For 38 years, Theatre Works has boasted some of the most innovative and radical thinking independent artists in Australia. Our St Kilda Parish has been a place where talented home-grown and national theatre practitioners come to hone their craft, stage their ideas and bring their voices and bold new visions to life. In our fractured political and social landscape, the arts are more important than ever. Theatre Works’ 2018 season presents a series of backdrops that respond to global fear and uncertainty and the desire for meaning and justice. These shows put a spotlight on the strange and unfamiliar, creating a conversation that is necessary and now. Experience Theatre Works through new eyes in this intimate live art experience. Through personal experiences, reflections and cultural perspectives, five performers from Melbourne and Seoul will create connections to the spaces, streets and ambience in the area outside Theatre Works, linking the theatre to the social and cultural environment in which it sits. Part of the 2018 Festival of Live Art (FOLA), UNKNOWN NEIGHBOURS is a quirky and curious work of performance art that explores cross-cultural parallels through walking performance, breaking down and overcoming the limitations of traditional theatre. Known for uncovering the strange personal details that lie beneath the skin of social convention, Melbourne’s Ranters Theatre in collaboration with Creative VaQi from Seoul, South Korea, promise to lead audiences on a journey, engaging them with their surroundings until the ordinary becomes something else that both reflects what it emerged from and transcends it. “Lee’s greatest strength lies in his deep contemplation about life and society, his thorough deliberation about the social role of art, and, above all, his positive outlook and faith in humanity.” - Jin-A Lee on VaQi director, Kyung-Sung Lee, after winning the Theatre Critics Association Award for 2016

“What do you see when you see me? Me? You don’t know what to do with me. You have to do something with your body and you don’t know what to do with me... What is my body to you?” Suzie Flack has made it. Made it to the big league. The first female footballer to play professionally with the men. Which is why you haven’t heard of her; she doesn’t exist. FIERCE is a work of fiction: in sports where speed, strength, agility and power are necessary, no female has competed regularly against men at the highest level. FIERCE is an ode to the drama that is AFL football, masculine culture and a prevailing idea of ‘Australian-ness’ through the eyes of Suzie Flack. Intergenerational relationships, social isolations, gender bias and intimacy all framed by the intense and heightened world of men’s professional sport. What would happen if a woman was good enough to compete against men?

A lush gothic fable, THE NIGHTINGALE AND THE ROSE, explores the beauty of love, art, creation, and song from the perspective of an effervescent nightingale who hears the longing cries of a young student desperate to find a red rose to give to his sweetheart. On her quest to retrieve the red rose for the lovesick student, the nightingale is confronted with a haunting decision that will shake her and the very universe to its core, her life and voice for a red rose, or eternal heartbreak.

Told through a highly stylised, bombastic, and queer aesthetic, Little Ones Theatre’s exploration of Oscar Wilde’s most bewitching and melancholic fairy tale will unpack the adult longing laced within Wilde’s poetic prose, highlighting idealistic and cynical perspectives of love with all his decadent symbolism and cheeky wit.

In this era of Post-Truth Politics, does lying need to be disguised anymore? Is the notion of truth a reality or only a perception? In POLYGRAPH, truth is on trial just as it is in our current political landscape. POLYGRAPH is a play noir: part metaphysical thriller, part murder mystery and part love story. Based on a series of interwoven true stories, the story unfolds as personal and political perspectives shift. Six years after being suspected of the brutal murder of his closest friend, Francois sets out to make a film about the incident. Teaming up with Lucie, an actress, and David, a criminologist in charge of polygraph examinations, Francois uncovers a series of unanswered questions with dire implications for everyone involved. Written by the globally-acclaimed director, playwright and actor, Robert Lepage and presented by the physically dynamic, boundary-pushing OpticNerve Performance Group, POLYGRAPH has been metamorphosed to reflect the perception of our changing global reality.

