ack to school is typically a stressful time of the year for everyone, and I mean everyone! Mums are busy trying to ensure that kids have what they need for school, including uniforms, shoes, stationery, lunches, after-school care . . . the list goes on! For kids, we know it’s a fact of life that they must go to school, but how many of you have seen the dramatics of those who don’t want to go, or those changing schools and might not be with their friends – it’s a nerve-wracking time for all. Perhaps you don’t have kids, but know with schools back comes increased traffic on the roads and your holiday drive time of 30 minutes is back to 45.

21 Beautiful Skin: Hydrate, Nourish and Protect
We have pulled a selection of back to school ideas together for lunches, calming the kids down, and also supporting their immunity. A new year at school often means new bugs – and you know once those bugs are at home, everyone is going to suffer. Keeping the kids supported with multivitamins and probiotics needn’t be a challenge with some brands offering flavourful, chewable supplements.

For the mums out there, make sure you’re looking after yourself too. A good multivitamin and maybe even a skin care treat will keep you feeling great and on top of those energetic “bundles of joy”. And if, like me, you find your morning commute longer due to the extra school traffic, find a calming way to deal with the stress. I find music ideal; it doesn’t help the drivers who cut me off, but it certainly helps me to not wind down the window and tell them!

any parents worry about their teens being led astray and falling victim to drugs and alcohol, but meanwhile remain unaware of the addiction risks for kids lurking in popular drinks. Worldwide, medical experts and campaigners say legislation is urgently needed to regulate some beverages with age limits, just like cigarettes and alcohol, and ban them from schools. We’re talking about energy and sports drinks. Sold alongside soft drinks in schools, supermarkets, gas stations, dairies and everywhere in between, their youth following is associated with what young people perceive as “cool” – extreme sports, gaming, rock concerts, burnouts, beach fun … but what about the potential consequences? Apart from contributing to diabetes and obesity in youth, a US study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, which gathered data from 2793 adolescents across 20 schools, found an association between consumption of energy/ sports drinks and higher consumption of other addictive substances such as sugary drinks, cigarette smoking and screen media time.

