Mother nature
KISSES
Christmas
M
ost of us take time off over Christmas and New Year to chill out, de-stress and re-fuel – to nurture our inner self, and nourish life’s big picture. But what actually happens can be another thing – stress, traffic, sweltering heat, shopping queues, jostling for bargains, summer parties, bloating, dwindling funds, over-excited kids, fast food, more Christmas music, family tiffs, headaches, sunburn, and late nights with poor quality sleep after consuming a bit too much … it all adds up! So instead of looking and feeling your best, you end up with a stress cold sore, and half your holiday gone. For more quality relaxing with loved ones and some “me” time, try the “prevention is better than cure” approach. Just like every other time of the year, the basics for health are to sleep and eat well, exercise and play, drink plenty of water, manage stress, get outside for some sun kisses, and put time into meaningful relationships.
Bloating/gas from rich foods Prevent: Eat smaller portion sizes, go easy on fats, and chew everything thoroughly and slowly. Take digestive enzymes and probiotics, or a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water 15 minutes before a big meal. After: Activated charcoal soaks up excess intestinal gas, and yoga or a walk will certainly move things along. In the New Year, consider a cleanse or detox.
Cold sores Prevent: Only “air kiss” people with cold sores! Take immune support and lysine, and use natural sunscreen on lips as sun seems to encourage breakouts. After: Lysine.
Dehydration 6
HEALTH 2OOO • DECEMBER/JANUARY 2015
Prevent: Drink lots of water, not off-the-shelf “sports drinks”. They are high in sugar (about 15tsp a bottle) and sodium, contributing to obesity and tooth decay
n HOLIDAY SAFETY like most bottled beverages. Regular electrolyte intake benefits builders, athletes, farmers and people who physically work/train hard in high temperatures. After: To replace what is lost, add sugar-free electrolytes and minerals (tablets or liquid concentrate) to water bottles.
Sleep Prevent: Visit our website and search for Steps for sound sleep on www.health2000.co.nz After: If you still haven’t slept well, many people swear by natural sleep remedies that are also non habit-forming.
Stress Prevent: If frazzled, eat lightly and go even lighter on the alcohol. Like a glass of water, the longer you hold on to stress the heavier it becomes, even ’though its weight doesn’t change. We need to learn to put stress down often, rest, and breathe. Visit our website and search for A serial killer called Stress for why it is vital to manage stress. After: Magnesium and herbs can mellow; read 36 stress-busters on our website.
Sunburn
Tight muscles
Prevent: Healthy skin needs to be fed from the inside, exfoliated, nourished, moisturised, and protected from harsh UV rays on the outside. Pick sun/shade time wisely, wear hats, sunglasses and loose shirts. Sunscreen alone does not prevent skin cancer, but do use a natural brand. Astaxanthin, the most potent carotenoid antioxidant, may also function as an internal sunscreen helping with skin moisture levels, smoothness, elasticity, fine wrinkles, spots or freckles. After: For the odd sun kiss, keep aloe vera gel in the fridge. Astaxanthin also helps relieve inflammation, which causes pain.
Prevent: Other than warming up before and stretching after exercise, magnesium is known to relax mind and muscle for sore muscles, and kids with growing pains. After: Magnesium, massage, tissue salts, and curcumin.
Bee stings Prevent: Wear shoes, cover sweet food and beverages outdoors, stay still when bees closely investigate, leave hives/nests alone, clear rubbish and recycling, avoid sweet perfume and brightly coloured floral clothing. After: Topical and oral allergy sprays (seek urgent medical treatment for multiple stings or unusual allergic reaction).
NATURAL FIRST AID KIT OPTIONS nn Tea tree oil is a broad spectrum antiseptic. nn Allermed Relief soothes bites and stings, and reactions to foods, plants, seeds and pollens. nn Arnica for trauma, muscle strains, soreness and bruises. nn Aloe vera for scratches, scrapes, sunburn and burns. nn Rescue Remedy for calming anger, grief, fear, shock and anxiety. Good for pets during lightening or fireworks, to calm a toddler, for adults having trouble sleeping, or with stage fright. nn Natural insect repellant contains essential oils such as citronella, peppermint and lavender, that repel bugs. nn Ginger has antispasmodic properties which may support
recovery from motion sickness, soothe upset stomachs, and relieve gas. nn Curamin is an anti-inflammatory which supports relief for muscular stiffness and strain.
Ask your local Health 2000 store for advice on all the above, plus the best natural solution for your: oo Natural sunscreen oo Travel sickness oo Urinary tract infection oo Diarrhoea oo Food poisoning oo Cuts and scrapes oo Cold sores oo Hangover oo Intestinal and organ (eg, liver) detox oo Chemical (eg, smoking) detox oo Insect repellent problems … and anything else

