Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Directed by Adrian Noble
“Viciously funny” Guardian “It’s the greatest slanging match in the theatrical canon” Daily Mail “Not just meticulously plotted but psychologically acute … a masterpiece” Daily Telegraph Edward Albee’s scintillating masterpiece takes place during the course of one brutal and hilarious night when George, a college professor, and his wife, Martha, invite a young couple back for late-night drinks after a faculty party. As the alcohol flows, George and Martha’s sadistic game-playing and vitriolic verbal scrapping reaches its climax in a momentous revelation. First staged on Broadway in 1962, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was soon established as one of the great plays in post-war American drama, winner of the Tony and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Play. Its reputation was further enhanced by Mike Nichols’s 1966 film adaptation, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, which won five Oscars. Clare Higgins is one of the greatest actresses of her generation, the winner of three Olivier Best Actress Awards. She won the 2003 Theatre World

Kafka’s Dick by Alan Bennett Directed by David Grindley
“Unquestionably one of Alan Bennett’s funniest plays...a triumph of comic audacity” Daily Telegraph “I found myself helpless and hopeless with laughter” Evening Standard “Brilliantly entertaining” Sunday Times Insurance man Sydney and his wife Linda are leading perfectly ordinary lives in 1980s suburban Leeds when the esteemed (and long-dead) author Franz Kafka suddenly pitches up. With the great writer is his (also long-dead) friend Max Brod, he who ignored Kafka’s dying wish that all his work should be burned and, as a result, made him one of the best-known writers of the 20th century. Things get even stranger when Kafka’s father, Hermann, arrives and threatens to reveal some very personal details about his son, details that Kafka would prefer kept private... First performed at the Royal Court in 1986, this brilliant flight of fantasy shows Alan Bennett at his most overtly comic. Matthew Kelly is one of the UK’s best-loved actors, winner of an Olivier Award for Of Mice and Men.

Hay Fever
by Noël Coward Directed by Lindsay Posner “Transforms triviality into comic perfection” Daily Telegraph “The flawless structure of the crisply precise dialogue” Guardian “Sheer comic bliss...a symphony of near continuous laughter” Sunday Express “A high-class giggle” Independent on Sunday The Bliss family - Judith, the once glittering star of the London stage; David, an egocentric novelist; and Sorel and Simon, their two Bohemian adult children – are incapable of sharing the spotlight. Unconventional, risqué, and often downright rude, they are everything a respectable English family should not be.
Born into a theatrical family, Felicity Kendal is one of the UK’s most popular actresses. She shot to fame in The Good Life on television and has won numerous awards for her stage work. Her recent visits to Bath have included Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking, Beckett’s Happy Days and Coward’s Fallen Angels and The Vortex.
When each member of the family invites a guest to their rural retreat, the unassuming visitors are thrown into a living melodrama. Misjudged meetings, secret seductions and scandalous revelations proliferate during one outrageous weekend in Berkshire.
Simon Shepherd’s many credits include ITV’s Peak Practice, the West End productions of Posh, The Duck House, The Secret Rapture and Art and Born in the Gardens in the 2008 Peter Hall Company Season in Bath.
Noël Coward’s hilarious comedy of bad manners has been a favourite amongst theatregoers ever since it first dazzled London’s West End in 1925.

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Directed by Lucy Bailey
“A trivial play for serious people” Oscar Wilde
This new production of one of the best-known and best-loved of all comedies, boasts one of the most star-studded casts ever seen on the Theatre Royal stage. The Importance of Being Earnest will visit Bath direct from a West End run over the summer. The dependable John Worthington, J.P., is in love with prim-and-proper Gwendolyn Fairfax. His friend, the upper-class playboy, Algernon Moncrieff, is in love with Cecily Cardew. But both Gwendolyn and Cecily are in love with Ernest. Add the magnificently imposing Lady Bracknell, a nanny with a dubious story about a handbag and the result is a delightful entertainment as fresh and funny as when it was first performed in 1895 with a plot that twists and fizzles with some of the finest dialogue to be found in theatre. Nigel Havers and Martin Jarvis revisit the roles of Algernon Moncrieff and John Worthing, J.P respectively having played these parts in Sir Peter Hall’s 1982 production of The Importance of Being Earnest at the National Theatre. Siân Phillips joins them to play Lady Bracknell having recently performed the role to excellent reviews in Washington.
Nigel Havers is familiar to television audiences thanks to recent roles in Downton Abbey and Coronation Street. Siân Phillips has starred on stage in Cabaret, The Age of Innocence and Marlene for which she was nominated for the Olivier and Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Martin Jarvis is well-known for Endeavour and Law & Order: UK. The notable cast also includes Rosalind Ayres (Outnumbered, New Tricks), Niall Buggy (Uncle Vanya, Dead Funny), Christine Kavanagh (Basket Case, Vera), Cherie Lunghi (Passion Play, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and Patrick Godfrey (A Room with a View, The Remains of the Day, Ever After) who played Merriman in the 2002 film adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest. The production is directed by Lucy Bailey (King Lear, Theatre Royal Bath Summer Season 2013; Fortune’s Fool, Dial M for Murder, Titus Andronicus for The Globe ), designed by William Dudley (King Lear, The Mysteries, Fortune’s Fool, Fings Ain’t Wot They Used To Be) and the company writer is Simon Brett (the Charles Paris and Fethering series of novels, The Strangling on the Stage).

