ne of the biggest challenges this time of year is to remain motivated in your health and wellbeing goals. If you have started on a fitness campaign or even a better eating routine, autumn often brings derailment for many different reasons. So now is the time to consider and plan how you will keep going with those goals you worked hard to achieve. Whether they are personal or family, planning is key. Plans around food are very important – as the nights get a little darker, it is easy to fall into the trap of making easy meals that aren’t particularly healthy. Planning food for the week, along with shopping when it’s light, can make it a lot easier to choose the right foods. When it comes to exercise, the cold days are enough to put anyone off going outside. Finding things you can do around the house, such as Pilates, yoga or aerobics videos, can be a way to keep moving. Joining your local gym can provide some motivation as well, especially if done with a friend. Most importantly, ensure that your immune system is as healthy as it can be. With the majority of our immunity being about gut health, having both the right foods and keeping moving are great for our immunity, as are the right supplements. Check out our sections on immunity in the magazine and see what you can do to stay happy and healthy.

Aliens that call humans home
W
hen our health gets out of whack, we usually need to stop blaming the universe and refocus on that which we cannot see – our own amazing inner world. The living microbiota inhabiting the human body (about 1000 species collectively called the microbiome) weigh up to 2.72kg, about twice the weight of the average human brain, and exist in their trillions, outnumbering the cells in our whole body. Your body consists of trillions of micro-organisms, which make up what is called the human microbiome. These little creatures work hard to keep you healthy.

MICRO ORGANISM
N MICROBIO MA M E HU
While getting your head around the reality that you’re a walking, talking bacteria farm swarming from entry to exit is unpleasant, there is good news. Scientists argue that friendly gut microbes are so deeply involved in our bodily functions, they shouldn’t be considered aliens, especially as they have such a vested interest in controlling how our bodies react to foreign particles – the real alien baddies – such as pollution or potential allergens we breathe in and ingest. Most microbiota only live 20 minutes in the intestinal tract, and their short lives are spent helping us have a healthy gut. That is the foundation for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Thanks to our friendly little aliens we can digest food, synthesise vitamins and ward off infection. Our digestive health is intimately linked to our immune, endocrine, circulatory and central nervous systems. Scientists are intrigued by how microbiota influence the immune system. In recent decades, autoimmune diseases have been increasing; microbiome researchers say some of this is due to changes in our bacterial ecosystem – processed food diet, explosion of antibiotic use, and decreasing contact with the microbe-packed natural world of plants and animals. “Our microbiome has changed significantly over the past century, and especially over the past 50 years,” says NYU microbiologist Martin Blaser, who puts much of the blame on widespread use of antibiotics. "These organisms are part of our developmental choreography. They're part of who we are. “We’re losing microbes with each generation; they are going extinct. These changes have consequences.” Recent research on the microbiome has shown that its influence extends far beyond the gut, to the brain. During the past 10 years, studies have linked the gut microbiome to a range of complex behaviours, such as mood and emotion, appetite and satiety, and even learning and memory. Not only does the gut microbiome appear to help maintain brain function, but it may also influence the risk of psychiatric and neurological disorders, including anxiety, depression and autism.
NATURAL INOCULATION Mums pass on a lot more than half their DNA! Good gut health starts with natural birth and breastfeeding. A baby collects their mother’s microbiome as they pass through the birth canal, and in the three to 24 hours after birth, including during breastfeeding. These pioneer bacteria help lay the foundation for an infant’s gut health, and therefore immune system and brain development, and profoundly influence their health through life.
IT’S DEMOCRATIC Gut microbiota interacts with both our innate and adaptive immune systems, directing them how to develop; in turn our immune system can decide what types of microbes we host.
The bottom line We live in a microbial world. Micro-organisms were among the first life forms and are still the greatest biomass on the planet. Gut health affects every aspect of our physical and emotional being – we really are what we eat. The importance of the human microbiome is clear, as changes to intestinal microbiota have been associated with numerous short and long-term health and disease issues such as: Poor sleep Lack of energy
PEACEFUL INNER WORLD
Depression
Our good gut bacteria is often thrown off balance, undermining the body's natural front line of defence and leaving it unable to fight off invading bugs. Since 70 percent of the body's immune system lies in the digestive tract, good gut bacteria is key to maintaining not only a healthy digestive system, and minimising unwanted digestive discomfort, but also to strengthen our immunity.
Immunity to seasonal viruses and bacterial infections (colds/influenza/ tummy bugs, etc) Intestinal/inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's and ulcerative colitis Allergic diseases such as eczema, asthma, food allergy and hay fever – all mediated by the immune system
70%
Diabetes
of your immune system lies in the digestive tract
Obesity Autism Cancer.
CARING FOR OUR INNER WORLD §§ An important source of gut microbial diversity is the number of different plants we eat. Eat a fibre-rich, whole foods diet rich in beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, all of which feed good bugs. Fermented foods, like kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha, miso soup, have all been found to boost gut health. §§ Take daily probiotics (from pro and biota, meaning “for life”) – these healthy, friendly flora can improve your digestive health and reduce inflammation and allergy.