CAFFEINATED/GUARANA ENERGY DRINKS
Research has linked energy drinks with increased stress, nervousness, anxiety, headaches, insomnia and reduced academic performance. They were even found to cause hallucinations, tremors and seizures. It is no wonder! Caffeine can linger in the blood for up to 14 hours. Some brands contain more caffeine than two espressos, and almost 13 teaspoons of sugar in a 250ml can. This is a major health risk for kids and teens with existing and (usually) undiagnosed heart conditions, diabetes or mood and behavioural disorders. Despite being targeted at the 18 to 34-year-old generation, teachers report some kids have an energy drink for breakfast. They become very hyperactive, can't sit still and can't concentrate. At the end of the school day, they are fractious, tired and still unable to concentrate. Peter Rogers, professor of biological psychology at Bristol University and a leading expert on caffeine, says: “Caffeine creates a state of dependency where if one stops taking it one feels tired, fatigued, headachy, and studies show this happens in children as well.”
HEALTHY DRINKS
WIDE AWAKE AND DRUNK
SPORTS DRINKS
Energy drinks also appeal to teens who watch young adults mixing them with alcohol. In Britain, a third of young people who consume energy drinks say they've mixed them with alcohol. But what happens when sedatives (alcohol) and stimulants (coffee) collide in this new breed of beverage that was never designed to be sipped?
With 10 teaspoons of sugar in some brands, kids don’t need sports drinks for any reason.
All drugs of abuse stimulate dopamine, the neurotransmitter associated with reward, as do both caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine makes a person feel less drunk, so they drink more, but it does not decrease the amount of alcohol consumed. As the adolescent brain is still developing, especially the prefrontal cortex which determines decisionmaking and impulse control, this “speedball” mix can lead to lethal blood alcohol levels, a false sense of security and, later in life, alcoholism and depression. Meanwhile, mature drinkers may worry more about heart palpitations and blood pressure!
ENERGY DRINK ABUSE Another concerning trend is the abuse of energy drinks. A 2011 study from the International Journal of Eating Disorders found people are using energy drinks "to increase energy levels and suppress appetite", despite the fact that "the medical repercussions of the misuse of these substances can be significant". For the average person, caffeine and artificial sweetener overuse can lead to serious health problems, while excessive fluid consumption can result in electrolyte imbalances and seizures. For someone with an eating disorder, restricting nutrients and possibly also abusing laxatives or vomiting, as well as taking energy drinks, the potential for complications is huge.
As for adults, University of Cape Town exercise and sports science Professor Tim Noakes told British Medical Journal that: “If they avoided the sports drinks they would get thinner and run faster.” Once in the body, these dye-filled drinks – essentially soft drinks without carbonation – acidify the cellular environment, restricting oxygenation of cells while limiting ATP energy production from the mitochondria. Medical advisor to the Boston Marathon and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School Dr Arthur Siegel, also told BMJ there is no evidence dehydration ever killed a marathoner. According to BMJ, 16 marathoners have died and more than 1600 became critically ill due to overhydration and hyponatremia – too little sodium in the blood caused by drinking too much fluid before and during the marathon. Sports drinks can contribute to overhydration, and don’t appear to prevent hyponatremia. Instead: For athletes, liquid electrolyte replacement without paying for the sugar, flavour, water or container. Add drops to your own water bottle.
SOFT DRINKS, SACHET
DRINKS, CORDIALS AND FLAVOURED MILK
Most are high in sugar, which has no nutritional value, is addictive (more than cocaine), and damages body and brain function. A young child’s addiction to sugar can lead to other addictions later in life, so if kids prefer these as everyday drinks, encourage water instead. Carbonated drinks are high in acid that is harder on teeth than sugar, so don’t be fooled by sugar-free. Nor do we need artificial sweeteners and food dyes.
WATER – believe it or not, some kids “don’t like” water, the cornerstone of life! Admittedly some tap water tastes foul, but all humans should drink mostly water, and parents need to find ways to make this happen for their kids. Install a water filter, collect rainwater (could be fun), add a dash of lime/lemon juice or a sliced strawberry, keep a water container in the fridge, plus each family member can have their own drink bottle, chilled overnight to take tomorrow. HERBAL/FRUIT TEAS – hot, or cold with ice cubes, mint and lemon. Try apple and cinnamon, strawberry, peach, mango, peppermint or licorice. Freeze in ice cubes and whizz into a slushy. RAW JUICES – No juicer? Blend ingredients and strain through a muslin cloth or stocking. Wash, scrub (no peeling) and remove leafy ends first. Try 2 whole apples cut in half, slice of pineapple, 4 carrots, half a beetroot, and slice of ginger root. Brilliant way to use excess produce or fruit ripening too quickly. Juices can also be frozen for ice blocks. Manual citrus squeezer? You wouldn’t eat six oranges in one sitting, so best not to juice that many. Water down and add ice. SMOOTHIES – A frozen (peeled first) banana or an avocado adds creaminess. Add powdered protein or superfoods for kids who are picky eaters and may not get nutrients from raw vegetables. The artificial sweetener aspartame is found in “diet”, “light” and “sugarfree” products. A neurotoxin and carcinogen, it converts to formaldehyde in the body. Also avoid saccharin, acesulfame-K and cyclamate. High fructose corn syrup is a highly refined artificial sweetener that packs the pounds on faster than table sugar, and increases LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. Blue, red and yellow food dyes have been linked to cancers, chromosomal and thyroid damage.

no drink with the meal is best. Drink before, or an hour after, a meal – spring water, coconut water and green teas are good choices.
Brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and even brain cancer are on the rise. Fortunately, people are finally beginning to realise that all disease starts in the gut. Yes, what we eat in our lunchbox today impacts on what our brain can or cannot do – today, tomorrow, and later in life.
And what about lunch itself? A basic rule for a healthy lunch is to simply substitute. For example, instead of a bread sandwich try a vege wrap. What if you are a grazer who prefers snacks rather than big meals? Instead of that cookie made with refined ingredients, substitute with raw nuts, seeds and goji berries. Even an apple or a few grapes will satisfy sugar cravings. Walnuts are especially good for the brain – they even look like a brain – or try celery sticks (excellent for the brain) with almond nut butter.
o you have a healthy brain? How fast are you able to think? How is your memory? Can you remember details and names? All of this depends on the health of your brain.
Research supports that keeping those alkaline levels up is important. So how do we do this with our lunchbox? First,

