60 Second Interview How do you know TBP/ Nick Barton?
I got to know Nick about 3 years ago when we were looking to build a global alliance with The Barton Partnership. Given the ties between Australia and the UK are so strong it made sense for both parties to share knowledge and expertise in order to give our clients and candidates the best coverage across our chosen markets.
Tell us about 325?
325 Consulting was formed 5 years ago to focus on individuals who have spent at least 2 years with a branded consulting firm. Our clients are typically ex-consultants now working in industry or consulting firms themselves and we help them hire both on a permanent and interim basis. Probably 80% of the roles we work on sit in the Strategy job family but wo we also work on Transformation, Pricing, Corporate Development, Innovation and General Management roles too.
What made you take the decision to stay in Sydney and why would you recommend starting a career in Australia?
I came here in 2001 to watch the British Lions Rugby tour and fell in love with the city so never left! My brother had already moved here in 1997 and once I saw the lifestyle that was on offer I just couldn’t leave - my sister also saw the light and moved here with her family several years ago too (I have seen this pattern repeated many times). Given all my family is now here Sydney is now very much home. From a career perspective Australia is an easy place to just slot into - and individuals with mature foreign markets experience, such as the UK, find it relatively easy to find impactful roles here as these skills and experience can help close the gap between Australia and the rest of the world (Australia is often quoted as lagging behind the US and UK markets by several years).
In your view what do you see as the key differences between the London and Sydney Strategy market?Strategy market?
The obvious one is size - we have a population of 23 million people, so about a third the size of the UK. The Australian strategy job market is dominated by Sydney and Melbourne (with Sydney being probably double the size of Melbourne) with the lesser markets of Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra having a scattering of opportunities. Sydney tends to have more global brands and is the Financial Services hub for Australia, with 2 of the big 4 domestic banks based here together with all of the major insurance players and all of the global banking offices.
How has this partnership between TBP and 325 Consulting been helping clients and candidates? I think it has given individuals the opportunity to learn the landscape prior to an international move and then have a soft landing once they arrive. It has also given our clients priority access to pre-qualified individuals based in foreign markets that they otherwise could not get to. I also think the sharing of intellectual property between the two firms has helped us become better at what we do too.
What is your best advice to candidates who are looking to move from London to Sydney?
Spend time in the market you want to move to as this alone will make you stand out from the 90% of people who say they would like to move but in the end do not. The best sequence for me is to talk to the local market recruiter to test appetite for your skills, then book a 2-3 week trip to the chosen destination and spent the time meeting as many people as you can to gain momentum with your search. You will may have to make a second trip to close of your prefered role or else may be able to conclude a process remotely from there but putting in the effort up front in our experience gets the result.
What do you find to be the most interesting trend in the Strategy ARENA today in Australia?
The main one it that we have consistently seen corporates building bigger in-house teams to reduce their reliance on external consulting firms and also to build a pipeline of future leaders for their organisation. We have also seen strategy roles broadening to not only cover the strategic planning process but also get more deeply involved in the topics such as pricing, big data and customer loyalty.
