Welcome to TakeOff FESTIVAL 2014

20–26 October

A warm welcome to you and your family as we introduce another jam-packed festival of children and young people’s theatre. TakeOff Festival brings a fantastic programme of shows to more venues across the North East than ever before and we would love you to join in on the celebrations.

What is TakeOff Festival? TakeOff Festival is England’s leading festival of theatre for children and young people. The festival has been in the North East for 16 years, but this year’s festival reaches out to a record number of venues across County Durham, Washington and Teesside with shows and workshops for schools and families. TakeOff Festival is produced by Theatre Hullabaloo, the North East’s specialist producer of theatre for young audiences.

When is it? The festival runs from Mon 20 – Sun 26 October 2014. This brochure gives you information on when you can bring your family. If you are a teacher who would like to bring a class of students, turn to Page 16.

Who is it for? TakeOff Festival is programmed to bring the joy of live theatre to thousands of children across the North East. Our programme includes shows suitable for children and young people aged 0 – 16 and their families.

What can we expect to see? We have a busy programme of theatre, dance, puppetry and play, from some of the finest theatre companies from the UK specialising in theatre for young audiences.

WHERE IS TAKEOFF FESTIVAL 2014? We want as many children in the North East to access the festival, so we have spread ourselves far and wide, from Durham and Washington down to Middlesbrough. See Page 4 to find out where we are.

This all sounds marvellous, how do we get involved? Have a flick through this brochure, see which shows you think you will enjoy, then look at the How to Book section on Page 2 and book your tickets – easy! If you want to find out more about each of the TakeOff Festival shows, Lucy our TakeOff Festival Manager knows about them all really well, so you can chat to her on 01325 352004.

TakeOff also promotes children’s theatre at all venues in the North East all year round. We’ve put together a roundup of everything happening from Sept – Nov in the second half of this brochure.

1915. Bombs rain down. Sheltering in her dusty cellar, Alice rediscovers her past amongst old lamp shades and moth-eaten christening gowns. Meanwhile her son Alan, a WW1 soldier, makes the same imaginary journey down the rabbit hole to escape the madness of the trenches, returning them both to a wonderland of talking rabbits, mad hatters and savage queens. Based on Lewis Carroll’s literary classic and the real life Alice who inspired it, Metta Theatre bring this charming new play imaginatively to life with live music, puppetry and object manipulation.

“This engaging new play, packed with puppetry and storytelling, is a timely way to enhance the study of The Great War.”

“All of the pupils were spellbound by your production. Your magical, moving play was outstanding.” Teacher