CHRISTMAS
RAW
By Dr JEANNET TE

W
ith Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to think about healthy snacks and treats to nibble on at the kitchen table, picnic, beach and barbecue. Most people buy sweet and salty snacks in packets from the supermarket. But our tastebuds have five tastes – sour, salty, sweet, bitter and umami (savoury) – and we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just two! So how about making Christmas treats that are not only pleasing to the eye, delicious and healthy, but have “tastebud balance”?
RAW CHOCOLATE DIP Juicy, fresh strawberries are just wait ing for this dip, made with only four ingredients – fresh dates (about 2 cups), 2 avocados, 1 teaspoon of pure vani lla, and about a ½ cup LifeFoods caca o powder. Just whizz up in the food processor and voila!
CUCUMBER ROLL-UP Cut a cucumber length-wise into ribbons, spread the cashew hummus onto the thin slices, and roll it up. A nice hors d’oeuvre! For a sour, pickled taste, soak the cucumber in apple cider vinegar overnight.
VEGAN CASHEW HUMMUS Raw Christmas and summer nibbles. People who cannot eat cashews, can substitute with raw zucchini, macadamia nuts or cooked chickpeas. nn 1 cup raw cashews (soak for at least 3 hours) nn ½ lemon nn ¼ cup tahini paste nn 2-3 tbsp olive oil nn 1 or 2 cloves garlic nn ½ teaspoon sea salt nn Tamari sauce to taste nn 1 tsp ground cumin
nn nn nn nn
1/8th tsp chilli powder ¼ tsp ground turmeric ¼ red capsicum diced Water as needed (up to one cup) nn Topping: 1 small raw diced turmeric nn 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh coriander
Soak cashews for at least 3 hours. Drain and rinse. Combine and puree all ingredients (except capsicum and toppings) in a food processor. Mix in the diced red capsicum separately, and save a bit to combine with the coriander and turmeric garnish. Serve with sticks or slices of raw vegetables such as peeled yacon.

Omega 3 Krill oil is a popular source of omega 3, because it has all the health benefits of a regular omega 3 along with a few beneficial extras. Extracted from tiny crustaceans living in a naturally clean environment free of pollution, krill has significantly less risk of heavy metal contamination, making it a safe form of omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs). Omega 3 EFAs are crucial for all of our body’s fundamental processes, and because we don’t produce EFAs
with extras in our body, they must come from diet or supplementation. Krill is not only a rich source of omega 3s, but it has superior absorption, which means we don’t have to take as much to achieve results.
Apart from the benefits of fastabsorbing omega 3, krill includes the naturally occurring constituent astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant.
GOOD HEALTH RED SUPER KRILL OIL SUPPORTS:
It is absorbed and utilised in the body more effectively than other omega 3 oils because of its phospholipid form.
nn Heart health
Phospholipids are the building blocks making up the body’s cell membranes that control what goes in and out of each cell. This process is vital for optimal overall health, and because krill oil contains these same phospholipids, the molecules pass through cell membranes more easily, allowing more effective delivery of nutrients to cells.
nn Joint health and mobility.
E HOT PRIC
nn Healthy cholesterol levels nn Mental focus and clarity
Krill oil is also better tolerated in the stomach as it is water soluble (unlike regular omega 3 oils, which are fat soluble) making it more easily digested, with little chance of reflux or nausea, and no fishy aftertaste. This is particularly useful for people suffering digestive or liver problems, or who have had their gall bladder removed.