beating bulge
the back-to-school
Most of us expect our waistlines to pay the price for Christmas partying come January, but surprisingly it’s the period after the summ er break that can do the most damage, according to nutritionist and naturo path CLIFF HARVEY. Once the kids go back to school, lowered activity levels and the desire to eat more comfort foods can add up to a waistline disast er. Putting some simple nutritional habits in place now, can improve the way we look, feel and perform – and help to beat the back-to-school bulge.
HAVE A GREEN SMOOTHIE FOR BREAKFAST Breakfast can be one of the hardest meals to do well. A cooked breakfast of eggs and vegetables is a great option, but how many of us have time? Often we end up reaching for the toast and jam, or breakfast cereals, which are simply too high in carbs and sugar. One option is to blend up a green smoothie using the multi-ingredient NuZest Good Green Stuff and adding a protein powder (NuZest’s Clean Lean Protein), a quality healthy fat choice (coconut milk or a little almond butter), and berries. This meal is full of vitamins and minerals and contains healthy fats and protein that will help you feel fuller for longer. Best of all, it can be made in minutes.
SNACK ON A SMOOTHIE Whether it’s to avoid an energy crash or because you can’t resist afternoon tea with the kids, the 3pm slump can knock us off track. A smoothie can help to fill this gap, and provide the fuel to stop you reaching for the crackers, chocolate or wine later! Try blending up one big smoothie in the morning and dividing it in two. Have one half for breakfast and save the other half for snack attacks.
UP YOUR PROTEIN Protein helps us to feel fuller and avoid sugar cravings. Eggs, nuts and seeds, lean meats and protein powders should be included at every meal. It has been shown that higher protein diets help to support weight management.
EMBRACE GOOD FATS Avocado, macadamia oil, olive oil, nuts and seeds, egg yolks and the naturallyoccuring fats in meats and fish help the body burn fat. Like protein, good fats help you avoid cravings.
AVOID THE WHITE STUFF
SUMMER BLAST INGREDIENTS þþ 100 ml coconut milk or cream þþ 200 ml cold water þþ 2 scoops Clean Lean Protein Smooth Vanilla or Wild Strawberry þþ ½ banana þþ 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
One simple rule that encourages good eating habits is to limit or avoid white foods – sugar, flour, rice and other grains are rapidly digested and can encourage weight gain.
MAKE DOUBLE PORTIONS
METHOD Put the liquids into a blender first, followed by the Clean Lean Protein. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
One of my “go-to” tips is to double up on dinner portions at night so you have a ready-made lunch for the following day. This side-steps the midday panic of wondering what’s for lunch – which often leads to poor food choices.

KEEP THOSE CRAVINGS
T
By RACHEL DAWSON Diploma of Nutrition & Herbal Medicine
under control
here are many facets to weight management, and each individual manifests an array of reasons from psychological to physiological causes – most often a combination of both – which hinder or speed success. Part of getting the basics under control is making sure you have options that lead to making better choices. Make sure there are only healthy, nutritious snack foods and meals at home, or at work. Eat sensibly and regularly to prevent cravings and impulsive or binge eating. Programme yourself to make the things you do every day into exercise – it doesn’t have to be hard. Portion size and meal frequency are important factors in getting the balance right. Reducing the size of your main meals and eating bite-sized healthy snacks in between can go a long way to reducing excess weight.
After evaluating the diet, try supplementing with nutrients like chromium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin D, as these can be helpful in balancing blood sugar levels. If cravings are still problematic, then herbs like hoodia and African mango are thought to interrupt the hormonal messaging that tells you that you are hungry, thereby helping break the hormonal hunger cycle, reducing cravings and giving a feeling of energised fullness. Regular exercise is of the utmost importance as it helps to support the production of lean muscle mass. As muscle is more metabolically active than fat, you will be burning more calories, even when at rest. If you can’t get to the gym, opting to walk instead of drive, taking the stairs instead of the lift, and going for a walk or a run during lunch breaks are a few examples of how to get more exercise into your day.
Many people struggle with cravings that develop towards the late afternoon. These cravings occur due to a drop in blood sugar levels a few hours after eating lunch. A lunch high in refined carbohydrates (including pasta, bread and rice) and low in protein (such as fish, eggs, poultry, lentils, and beans) or fibre will cause a spike in insulin levels. Blood sugar levels then drop rapidly so the body thinks it needs to refuel to keep the energy levels up, resulting in cravings. For many, getting cravings under control is the hardest part of successful weight management.