Healthy Kiwi flaxseed oil
Thistle protects liver function
Flaxseed oil is one of the best natural vegetarian plant sources of omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids (EFAs).
St Mary's Thistle has been shown to exert a protective effect on the cells of the liver due to its antioxidant properties, and its essential fatty acids may support aggravated cells.
EFAs are vital for health, but cannot be made in our body, so it is important to get them from quality food or supplements. An unbalanced ratio of omega 3 and 6 is common in Western diets, and implicated in many health conditions. For your daily omega 3 intake add flaxseed oil to your smoothie, yoghurt, cereal, salad dressing or drizzled over vegetables. Good Health Flaxomega™ Flaxseed oil is grown in New Zealand on the fertile Canterbury Plains. It helps support: þþ Heart and cardiovascular health þþ Healthy skin þþ Brain function þþ Healthy mood balance
St Mary's Thistle contains the active constituent silymarin, which helps the liver recover from toxins and normalise serum liver enzymes. It may also help maintain healthy cholesterol levels and manage halitosis (bad breath). Sandra Cabot’s LivaTone Plus contains St Mary's Thistle combined with sulphur-bearing amino acids, B vitamins, folic acid, biotin, antioxidants such as green tea, and vitamins A and C to support liver health and function. Lecithin and broccoli powder aid healthy liver function, and turmeric is used to support healthy bile. Livatone Plus helps rid the body of waste and promotes elimination through its cleansing effect on the bowel.

Regularity Today’s modern lifestyle of stress, poor nutrition and eating on the run can have a huge impact on the optimum health and functioning of our digestive tract. Our gastrointestinal system is vital – when it isn’t functioning optimally it can lead to poor health and general feelings of lethargy. Our skin, appearance, energy and vitality are a reflection of our inner digestive system. Signs and symptoms of poor digestion and bowel health can be wide and varied. Some common ones are fatigue, wind, bloating, abdominal discomfort, irregular and sluggish bowels. Many health conditions can be traced to intestinal problems and over a third of the population regularly suffers from digestive upsets. Not only is having optimal digestion important, efficient elimination is equally as important. One of the most common digestive complaints is sluggish bowels; most people have suffered with it at one time or another. The two main causes are lack of dietary fibre and adequate fluid intake, followed closely with overall poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle.
is key
Having a sluggish bowel, means that fecal matter is in the bowel for longer than necessary; this extra time can lead to excess fermentation which in turn creates gas (boating/wind), and toxins that should have passed with the stool have the chance to be recycled back into circulation. This puts extra strain back on the cleansing organs (predominantly the liver), and compromises their ability to do their jobs effectively. If this isn’t incentive enough to start upping your fibre intake, maybe the last push you need is . . . poor liver function can also show outwardly as skin blemishes and breakouts.
þþ Psyllium husks (fibre) – fibrous husks swell in contact with water to help form bulk within the digestive tract to promote regularity. þþ Inulin – a prebiotic that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon. þþ Probiotics – maintain a favourable balance of good bacteria in the colon to help long-term bowel health and overall wellbeing. Lifestream has made sourcing the above bowel health ingredients convenient with Lifestream BowelBiotics+ powder or capsules to support ongoing bowel health and regularity.
Aside from cleaning up your diet, getting off the couch and increasing your water intake, there are other natural solutions to support a healthy, efficient digestive system.

inter is just around the corner and not only do the colder months put our immune system through its paces, but also a strain on our first line of defence, our skin. The drier, cooler air, more exposure to wind and fluctuations in temperature can leave skin feeling dry, tight, rough and itchy. Extremely dry skin isn’t just a cosmetic emergency, but can exacerbate existing skin conditions. Here are my five top tips for healthy skin all year round. 1 Moisturise daily. Apply natural moisturiser or oil (jojoba, evening primrose and rosehip are great) onto damp skin for optimal moisture. Critical for those with skin conditions. 2 Bring the heat down. Although it can be tempting to have long hot showers, very hot water can dry skin further, so turn it down and ditch abrasive soaps for natural cleansing creams.