n HEART HEALTH
What is
CoQ10? Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vital component of every cell in the body – to provide cells with the energy to fire up and burn.
It makes sense that cells with the greatest energy requirement also have the largest need for CoQ10 – and suffer most when there is a lack of it. The heart, immune system and liver are made up of highly energydependent tissues that require good levels of CoQ10 to function efficiently, so this amazing little enzyme is great for supporting heart health and fatigue disorders.
DID YOU KNOW?
The heart works at an astounding Statins affect rate of about the body's abilty 75 beats per to produce minute, and CoQ10, so it is also pumps around 5 recommeded litres of blood that CoQ10 supplements be through our body every taken when minute too on statins. (phew!). If our heart doesn’t work efficiently, then the rest of our body can be affected.
As CoQ10 is fat-soluble, it is best taken in an oil-base (eg, fish oil) for maximum absorption and utilisation. Today, both natural health practitioners and medical doctors recognise the importance of CoQ10 and recommend it to patients for various reasons such as: nn Supporting cardiovascular health nn For energy and vitality (especially athletes) nn To offset possible depletion of CoQ10 levels from cholesterollowering medications and beta blockers nn For antioxidant protection and to address depletion due to aging, illness and unhealthy lifestyles. Good Health’s extra strength Opti CoQ10™ contains coenzyme Q10 blended with omega 3 fish oil. The fish oil not only increases the absorption of the coenzyme, but also provides omega 3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA for added cardiovascular and joint health support.
The heart needs CoQ10, and high concentrations of it are normally found in a healthy heart. However, when a deficiency exists, cardiovascular problems, fatigue and muscle weakness can occur.

‘Tistothe season be
healthy By JANEEN HOWARD, Dip. Med. Herb, MNZAMH
S
ummer is here and so are the social festivities that come with it. You know the drill – long lunches, Christmas parties, barbecues – loads of socialising! Despite how fabulous this time of year can be, there’s no denying that overindulgence can come at a price. Let’s face it, summer is a lot of fun. But digestive discomfort, bloating and low energy are not. Back-to-back late nights, enjoying “one too many”, and tasty food treats, can leave our digestive system feeling “heavy”, our immune system depleted, and we can feel run down. Our good gut bacteria is often thrown off balance, undermining the body’s natural front line of defence and leaving it unable to fight off invading bugs. Since 70 percent of the body’s immune system lies in the digestive tract, good gut bacteria is key to maintaining not only a healthy digestive system, and minimising unwanted digestive discomfort, but also for strengthening our immunity.
Key things to look for in a quality probiotic are: To restore friendly bacteria, probiotic supplementation is an extremely effective way to re-populate the gut quickly and return it to a healthy, balanced state. Both the digestive and immune system depend on the partnership with probiotics, to help shield the body from harm. If we keep our digestive system happy, our body systems greatly benefit as well. GO Probiotic 40 Billion is designed to maintain and restore good gut bacteria. It is a high-potency blend supplying 40 billion live bacteria in a daily dose of one capsule to maintain good bacteria. The blend has been scientifically researched and shown to quickly restore beneficial bacteria, ensuring a safe and effective way to strengthen gut health.
Luckily, there are steps we can put into place to make sure both our immune and digestive systems are healthy and in top notch shape, so we can feel well and energised this social season. If you have any pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or lactating, consult a health professional prior to use. Always read the label and take as directed. HOLIDAY SEASON A
FACEFIXERS
By RACHEL DAWSON Diploma of Nutrition & Herbal Medicine
lthough a summer holiday signals some work respite, it can also spell stress, late nights, poor food and drink choices, and too much sun. All of these can impact on how you look heading into the New Year. So what can be done to ensure that all festive season trappings don’t end up showing on your face?
DEHYDRATION is common during
STRESS is a given with last
minute Xmas shopping drama and dwindling bank balances. One of the key stress hormones, cortisol, triggers inflammation which can break down collagen, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles and other skin exacerbations. Get on top of stress by supplementing with B vitamins, magnesium and the stress-busting herbs, withania and rhodiola.
BAD FOOD CHOICES go hand-in-hand
this season as alcohol (a diuretic) becomes the beverage of choice. It can mean the body “steals” fluids from the skin, resulting in dry, dull skin. Minimise dehydration by sipping a glass of water between cocktails and support your liver health with milk thistle.
with holidays, and eating more than is necessary. This doesn’t just show on your waistline, it can show on your face too. Excess sugar and eating the wrong fats also drives inflammation, resulting in skin flare-ups, break-outs and loss of firmness. Try getting on top of your sweet tooth with chromium, magnesium and cinnamon, and curb a voracious appetite with African mango if need be!
TOO MUCH SUN can really age the skin, so make sure
you use a natural sunblock if you are going to be outside for extended periods, and try supplementing with astaxanthin and EPO. These nutrients work together to support your body’s natural ability to protect itself from the harmful effects of the sun, and support a smooth, glowing complexion.
POOR SLEEP
means the skin doesn’t get adequate blood flow for toxin removal and regeneration, which translates as tired, dull, pale skin. If you are finding it hard to get off to the land of nod, try supplementing with magnesium, tart cherry, zizyphus or valerian.