STRETCHMARKS
Stretchmarks occur as a result of tears in the dermis (middle layer of skin), and your chance of getting them depends on genetics, diet, hormones and skin moisture/elasticity. The last two are where Dolphin Clinic can help. Its Stretchmark Prevention massage oil contains pure essential oils and vegetable oils that support hormonal balance and soften the skin to allow it to stretch naturally.
Remember what you put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream.

et up, kids to school, hit traffic, off to work, pick kids up, take them to sports … it’s no surprise so many of us resort to eating on the run – just for the sheer relief of not having to then start cooking at 7.30 at night! While fast food is convenient, most times you will find there is a gap in the nutrition it provides. For many of us, this becomes a bit of a routine, often creating nutritional deficiencies that remain with us throughout the year. To keep up with this fast-paced world we live in, it is good to supplement with a well-thought-out multivitamin and mineral programme, to help keep you on an even keel when you are cutting corners due to time constraints or lack of energy. When elimination organs of the body such as kidneys or liver don’t function effectively, there is a downside to the body in the form of stored toxicity,

generally placed into fat cells. When the body signals not to burn those toxic fats, it can do so by down-regulating the thyroid gland, which in turn upregulates the adrenal glands, causing the body to stress. Weight gain is the result, and if you look around you, you are not the only one cutting corners. The additional adrenaline now being pumped into the body will eventually leave you with adrenal fatigue – the first sign of which is, you do not want to get out of bed in the morning and you’ll find yourself begging “please God give me another 15 minutes of sleep”! Your body begins to run on sugar and cravings to supply more of this fuel, which tends to drive you back into the cycle of eating high-sugar foods. If you find yourself out of time and cutting corners, Multi Zone can help to keep a more natural vitality, energy and wellbeing for you and your family throughout the year. Multi Zone packs an extra punch, as not only does it have the necessary vitamins and minerals in the right form for easy absorption, it is also multi-glandular giving additional support to the organs of the body.
Jump start When cell membranes break down due to a continuous bombardment of toxicity from preservatives, chemicals, sprays, alcohol and electromagnetic pollution, they lose their electrical charge and are like flat batteries. Jump-start your cells again by restoring them with Cell Repair Zone. If you have any pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or lactating, consult a health professional prior to use. AGE-OLD
mood-balancer
One in six New Zealanders will experience serious low mood at some time in their life – and approximately one in seven young New Zealanders will experience it before the age of 24. Life can throw many ups and downs at us – from relationship break-ups to losing a job or a loved one. At these times it is reasonable to feel down, worried or stressed, but sometimes these feelings can linger – becoming severe and persistent. More and more people are seeking a daily supplement to support a healthy outlook during periods of sadness. For centuries, traditional medical herbalists have used extracts of St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) as a natural non habit-forming way to help balance mood and adapt to stress during difficult periods (of one to three months). Thompson’s One-A-Day St John’s Wort 4000 is standardised so each tablet provides 2.2mg hypericin to support a healthy nervous system during times of stress and worry or fluctuating mood.
The
healing touch
The daisy-like yellow flowers of Arnica montana have been used for medicinal purposes since the 1500s. Arnica is still one of Europe’s most popular herbal remedies for sprains, strains, swelling, bruising and arthritic joints, and New Zealanders have also discovered the amazing healing properties of this medicinal plant. Arnica can be used either topically or orally. Topical use is recommended for sore muscles, bruising and swelling, while orally it is ingested in a highly diluted homoeopathic format, such as drops, spray or tiny tablets (pilules). Weleda’s Arnica/Symphytum Comp. assists with the healing of injuries to bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons, such as tendinitis, sprain/ strains, backache, bruises to bony areas, and broken bones. It is an excellent remedy to help relieve occupational overuse or repetitive strain conditions, and can also be used after surgery, including dental and post-labour to assist with tissue healing and speed recovery.

