Bare Bodkin Theatre Company brings Peter Duffy’s powerful theatrical performance of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem The Great Hunger to the Theatre Royal for one night only. This production has been touring the country for the past year to popular and critical acclaim. Generally considered to be Patrick Kavanagh’s finest work, The Great Hunger sharply delineates a life of economic and imaginative privation. A large part of the hunger the poem describes is sexual; its protagonist is bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire who has spent years at his mother’s beck and call. When she finally dies aged 91, he himself is 65 and has missed the boat in terms of finding a wife and having a family of his own, a source of acute sorrow and regret to him. World War 1 (1914-1918) saw 210,000 Irishmen serving in the British forces. 35,000 Irish died. A hundred years later, we remember their sacrifice with an evening of music, songs and stories from The Great War – presented by RTE broadcaster and historian Dr. Myles Dungan. “The Great War is renowned for a number of things. Its poetry, the utter carnage it unleashed, the impact it had on the political landscape of Europe - and the music produced during the conflict. A Lovely War celebrates the unquenchable spirit, wry humour and irrepressible melodies of a lost generation, a hundred years after their elders and betters sent them in their millions to fight an immoral war.” – Myles Dungan.

Sarah’s third solo album The Plum Tree and The Rose has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable,” wrote fRoots (UK), while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary” and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.”