well?
n this modern world there are many reasons why people find sleep a challenge. Quality sleep was, just a generation ago, as easy as turning out the light. Now it is a nightly struggle for approximately 47 percent of the population. It is important to counteract the effects nutritional deficiencies, allergies, stress and a busy lifestyle have on your body. Science has more than convincingly shown us that lack of enough sleep and lack of quality sleep can have serious and dangerous long-term adverse consequences. A lack of quality sleep impacts on all aspects of your health and wellbeing. Literally every cell changes the way it operates when you haven’t had a good night’s sleep.
T O Hprice $3490 30ml
With that in mind, SleepDrops managing director Kirsten Taylor, a qualified naturopath, medical herbalist and nutritionist, formulated the KIRSTEN TAYLOR SleepDrops range to support people of all ages through their day and night. Kirsten spent a number of years developing and fine-tuning the SleepDrops range – a unique mix-and-match system combining the best of natural medicines. The formulations blend herbs, homeopathics, flower essences and nutritionals that have all been researched, studied and recognised to support people with sleep issues.
If you have any pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or lactating, consult a health professional prior to use. Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional.
The core product from the range is SleepDrops for Adults. “It is a world first liquid blend that is super easy to use,” Kirsten says. “It allows you to tailor your dose by popping the number of drops you need under your tongue every night before bed, and as you need it in the night.” “Most people need between five and 20 drops a night until normal sleep is achieved, and then they simply follow on with a maintenance dose of only five drops a night to support great sleep on an ongoing basis.” How can SleepDrops for Adults help? nn By turning off a busy mind nn Support the getting to sleep phase nn Support better quality and quantity of sleep. What about interactions with other medications? nn SleepDrops for Adults contain 13 herbs, but their combined “actives” are only 0.005mg per five drops, so herb-drug interactions are highly unlikely. nn It is natural, non-drowsy and non habit-forming. The SleepDrops range is available in all Health 2000 stores throughout the country, where staff are available to help put a tailor-made stress/sleep programme together for adults and children. There is nothing more important than a good night’s sleep!

OVERWHELMED & STRESSED? NATURE TO THE RESCUE
MEDITATION IN A BOTTLE
Stress can be all too common for the modern women. Unfortunately when it is ongoing, stress hormones speed up metabolic processes and with this faster rate, a large amount of essential nutrients are lost.
The antioxidants in cranberries can help prevent bacteria sticking to the urinary tract wall, while buchu leaves (a sweeper/ detox agent) and uva ursi have a long herbal history in urinary tract health.
For most of us, stress is an inescapable part of modern living. Whatever the cause – a hard day at work, screaming kids, balancing home and work – it’s no wonder stress-related statistics for illness are high.
MICROgenics Cranberry 17,000 Complex is a once-daily formula developed to support urinary tract health. It contains a blend of cranberry, buchu and uva ursi, along with vitamin C to provide support for the immune system.
For centuries green tea has been highly valued as a soothing drink to calm the body and soothe the soul. Research has discovered the biochemical key to green tea’s deeply soothing effects is the amino acid L-Theanine.
DID YOU KNOW?
L-Theanine is a unique amino acid found almost exclusively in the tea plant Camellia sinensis, and is the primary ingredient contributing to the unusual taste of green tea.
The body loses nutrients all the time, but when you are under pressure you tend to lose more. It is critical to replace these nutrients, specifically the B vitamins and vitamin C quickly, in order to ensure that stress doesn’t start to have a negative impact on energy levels, mood, hormones, and digestive and immune function. Radiance® Multi for Women provides a daily, high-potency multi formula containing high doses of B vitamins to replenish, alongside potent herbs specifically chosen for supporting healthy energy levels and supporting healthy resistance to the ill effects of stress.

