step show recount reveals new winner sYlVIA oBell

Managing Editor

Last week an error was discovered in the scoring of the homecoming National Pan-Hellenic Council step show. After a recount of the scoring data it was revealed that The Alpha Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. actually beat the Alpha Phi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. by one point. The Office of Greek Life submitted the following statement on the issue: “On Wednesday evening October 26, 2011, while doing a final review of the scoring data from the Homecoming Step Show, the Office of Greek Life discovered an error with the tabulation formula that was used to tally the scores for the step show participants. Once the error was verified with management, a retally of the scoring was completed for all groups. Unfortunately, this scoring error did result in a change in the overall outcome of the sorority competition, as it was determined that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. should have been named the winner.”

“It feels good to know our hard work paid off. We had a lot to prove,” said Alpha Mu stepmaster Rayven Dulin. The night of the step show the numbers were checked, verified and certified by the tally judge. According S. L. Burnette, director of the Office of Greek Life, their office noticed an error while reviewing the documents in order to process the prize money. It was an error in the formula used to calculate the scores that they noticed. They then retallied the scores. The next day, Oct. 27, the Office of Greek Life met with both Alpha Phi and Alpha Mu to inform them of the error made. “We accept full responsibility for this error and are deeply regretful for any confusion, pain, hurt or negative feelings it has caused,” said Burnette. “The Office of Greek Life must again apologize to both chapters for announcing the wrong team as the winner of the step show.” “The mix-up is an unfortunate situation for both teams. They got to experience a win on stage that night, we didn’t. Most people won’t even know

The Student University Activities Board (SUAB) got students into the Halloween spirit with fun filled ‘Scream Week’ Oct. 26-28. Instead of hosting their usual Halloween party, the student organization spiced things up by giving students a week filled with events. “We usually just have a Halloween costume party,” said SUAB president Kawanna Foster. “This year the idea was brought about by our campus programming chair Courtney Herring because we had three events that we wanted to do.” Scream Week kicked off with the grand Halloween open mic. The event took place in Exhibit Hall and allowed students to showcase their talents through spoken word, rapping, and singing. Although the show did not start until 7 p.m., Exhibit Hall filled up quickly and was already packed by the time the

show started. After all the seats were taken, many students stood up to watch the performances, while others waited patiently outside the door for people to start leaving so that they could enter. Anyone was allowed to sign up to participate in the open mic and names were drawn out of a hat to make the order of the performances random. SUAB used Grand Trilogy, an entertainment group made up of several students, to help with the event. Grand Trilogy member Arrington Green served as the host for the open mic, while other group members performed pre-rehearsed Halloween skits, spoken word, and poetry, to help keep the show tied into the Halloween theme. DJ Weatherman was also there to keep the crowd entertained as he spun popular songs by late performers Aaliyah and The Notorious B.I.G to name a few. One performer’s rendition of

Hundreds of students stood in long lines waiting to enter the haunted house. “I understand that they could only let a certain amount of people in at a time, but the line and wait was terrible,” said Kayla Goodman, a sophomore psychology major. “A lot of people were complaining,” said Goodman. Although costumes were optional, many students did get in the Halloween spirit with costumes ranging from Pochahontas to Cleopatra and Gumby. Aggies get ‘Fired Up’ marching downtown JENELL MCMILLIAN Contributor

Students gathered around the A&T Four statue in preparation for the march downtown to vote for the next city council at 2 p.m. on Oct 26. Although it was a fairly small crowd, students from

A&T, Bennett College, and UNCG were in attendance. As students distributed voter registration forms and pins, two of the candidates, Wayne Abraham and Jim Kee, were among the crowd sharing their political agendas if elected. Abraham, a candidate for Greensboro City Council At

Large, came out before the walk began to express to students how important voting is in order to create change. Abraham said, “It’s tremendously important for people under 30 to vote. They are the ones that will help the change in 2011 and make it better in 2012.” Kee, who is running for District 2 for the Greensboro City Council, made it clear that he is an Aggie. He said his goal is to not only make Aggies vote but give them that step to make the laws.

Kee recently created the first ever internship with the Greensboro City Council where a student from A&T and Bennett College will gain knowledge of the local political system and expand their resumes to excel in their future careers. The representative from A&T, a senior economics major Greg Hill, is also the CEO of JoinMe and the leader of this march. This vote will affect everyone in Greensboro because it is a citywide election. Greensboro is voting for

people who will be directing what is going on in the community. Keisha Liburd, freshman fashion design and merchandising student said, “It’s important to be involved in the community and as freshman this is my first time voting and JoinMe is helping more students like myself get that chance.” Ronald Griswell, junior business management student, said that he called out of work for this march. “I’m losing money right now because I’m going down

to polls to vote. This needs to be something done more around our communities and HBCUs. People are not putting the attention towards voting that it needs to be and I am proud to be a part of something like this right now,” said Griswell. “Fired up, ready to go” was the chant that brought the students to the end of the walk at the Guilford Court House to vote. -jenell_mcmillon@yahoo.com and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