Run free
radicals
OUT OF TOWN
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient found in foods such as kiwifruit, orange/red fruit and vegetables. It acts as an antioxidant in the human body, helping to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are compounds formed when our bodies convert the food we eat into energy; or when we are exposed to free radicals in the environment from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultraviolet light from the sun. The body needs vitamin C – for a number of crucial functions – to: þþ Make collagen, a protein required to help wounds heal, and support healthy skin þþ Improve the absorption of iron from plant-based foods þþ Support a healthy immune system to protect the body from disease þþ Protect against cardiovascular disease (oxidative damage) þþ Support healthy eye function.
WHO IS VITAMIN C SUITABLE FOR? As our bodies are unable to manufacture vitamin C, we must obtain it from our diet. Due to the differences in an individual’s diet and lifestyle, each person’s requirements for vitamin C can differ greatly. People who smoke, don’t eat a balanced diet, or suffer from any form of malabsorption should consider taking an additional vitamin C supplement. Vitamin C is also helpful for individuals needing immune protection during winter. Thompson’s Vitamin C 500mg Chewable Tablets are a pleasanttasting, readily absorbed form of vitamin C, formulated to be gentle on the stomach while maintaining a healthy immune system and supporting general wellbeing.
Did you know? Severe deficiency of vitamin C can lead to scurvy, causing bleeding gums, poor wound healing and bone damage. This is why Captain Cook stocked up on vitamin C-rich limes to stop scurvy running rife among his sailors on long sea voyages. It is also why British sailors became known as “Limeys” in North America.

Outsmart signs of aging
Hormone support for balance
Collagen supplementation is one of the simplest things a person can do to prevent premature aging and promote youthful vitality.
Oestrogen is a hormone important for ovulation and developing our womanly curves.
Collagen is the strong fibre that weaves throughout our body for strength and support to literally hold the body together. Although abundant in our youth, our body’s collagen production typically slows down after the age of 25. As it slows, collagen fibres in the body become brittle and begin to break down, resulting in many of the tell-tale signs of aging. NeoCell Collagen+C™ Pomegranate Liquid combines the potent antioxidant properties of pomegranate’s ellagic acid and green tea’s polyphenols (EGCG) with elderberry and cranberry and the anti-aging benefits of collagen types 1&3 and vitamin C, in a delicious agave nectar-sweetened liquid.

It can also pack excess fat on hips and legs. Clinicians Women’s Hormone Support contains an ingredient called DIM (di-indolylmethane) found in cruciferous vegetables. Research has shown DIM supports the liver to make balanced levels of “good oestrogen”, to support hormonal health and menstrual comfort. Beautiful skin:&
HYDRATE NOURISH PROTECT
Moisturising is top of the list when it comes to caring for your skin. Dry skin ages faster, looks older and is more prone to sensitivity, so it’s important to choose a quality moisturiser rich in natural actives.
Pure plant oils Nourishing pure plant oils, and creams and lotions blended from them, are a great choice to hydrate and nourish the complexion. Plant oils such as rosehip have a similar molecular structure to our skin’s own natural oil (sebum), making them completely compatible with, and readily absorbed by, the skin. All Trilogy moisturisers contain the highest quality plant oils and natural actives. The signature face care range is formulated with certified organic antioxidant complex Rosapene™. With rosehip, tomato, acai and cranberry seed oils, Rosapene™ combines potent antioxidants and high concentrations of essential fatty acids in a powerfully natural beauty oil blend to help improve skin tone, brightness, fine lines and elasticity, and leave skin radiantly healthy and beautifully soft.
Natural SPF In addition to moisturising, sun protection during the day is essential. There are excellent natural ingredients available which protect against damaging UVA and UVB rays – one of the best and easiest to wear is non-whitening zinc oxide. An effective broad spectrum SPF, rather than being absorbed by the skin, zinc oxide remains invisibly on the surface and reflects light away.