ENGLiSH TOURiNG OPERA presents
A Season of Baroque Opera Life on the Moon by Joseph Haydn Ottone by George Frideric Handel
2014 OLiViER AWARD WiNNERS FOR OUTSTANDiNG ACHiEVEMENT iN OPERA to finish“ independent on ETO’s Spring 2014 production of Britten’s Paul Bunyan
Fresh from winning the 2014 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, in a category which included Placido Domingo and Joyce DiDonato, English Touring Opera returns to Bath with another season of baroque splendour. These two masterpieces by Handel and Haydn are wildly different. One is lofty and heartbreaking, the other a razor-sharp comedy. Both are performed with the Old Street Band, ETO’s acclaimed baroque period orchestra.
Ottone Handel’s sophisticated comedy Flavio was a recent hit for ETO in Bath. Now the company presents one of the composer’s most successful serious operas, Ottone. Written for the greatest italian singers of the day, Ottone dazzled London with tearful and brilliant arias, many of which are regularly performed in concert. The romantic and tragic tale of a German Emperor in Rome, overcoming battles on land and sea to wed his Byzantine bride, features unusual psychological complexity and a dramatic sea cave setting.
Life on the Moon in its day, fast-moving comedy Life on the Moon (Il mondo della luna) was the most popular of Haydn’s many operas, matching the composer’s virtuosic music with the mischievous wit of Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni.
“English Touring Opera have a sure touch in choosing repertoire: their exhumations of neglected works are always successful” independent on ETO’s
To trick a lecherous miser, an ‘astronomer’ sets up an elaborate charade and tricks him into believing he has flown to the moon. There he is fitted-up and fleeced, to the delight of his family and friends.
”This joyous production by English Touring Opera…makes the most of the music, the characters, and the alternately hilarious and unsettling plot of Handel’s early masterpiece”
Cal McCrystal, the comedy director behind the National Theatre’s One Man, Two Guvnors (see page 14), directs this new production.

RAMBERT ROOSTER
presents
THE iCONiC DANCE TO MUSiC By THE ROLLiNG STONES
The rock’n’roll swagger of the Rolling Stones is brought thrillingly to life in Rooster, Christopher Bruce’s electrifying celebration of the swinging sixties. Sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women perform virtuoso courtship dances to some of the Stones’ most famous tunes, including Not Fade Away, Paint It Black and Little Red Rooster. Four Elements by dance legend Lucinda Childs mixes serene elegance with Jennifer Bartlett’s surreal designs and Gavin Bryars’ hypnotic score. Childs’ minimalist choreography has been described as ‘amplified simplicity, so cleverly does she take a straightforward movement … and weave it into a complex pattern’ (The Times).
Completing the programme is The Strange Charm of Mother Nature, a brand new work by Rambert’s Artistic Director Mark Baldwin. in three movements representing the origin of the cosmos, the dancers fizz with the energy of the miniscule building blocks that created life, the universe and everything. Accompanied by live orchestral music, ranging from JS Bach to igor Stravinsky, this exhilarating programme showcases the diversity and brilliance of Britain’s national dance company.