5 Aggies earn $10,000 tech scholarships U’LEASA JOSEPH

The Tom Joyner Foundation has added five N.C. A&T students to its recipient list for the Ford “All in Technology” scholarship. Ariana M.P Betts, Dorian Calhoun, Lariah Edwards, Jasmine Johnson and Eboni Stafford were all awarded $10,000 to go toward their education. Stafford a senior biology major said that she was, “excited to receive the award.” “College students are struggling with money, which is hard to come by.” She goes on to add that if she had the chance to speak with Tom Joyner she would thank him for the opportunity to help fund her education. She plans to use the award to apply for graduate school and

buy books. A&T along with four other HBCUs sent their top recommended students to the Tom Joyner Foundation, and twenty students were chosen. The winners were announced on The Tom Joyner Morning Show during Jeff Johnson’s segment. Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Michigan, teamed up with nationally known radio personality and huge education supporter Tom Joyner to assist HBCU students studying in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Their hope is to further this course of study within the African-American community. “We are proud to have partners that also understand the importance of higher education within the black community,” said Shawn Lollie, a Ford mul-

ticultural marketing manager. To qualify students had to be a junior or a senior STEM major with at least cumulative 3.0 G.P.A. Students were asked to submit their future plans along with their application. Also those who were involved in on-campus activities and community organizations were particularly suggested. “Stem is a way thinking, these students are leading to breakthroughs in innovation”, said Lollie. Many intended jobs of the future include a comprehensive understanding of science and math. “Projections by the U.S. Department of Labor show that of the 20 fastest growing occupations of 2014, 15 of them require STEM preparation.” The Tom Joyner Foundation was created for the purpose of

helping students continue their education at HBCU’s. Officials say they were excited about teaming up with Ford and sharing that passion Joyner has for education. “These scholarships for outstanding students interested in science, math and technology are absolutely vital these days, particularly during this tough economy when our students need all the resources they can get to complete their college degrees,” Joyner said in a press release. “We want to do our part in ensuring students are rewarded for their hard work” said Lollie. Ford intends to continue to award the “All in Technology” scholarship to students at HBCUs. -uleasajoseph@yahoo.com and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

Flood victims try to return home, as rising waters threaten parts of Bangkok, Thailand, on October 29, 2011.

Bangkok flood defenses hold off TODD PITMAN

Associated Press

BANGKOK — Defenses shielding the center of Thailand’s capital from the nation’s worst floods in nearly 60 years mostly held at critical peak tides Saturday, as the waters began to recede after killing almost 400 people. But the threat to central Bangkok was not over, the prime minister said, and the city’s northern districts remained submerged along with much of the countryside. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra urged citizens to let the crisis run its course as the floodwaters slowly drain to the sea, with Bangkok lying in their path. The floods that have besieged central Thailand for weeks submerged entire towns across the country’s heartland and shuttered hundreds of factories over the last two months. “We have the good news that the situation in the central region has improved as runoff water gradually decreased,” she said. “I thank people and urge

them to be more patient in case this weekend is significant because of the high tide.” Bangkok residents watched the city’s dikes and sandbag barriers warily as the high tide pushing up the Chao Phraya River from the Gulf of Thailand peaked Saturday morning. It had been described as the greatest test of the capital’s flood defenses since the northern deluge first approached Bangkok more than three weeks ago. While some water doused streets and shops along the river, the tides fell short of forecast highs and there was no major breach. Higher than usual tides will continue through Monday, but are predicted to be lower than Saturday’s. City official Adisak Kantee said the city’s concrete barriers “are efficiently protecting Bangkok from deluge,” though he said smaller, private dikes might yet fail. “The situation is so far under control,” he said. Yingluck said in her weekly radio address the government

was trying to speed the drainage rate and water in the greater Bangkok area should recede within days. While downtown Bangkok were bone-dry and bustling, areas along the city’s outskirts saw flooding spread. Seven of Bangkok’s 50 districts — all in the northern and western outskirts — are heavily inundated. Eight other districts have seen less serious flooding. In the city’s west, not far from the flooded district of Bang Phlat, workers filled sandbags and stacked them in pickup trucks for delivery to the front lines, while vendors did booming trade in life vests, plastic boats, styrofoam and anything else that floated. With many roads in the area submerged, traffic was heavy both heading in and out of the city. Thousands of Bangkok residents used a special five-day holiday to leave town, wary at confusing warnings about the flood threat and others concerned about sparse supplies

in stores due to weeks of panic buying and flood-related distribution problems. Bangkok Gov. Sukhumbhand Paribatra highlighted another threat: sanitation. He ordered boats to collect uncollected garbage in a flooded district where most places were inaccessible by truck. On Saturday, the Flood Relief Operations Center moved from its base at Don Muang airport after a power transformer malfunctioned. The airport, mainly used for domestic flights, closed Tuesday because of flooding on the runways and surrounding streets. While many in Bangkok will be breathing somewhat easier now that the highest of tides has passed, there was no complacency in the Sam Sen area, where a floodwall burst Saturday morning under the pressure from the surging water. Residents and soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder in the churning torrents trying to plug the gap and get the flow under control. At the nearby Boonch-

Kenya military chief talks Somalia incursion robyn dixon

MCT Campus

NAIROBI, Kenya — The commander of Kenya’s defense forces declared Saturday that his troops will remain in neighboring Somalia until the threat from the militant Islamist militia al-Shabab is eliminated and Kenyans feel safe. Given the messiness of other countries’ incursions into Somalia, the vow by defense forces chief Gen. Julius Karangi suggests that Kenya’s first military adventure since independence nearly half a century ago could be a long one. In 1992, U.S.-led forces launched Operation Restore Hope, which led to the “Black Hawk Down” catastrophe of October 1993, in which 18 U.S. troops were killed and the bodies of some of them dragged

through the streets of Mogadishu, the Somali capital. Ethiopia invaded Somalia in 2006 to defeat the Islamic Courts Union, a religious alliance that had taken power in the country. Ethiopian forces withdrew in 2009, only to see the rapid advance of al-Shabab, a successor to the ICU. Ethiopia claimed to have achieved its mission, but the situation in Somalia suggested otherwise. Kenya’s decision to get involved with one of Africa’s most intractable war zones, a failed state that hasn’t had a government for two decades, was a “spur of the moment” one, Karangi said Saturday. Speaking at a news conference in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, he said the decision was made in early October. Twelve days later, troops were in Somalia, he said.