In Yiddish mythology, dybbuks are the unresolved souls who seek to find form through living bodies. This new work from Chamber Made evokes the many ways that the dead inhabit female bodies through language, voice, memory and desire. DYBBUKS is a bilingual (Yiddish & English) contemporary theatre and music work created by lead artist Samara Hersch and collaborators together with three performers, a local Yiddish choir of inter-generational women and four female musicians. Part performance, part concert, part exorcism, DYBBUKS combines mythic stories, traditional Yiddish songs with contemporary composition to present a feminist reimagining of S.Ansky’s iconic Dybbuk story. Through original and traditional text, music, song and image, DYBBUKS deconstructs ideas of the possessed female body, exploring the way in which women across generations continue to embody, preserve and revive the dead. Samara Hersch is an Australian artist working across theatre, film and contemporary performance whose practice is concerned with subverting representations of the ‘other’ through politically and socially engaged work. Chamber Made makes original works located at the nexus of music, sound and performance. The apple is not as juicy, the smart jacket quite as smart, the fast car as fast, the marriage partner quite the fulfillment of your dreams. We thrash about looking for the real thing that seems tantalisingly close but just beyond our reach.” PERPETUAL FRUSTRATION MACHINE is an explosive and raw thrust into the human drives of our desires, combining text and the physical discipline of circus in an unstoppable thrill ride through life. Co-creators, Stephen Sewell and Zebastian Hunter, have imagined a circus drama that explores the current trend of instant fame and the common experience of desiring the unattainable. “There is an infinite void inside of us and it threatens to swallow us whole. This darkness tore into our beings the moment we conceived of ourselves as creatures of desire. Our desire, our longing for insignificant dreams. This destructive void seeks completion in our modern modes of success: recognition, money, violence, sex and domestic bliss. We all want everything and we want it now.” Four daring physical artists throw themselves against this destructive desire for darkness, embracing the poetry of Stephen Sewell’s text whilst taking the audience on an adventure from great heights. Comical, poignant, frenetic and poetic this joyous dance of daring circus invites you to cavort along with us until the world ends.

From tear-jerking tales of self-discovery to side-splitting fanfare, we are proud to present a wide variety of performances, all anchored by a wholesome serve of thought-provoking storytelling. Starting with the world premiere of a hilariously riotous and queered up Greek tragedy, Antigone X as part of the Midsumma Festival, the Theatre Works Parish doors will open to a head-banging Aussie cocktail of gender, queer agendas, genetics, and political leadership.

A riotous, queered-up version of one of the greatest Greek tragedies, Sophocles’ Antigone, comes crashing on the shores of St. Kilda and into Theatre Works. With beach balls, budgy smugglers, and narration from a washed up Cabaret singer replicating that of Taylor Mac after a hurricane, this contemporary work is a tragic farce which pokes serious fun at contemporary issues and politics. In the Midsumma tradition of mayhem and spectacle, Antigone X is a head-banging Aussie cocktail of gender, queer agendas, genetics, and political leadership.
Across May, playwright and author, Hannie Rayson, brings her comedic one-woman show to Theatre Works. Directed by Matthew Lutton and featuring select stories from her acclaimed novel Hello, Beautiful!, Rayson shares tales from an adventurous life to seek out the extraordinary in the everyday. Then, we present a compelling double bill, Elegy by Douglas Rintoul and Swansong by Connor McDermottroe, two intimate stories that will leave you breathless from riveting narrative tension and wonderfully heartfelt performances. In November, director John Kachoyan delivers a bittersweet comedy about gender, sexuality and being a long way from home in UK Playwright Jon Brittain’s brand new work, Rotterdam. Award-winning indie company, The Danger Ensemble, end the year with a bang with their critically acclaimed dystopian adaptation, The Hamlet Apocalypse. Shakespeare like you’ve never seen it before, seven actors stage Hamlet on the eve of the apocalypse, asking us to consider what gives our lives meaning as their world ends.

ASSOCIATE ARTISTS PROGRAM FOR EMERGING ARTISTS In 2018, Theatre Works continues its Associate Artist Program dedicated to emerging artists. The program presents six emerging artists from various disciplines with the opportunity to be seconded to a Theatre Works production in line with their field. Artists have the opportunity to engage in the artistic process and extend their professional networks. Artists also receive access to Theatre Works’ Creative Director and Artistic Advisory Panel to discuss their own work for potential presentation in 2019. Participants will be selected through a nationwide open call out process in January 2018.

Following sell-out 2017 masterclasses, Theatre Works will continue to partner up with critically-acclaimed performance group, OpticNerve for a series of dynamic masterclasses in 2018. Founded by Director Tanya Gerstle, OpticNerve is known for their distinctive ‘pulse’ methodology – a physical approach to the staging of narrative text. The year will be rounded out by a series of diverse Masterclasses encompassing PERFORMANCE WRITING and DIRECTING – led by some of Melbourne’s most distinguished and unique industry leaders. ENTERING THE PERFORMANCE Each patron must have their own valid Theatre Works ticket and will need to submit this ticket to the Usher at the theatre door before gaining entry to the performance. Due to the intimate nature of the theatre space most shows have a strict no latecomer policy and ticket holders will not be admitted into the theatre after the performance has commenced. Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded due to late arrival. We recommend that you arrive at the theatre at least 15 minutes prior to the performance. PREVIEWS Previews are the exciting first performances leading up to Opening Night. Please note that directors may need to halt the performance for technical reasons. On Thursday the 27th of September, an evening of revelry and merriment will commence. PARKING OPTIONS Parking is at a premium in St Kilda. We recommend arriving early and leaving yourself plenty of time to park. Free parking out the front of the building is extremely limited and street parking in the surrounding area is subject to signage. Alternatively, you could use the paid car parks located on Irwell and Belford Streets off Acland Street. Both are a short walk away from our home at 14 Acland Street.
