TakeOff Festival 2015 A Festival of Theatre for YOUNG AUDIENCES

Dear Teacher, We want to tell you about the brilliant TakeOff Festival. We’re England’s leading festival of theatre for children and young people and it’s right here in County Durham. TakeOff Festival bounces into its 29th year with more bold, magical and innovative national and international theatre for the North East’s young audiences. We programme plays suitable for EYFS all the way through to Key Stage 4, as we believe children and young people are the most important audience of all. We would love your school to join us on a theatrical adventure to inspire those young imaginations. Flick through this brochure, decide which show you think your students will enjoy and then get in touch! We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

16 Singers cleverly captures the attention of tiny spectators using breath, rhythm and song, and by blending movement patterns and dance with an intricate, moving set. Director Katherine Morley has brought together a team of artists passionate about creating work for children. Paul Rissman, described by The Herald newspaper in Scotland as “the Pied Piper of classical music”, has written an uplifting score sung by the performers as they move amongst the babies.

An interactive sound and movement performance. The audience are invited to explore three different floor surfaces, interacting with the performers and responding to the textures and sensations through movement, dance and play. Tree tells the story of a man who is hungry and wants to eat a peach. To satisfy his hunger he plants a tree. The tree grows from spring into summer and the man must learn to wait with patience for the tempting peach to ripen. Through physical theatre, poetic language and song, we follow the tree’s journey through the seasons and its growing relationships with animals and humans.

Bear’s life changes forever when, deep in the branches of the tree he hears the munching and a-crunching of a bright green Caterpillar. Bear and Caterpillar become best friends, Caterpillar munching happily through tales of Bear’s younger life being big, strong and fierce. But one day Caterpillar looks sick. Bear fears he will lose his friend but, as if by magic, Caterpillar grows into a beautiful butterfly. Can Bear come to terms with this new version of his friend who flies high above the trees and has stories of his own? Puppetry, live music and beautiful storytelling combine in this charming tale about love, loss and friendship.

A blustery boy lives alone, each day rebuilding his house from the rubbish whipped up by the winds. One day a girl appears and brings him through the gales and the rain. Together they share a summer of blue skies and warm sun. But when the hurricane takes her away how will the boy find his way on his own? This imaginative tale of chaos and calm combines dance, playful physical storytelling and original live music.

An outrageously entertaining, deliciously dark and terribly funny tale from Dennis Kelly, the writer of award-winning West End hit Matilda the Musical. Two terrible twins with a talent for turmoil rule their school with terror and tyranny. That is, until the arrival of a new head teacher with green scaly skin, sharp gnarly fangs, and a long spiky tail… Can the twins save the school from the child-eating Troll? Can they get Brussels sprouts in peanut butter taken off the lunch menu? And most importantly, can naughtiness prevail?

POCKET MERCHANT

Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice… pocket-size. Propeller’s all-male cast brings Shakespeare’s text to life with its invigorating, engaging and sometimes funny approach to the play. Pocket Merchant is an inspiring introduction not only to Shakespeare, but also to the very best of English theatre. The Merchant of Venice is an uncompromising tale of greed and revenge. When Bassanio falls in love with the wealthy Portia, he becomes imprisoned in a bargain with a ruthless moneylender. A pound of flesh is sought in payment, and time is fast running out to untangle the trap of his own making.

WELCOME TO OCTOVILLE

Octoville is festooned with unusual characters, surreal structures and eccentric machinery. Have a conversation with the deeply unpopular puppet Mayor Harold Gobsworth. Consider why Granny Fitch lives in a tree and won't come down, and try to figure out why there are Pterodactyls everywhere! Octoville is partly constructed of discarded objects which creator Marc has given life to. Marc will be in the exhibition to attempt to keep the surreal Octoville residents in order, so your class will have chance to chat to the maker himself. Welcome to Octoville is a living art installation. Book your classes place to see the installation alongside your visit to the theatre.

Who are Theatre Hullabaloo? Theatre Hullabaloo is the North East’s specialist producer of theatre for young audiences. Alongside organising the annual TakeOff Festival, we also make plays and tour them across the UK. We reach more than 15,000 children and young people every year. As well as presenting our shows in theatres, we also bring them into schools and support teachers to bring quality theatre to their students and develop Artsmark and Arts Award.

OUR NEW THEATRE In Spring 2017 Darlington will welcome a brand new theatre space designed for young audiences. The new theatre will include: a 150 seat studio theatre, family cafĂŠ, creative play spaces and rehearsal spaces. There will be a busy programme of shows and workshops throughout the year from tots to teens.