“Some people mentioned that this entire operation was preplanned, (that) it had been on the table for many, many months and years, and the answer is no. We acted as a country on the spur of the moment,” he said. Government authority to invade was given Oct. 4, three days after Somali gunmen kidnapped Frenchwoman Marie Dedieu from the Lamu resort archipelago on Kenya’s northern coast. She died in captivity, but the date and details of her death aren’t clear. Kenyan troops entered Somalia on Oct. 16, three days after two Spanish aid workers were kidnapped from a refugee camp in Kenya by Somali gunmen. The kidnappings, and their impact on Kenya’s $730 million tourist industry, have boosted public support for Operation Linda Nchi, which means “pro-

tect the nation.” Karangi said that for Kenyans to feel safe, al-Shabab would have to be severely “degraded.” “This campaign is not timebound. When the Kenya government and the people of this country feel that they are safe enough from the al-Shabab menace, we shall pull back. Key success factors or indicators will be in the form of a highly degraded al-Shabab capacity,” he said. Karangi said one Kenyan soldier had died so far in the military action. He did not say how many Kenyan soldiers are on the ground, but added that the number is “sufficient.” Kenya’s key aim is to take the town of Kismayu, a deepwater port that is al-Shahab’s main base and its key supply point.

uay boxing camp, a handful of Muay Thai fighters went through their afternoon workout, sparring in a ring surrounded by the overflow of the Chao Phraya river. The camp’s well-worn heavy bags dangled inches above the murky floodwaters, while the weight machines sat submerged up to their seats, rendering them unusable. Don Krasaein, a junior lightweight fighter from the northeastern province of Nakorn Ratchasima, is one of 10-20 boxers who for the past month have had to cut out exercises that can’t be done in the ring but come for three-hour workouts every morning and afternoon. Don, 31, said the flooding was a distraction, but he wouldn’t allow it to affect his fighting, despite the water swelling and peeling the skin on his feet. But he admitted to some worry. “I’m scared the water is going to rise even more,” he said.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a checkpoint in a neighborhood housing United Nations and international aid groups’ offices and guest houses in the southern city of Kandahar early Monday, killing four people including an Afghan policeman, Afghan officials said. Security forces were exchanging fire with armed insurgents who rushed into the area and seized control of a building, Kandahar police chief Gen. Abdul Razzaq said. NATO said that Afghan security forces were “leading the efforts against the attackers.” Immediately after the 6:15 a.m. bomb attack, several insurgents rushed into the area and seized control of an animal clinic near the office of the International Relief and Development organization, said Faisal Khan, head of the Kandahar local government media office. The clinic and IRD offices are near guest houses affiliated with both the IRD and the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, he said. The area is also home to several other international NGO offices and guest houses. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, with spokesman Qari Youssef saying the insurgents were targeting what he claimed was a guest house affiliated with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. But UNAMA does not operate a guest house in the area. Earlier reports said three security guards in the area were killed, but Mohammad Faisal, spokesman for the Kandahar governor’s office, said three civilians and one policeman were killed. Three civilians and a Nepalese guard were wounded, said Faisal. UNAMA said it was aware of the situation, but that “all our staff, both Afghan and non-Afghan ... have been accounted for,” said agency spokesman Dan McNorton. The attack comes two days after the Taliban launched a brazen midday suicide bombing in Kabul, striking a NATO convoy on Saturday and killing 17 people, including five NATO service members, eight civilian contractors and four Afghans.

New nightclub opens in downtown Greensboro SYLVIA OBELL

Managing Editor

The creators of Nxlevel, Newton Dennis and Hercules Conway, have paired up again for their newest business venture: a nightclub. “It’s all about progression in business, you don’t want to stagger. The next logical step for us was to open our own location,â€? said Dennis. Nxlevel and this club are two different entities. Dennis and Conway are the only Nxlevel staff involved in both ventures. The club, One17 Sofa Bar, is located in downtown Greensboro at 117 Greene St. The ofďŹ cial grand opening was held on Oct. 28. The grand opening party was an opportunity for everyone to come out and actually see and experience it. One17 is open for business every Friday and Saturday night. Patrons must be 21 to enter. “Friday will be the more collegiate night while Saturday will be 25 and up preferred,â€? explained Dennis. They also want to make the club affordable. Patrons will be able to get in for free before 11

p.m. if they RSVP on the website. After 11 p.m. they will be charged $5 or $10 to get in but no more than that. When naming the club they wanted to keep it simple. “We just used its location, 117,â€? said Dennis. The club itself has three levels and can hold about 350 people. Greensboro is known for large club venues that can hold in the thousands but Dennis and Conway opted for a smaller location in order to provide a more intimate atmosphere. The bar, T.Vs, and couches are located on the ďŹ rst oor. The second level is the dance oor where the DJ will be located. The third oor is a full out lounge complete with couches where people can go to converse. “We chose this venue because of the three levels. It allows us the chance to give the people something different,â€? said Dennis. “We wanted to give people something new and exciting. I feel the amount of clubs in Greensboro catering to our targeted cliental are lacking.â€? With Nxlevel throwing more events and bringing in more proďŹ t than ever before, one may wonder what made Dennis and

