takeoff 2010 FESTIVAL OF THEATRE FOR CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE
Darlington Arts Centre 11th-12th November
Welcome to Takeoff 2010 Book your ticket, fasten your seat belt and get ready for Takeoff! This year’s festival reflects the diversity and ambition of the Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) sector and provides children, young people, families and theatre practitioners opportunities to be challenged and inspired. Takeoff enables us all to make new contacts, catch up with old friends, see work in development and find out more about life on other planets inhabited by the press, the commercial sector and children’s television. What’s more, Takeoff plays its part in helping to raise the status and profile of theatre for young audiences, build relationships with partners in other sectors and support our own professional development. We’re all looking forward to welcoming you to Darlington. I hope that you enjoy participating in Takeoff as much as I have enjoyed putting this exciting programme together.
Steve Ba ll Festival Programmer Theatre Hullabaloo would like to thank the following partners and funders

Theatre Hullabaloo Theatre Hullabaloo is delighted to bring you this year’s Takeoff Festival of Theatre for Children and Young People, packed to the brim with fantastic shows from home and abroad plus a busy programme of discussions and sharing of scratch work. Takeoff is the place for people working in the field of theatre for young audiences to come together to share in a forum of debate and comparison. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness of the achievement and potential of our field amongst funders, educators, programmers and producers. As partners in the European Small Size Network, this year’s festival programme retains a particular commitment to work for the very youngest with a special strand of some of the best theatre for Early Years. We’re also delighted to welcome WebPlay
as a contributor to the programme offering new opportunities to conceive the way we present our work in the digital age. As we face new political and economic realities, we must all look at new ways to shape our work for future audiences. There has never been a more important time to come together to advocate loudly for the value of our work and its impact on the lives of thousands of young people across the country every year. We look forward to welcoming you to Takeoff 2010.

WebPlay This year Takeoff welcomes WebPlay as a contributor to the festival, giving delegates the opportunity to learn more about online platforms and how they can extend the learning of the live theatre experience. Page to Stage is a secure online platform where theatre companies can create collaborative projects with their school audiences. Page to Stage was developed by WebPlay, an arts education charity that creates projects for schools which combine drama and technology. Over the last ten years, WebPlay projects have demonstrated how technology can be used to further and enhance the live theatre experience for children and young people, linking many of the UK’s top children’s theatre companies with over 25,000 children from across the UK, USA, India and China. Page to Stage will be launched at Takeoff 2010 with projects that will enable participating schools to interact online with the creative teams and explore the plays and how they were made. During the festival, there will be an opportunity to take part in a presentation about how the projects were made and be ‘in conversation’ with Sydney Thornbury of WebPlay.

La Società della Civetta (Italy) Droplets
1 - 6 years
Created by Sara Nanni & Guglielmo Papa Directed by Guglielmo Papa Performed by Sara Nanni & Guglielmo Papa Goccioline (Droplets) is a performance about water as an essential resource not to be wasted, but to be valued and loved. The dramatisation, based on words and sounds, unravels throughout a journey from the Western world to Africa, in search of enchantment and magic.
Sara and Guglielmo, through effective and simple actions, invite the children to listen to the water; whether it flows in all its abundance or whether there is very little and it needs to be gathered drop by drop.
Elements on which the performance is based are a thirsty camel, waiting for a cloud and the moment of joy when the rain finally falls.
Takeoff Programmer says, “A delicate and humorous production full of life and meaning”
La Società della Civetta was founded in 2007 by the actor and director Guglielmo Papa who has been active in the field of children’s theatre for more than fifteen years. Tell Tale Hearts (England) From Here to There
18 months - 4 years
Directed by Natasha Holmes Devised and designed by the company Music direction by Michael Szpakowski A show that’s full of the joy of building and knocking down, climbing over and crawling under, of hiding, of surprising and peek-aboo! A show to make you smile! Using rhythm and vocal play, shoe boxes, card and the world of the imagination, two quite independent individuals discover ways to play together and reach each other. Looking at the dynamics of how young children play, both alone and together, this
production brings to life some of the humour, pathos and ridiculousness of bridging two separate worlds with all the problems and hiccups that entails.
Created in collaboration with The Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield.
Takeoff Programmer says, “This was partly developed in the Departure Lounge last year and we’re thrilled to present the full production at Takeoff 2010”
TELL TALE HEARTS was reconstituted in 2003 as a touring visual theatre company that devises and delivers theatre productions exclusively for children and their families. Our highly inventive productions combine high quality design with performance, live music and puppetry. Our shows give children an interactive and tactile experience of the magical and multi-sensory world of theatre.

Departure Lounge The Departure Lounge is the place you go to before you Takeoff! In an attempt to give people with ideas for a new show a space to share them (perhaps find a collaborator, some funding, a co-producer, just a nugget of wisdom), we will be presenting four new projects in the Departure Lounge at this year’s Takeoff. Delegates will be encouraged to offer advice, share in different processes and have a dialogue with other artists about how work might develop.
How to Get Involved If you would like to show a few minutes of something new, or talk about an idea for a future piece of work that excites you, applications to be part of the Departure Lounge will open 1st September. We will also be looking for mentors to support this year’s Departure Lounge artists. More details about both opportunities will be available on our website. www.theatrehullabaloo.org.uk