beauty guide TO SAY
‘I love you’
By DENISE CARTER (nee Short) Graphic designer
W
anting a clear complexion for your wedding day? Long luscious locks and strong, beautiful nails? These were high on my “to do” list leading up to our big day last month, but I wanted to achieve it all naturally so I also looked great makeup-free afterwards – honeymooning Raro-style.
A MONTH BEFORE – EEEK! THIS IS GETTING REAL.
SIX MONTHS BEFORE
þþ Start exfoliating your skin top to toe once a week. Body brushing is a great way to detox skin, your biggest organ, and get it in great condition. If you need to apply a fake tan, Trilogy Instant Bronzing Gel is natural, and looks amazing.
þþ Drink water, water and more water every day, to help shed weight, give you clearer skin, and flush out toxins. þþ Start taking a multivitamin – I took HealthZone Multi Zone to boost my immunity and keep energy levels high. þþ I had cut my hair short in 2013 and wanted it long for our big day, so I took a supplement containing silica, GO Healthy Hair, Skin & Nails. Also try less washing, blow-drying, and heat styling, to give those strands a rest and not create more split ends. Bring out your hair’s natural shine by taking vitamin B – try Lifestream Natural B-Complex. þþ Start exercising (if you haven’t already).
THREE MONTHS BEFORE Up the ante on exercise and invest in a personal trainer, or train for an event (I ran in Round the Bridges) to get you motivated to lose excess kgs before your final dress fitting.
þþ Not sleeping well? Too much “to do” on your mind can stress a brideto-be out. Try taking magnesium, which helps relax mind and muscles (from all that strenuous exercise), or SleepDrops to support a good night’s sleep.
Detox – eat fresh fruit, veges and protein. Cut out gluten, refined sugars, dairy and caffeine. If you need help with recipes or food menus try a 7-day Detox kit.
THE BIG DAY If wedding nerves are getting the better of you, have a bridesmaid carry Rescue Remedy so you smile, rather than trip down the isle! The beaming face of your husband-to-be (because you look so damn irresistible) will be well worth all the effort!
þþ Sweating it out in a hot yoga class helps remove toxins, and slow stretching is a calm in all the craziness. þþ Make an intensive home remedy hair treatment with Lifefoods Organic Coconut Oil. Rub into dry hair, put a shower cap on or wrap in cling wrap, and leave for several hours. Coconut oil makes a great natural (and cheap) eye-makeup remover too!
TWO WEEKS BEFORE Wild hen’s parties can take their toll. Look after your liver with HealthZone Liver Zone to combat nasty pimple surprises from alcohol and chocolate. If constipated from bridal shower treats or too much salty food, try HealthZone Bowel Zone to flush everything out (you need bathroom access with this one). FEBRUARY/MARCH 2015 • HEALTH 2OOO

Calcium from the sea It is one of the most vital and important minerals in our body – yet it is estimated that 90 percent of New Zealand women at some time do not meet their recommended daily calcium intake. Calcium is critically important for healthy bones and teeth, and the proper functioning of the heart, and the amount we need varies considerably at different stages of our lives. For instance, our bones increase in strength and density from childhood, through puberty until our mid-20s. Bone mass increases by about 10 times through puberty and adolescence, and then remains stable until about age 50 in men and until menopause in women. Milk and dairy foods are among the most easily accessible sources of calcium – a 250ml glass of milk contains about 300mg calcium. Other calcium-rich foods are sardines, prawns, nuts, tofu and vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and bok choy. An adequate calcium intake for most people is around 1000mg a day. There are a number of factors that affect calcium absorption. Vitamin D and calcium work together, with vitamin D (from sunlight) helping to increase the absorption of calcium. However, smoking and too much caffeine, salt or protein can cause calcium to be lost from the body.
Lifestream Natural Calcium is an exciting option – a breakthrough in calcium supplements unlike any other common source. It is an incredible 31-34 percent pure calcium, and is plant-derived, therefore suitable for people of all ages, vegans and vegetarians. It comes from a sea vegetable called Lithothamnium calcareum found in the pristine waters off the coast of Iceland.
LIFESTREAM NATURAL CALCIUM: þþ 300mg of elemental calcium per capsule þþ Contains many naturally occurring mineral co-factors including magnesium, boron and zinc þþ Highly absorbable due to its porous structure and natural calcium/ magnesium ratio of 10:1 – unique among calcium sources þþ Certified organic, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and GE-free þþ Harvested in small amounts in a traditional and ecologically sustainable way þþ Comes in capsules and pure, almost tasteless powder to add to smoothies and baking to increase daily calcium intake.
Women over age 35, pregnant women, growing children and teens, the elderly and people who have a limited dairy food intake are among those who need to be conscious of getting their full calcium needs daily from the food they eat and other sources.