Conway decide to risk their reputation on a new business. Neither of them feel any pressure to live up to anything; in fact it is the opposite. “Our prior success makes us conďŹ dent. We’ll be successful at whatever we do,â€? Dennis said. Dennis and Conway have always had dreams of owning more than one company/business. “Nxlevel will always be the base of everything but ďŹ ve years from now you don’t want to hear that the only thing Herc and Newt are doing is Nxlevel,â€? explained Dennis. “This club is still just one part of our long-term goals. We also want to open up a restaurant,â€? he said. Both men also understand the responsibility that comes with success. “We know a lot of young people look up to us and we always want to lead by example. Show them that they can do anything. You have to love a good challenge. If it’s challenging we want to be a part of it. If it’s easy we want no parts of it.â€? — smobell@ncat.edu and follow her on Twitter @YngBlkandFancy

As I sat in the union a few days ago waiting for my class to start, I decided to grab a directory to see exactly what was in it. Low and behold, I looked at thousands of names, phone

numbers, and home addresses of students from across the country who attend our university. Fast-forward four hours to 4:30 p.m. My cousin, an A&T alumna, calls to tell me that she had a UPS Package waiting for her on her doorstep from someone she saw at homecoming but didn’t know from a can of paint. The package was filled with mushy cards, letters professing their love, and other random souvenirs; she could only attribute this act of stalking to one thing and one thing only, our university directory. Does A&T not realize the world we live in? Do the geniuses behind the directory not realize that home addresses and phone numbers are valuable personal pieces of information? Do they not know that Sept. 11 was effective because information, such as this, was available and ready to use? Until

recently, I was unaware that the university publishes student information every year, nor have I seen an email, letter, flyer, memo, KAMILAH or anything BLACKSTON else that gives students the option to “opt-out” of having their information included in the directory. There is a problem here. There shouldn’t be an “optout” option. There shouldn’t be a student directory exposing that information at all. Speaking of the directory, I noticed that the majority of faculty members only have their departments, office phone numbers, and emails listed. Why does the directory not include all faculty home addresses and phone numbers?

Why is Chancellor Martin’s home address and phone number not included in the directory? Is his information too important to disclose to the whole world? If every student’s information is listed, why isn’t the staff’s data listed as well? If I don’t put my home information on Facebook, which would make it available to my friends and people I actually know, what makes you think that I would want complete strangers to have my personal address where my mother lays her head at night? Are these people crazy? Does A&T not believe in stalkers? It is 2011. People take information and abuse it, using it against other people. What if someone has an enemy and because A&T freely gave out personal information, that person is assaulted, robbed, or even killed? What if someone has a stalk-

er and the directory gives him or her the right tools to be a “peeping tom” or a rapist? This question is posed to the faculty that masterminded the idea of this directory: What if a sex offender, rapist, serial killer, etc. parked outside your home and watched your son or daughter walk home from school every day and the only reason they know where you lived was because they walked into Memorial Student Union, grabbed a directory, searched your name, and found your home? Not such a good idea now is it? There are people in this world who live and breathe trying to destroy homes, businesses, people, etc. Information such as this is extremely valuable to them. Anything could happen now that the world has our information because of the university directory. If I hear that someone sent an unwanted package to my

home, where my family rests, there would be hell on Earth. A&T dropped the ball on this genius move, and I am using sarcasm at its VERY finest when I say genius. If I had known that directories were printed with student information in them, I would have written this article a long time ago. Clearly, if someone doesn’t already have my address and phone number, it is not meant for them to have it. The directories have been printed and people have been picking them up for some time now. The knowledge of student’s information cannot be taken back. All we can do is hope that no one uses our information in a disrespectful or harmful way. “Hide ya kids, hide ya wife. How do you feel about Kim Kardashian getting divorced?

the reason is “I like the design.” You can tell a lot about a person from what he or she puts on his or her body. So girls with tattoos have great stories to me. They are great ways to see where her mind is.

Local elections need better turnout

The general attitude on college campuses and among young voters seems to be one of unconcern, with the exception of the presidential election of 2008. While presidential elections are important, most college students do not fully understand how much local elections can have greater effect on their daily lives than a national election. City council members are in charge of everything from improving road conditions to setting the city’s budget, which can have a direct impact on students, yet the majority chooses not to vote. There is not a comprehensive statistical analysis of voting trends for the entire country for both municipal and presidential elections. However, many different states release their own voting findings for municipal elections and there is the United

States Elections Project, which collects voting data for presidential elections and a few nonpresidential NOMA elections. The data VILANE from the municipal and presidential elections show similarities in voting trends. Primary elections tend to have less voter turnout than the general elections. Also the 2008 presidential elections had slightly more voters than either the 2000 or 2004 presidential elections. This could be due to the younger voters who wanted to play a part in the historic elections Unfortunately, many do not feel that voting at the local level is beneficial or has any affect

on them. In Greensboro, specifically for A&T and campuses in east Greensboro, the officials that we vote for in the upcoming elections could affect the very smell in the environment. The current city council’s attempt to open the White Street Landfill has been postponed for the next city council to handle. Residential areas surrounded the landfill, with the nearest house being just 500 feet away. It stirred up a lot of controversy due to its location in a predominantly African American area. In 2001 the city council voted to close the landfill to residential and commercial trash, which happened at the end of 2006. Due to rising gasoline costs, trucking the trash elsewhere is a large expense to the city and Councilman Mike Barber suggested the idea of reopening the

