THE GODS ARE ANGRY MISS KERR

Presented by Gary Power Productions Written By Jim Nolan It’s the Jute Factory, it’s the summer of 1956 and it’s the week of the Eucharistic Procession and the Annual Mystery Tour! Against this colourful background, Jim Nolan’s heart-warming comedy celebrates the lives of a community whose fragile dreams are played out in the shadow of what was once a flagship local industry. Acclaimed by packed houses at its 1985 Theatre Royal premiere, The Gods transformed the theatrical landscape of the city and gave birth to an array of unforgettable characters including Albert ‘The Liar’ O’ Brien whose imagined love affair with the film starlet Movita is not the least of his achievements and the endearing simpleton, Janey Mac, whose fearsome protest letter to Pope Pius the Twelfth is provoked by the closure of her beloved Coliseum Cinema. The Gods Are Angry Miss Kerr is part of Waterford’s theatrical history. Don’t miss this chance to make it part of yours! This was Jim’s first play and will feature a cast that includes: Pascal Scott (Sergeant Dick O’Toole of Killinascully fame), David Flynn, Tony Kelly, Jamie Murphy, Katie Honan and Megan Cassidy. Date:

Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 July Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 July Time: 8pm Ticket Price: All tickets €15 on Wednesday nights and €20 all other shows Gary Power Productions will present a second play at this summer. Keep an eye on the Theatre Royal website for details.

PJ GALLAGHER

se

io n

PJ Gallagher has become one of Ireland’s best-loved comedians. He has been an almost permanent fixture on Irish television since Naked Camera arrived to RTE in 2005 and since then he has gone on to make his own series Makin’ Jake, in the USA. Recently he made a documentary, Back in the Saddle, all about his exploits and adventures in his other passion of motorbike racing. He is still racing and hopes to one day make it to the Manx GP. For a man who ambushes people as they go about their everyday business, makes them uncomfortable and mines their embarrassment for laughs, there is something strangely appropriate about PJ Gallagher’s route into comedy. - The Sunday Times Culture Section Date: Sunday 31 July Time: 8pm Ticket Price: €20

Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth €2.4 billion directly a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, for 2010 is €69.15 million, that’s less than €1 a week for every household. So, at the end of your next great theatre performance, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