as hormones first change and rush into the body – hormone activity can be too much or too little. Female Zone may assist with the reduction and dissipation of both hormonal acne and period irregularities, making life a brighter kind of normal for a teenage girl. Period pain, clotting, being easily irritated, having sugar cravings, or experiencing swollen and tender breasts can often become the new normal, and unnecessarily so. Then there is hormonal acne. At this exciting phase of life, where everything is about appearance, show me a teenager who is not driven mad trying to keep this hidden from the world. It can be souldestroying at a young age, causing complexes and, if treated incorrectly or left unmanaged, scar someone for life both physically and emotionally.
DURING PREGNANCY,

There can also be a reduced libido, which gives both a reduced production of vaginal mucous, and a thinning of the vaginal lining. Together they can make intercourse painful and unpleasant. Often, if not remedied, a low libido can go on to create a relationship problem, as intimacy is lost. Female Zone may assist in the restoration of the production of vaginal mucous and help increase the libido, which helps to rekindle intimacy and a healthy sex life into the twilight years.

Counting good sleeps ’til Christmas?
Nearly one in five New Zealanders over the age of 15 have a blood disorder that precedes Type 2 diabetes.
The lead-up to Christmas is a busy time and for many New Zealanders it’s been a long time since their last holiday. So many of us are stressed, and one of the first signs are sleep disturbances.
The finding came from a University of Otago study involving blood sampling of 4721 Kiwis aged 15 years and older, which showed 19 percent had a glucose metabolism disorder. Thompson’s Glucose Manager is formulated to support healthy blood glucose levels in healthy individuals, as well as assisting to maintain healthy peripheral circulation and maintain general wellbeing. Contains a highly absorbable form of chromium picolinate and a high strength combination of B vitamins, minerals and specific herbs. Chromium and gymnema help support healthy blood glucose levels.

Rev up your2015 HEALTH REVOLUTION
A
s 2014 edges to closure, you’ll find yourself in reflective moments on the past year that secretly slid away … ponder goals completed as your heart smiles, and breathe a heavy sigh at those many rich ambitions that fell through the cracks. Somehow, at the end of each day, month and year, there never seems to be enough time to do the single most important event – taking care of yourself in ways that design a more vibrant, healthy body and mind. The “to do” list got most of the ticks of the year, and somehow swallowed up your precious time. This is where your most critical mistake anchors itself. You put yourself on the bottom of your “to do” list.
By DR THERESA DOBSON
If these words fire up a “that’s me!” response, you are not alone. As I consult my patients on stress and health all year, I find this is the hard wire thread that weaves in most of my patients’ busy lives. You seem to think you are the least important event of the day. Yet your health and happiness is the golden key to feel joy in your life and share the best of who you are to those whom you share life with.
Let’s make 2015 your “Health Revolution” year. Like any change, it’s going to take a few essential habit-shifters.
To Do List 1. Clean car 2. Finish wo rk 3. Pick up k ids 4. Gardening
1 hr a night Put down the iPad
Me time!
1 Put “you” and your health goals on the TOP of your “to do” list. I can guarantee you that when the day comes for you take your last breath, you will not be worried about how clean your car or house was, or if you got gold stars from your boss, or the TV shows you missed. But you will regret not taking time to love yourself, your family and friends and appreciate this amazing planet!

2 Limit tube time to one hour a night – I call the television the “champion time waster” – the average person spends three hours a night in front of the tube. This extra time will set you free to exercise, walk, enjoy nature, spend time with family or friends and prepare healthy meals.
HEALTH 2OOO • DECEMBER/JANUARY 2015
3 Peel yourself away from your computer, tablet, phone. Now that you have freed up a few extra hours a night from TV, commit to putting all electronics away for one hour too. Involve the family in this event and begin to plug in and give attention to each other. Make it fun time, not question and criticise time! You can play a game, chat, go for walks, or just simply hang out. Healthy relationships are a huge part of a happy mind and body that require time and attention to grow and flourish.