Guy #1- I as an individual could careless. However, I know a lot of girls look up to her as a role model of some kind. So I hope this shows them that she is no different than any other Hollywood superstar who does these things just for money and attention. Kim K is just another woman who is famous for no reason. Her life has no significance to 99% of Americans, yet we are talking about it right now. So I hope this divorce shows people to wake up and stop paying attention to this woman and her family because they are just dumbing us all down. Guy #2- I didn’t even know she was married until you just told me. But now that I know, I think it is funny. Women around the country are going to be so sad and shocked, but I’m going to need them to wake up. They can front and say they don’t look up to this woman as an icon, but ratings and the media say otherwise. She is not important so neither is her divorce. It’s all about money. Guy #3- Oh no! Not KK! This is bigger news than the situation in Libya. Better yet, this is bigger news than Occupy Wall Street. Kardashian is a living legend for women of all ages. We should all be doing everything we can to make sure these two obvious lovebirds stay together. The future of the world depends on their marriage. I think if A&T students were serious about a better tomorrow, we should stop the Join Me at the Polls, and start a Join Me at Divorce Court movement. Hopefully Kim will see us there and realize this divorce is madness. (This answer was completely sarcastic for those of you who were taking this serious.) What do guys think of girls with tattoos? Guy #1- I think it is sexy for girls to not have any tattoos. Today most women have tattoos and it is refreshing to find a girl who breaks away from the trend and decides to not mark up her body. The female body is beautiful the way it is and does not need to have any tattoos on it. This doesn’t mean I will ignore a girl with tattoos, it just means I much rather talk to a girl without one. Guy #2- I like tattoos so I think a girl with tattoos have interesting stories. Everyone with tattoos have a reason to why they got what they got. Even if

Guy #3- Depends on where the tattoo is on her body. I personally like a tattoo that I have to go searching for. It shows me that she has secrets and surprises up her sleeves. A girl like that is exciting to be with because you never know what to expect next. But if she has tattoos all over her body and stuff I think girls like that need to just go sit down. That is not, was not, and will never be cute to most guys. Big tattoos on a girl are not sexy, plain and simple. Seeing how the World Series was one of the best ever this year, yet nobody on campus was even talking about it, why do you think so many black Americans hate baseball? Guy #1- I don’t hate baseball. I just choose not to watch it because of the lack of black players. Last time I checked, which was recently, Major League Baseball has fewer black players than they have had in the past 40 years. I think for more black people to be interested we need to get another black slugger in the mix. Sports such as baseball, golf, and hockey can have more black viewers if they have more black players and participants. Guy #2- Hate is too strong of a word. I think it is more of a dislike because baseball is boring. The games are too long and you rarely see anyone score. It’s just like soccer. I watch a game every now and then but I really get mad when the NBA season ends because there’s that period of time where baseball is all you got to watch and that is so boring to me. Playing baseball is fun, going to a game is actually entertaining, and there are typically good story lines in the sport. But watching it on TV is so boring to me. Guy #3- I think it is because people like to see big plays. A homerun is great, but it comes so few and far in between that most people become bored. And that’s not just a black thing. I watched most of the World Series and it was great, but ratings were down significantly this year. Baseball just doesn’t do it for most Americans anymore. And that’s not because of race, that’s just because Americans want that big play that you rarely see in baseball.

Aggies now tied for 4th place in MEAC malcolm batts Contributor

Unrelenting wind combined with cold weather and a little bit of rain did not create the most ideal conditions to play a football game Saturday. With this being a homecoming game where sole possession of the conference was up for grabs, the Norfolk State Spartans took the No. 1 spot in the MEAC. The Aggies football program has improved already this year after going 1-10 last season, as well as posting back to back winless seasons a few year ago. Under first year head coach Rod Broadway, the Aggies have defeated perennial power and defending MEAC co-champion Bethune-Cookman. However, with all the success that the Aggies short-handed football program generated this year there are times where

fans, coaches, and players are reminded of all the shortcomings the program has had to endure over the years .This reminder was evident in the final seconds of their heartbreaking 14-10 loss to the Norfolk State Spartans at William “Dick” Price Stadium on Saturday. “We ended up getting our [butts] beat. We had another opportunity to win the ball game, just didn’t make enough plays,” said Broadway. “That’s my responsibility. We have to learn how to win the close ball games. I said a number of times if we’re going to be a really good ball team we have to win the close ball games.” This is the second straight loss for the Aggies who came into the game after losing 3528 in overtime to Howard. Ironically it was also Howard’s homecoming. The loss, according to Broadway, was the culmination of all the numerous mistakes they made throughout the

game. “We just didn’t execute,” said a visibly frustrated Broadway. This is after the Aggies finished just 2 for17 on third downs, had a punt go only a yard giving Norfolk St. the ball on their first possession game at the A&T 10. The Aggies also allowed quarterback, Lewis Kindle to be sacked seven times. A holding call at the NSU 11 forced the Aggies to be pushed back which later resulted in Kindle turning the ball over on a fumble at the NSU 21 and down by four points. However, even with all the mistakes the Aggies still had a chance to take control of the game. Jose Garcia-Camacho’s field goal attempt from 44-yards out with a little over twelve minutes remaining in the game was blocked by Jamal Giddens and recovered by Terrence Pugh, keeping the Aggies in a 14-10 deficit.