3 Drink more fluids. It can be difficult to drink enough during winter, and skin can become dehydrated and dry. As water is essential to deliver nutrients to skin cells and remove toxins from skin, you might notice dull skin, dark circles and breakouts during winter. Aim for eight glasses a day, or try warm water and lemon or herb teas. 4 Keep eating veges. Salad season may be over, but don’t stop eating veges! They are hydrating and provide a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants essential for new skin cells and protection from the elements. Try warm roasted veges in a tossed green salad. Kumara, kale, pumpkin and carrots all contain beta carotene that not only supports skin moisture, but gives it a healthy glow. For an extra healthy glow, try astaxanthin. It accumulates in the skin where it promotes moisture and glow. 5 Take essential fatty acids. The skin has a layer of fats very dependent on nutritional intake of essential fatty acids, in particular the long chain omega 6 derivative, gamma linolenic acid (GLA). These fatty acids sit on the top of the skin, essentially locking moisture in. The best supplements to help promote a healthy lipid layer and thereby moisturised, supple skin are those that supply high GLA; evening primrose, blackcurrant, borage and hemp seed oils.
Skin tells story of beauty within
The definition of beauty is diverse, and only you can choose how you define it. But when searching for a prospective mate, we are encouraged to look more to inner beauty, and inner health. You can tell a lot about a person’s health and wellbeing by their skin; a glowing complexion can indicate good health. As a society we are educated more than ever on how important it is to get the right nutrients to fuel our bodies for energy, along with the right oils and nutrients to slow the physical signs of aging. We are becoming mindful of what we put into our bodies, as our skin will tell the story, hence the saying “you are what you eat”. This goes hand-in-hand with the search for inner health and
beauty as we strive to have the right nutrition and hydration. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is key, but as much as we try, our diet doesn’t always contain all that is required to slow the physical signs of aging. The word collagen comes from the Greek word “kolla” meaning glue, and the suffix "gen" denotes producing. Collagen is the main structural protein of various connective tissues in the body. As we age, our collagen production slows and elastin fibres break, thicken, stiffen, clump together and lose their elasticity. It makes sense to add collagen to your daily regime to regenerate skin nutrients as you age. Hyaluronic acid is needed to bind collagen, and they work together for skin elasticity, skin plumping, skin repair and healthy hair and nails.

The main job of hyaluronic acid is to regulate and repair cell growth; attracting water to the skin, it does not prevent skin from aging, but may minimise the appearance of wrinkles. The body continually breaks down and recycles collagen and hyaluronic acid. Excessive exposure to the sun, injury and nutritional deficiencies may reduce the availability of collagen and hyaluronic acid and result in connective tissue degradation, which manifests as wrinkles, thinning cartilage, brittle hair and other common signs of aging. Taking Lighthouse Collagen, with its combination of New Zealand marine collagen and hyaluronic acid, may slow the breakdown of both and stimulate their production.

n summer, our physiology can tolerate a few lifestyle mistakes, but when temperatures fluctuate and seasons change, the body is prone to imbalance. This is why illnesses spread so easily during autumn and spring. It is important to ramp up health for, and during, autumn, because it is the last chance to prepare the body for the demands of winter. In cold months, we expend a lot of energy keeping warm, while bugs run rampant in heated and unventilated indoor environments, so we need all our reserves and a fully functioning immune system to remain healthy.