People at risk of a vitamin D deficiancy
ELDERLY – people over age 70 produce about 30 percent less vitamin D than a young person with the same exposure. At the same time, your kidneys become less efficient at converting vitamin D into the form used by the body. Vitamin D is used for treating weak bones.
DARK SKINNED – skin pigment acts as
a natural sunscreen, so you need six times more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as a pale-skinned person.
LIVING MOSTLY INDOORS. ALWAYS WEARING CLOTHES/SUN PROTECTION – it blocks vitamin D production.
FEMALE – women have lower levels than men.
OVERWEIGHT/OBESE/HIGH MUSCLE MASS
– vitamin D is fat-soluble, so body fat acts as a sponge by collecting it, therefore reducing the availability of what the body can easily use.
A SOUTHERNER – people living at
southern latitudes where the UVI (ultraviolet index) is low.
FEELING BLUE – serotonin, the brain
hormone associated with mood elevation, rises with exposure to bright light and falls with decreased sun exposure.
Sun-kissed KIWI NEARING EXTINCTION?
Back in the ‘60s, Christmas holidays were a race to get a tan by all means possible. People would lie on the beach all day, kids jumping in the waves, and vinegar on the “hot spots” would be a nightly ritual. In 1980, with the invention of the first UVA/UVB sunscreen, we learned about the link between sunburn, skin cancer, and the thinning ozone layer over NZ. While ‘90s kids were often reluctantly plastered in sunscreen, fluorescent zinc, hats/caps, and made to sit midday in the shade, gaming devices crept their way into our homes, connecting TV screens to beds and couches. Where once parents had to go out and call kids in, now they knew where they were. Today it is not just the infirm and the elderly who live indoors and rarely feel sun on their skin. Many kids are raised solely indoors, and only go outside to get into the car.
Kiwi researchers estimate about 32 percent of our population is at risk of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency. In the USA it is about 50 percent. Increasing levels of vitamin D3 among the general population could prevent chronic diseases that claim nearly one million lives throughout the world each year. Germany is implementing vitamin D supplementation as part of its health programme. “The estimated costsaving effect of improving vitamin D status in Germany might be up to 37.5 billion euro annually. It should be the goal of nutrition and medical societies to erase vitamin D deficiency in Germany within the next 5-10 years.” – A. Zitterman, PubMed, 2010.

n WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
on a serious mission NEWE SIZ
VS There has been a lot of buzz around the success many people using Garcinia cambogia have had in their attempts to manage their weight. Garcinia cambogia is a yellow fruit, shaped similar to a pumpkin, originating from Indonesia and now found across South-East Asia, India and central Africa. A naturally occurring extract derived from the rind of the fruit contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA). HCA supports healthy fat metabolism – important when considering a new eating plan and exercise regime to manage a healthy body weight. It also supports appetite management, so when taking on a calorie-reduced eating plan it supports moments of weakness when you may consider over-eating. HCA is shown to support healthy serotonin levels, which means good mood levels. A balanced mood makes it less likely for a person to indulge in stress or emotionally triggered eating binges. HCA is also said to support stable cortisol levels. An increase in cortisol production can cause an increase in body fat in the abdominal
area, so it is important to stabilise cortisol levels if you are looking to manage your body fat levels. Research has shown that at 1200mg, Garcinia cambogia is an effective, natural dietary aid for maintaining a healthy body weight. Lighthouse Garcinia Cambogia 6000 contains 600mg of HCA a capsule, along with 1.8mg of chromium, for a two-capsule optimal daily dose. With a growing focus on sugar and the effect sugar has on weight management, it is important to consider how chromium can help support the body in maintaining blood sugar level balance. One of the key methods in supporting weight management is to support the sensitivity of the body’s cells to the hormone insulin (chromium helps support this), which plays a critical role in maintaining balanced blood sugar levels.