With one last gasp, the Aggies took over at their own 33yard line with 2:25 to go. Kindle, who had runs of 7, 6, 20 and 9 yards, set the Aggies up with a 1st-and-10 at the NSU 13 after finding running back Mike Mayhew out in flats. After a quick spike on first down to stop the clock, Kindle threw to the back corner of the end zone to Wallace Miles who could quite haul it in for the go head score. Next Kindle tried to hook up with Larry Raper but that pass fell incomplete as a Spartan defender tackled him as the ball arrived. The Aggies’ last shot at the win ended with a diving Torrian Warren failing to reel in Kindle’s pass as he went to the ground with what look to be the go head touchdown pass. “We don’t have anybody to blame but ourselves and our mistakes,” said Broadway. It was a tough loss for the Aggies considering they outgained Norfolk State in total

yards 288 to 265, but were held to 120 yards offense in the second half. Miles led the Aggies with eight catches for 109 yards while linebacker D’Vonte Grant had a seasonhigh 17 tackles and 3 ½ tackles for loss. This was just the second game of a four-game conference road trip. The loss puts the Aggies (4-4, 3-2) into a log jam for third place in the MEAC, while Norfolk State (7-2, 5-1) stays a half game up on Morgan State for first place in the MEAC. The Aggies will look to end this slump their in next week as they travel to Tallahassee to take on the Florida A&M Rattlers (5-3, 3-2) another one of the teams looking to gain some separation in the conference. -mjbatts@ncat.edu and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

Men’s cross country team places Baseball hosts first camp 5th in MEAC Championships adrian ezell Contributor

With senior runner, Danzeto Cephas, racing in the MEAC championships for his last time, the men’s cross country team finished fifth while Norfolk State once again prevailed finishing first. Junior Janessa Benn has improved each meet, with a little over a second shy of being AllConference, Benn showed great progess and leadership for the Lady Aggies. Overall Benn placed 16th out of 84 women with a time of 19:47.98. The first 15 runners are considered to be all conference. Kristin Rush was not far behind placing 23rd with a time of 20:29.67. Juniors Samira Johnson and Arianna Betts followed up shortly behind with times of 21:01:48 and 21:12.37. Junior Jenea McCammon and sophomore Natalia Bygrave, two sprinters for A&Ts track team,

also ran in the meet helping the Lady Aggies place eighth out of twelve teams as Hampton cruised into first. The Lady Aggies ran a total time of 1:46:40.54. Head coach James Daniels stated, “The women did not have the depth like our men and we will compete at a much higher level next season. We had some good performances throughout the year, but we really had an off day this weekend. We are looking forward to our Indoor and Outdoor season.” Though not first, the men of A&T’s cross country team had one of their best finishes in several years placing fifth out of 13 teams. Junior Paris Simmons finished 31 out of 88 men with a time of 28:27.70. Freshman Christian Harrison was right behind finishing 32 out of 88 with a time of 28:29.09. Cephas had a strong finish with a time of 28:38.50 overall placing 34th. Junior Steve Liggins and freshman Saed Jones followed up helping the Aggies claim fifth overall with a total

After being tied for second place in the conference with Morgan State last season, A&T women’s basketball team plans to take the next step and become MEAC champions even though they are picked to finish third this season. Last season the Aggies ended the season with a record of 1514, which was good enough to earn them a ticket to the conference title game. Though they did not win, hopes are high this year with six returning players and new freshmen. When head Coach Patricia C. Bibbs was asked what her goals were for the team this season, she replied, “undefeated.” The goal is for the Aggies to win both the conference and tournament this season, and playing good team basketball is the way for the team to achieve this goal. However there are some challenges this season. For one, they have a young team with no seniors. Coach Gibbs believes that they have the right team to go on a nice run this year, especially considering the strong leadership in the team’s head captains, Jessica Lyons and Tiffanie Adair. Last season’s leading scorer, Jaquayla Berry,

seems to be quite optimistic about the upcoming season. “The team is progressing very well…we have a lot of talent.” A key improvement that the team has made is in speed. Being able to run up and down the court is a good advantage to have when playing basketball, and when in such a difficult conference a team needs all the advantages they can get. The team has also been working on playing better defense because, “defense wins championships,” said Bibbs. A veteran head coach is not a bad thing to have either. Gibbs is only 14 wins away from the 500-win mark, which is an amazing feat for a head coach. The Aggies are a confident team this year. “We are looking forward to playing every team on the schedule, no one team more than the other, but one game at a time,” the Bibbs assured. Their first tournament is Nov. 11-12 in Rochelle, New York where they will take on Iona on Friday at 11 a.m. The first home game is will be Nov. 15 in Corbett Sports Center against Virginia Union. “It’s going to be an exciting season,” Berry said. -ujjoseph@ncat.edu and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

time of 2:23:42.70. “Even with the bizarre conditions we encountered, we stayed mentally tough and we were able to still compete and help A&T men’s cross country team have its best cross country finish in history,” said Simmons, a promising candidate to help the team to go all MEAC next year. Finishing fifth was one of our better finishes in several years. You always want to finish better and we will next season. All the guys return except for Danzeto Cephas,” said Daniels. The Aggies are preparing to take the title next season. With the exception of Cephas everyone is expected to return, to dominate next years cross country field. “The performance of the athletes was exceptional,” said Cephas. “And [this] being my last year, I am truly grateful I had to the chance to represent such a great institution and to be apart of a talented team.” -msjordan@ncat.edu and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

A cold front kept most people indoors this weekend, but it was not a factor for the A&T baseball staff. This past weekend N. C. A&T’s baseball coaches put on a clinic to help high school players improve their game at the World War Memorial Stadium. Starting at 9 a.m. and running to around 4 p.m., the clinic ran Saturday and Sunday. The clinic offered help in every aspect of the game including running positional, pitching, offensive, and various other drills. They even held a practice game to keep the players active. Head coach Joel Sanchez was happy with the turn out for the clinic despite the cold weather. “I think it shows dedication” Sanchez said, “This cold weather came out of nowhere and they still came.” Coach Sanchez has been very adamant about the baseball program getting involved and helping out within the community since being appointed head coach. With the coaches and the players running drills on the field, the

parents of the players could be found in the stands bundled up. The clinic drew families from all over, including one father that drove his son from New York just to participate. “I think the staff is accomplishing their goals of improving the kid’s game here,” the father said. His child learned about the clinic from his baseball coach back in New York and the father and son began planning to attend the clinic and even about attending A&T. Another parent commented saying his son heard from his coach and really wanted to participate, so they decided to give it a try. “We want to get them ready for the next level, getting them prepared to play at the college level.” Coach Sanchez continued by saying “This clinic runs today and tomorrow, but they’re going to have to work day in and day out to keep improving.” -ajezell@ncat.edu and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

