers of all ages and abilities.

Working on the ranch Winter might be prime season for some
ski town industries, but with more than 150 workshops, weekly artist lectures and auctionettes and other events, summer is a whirl of activity at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village.
The Anderson Ranch campus, which consists of barns and houses transferred from former ranches in the area, has long been a haven for lovers of the arts. Earlier this year, Gov. John Hickenlooper paid a visit to this cultural gem, tucked away on Owl Creek Road next to the Snowmass Chapel. The workshops are the center’s core business and are offered for all skill levels. Some are more advanced and require participants to submit a portfolio for faculty to determine if they’re eligible, but others are geared toward people with no prior experience. The center also offers workshops for kids ages 4 through 17. From June 24 to 28, children can participate in designing a float for Aspen’s Fourth of July parade. Anderson Ranch has won “Best Children’s Float” for the past three years. Registration in workshops is filling up quickly, and some programs are already full. Students can register and view the summer workshop catalog online at www.andersonranch.org. All workshops for adults meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for the dates scheduled. Times for children’s and teen programs vary, but most are also Monday through Friday. Summer events
The ranch will begin a featured artists lecture series June 13, an annual summer program that brings internationally recognized artists to the campus to speak and present their work. Most of the presentations are at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays in the Schermer Meeting Hall. The series is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. This summer the center is also offering the opportunity to purchase works of art at its Lunchtime Auctionettes every other Friday, starting June 14. Residents and guests of Aspen-Snowmass this summer might be a bit surprised by the look of local fire and rescue vehicles. That’s because four public safety agencies in the upper Roaring Fork Valley are transforming their vehicles — and some of their buildings — into operational works of art. Portraits of Hope is an organization through which young hospital patients and students paint murals that become high-profile works of art, which provides creative therapy for the patients and educates young people about civic responsibility. Four primary response agencies in the upper Roaring Fork Valley have agreed to let some of their ambulances, trucks, stations and off-road vehicles be its next project. “I just can’t see anything but good out of it,” said Chief Steve Sowles, of Snowmass-Wildcat Fire Protection District, who was instrumental in getting the project off the ground, according to his peers. “My entire career I’ve been an out-of-the-box fire chief. I try to do things that are a little bit different, that bring the right kind of attention for the things that we do.” The artwork, a flower pattern, is painted on panels, which have been applied temporarily to equipment owned by Snowmass Fire, Aspen Volunteer Fire District, Aspen Ambulance District and Mountain Rescue Aspen. The vehicles and buildings were all transformed in early June. Sowles said in some places transforming emergency vehicles this way might be confusing, but here where there’s one main road between the communities, people will see them enough so that it
doesn’t represent a risk. It also doesn’t damage the equipment.
What’s behind all the flowers Founded by brothers Ed and Bernie Massey in 1995, Portraits of Hope has produced numerous large-scale public art projects throughout the country and world, including most recently the New York City taxi fleet in 2007 and the lifeguard towers of Los Angeles County in 2009-10. The work that they do originated as providing an opportunity for children in hospitals to relax and participate in something they can be proud of. It now also has an educational aspect, as the nonprofit typically gets involved with schools and after-school programs in communities to talk about social issues and civic responsibility. Children in hospitals in Los Angeles and Denver — some of whom could be from this area — will be working on the Aspen-Snowmass project. Students at Aspen, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs schools also participated.
“I absolutely covet any chance I get to promote civic engagement at any level,” said Aspen Fire Chief Willard Clapper in a Portraits of Hope questionnaire. “This is the primary reason that I was excited about (Portraits of Hope) and its program. Just painting trucks and buildings is nice, but getting people to become involved is the critical piece for me.”

About 2,000 young people and adults participated in program sessions in schools and hospitals and painted panels.
Why Aspen-Snowmass emergency agencies? According to the Masseys, this is the first time in the country and maybe the world that fire and rescue fleet vehicles will be transformed into operational works of art. And it’s no accident that Portraits of Hope chose the fire and rescue agencies. When kids in hospitals are asked who their heroes are, first responders always come up, the Masseys said. “Kids already value the profession so much,” said Bernie Massey. “Let’s see if we can do a project that can highlight the work that they do.” Most Portraits of Hope projects are put up in large urban centers, but the international reputation and resort identity of Aspen make it highly visible to the public. Its size makes it easier for entire fleets of emergency vehicles to be transformed and to be seen. “By us doing this community and this area … this will be an incentive for leaders to get their kids involved,” said
Ed Massey, a fine artist. “This will be photographed and seen in all corners of the world.” Mountain Rescue is looking to expand its educational outreach, and getting its name out there is key to accomplishing that. “I see (the project) as a way to generate awareness of what we do,” said Jeff Edelson, director of operations at Mountain Rescue. For many kids, especially those who spend their childhoods in and out of hospitals, they might never have an opportunity to contribute to something so high-profile as Portraits of Hope, said Ed Massey. “This is the first major achievement of many of their lives,” said Bernie Massey. “Very few kids, in fact very few adults, have painted something of that size,” Ed Massey said.