and ideally we should consume 300g of fresh fish a week. Unfortunately, average fish consumption in the Western diet is only 100g a week.
The Western diet has changed, from natural foods based on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, to a heavily processed diet rich in calories and low in nutrients. These are contributing factors to increasing health issues and ailments, including lowered immune function.
The weekly recommended intake of essential fatty acids is easier and more cost-effective with fish oil supplementation. But did you know there is a new generation of fish oil?
Essential fatty acids have vast health benefits, so a deficiency can negatively impact our health and wellbeing. Let’s take fish for example – a rich source of protein, and the main source of omega 3 essential fatty acids that support cardiovascular function, balance mood, support joint health, brain function, nourish our hair, skin and nails, and help achieve optimal immune health. Fatty acids really are essential for our health,
Most fish oils only contain part of the fish fat, mostly omega 3 triglyceride fatty acids. But the phospholipids are missing. Phospholipids are better absorbed than omega fatty acids in triglyceride form. GO Fish Oil 1,550mg Omega-PC™ is the next step in the evolution of omega 3 supplements. It is a wild fish fat extract, using new technology to contain omega 3 bound to both triglycerides and phospholipids. The benefits are greater absorption, better efficacy and no fishy burps. It is exclusive to GO Healthy in New Zealand.

Restore gut health One aspect of health most people don’t think about is the never-ending population shifts occurring in our digestive system. There, both good and bad bacteria cohabitate in various proportions. Generally speaking, it’s a peaceful coexistence. This delicate balance can easily be disrupted every day by dietary choices, coffee, alcohol, medications, oral contraceptives and even stress. When good gut bacteria is thrown off balance, the body’s natural front line of defence takes a hammering, leaving us vulnerable to foreign invaders. A whopping 70 percent of the body’s immune system lies in the digestive tract, so it makes sense to maintain good gut bacteria for strong immunity. So what’s the best way to do this? Supplementing with probiotics is a daily insurance policy for gut health and immunity. Probiotics are live bacteria that help repopulate the body with good bacteria, helping regulate both our digestive system and internal immune system. Scientists from around the world are increasingly demonstrating

tool for strengthening the body’s natural defences. Garlic is a pungent herb and one of nature’s best antiseptics. It is packed with nutrients and compounds that have strong immune properties, helping prepare the body for when nasties hit. Zinc is critical for optimal functioning of the immune system. This important mineral is lacking in New Zealand soils. The body requires zinc for T-cell activity, and studies have shown that even mild zinc deficiencies can impair our immunity. Olive leaf helps strengthen the body’s immune response by working at a cellular level. It also contains strong antiseptic properties to help defend against invaders. The herb elderberry has been used for hundreds of years for its immune benefits. Fire up
your WINTER FITNESS
By DR THERESA DOBSON
A
s the long, balmy
days of summer fade, we may worry about how we’ll keep our fitness mojo as daylight dwindles at both ends. Keeping fit in summer is easy with long, sunny days calling us outdoors to swim, hike and naturally be active. The days stretch, allowing time to fit in workouts after work. As the seasons shift into a new gear, we also have to shift gears in our mind, so our exercise habits match the change to shorter, colder days. The instinct to hibernate is completely natural, so it's crucial to put in place some key "winter fitness habits" early on. As mornings get colder and darker, your mind will fill in like high tide with excuses. Don't worry! Arm yourself early on with excuse-busters to keep that fitness spark alive. It will require some awareness, creativity and fun planning, but you can do it and the rewards are endless!

HEALTH 2OOO • APRIL/MAY 2015
Proven tips to fire your fitness spark after dark þþ Pick an indoor sport or class so cold, rainy days don’t lend themselves to your tricky excuses. þþ Use pack mentality. Join a group fitness sport or class. You’ll be less likely to fall victim to bowing out if you have other people counting on you. At minimum, have a fitness buddy you have to answer to. þþ Dangle a reward. Reward yourself for every four weeks of success to keep you inspired and motivated (eg, massage, facial or electronic toy) with a super bonus reward at the three-month mark (weekend spa, shopping spree . . .) þþ Allow blunder days. Make yourself three “excuse day” tickets – three no-show days to use every three months. Any unused tickets get redeemed for $50 each to spend as you wish.
þþ Track it. Post a calendar in a public area listing the days you work out, so everyone can see your commitment to your winter fitness programme (eg, at home in the kitchen; at work on the wall). Announce it to your family and work mates, then give it a big fat tick once a workout is done. This puts dollar and time value on your fitness. Exercise reduces your predisposition to all sickness and disease and keeps you fit, healthy and happy. Only you are responsible to make it worth its weight in gold. Keep that spark burning and, above all, have fun! Dr Theresa Dobson, a health practitioner for 17 years, is a chiropractor and nutrition lifestyle coach specialising in spinal pain, nutrition, fat-burning and sports performance.