Aggies look to end two game losing streak against the Rattlers Aggie Football: On to the Next kalyn hoyle

Register Reporter

The N. C. A&T Aggies (4-4, 3-2) will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on the Florida A&M Rattlers (5-3, 3-2) in their sixth conference game of the season. After starting conference play with three straight wins, the Aggies have suffered losses against their last two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponents. The Rattlers are led by third year head coach Joe Taylor. After 16 seasons at Hampton University, Taylor joined the Florida A&M family in 2008, inheriting a team that went 3-8 in 2007. Taylor saw instant success as FAMU went 9-3 in 2008 and 8-3 in 2009 in his first two seasons as head coach of the Rattlers. Taylor has the seventh most career victories in Historically Black Colleges and Universities amongst head coaches. In their last game, the Rattlers squeaked out a close win against the South Carolina State Bulldogs (5-4, 4-2) in Orangeburg, S.C. on Saturday. A late fourth quarter touchdown sealed the victory for the Rattlers, giving them a two game

win streak. FAMU’s pass-first offense was extremely efficient against the Bulldogs as Rattler quarterback Damien Fleming completed 34 of 40 pass attempts for 297 yards and a touchdown. Freshman wide receiver Lenworth Lennon finished the game with 13 receptions for 70 yards. The Rattler’s offense dominated time of possession against SCSU, using 43 minutes and 43 seconds of the 60 minute game. The Rattlers offense keeps defenses off balanced, using screen passes and draw plays to utilize their versatility at the running back position. The Rattlers running backs finished their game against SCSU with a total of 142 rushing yards. A&T linebacker D’vonte Grant, who compiled 17 tackles in A&T’s last game, will play an important role in stopping the running game of the Rattlers. FAMU’s defense has allowed an average of 26.9 points per game, giving up 12 rushing and 12 passing touchdowns this season. A&T running back Mike Mayhew will look to bounce back after he was held under 100 rushing yards for the first time this season against the

Norfolk State Spartans. The A&T offense should be able to produce good yardage in the air and on the ground, the Rattlers have allowed an average of 377.4 yards per game. The Rattler’s defensive unit has been consistently effective at creating turnovers against the pass. The Rattlers have 18 interceptions on the season, which were returned for a total of 179 yards. Expect to see a game dominated by defensive play. A&T defense has played well all season, allowing an average of only 283.5 yards per game. Quarterback Kindle and the A&T offense will be under the microscope after posting a mere ten points against the Spartans last Saturday. The pressure will be on the Aggies as they attempt to stay afloat in the MEAC standings and end their current losing streak against a Rattlers team that seems to be gaining momentum as the season progresses. -kdhoyle@ncat.edu and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

AROUND SPORTS ST. LOUIS—The Cardinals announced Monday that manager Tony La Russa has retired after 16 seasons with the Cardinals. “Tony leaves behind a legacy of success that will always be remembered as one of the most successful eras in Cardinals history,” chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said at the announcement. “I knew this day would come. I just hoped that it wouldn’t.” La Russa said he told owner Bill DeWitt and the players Sunday evening of his decision. He said he actually made his decision to retire in August, and informed general manager John Mozeliak at the time. “There isn’t one (factor) that dominates (my decision),” La Russa said at the news conference. “They all just come together telling you your time is over. “We went through the season and I felt that this just feels like it’s time to end it and I think it’s going to be great for the Cardinals to refresh what’s going on here. “I’m looking forward to what’s ahead. I’m ready to do something different.” His announcement Monday came just three days after the Cardinals won the World Series and less than 24 hours after the parade and victory celebration downtown. La Russa, 67, led the Cardinals to three World Series and two championships, and the team played in the postseason nine times under his leadership, including his first season in St. Louis in 1996. He also won a World Series as manager of the Oakland A’s in 1989. He retires as the third winningest manager in Major League Baseball history behind only John McGraw (2,763) and the all-time leader Connie Mack (3,731). La Russa acknowledged that he had some friends pushing for him to return and get the 36 victories needed to surpass McGraw and become the winningest manager who didn’t have an ownership stake in the team. “I think it was a pretty big surprise,” starter Chris Carpenter said. “I think a lot of people were caught off guard. Knowing Tony as long as I have, I know that he wasn’t going to change his mind and there had to be a reason for it.”