JAMES LANCE and JOHN GORDON SINCLAIR star in
Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense A new play adapted from the works of P.G. Wodehouse by The Goodale Brothers Directed by Sean Foley
2014 Olivier Award winner for Best New Comedy Join James Lance (I’m Alan Partridge, Teachers, The Book Group ) as the effervescent, aristocratic fool Bertie Wooster and John Gordon Sinclair (The Producers, The Ladykillers West End) of Gregory’s Girl fame as his dutiful valet Jeeves. This hilarious production which is one of the West End’s biggest hit comedies of recent years, layers joke on joke, joy on joy, in a delightful evening of theatrical absurdity featuring P G Wodehouse’s iconic double act. When a country house weekend takes a turn for the worse, Bertie Wooster is unwittingly called on to play matchmaker, but also to steal a silver cow creamer from Totleigh Towers. Naturally, the ever-dependable Jeeves is there to prevent Bertie from making a fool of himself in front of a cast of Wodehouse’s finest characters.
Laugh out loud funny, Perfect Nonsense is the comedy of the year and perfect for a preChristmas treat.
“ I suspect that Wodehouse himself would have loved this production ... it captures the dotty, sunlit innocence of his work with panache. “ Daily Telegraph “Devour every last drop of this Wooster sauce with relish “ Sunday Telegraph

The 25-year marriage of Alice, a resting actress, and Edgar, an old soldier, would be perfect - if they didn’t want each other dead. The once great King Berenger the First is 400 years old, on his last legs and ruling over a decaying kingdom. Now the party is over and the end is nigh. in his youth he reigned over millions of subjects, battled thousands of enemies, single-handedly split the atom and invented the car. He even controlled the weather. But now the heater is broken, the cows have stopped producing milk and the sun is late. While his two queens bicker about whether he should be made aware of his imminent demise, it is clear that Berenger won’t surrender without a fight. But the fact is, this is the last day of his life and the end of the play could mean the end of everything.
Jeremy Sams is an award-winning director, writer, translator, orchestrator, musical director, film composer and lyricist. His many translations include Les Parents Terribles, The Miser and Mary Stuart for the National Theatre and The Threepenny Opera for the Donmar Warehouse. Laurence Boswell is the Artistic Director of the ustinov Studio where his seasons of uK premieres have received huge national acclaim. He is a multi award-winning director who has directed a number of hits in the West End and on Broadway. He was also Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre Notting Hill. He is an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
ionesco’s darkly hilarious and sparklingly witty comedy makes fun of all the things that tragedy usually takes seriously. Eugène ionesco was one of the greatest innovators in European drama. His incomparable works include The Chairs, Rhinoceros and The Bald Soprano and he influenced a generation of playwrights.

Jo Baker is a former bookseller whose family was in service. “A triumph: a splendid tribute to Austen’s original but, more importantly, a joy in its own right, a novel that contrives both to provoke the intellect and, ultimately, to stop the heart” Guardian LUNCH: Oven-baked salmon, roasted new potatoes and seasonal greens with a lemon beurre blanc; sticky toffee pudding; coffee V: Roasted Mediterranean vegetables and goat’s cheese wellington with a Provençale sauce

In the Footsteps of Jane Austen - a visit to...
The Strangest Family
Basildon Park
(Netherfield Park in Pride and Prejudice) This beautiful 18th century house near Reading, surrounded by park land, is frequently used as a film location. In 2005, in Pride and Prejudice, it became Netherfield Park, home of Mr Bingley and the setting for his ball. In 2013 it became Grantham House in the Downton Abbey Christmas special. Owned by the National Trust, the house is filled with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture. After coffee we will be given an introductory talk about the filming and then have time to look around the house and grounds.
The Private Life of George III with Janice Hadlow George III was monarch throughout Jane Austen’s life. During his reign he aimed to be a new kind of king and was determined to revolutionise his private life. He and Queen Charlotte did everything they could to raise their 13 sons and daughters in a climate of loving attention. In this intensely moving account, Janice Hadlow shows how his attempts to create a happy, harmonious family were doomed by a combination of his periods of ‘madness’ and their children’s contrary wishes.

Digging For Richard III:
How Archeology Found the King with Mike Pitts The discovery of the remains of Richard III in a car park in Leicester in February 2013 excited global media attention. In this new book, Mike Pitts, the editor of British Archaeology, uncovers the people behind the story, both the Richard III Society and the University of Leicester. He gives riveting descriptions of how the clues were assembled and forensically pieced together. The photographs of the dig, artworks of the skeleton, and maps and historic documents also set the scene. His narrative of the project that blended passion, science and luck, has resulted in an account worthy of the finest detective fiction. LUNCH: Beef and brandy stroganoff with rice and seasonal vegetables; warm apple and pear crumble with Calvados cream; coffee.