Rediscover joy through health
Sometimes our multi-tasking, fast-paced lives can become overwhelming. Stress and anxiety levels rise and sleep quality diminishes, leading to physical and mental exhaustion. Eventually even small problems can seem insurmountable and coping with daily life becomes increasingly difficult. Somewhere along the way the joy of living can simply get lost in the mess. Sleep difficulties are becoming increasingly common in today’s hectic, stressful world. A vicious cycle is created whereby increased anxiety and stress through the day can make sleep elusive at night, and a lack of quality sleep contributes to stress and frayed nerves during the day. Over time this can take a significant toll on health and seriously undermine quality of life. During these times particular nutrients especially magnesium, along with B vitamins and vitamin C are rapidly depleted, and a lack of these nutrients further impairs our ability to adapt to stress, maintain energy levels and ward off nervous tension. Depleted magnesium levels mean your stress responses can be triggered faster, contributing to irritability and over-reacting. It is therefore crucial during times of mental or physical
stress to offset these losses and bolster immunity by maintaining vital nutrient levels through healthy eating and supplementation. Natural remedies have long been used for their tonic affects on the nervous system, and their ability to improve stress tolerance and support healthy sleep patterns. Magnesium is vital for optimal adrenal activity and assists with the maintenance of the nervous system, cardiovascular system and bone health. Good Health Magnesium Ultra™ is a high-strength formula that has superior absorption because it does not contain magnesium oxide. This makes it fast-acting and effective for relaxing muscles and soothing nervous tension. It has the added bonus of supporting sleep. For those battling daytime stress, poor sleep and exhaustion the nervous system needs to be nourished and rebalanced. Magnesium Ultra™ provides a high-potency therapeutic dose of four highly absorbable forms of magnesium, and Vitamin D and B6 for increased absorption.
If you have any pre-existing medical condition, consult a health professional prior to use. Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional. Use in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise.

ave you noticed the buzzword on the streets is yoga? This ancient practice originated in India, yet now stands centre stage in Western cultures. There are great reasons for this. Yoga is unique because it includes the trifecta of strength, stretch and 3D movements (curved patterns not flat planes like most gym exercises). Poses are guided by breath, with the bonus of meditation. Like me, yoga multi-tasks – a big drawcard as time these days is gold. I have sifted through multiple exercise regimes, and yoga seems to be the most effective in managing body, mind and soul needs. As a health practitioner dealing with thousands of symptoms and injuries, I see a common thread looping its way through daily life ... stress and sitting. Sitting leads to bad posture, which poses a threat as serious as smoking.
It creates "Gorilla" posture, which compresses organs, spine, joints, and adversely effects the brain and immune system. Sitting on flat surfaces (2D) and walking on flat surfaces all day increases the risk for most disease processes – 70 percent of the modern world sits 8+ hours a day. Our playful 3D bodies were not meant to do this! Stress compromises your immune and digestive systems and puts muscles in lockdown due to your body’s release of cortisol when threat is interpreted via thoughts. Most of my patients claim stress dominates the majority of their days. If you are to thrive in the 2000s, management is key! So herein platforms the magic of yoga through stretch and strength poses – it escorts blood, oxygen and space into cramped stressed joints, organs and muscles, so they can heal and thrive yet another day. Each pose is fuelled through breath, reducing cortisol and stress hormones. But just like any workout, there are “does and don'ts” to avoid injury as you support and hold your own bodyweight against gravity.
Mastering down dog A master pose combining strength, stretch and 3D movements, it is a demanding pose and becomes "home base” in class. ITS BENEFITS: þþ Spinal traction þþ Organ oxygenation þþ Increased flexibility to hamstrings, calves, feet, hips, shoulders, spine and wrists þþ Reverse gravity benefiting sinuses, organs, thyroid, lungs and bladder. COMMON MISTAKES: þþ Letting the base of your index finger curl off the mat causing compression in your outer wrist; keep hands flat on the mat þþ Straightening legs before hamstrings are flexible, putting your back at risk; keep a soft bend in knees/heels until your hamstrings lengthen easily
Theresa Dobson demonstrates the downward-facing dog pose