Trey drops “Anticipation 2” Ashley Vaughn Scene Editor

Trey Songz had his fans doing nothing but anticipating new R&B music with his latest mixtape release of Anticipation 2. This mixtape comes after much commercial success with his latest albums ‘Ready’ and ‘Passion, Pain & Pleasure’. Also, where all his hype began was after his first mixtape Anticipation, where he remixed then popular songs into his own, and released new material of his own that the R&B industry yearned for at the time. To many it seems as though his shine is dying down, and the release of this Anticipation 2 mixtape could either prove those people right or give Trey one more chance to prove that he is here to stay. This mixtape features 14 songs and majority of them talk about sex, foreplay and more sex. One of the songs most fans would go right to is “Still Scratchin Me Up” because this is a sequel to “Scratchin Me Up” on his first mixtape, yet this sequel is nothing like the original song. For the first song to be such a big hit, one would think he would make the sequel top the original to no belief, but it is a disappointment. Other great in-the-mood songs come from the obvious

When one listens to those songs their mind is sure to wander, and minus some of the explicit audio sound effects the songs are done in good taste. Good songs that don’t lead right to the bedroom but are good listens include “Flights & Skype”, “U Should Roll...’”and ‘Top Of the World.’ These songs show the softer side of Trey and are a nice release from the oversexualized mixtape; they provide a good balance. The random song on the mixtape goes to “Girl on Girl” where Trey sings about the girls who get fed up with nonsense boys put them through, and choose to mess with girls. Overall, this mixtape is a good listen and will leave listeners satisfied. But if you were looking for something of the magnitude of ‘Anticipation’ and ‘Ready,’ this album is a good third place spot after those classics. — anvaughn@ncat.edu and follow us on Twitter @ATRegister

first song began, until the artists were gone from the stage for the night, the thousands in attendance remained on their feet for the entire show. The show began with the two artists performing songs from their recent Watch the Throne album. Songs such as “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Gotta Have It”, and “Otis” all had the crowd hype from the very beginning. Yet, as the show went on Jay-Z and Kanye West both took turns performing the songs that most fans came to see. Everything from “Big Pimpin,” “Gold Digger,” “99 Problems,” “Heartless”, “Public Service Announcement,” “Jesus Walks,” “Empire State of Mind,” “Good Life,” “Dirt Off Your Shoulders,” “All of the Lights,” and

many more classics were played during the concert. There was even an emotional moment during Kanye’s performance of Runaway. In the end, the two superstars closed the show by playing their latest hit, “N****s In Paris.” And the song was played not once, not twice, but three epic times in a row! Yet, the show was still not over. Once the crowd thought it was time to go home, Jay-Z ended the night by performing one of his older hits “Encore”. Despite the two-hour delay, the show lived up to the hype. Not only was it a great opportunity to see two hip-hop titans on stage at the same time, but it was also a great opportunity to hear many of the songs that put

the two living legends on the throne in the first place. For many hip-hop lovers, such as myself, it was a friendly reminder to exactly why we fell in love with the art of hip-hop. When asking a group of fans

to sum up the night with one word, their response was simply “Cray.”

The show did not consist of any dancing, guest appearances, magic tricks, or even as much as a break in between acts. However, the dynamic duo showed that when you have this much star power in one arena, none of that is necessary. — tlmccask@ncat.edu and follow him on Twitter @TrumaineWasHere

Wale shows “Ambition” heleese scott Reporter

Nearly two years after the release of his debut album “Attention Deficit”, Wale is back on the scene with his second studio album Ambition. Much has changed for the Washington D.C. artist within the two year time period. Most notably, he left Interscope Records and is now signed with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group (MMG). Now as a member of MMG, Wale makes his motives clear in the first track.Yet, the mediocre album is far from history in the making. Not to be misconstrued, the album is overall a good listen. However, in comparison to some of Wale’s previous works, this album demonstrates a lack of consistency. On a positive note, it is obvious that Wale was given more musical freedom on this album. The songs range from female-friendly dedications such as the popular “Lotus Flower Bomb” which features Miguel, to upbeat, pop tracks like the Diplo-produced “Slight Work” which features Big Sean. Lloyd makes a guest appearance on “Sabotage”. All of these songs (with the exception of “Slight Work”) make up a third of the album and seem to be intended for a

female audience. Listeners will be happy to witness Wale and Kid Cudi’s friendship rekindled as they work together on the song “Focused.” Tracks like ‘Double M Genius’ allow listeners to get a taste of the witty lyricism Wale is capable of constructing. A large portion of the album, however, is spent focusing on Wale’s work ethic, how he is better than

mainstream hip hop audience. Yet he is still able to deliver messages that express subject matter of importance. In “DC Or Nothin’” Wale addresses issues plaguing his hometown such as the AIDs epidemic, the surplus of teen pregnancies, violence amongst different neighborhoods and the corruption within the legal system. Wale is an excellent artist, but this album does not display the best of his ability. The album certainly is not terrible or worth bashing, but at the same time it is not a classic. In his song “Legendary,” Wale promises his “only fear is mediocrity.” It seems that with Ambition, Wale’s greatest fear has come to light.

There is no doubting Wale’s work ethic, but is it necessary for him to continuously remind the listener of it? Both tracks are loaded with lyrics and have epic beats, but humility will always outweigh arrogance. Although Wale was able to be more creative with Rick Ross’s label, it is apparent (and not surprising) that the album is geared first and foremost towards the

Wale ft Meek Mills & Rick Ross “Ambition”

While we all patiently wait on Wale’s debut album, Ambition the young rapper has released his new single from the album titled, “Ambition” as well. The song features new comer Meek Mills and the successful big guy, Rick Ross. This is a good mid tempo song that will have you nodding your head to the music, but also conscious of the lyrics. This can be a motivational song as Wale says, “they gonna love me for my ambition, it’s easier to dream a dream, though its harder to live it”.

Lil Twist ft Busta Ryhmes “Turnt Up”

The Young Money mohawk wearing rapper has released a new song with rap veteran Busta Ryhmes. This is a nice addition to his rap resume, but this song isn’t something that the radio should be rushing to play. Other than Busta’s verse, the song is played out and sounds like something we’ve heard before. Lil Twist hasn’t found his voice in the rap industry and this song proves that with his amateur rhymes.
