Annual Report 2009/10

Theatre Hullabaloo is a pioneering theatre company creating quality work for young audiences. We believe that children deserve work of the highest quality and greatest artistic challenge. It is this challenge that drives us to form collaborations with those working at the forefront of their art form, developing ideas with young people, to create excellent and inventive theatre.

PROTEST. EXCITEMENT

A Word From the 2009 / 2010: The year of Metamorphosis Birthday candles burned brightly to celebrate 30 years of Cleveland Independent Theatre Company Ltd and to welcome the arrival of Theatre Hullabaloo. Five, our dance installation for early years, was the result of an initiative to encourage new talent. It provided an opportunity for an exciting exchange with Theatre Direct Canada and we were delighted when it was nominated for the Dora Mavor Moore Award. Beautiful Anjali introduced us to stories from different cultures as our sumptuous Banyan Tree toured the country. At Takeoff 2009, we not only welcomed new performing companies and friends from the sector, but also introduced the Departure Lounge, an opportunity to share ideas for new work. Our dark, challenging operetta, ‘My Mother Told Me Not to Stare’, generated much discussion in this forum before touring to national acclaim. With so much uncertainty in our lives, especially when the industry and Arts organisations have such uncertain futures, we need to ensure our young people continue to have access to theatre of the highest quality. Miranda and her team continually strive to create exciting and inventive theatre, for us all.

A from the Creative Producer The best birthdays bring celebration, noisy excitement and fuss! So, in the company’s 30th birthday year and after a period of transition, it seemed fitting to rebrand in the spirit of this and become Theatre Hullabaloo. With a new name a new artistic identity came to fruition – one characterised by ambition, bravery, partnerships and the flourishing of some exceptional creative teams. This year’s highlights have included leading the FIVE team to Toronto to share our work with children, educators, funders and policy makers then welcoming our Canadian colleagues back to Darlington to create a beautiful banyan tree. Spring 2010 saw the creation of our gothic operetta, My Mother Told Me Not to Stare, combining cutting-edge new music, fabulous storytelling and inspired design, it stunned and delighted audiences of young and old alike. Focus was on early years at Takeoff 2009 as the festival celebrated the best work for our youngest audiences from the UK and abroad in partnership with the European Small Size network and Find Your Talent. It has indeed been a Hullabaloo of a year and we move forward in noisy excitement and celebration.

In partnership with Theatre Direct Canada and the Pakistani Cultural Society. In autumn 2009, we welcomed our Canadian colleagues, Theatre Direct, back to Darlington to assist in the making of the UK premiere of Beneath the Banyan Tree. This partnership was borne out of a desire to share the best of each other's practice, both educational and artistic. Beneath the Banyan Tree performed a total of 40 shows in 10 schools and 16 venues where 3676 children and their grown-ups enjoyed the show. 518 children took part in Indian dance and storytelling workshops.
