Note from

Pastor Mark & Lora When we do Second Saturday Serve or Easter Eggtravaganza, what are we really doing? We’re seeking the peace and prosperity of our city. When we make meals in DC, Manassas, and Alexandria for our friends who are experiencing homelessness or when we partner with Love 146 to end human trafficking, we’re seeking the peace and prosperity of our city. We did the same when we turned a crack house into a coffee house, and when we turned in abandoned apartment building into the DC Dream Center. Every week, hundreds of NCCers work, and give, and dream, and seek peace and prosperity for their neighborhoods. That trajectory continues as we get closer to opening our miracle property at the Navy Yard Car Barn this spring. Keep praying, keep seeking, and stay tuned. The best is yet to come!

Seeking the Peace and Prosperity of the City By Pastor Mark Batterson

We have three core convictions as a church: 1. The church ought to be the most creative place on the planet 2. The church belongs in the middle of the marketplace 3. We believe God will bless us in proportion to how we give to mission and care for the poor in our cities. I believe those core convictions converge in a unique way in Washington, DC, at the corner of 8th and M Streets, SE—the old Navy Yard Car Barn and our new prototype campus and marketplace. That city block will be a launching pad for us to carry out the calling in Jeremiah 29:7 to seek the peace and prosperity of our city. I’m not sure there’s a church in America that has done what we’re attempting to do, at least not on this scale. If we get this right, we create a prototype for the rest of our campuses and many future campuses. But we also create a prototype for the urban church. Our vision is to leverage this property to seek the peace and prosperity of our city in ways we’ve never been able to before.

I am thrilled to report that Phase 1 of this project will be complete in the next couple of months: a 1,000-seat event venue where we’ll worship on weekends, along with kid’s ministry space and an expansive lobby area. You’ll hear more about this at the end of March when we begin our “Yes & Amen” series. Phase 2 is a Child Development Center, and it’s desperately needed in our community. The design is under way. When it’s open, it will have the capacity to provide quality, kingdom-focused child care for about 200 kids. Through Phase 3, the Marketplace, we will create a place where church and community cross paths. We will create a place where every penny of profit goes to kingdom causes, and we’ll do more than that. We’ll incubate entrepreneurs. We’ll create business as mission models. And we’ll conscientiously create hundreds of jobs through the retail and restaurants that partner with us. God has called each one of us to NCC—for such a time as this, for such a place as this. He has called us to bless a city, to do things that will make a difference seventy years from now. Every single one of us, at each of our campuses, has a part to play in making this God-sized dream a reality.

“Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters . . . increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city . . . .” from Jeremiah 29

What’s going on

Second Saturday Serve Saturday, March 9

Every second Saturday, we get together to meet tangible needs in our communities. We gather first thing Saturday morning at a central location (Ebenezers Coffeehouse in DC or Potomac Yard in VA) to get to know each other and pray together, then we’ll head out to the various projects. Learn more at nationalcommunity.com/now.

Serve with the DC Dream Center info@ddreamcenter.com