notfirst so thing? nimble Stiff knees and hips, and fingers that are not so nimble first thing on these cold mornings, may be the result of lifestyle factors like diet, weight, exercise and previous injury. The first sign is often joint stiffness after strenuous activity or overusing a joint. Joints may be stiff in the morning, but loosen up after a few minutes’ movement. The joint may be sensitive, or movement may cause a crackling or grating sensation. It is most common in the knee, hip, lower back, neck, and certain finger joints. Some people find that it that interferes with their sleep. This is when cartilage, the “shock absorbing” tissue lining joints, deteriorates. The spaces between bones narrow, and this leads to joint damage and stiffness. As symptoms develop over many years, we do have time to “move
it before we lose it” and change our lifestyle. If your joints are slowing you down, exercise may be the last thing you want to do – because it hurts! But the right exercises performed regularly can be a long-lasting way to improve flexibility and mobility and, for some people, even delay or sidestep surgery. Diet-wise we can ensure we get enough vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin D, and eliminate acidic or acid-forming foods. Another natural option is supplementation, and the most popular products for joints are glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin, which form proteoglycans in cartilage to help maintain free movement and comfort. We produce them naturally for cartilage repair, but sometimes through aging or injury we use them up faster than we make them.
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your joint fluid, and acts as a lubricant and cushion within the joint, while collagen is an essential protein that helps to provide structure and strength to joint cartilage and other connective tissue. Also a component of healthy joints, the minerals copper, boron, zinc and manganese, along with selenium, are each necessary for the development of strong, healthy joint tissue. Copper also helps create proteoglycans to help form healthy cartilage and bones; with zinc helping collagen formation in order to keep tendons and ligaments strong. Nutra-Life Joint Care UltraMove formula blends scientifically researched glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin with natural New Zealand marine collagen and hyaluronic acid, and includes joint support nutrients such as copper, manganese, zinc, selenium and boron.

A healthy winter?
Why not?
The days are shorter, a chill fills the air and we spend less time outside being active and more time sitting inside. As every parent knows, most children who mix with other children on a daily basis will catch at least some of the ills and chills doing the rounds this winter. But it doesn’t have to be this way, and there are many ways to support your child’s health through winter. 1
Make sure they wash their hands frequently.
2
Ensure they follow a healthy rainbow diet – plenty of red, green, orange and yellow vegetables.
3
Cut their sugar consumption – 100g of sugar has been shown to suppress immunity in children by 50 percent, and this effect may last up to five hours after consumption.
4
Teach them to cough and sneeze into their elbow as it less likely than hands to come in contact with people or surfaces.
5
Keep them hydrated with at least eight glasses of water each day. The moisture will help make mucous membranes, including those in sinuses, more resistant to bacteria.
6
Get them to bed in time for eight hours’ sleep.
7
Dietary supplement your fussy eaters.
It is also a good time to increase your child’s intake of antioxidants, especially vitamin C. Antioxidants protect the body’s cells from freeradical damage produced when the body is busy combating winter ills. Vitamin C is present in all fruit and vegetables – the fresher they are, the higher the content.
Thompson’s® Junior Immunofort represents a new concept in children’s nutrition. It is a premium children’s multi that provides vitamins, minerals and nutrients for year-round immune support. Amplify
autumn’s abundance A By DR JEANNETTE VOS
utumn is an amazing time of year to visit the local farmer’s market for superfoods that amplify the season. Apples, pears, cranberries, carrots, beetroot, pomegranates, Brussels sprouts, parsnips, varieties of cabbage, rutabagas, turnips, squash, cauliflower, pumpkins (and their yummy seeds), kumara, and the silver beet/swiss chard and kale still lingering from summer – probably the most nutritional of all. The body needs variety. All autumn superfoods are delicious and offer our bodies an array of high nutritional value. 1 Antioxidants, flavonoids, and fibre (especially in those that can be eaten raw). For example, Brussels sprouts is a superfood containing iron and vitamin K, often referred to as the “forgotten vitamin”. Try a half cup of Brussels sprouts brushed with ghee or, if you prefer the more tangy version, balsamic vinegar. For additional vitamin K, add turnip leaves, kale or silver beet to your fruit smoothie. Most people are deficient in this