superfood
for the future
A superfood is a nutrient-rich food considered especially beneficial for health and wellbeing, and spirulina could well be the mother of all superfoods.
Available in New Zealand for more than 40 years, spirulina is regarded as the most complete food available in the world. In the 1970s the United Nations declared it the best food for the future; it runs the IIMSAM programme using spirulina to assist in the eradication of malnutrition, and as nutritional support for ebola patients in West Africa. There is much research being undertaken to prove the links between organic foods and their bioavailability – the amount of a food or substance absorbed by the body. Spirulina is a single-celled microalgae that grows in water, thrives on sunshine and consumes carbon dioxide. There are more than 40,000 types of single-celled algae, but spirulina is rated the best for its nutrient density, nutrient variety, and its bioavailability. Traditionally, spirulina is a natural dark green colour; a mix of blue from phycocyanin, green from chlorophyll, and orange from carotenoids. It contains more than 40 essential nutrients including protein, calcium, iron, zinc, chromium, iodine, B vitamins, GLA and zeaxanthin, to name a few – all in a nature-perfect combination of form and strength, and alongside other co-factors such as trace elements that enhance absorption.
Lifestream has pioneered the manufacture and distribution of spirulina in New Zealand with a comprehensive range of powders and tablets, including the latest edition Spirulina Blue. Spirulina Blue is high in phycocyanin, vitamin B3, GLA and zeaxanthin. This bioavailable combination makes it the perfect spirulina for people under increased stress, immune compromised, or just needing extra energy. It contains 23 percent of the blue antioxidant phycocyanin – 50 percent more than other spirulinas. Phycocyanin boosts the immune system, supporting its ability to function in spite of stress from environmental toxins and infectious agents. With the added benefit of GLA and vitamin B3, phycocyanin helps to protect the liver and support detoxification. Meanwhile, vitamin B3 is essential for the body’s production of energy and helps with fatigue.

Nature cleanses with care Thoroughly cleansed skin shouldn’t mean depleting moisture, stripping natural oils or disturbing the skin's acid mantle. Many cleansers are formulated with harsh surfactants such as sodium laureth and lauryl sulphate that can strip skin and are known to produce eye or skin irritation. Look for cleansers that gently manage oily, breakout-prone skin, or normal/dry or mature skin – without relying on ingredients commonly found in laundry and heavy duty cleaning products. Natural ingredients often provide the best solutions – there’s the amazing botanical kumerahou, known as “gumdiggers’ soap” to early European settlers in New Zealand. The plant's high saponin content provides a natural foaming action with strong antimicrobial efficacy, while it soothes and locks in moisture so skin retains hydration. This makes it a perfect ingredient in Living Nature’s Purifying Cleanser for combination, oily and acne-prone skin. For normal/dry or mature skin, Vitalising Cleanser's creamier formulation gently removes makeup and impurities without stripping skin of protective oils. It also features kumerahou, moisturising and antimicrobial active manuka honey, avocado oil and macadamia seed oil. Skin's vital moisture is retained, and it is left clean, dewy and soft.

Hands up if you wake up feeling tired – even after a good night’s sleep? The morning can’t possibly commence until you’ve treated yourself with your first flat white.
Macular eye health is a significant issue for one in seven New Zealanders over the age of 50.
Signs of a healthy brain are mental sharpness, clear thinking and focus, and alertness.
Scientific research has identified key nutrients for maintaining the health of this area of the eye. The AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS) examined the role of zinc, vitamins C and E and copper.
Mind Sharp™ is an optimal blend of natural brain-specific nutrients that support healthy brain function.
If you feel constantly tired, stressed, anxious, and run down, chances are your adrenal glands might need some serious TLC. Adrenal glands are the control centre for our bodies which modulate stress. When adrenals are overworked, our bodies find it difficult to handle the simplest daily chore and this can lead to fatigue and weariness. GO Adrenal Support is a comprehensive blend of herbs, vitamins and minerals, designed specifically to tone, support and nourish the adrenal glands, making this the ideal supplement to provide support to those with low adrenal function. It is the ideal supplement for those continually burning the candle at both ends.