Exercise for good health and l o n g life
W
e all know that exercise is good . . . right? But how many of us exercise regularly? The By DR ROBERT last statistics CORISH, M.D recorded here in NZ (2012) for the general population showed that only 54 percent of adults were physically active for 30 minutes, on five or more days a week. This leaves 47 percent that were not active or sedentary.
However, when we consider the multiple medical issues that can be avoided or treated by exercise, it baffles me that many individuals completely ignore the dramatic benefits it provides.
Gone are the days when life was simpler and exercise was incorporated into everyday activity – walking or biking to work, walking to and from the shops, or to the park at weekends for summer activities. Nowadays we have cars, lifts and escalators – even horizontal escalators at airports. Shopping malls are packaged together so as to minimise travel and inconvenience. To make matters worse, work schedules seem to spill over into home life, squeezing out every possible minute of productivity and leaving us with very little personal time. Unfortunately today, exercise has to “fit in” with our busy schedules.
WOMEN AND EXERCISE
Recent reports indicate that the alternative (inactivity) is not very attractive: A study in the American Journal of Hypertension reported that physical inactivity is just as bad as having high blood pressure. Moreover, in those individuals who already have high blood pressure, inactivity increases death rates by 37 percent. Similarly, the British medical journal Lancet also regarded physical inactivity as a high-risk factor for death, and Harvard Medical School has stated that inactivity has a risk factor for death similar to smoking.
26
PANACEA FOR THE BODY Exercise affects every cell in the body – heart, brain, immune and skin, which embrace exercise as a universal panacea for any condition. When performed safely, sensibly and regularly, exercise improves all aspects of health, including lowering the risk of all cancers (and improving survival rates) . . . who wouldn’t want this medicine?
An interesting study on women from Queensland University of Technology suggested that exercise should be prescribed as a medicine. It revealed that moderate to high-intensity activity reduced the risk of premature death in women. The old stereotype of senior women walking, gardening or simply stretching is no longer the recommendation. The studies confirmed that middle aged to senior women were capable of a wider range of activities including jogging, swimming, biking, hiking and weights – women should be very active to the point of puffing and panting during exercises. The health benefits are absolutely huge. The studies reported that those women who exercised regularly, experienced better functionality, improved memory and wellbeing, suffered less disability and lived longer.
over 50s benefit more from resistance, strength and weight-type exercises. When it comes to resistance (weight) training (for us over 50), high-speed resistance (HSR) training with multiple reps of low to medium weights, proves better than fewer reps of heavy weights. HSR results in greater exercise capacity, improved strength and better functionality. This is not to say over 50s shouldn’t do aerobic exercise, but that resistance and strength training should be included our regimen. Resistance exercises improve bone density and muscle strength – both of which are associated with better health and longevity.
GET MOVING For most of us, the hardest part of exercising is finding time to fit it into our busy schedules. My advice is don’t wait for your doctor to prescribe exercise for your health, get moving and improve your health, research undeniably proves it. Remember, every journey begins with a first step, and once you start you have begun your journey to better health – let’s get moving. Dr Robert Corish is a medical doctor who has practiced integrative medicine, toxicology and anesthesiology. He is an author, teacher and speaker, advocating that the future of medicine is prevention – proactive healthcare.
EXERCISE REGIMENS The latest studies indicate that different types of exercises benefit different age groups. For example, youth through to mid-adulthood gain most from aerobic, endurance and stamina types of training, whereas

Protein: All pros and no cons With summer months upon us, we are all keen to get moving and shed any extra weight to form a lean, strong beachready body. What kind of food we eat can greatly influence how much we eat in any one meal. Fats and carbohydrates can set up a craving cycle that is hard to break, and if not burned off through exercise, are converted and stored as body fat. Protein, however, creates a higher level of satisfaction (satiety), which means overeating is less likely. Protein is also lower in calories than fat (1g of protein has 4 calories: 1g of fat has 9 calories). Protein is broken down into amino acids, which are crucial to maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails, building and repairing tissues, making enzymes and hormones – therefore the body needs relatively large amounts of protein daily.

Unfortunately, as we age, collagen synthesis slows and it breaks down more quickly, resulting in the appearance of sagging skin, large pores, fine lines and wrinkles. This process is contributed to by stress, free radicals, UV exposure and nutrient deficiencies. Radiance® Ageless Beauty provides easily assimilated and New Zealand-sourced marine collagen. This particular type of collagen contains the specific amino acids required to support collagen production for healthy skin structure.