Stacked with minerals. Many people think the only source of iron is by meat. Apart from dark green leafy vegetables like kale, silver beet and Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes are another good source. The bonus is they have anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits.
3 Great for the nervous system. Are you often stressed with work overload or emotional turmoil? Try eating pumpkin. In addition to being rich in potassium and a high source of fibre, pumpkin has B vitamins to help soothe your nervous system. Grated raw pumpkin or dehydrated pumpkin seeds are delicious on a salad. But you can also roast pumpkin much the same as the sweet potato/kumara wedges. Autumn’s bounty helps “ground” you emotionally and physically for the brisk autumn evenings heralding winter. Have a happy autumn with its abundance!
Roasted Kumara/Sweet Potato/ Pumpkin Wedges þþ 6 cups of sweet potato wedges þþ 3-4 tbsp of liquefied coconut oil þþ ¾ tsp sea salt þþ ½ tsp black or white pepper þþ 3 chopped onions DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to about 162ºC. Drizzle and toss the potato wedges with coconut oil. Coat and toss with salt and pepper. Bake for 30 minutes. Add onion, stir well. Bake approximately another 30 minutes until browned. Yum! I recommend coconut oil because it can tolerate high heat better than any other oil. Plus, most updated health research indicates it is good for you.

n ASTAXANTHIN
researchers’ secret is out By DR ROBERT CORISH
I
continue be impressed by the growing research surrounding the most powerful antioxidant many have never heard of, and that may be difficult to pronounce “asta- zan-thin”.
Today, I would like to share with you one of astaxanthin’s most important properties and one reason why I continue to promote this super antioxidant as a “no brainer” for preventive health.
Today, despite our progress in this technical, digital, fast food, “text I first became aware of astaxanthin me now” world – we are exposed eight years ago when I attended to 1000 times more toxins and free a health conference in Anaheim, radicals than our grandparents California, and was asked to review were 50 years ago. Why is this the scientific literature important? According on this extraordinary to Denham Harmon “the most carotenoid. During this and other scientists, powerful time I realised that the excess free radicals research community antioxidant can injure cells and was already familiar with you have never tissues, causing serious astaxanthin – it was the illnesses. Furthermore, heard of” antioxidant chosen by when our body is unable - Dr Oz major researchers to to produce sufficient prevent oxidative stress internal antioxidants from spoiling their experiments. to neutralise excess free radicals, This is powerful testimony, it creates a predicament known as considering the other antioxidants “oxidative stress”. And oxidative they could have chosen – vitamin stress plays an integral part in C, resveratrol, vitamin E, açai or many medical conditions we know blueberry, and green tea catechins, of today, including heart disease, etc. Researchers, without hesitation, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, arthritis, chose astaxanthin. cancer, macular degeneration, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and It didn’t take long before many other neurodegenerative, this secret became public, inflammatory illnesses. Therefore, especially when the Dr Oz we need greater protection today show introduced it as “the most than ever before, owing to our powerful antioxidant you have increased exposure to multiple never heard of”. Numerous free radicals from sources such scientific studies have validated as pesticides, plastics, solvents, astaxanthin’s tremendous preservatives, tobacco products, antioxidant power, and research pollution, sunlight, processed continues to roll out new sugars, even medications and evidence on its multiple much more. health-promoting benefits.

Many experts would argue that we already have sufficient antioxidants in our diet to handle these free radicals, however, many foods today are over-processed and stripped of their healthy nutrients, leaving us with empty shells lacking any goodness. This is one main reason why we take supplements in the first place – to “supplement” for vital nutrients and antioxidants missing from our foodstuffs. This is why I include astaxanthin in my supplements regimen. It can handle more free radicals than any other celebrity antioxidant. It also passes through the blood brain barrier and offers protection to the brain, spinal cord and central nervous system; it confers protection to the eyes, the immune system, and helps to prevent inflammation. This all makes good sense, once we understand the concept that free radicals are the initiators of disease, and that astaxanthin is the best antioxidant to neutralise and mop up more of these harmful radicals than any other. It should be the number one go-to antioxidant in our dietary supplements . . . it’s not just for researchers any more.

Worrying WARNING SIGNS
By GLEN CURD Researcher/Lecturer Pacific International Nutrition NZ Ltd
W
hen you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action. Many people today are sending emergency signals to the body because they burned their toast this morning, or the traffic was bad on the way to work. Unfortunately your brain can’t tell the difference between a “tiger in the room” and a "traffic jam”. Your body behaves the same way in either situation – your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens, and the brain carries out the instructions to release hormones, and you experience the many symptoms that ensue. Long-term exposure to real stress or perceived stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression. Your ability to tolerate stress depends on many factors, including the quality of your relationships, your general outlook on life, your emotional intelligence, your genetics, and your early life experiences.
Everyone needs their Bs When you consider that there are over 10,000 known interactions happening in the body every second of the day that require vitamin B6 to complete them, it comes as no surprise that many people run out of B vitamins. They are the first vitamins to be used up when the body is in a state of stress.
Because of the widespread damage stress can cause, it's important to know your own limit. How much stress is "too much", differs from person to person. We're all different. Some people are able to cope well, while others seem to crumble in the face of far smaller obstacles or events. There are many warning signs to keep an eye out for: Chronic worry, pessimism, negative self talk, a feeling of loss of control, resorting to alcohol, cigarettes or drugs to relax, comfort eating to quell the constant feeling of butterflies in your tummy, frequent colds, inability to get to sleep, exhaustion on waking, poor memory and concentration, loss of sex drive, panic attacks, chest pain, rapid thumping heartbeat, nervous habits like nail biting, restless legs, pacing, and the inability to deal with your emotions. Many of these situations occur as a result of life experiences such as work stress, moving house, public speaking, relationship difficulties, living with out-of-control teenagers, losing your job, growing up – some stress is seen as short-term stress, while others may have an outlook as long-term. If your emotional radar perceives that the stress may go on for a long period of time, it is something that you need assistance in order to “get through”, or your body will keep preparing you for perceived danger.

cellular terrorists The body is a battlefield where free radicals are “cellular terrorists” that charge in and start an energy-stealing chain reaction causing harm and damage. A free radical is toxic and unstable, stealing energy from other molecules. Free radicals often attack important proteins, enzymes or even genetic material contained in the DNA of a healthy cell. An attack of free radicals can result in serious illness.
battle strategy A powerful antioxidant is your best battle strategy against the cellular terrorist. An antioxidant such as astaxanthin will neutralise the oxidation caused by free radicals. An antioxidant will rescue the cell to prevent the chain reaction of stolen energy, it will share its energy with the free radical before the free radical has the chance to steal it and attack the cell, stopping the free radical before the damage is done.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenumgraecum) is one of the world’s oldest documented herbs traditionally used by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans for medicinal and culinary purposes.
Omegas 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids that cannot be produced by the body, so therefore must be obtained through the diet or supplementation.
Its popularity is easy to understand; as well as the slightly sweet and nutty flavour it imparts to dishes, it has a multitude of health benefits. Fenugreek supports healthy blood sugar levels, digestive comfort, and supports a healthy, robust appetite. Nutrient-rich fenugreek is, however, perhaps best known for helping to support healthy milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Radiance® Fenugreek provides encapsulated fenugreek to quickly and effectively support new mums.

GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is the beneficial omega 6 found in evening primrose and borage oil. Recent research has shown that GLA supports the production of beneficial prostaglandins, which naturally support a women's hormonal balance. GLA also supports a positive mood, helps with breast tenderness, supports the pre-menstrual time and encourages a clear, healthy complexion. Nordic Naturals Omega Woman was created specifically to address the unique needs of women. It blends the high-potency omega 6 (GLA) from evening primrose oil with a touch of EPA and DHA for balance.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega 3 fatty acid that cannot be produced by the body, but is an essential nutrient for everyone – and especially required by both mothers and babies. DHA makes up 20 percent of the human brain and nervous system, and because most of the brain’s development occurs while in the womb, the demand for DHA increases during pregnancy. DHA also supports normal birth weight, eye, nervous system and immune system development and helps support post-natal mood in mums. Nordic Natural’s Prenatal DHA is the ideal supplement before, during and after pregnancy, providing safe and effective omega 3 nutrition for both mum and baby.
