IN THE BAG She’s one of the founding members of New Zealand’s vibrant fashion community and now Liz Mitchell is teaming up with Ziera to help carry the brand to new heights

iz Mitchell always wanted to be a fashion designer. Her mother was a stylish, modern woman and always had fashion magazines around the house, which Liz spent hours flicking through. Fast-forward to today, she’s one of our most successful designers with a varied and colourful career. When asked what fashion means to her, it’s clear it means everything. “It’s my world,” she replies. “I think fashion is such an amazing industry. From the creation of yarn, colours, themes and ideas, and then turning them into something practical that can be worn – it’s got to be comfortable and it’s got to look chic.” After graduating from Auckland University Fine Arts School in 1979, Liz became a designer for an edgy fashion boutique called Pussyfooting in Auckland’s Kitchener St, specialising in the fashion of the time – metallics, shoulder pads... and frills, frills and more frills! After a stint working in London, she returned home and landed a dream role as a costume designer for the hit new TV series at the time, Gloss. “It was such an exciting time for fashion in New Zealand. The colours were extreme, the shoulder pads were big and the hair was even bigger,” Liz laughs. She eventually decided to go out on her own as a freelance designer and TV stylist.

L

18

“It got to the point where I had enough experience, knowledge and above all else, faith in myself that I could make it work – so I decided to start my own label,” she says. In 1994, Liz Mitchell Design was born. Over 20 years later, having ridden just about every curve of the rollercoaster that is the fashion industry, she’s still in love with clothes. “Highlights have been the red carpet moments like dressing Keisha CastleHughes for the Academy Awards, working with Weta workshop, and also with Farmers to create their first designer collection.” Her next creative partnership? Designing a bag for Ziera customers to carry their new shoes home in – with all proceeds from the $3 bag going towards the Dress for Success charity in New Zealand and Australia. It was a natural step for the Kiwi designer, whose clothes are known for being wearable and comfortable, with loads of personality –

just like Ziera shoes. “Over the last few years I’ve been noticing more and more of my clients are purchasing Ziera shoes to complete their outfits,” she says. “I’m a practical person myself, I need comfortable shoes. As you get older, you can wear heels for a short amount of time, but when you’re on your feet for a long period of time, comfort is key.” Liz admits that a beautiful dress will only do so much – a handbag, the right accessories and the perfect shoe are needed to complete a look. “If you buy quality shoes, they will last for many seasons. I hear women talking every day about problems and pain with their feet and footwear. It’s fantastic that Ziera are addressing these issues; there has been a gap in the market for fashionable and comfortable shoes for too long,” she says. Liz even used Ziera’s ‘Paris’ shoe for one of her latest look books, so when she got the call from Ziera asking if she would like to be involved in a special project, the answer was a resounding ‘yes’. “Liz is a supporter of Dress for Success, so was a natural choice for this initiative,” says Ziera group marketing manager, Nicky Dunn. “Her design of the bag brings in the Ziera look in a unique way, with all of the colours for the Autumn/Winter season.”

IN HER SHOES 9AM I get a sneak peek at the new season offerings from local and overseas designers for future shoots.

When it comes to style, there are few women more qualified than Sonia Greenslade or more than 20 years, Sonia Greenslade has been creating some of the country’s most fashionable looks for magazine covers, celebrity shoots, fashion editorials and TV commercials. It’s her expert eye that puts together the stunning campaign images each season when we showcase a new range of Ziera shoes. “Shoes are such an important fashion item; they can make or break an outfit,” explains Sonia. “I love working with Ziera to bring all the looks of the season together.” Just like the fast-paced fashion world she works in, Sonia says no two days are ever the same. What does stay constant is she’s always on her feet – whether she’s running around town picking up clothes, attending designer showcases, styling on set at shoots or making sure our A-list look their best. “Comfort is key to me,” she laughs. “But there is no reason why comfort and style can’t go hand-in-hand.”

F 10AM On any day, I can be working on five to 10 different projects. That’s a lot of clothes and shoes!

11AM There are new cuts, textures and colours for every season – fashion is always being updated.

colour Use a coloured tight to bring interest to an all-black outfit. Or if you really want to be on trend, choose a tight that is a complementary colour (ie the opposite on the colour spectrum) from your main outfit tone. If you’re wearing a pattern, you could also pick out one of the colours to highlight with your tight choice. Subtle tones, as opposed to primary colours, will create a more successful effect.

black The idea with black tights is they’re not meant

to be noticed unless you’re pairing them with an outfit in one solid colour. The best choice is to go for an opaque of at least 60 denier thickness. These days, tights can even go up to 200 denier for ultra-black coverage. Opting for a matte finish will also be more flattering on the leg.

do the tight thing When it comes to showing your outfit in the best light, stylish tights are a shoe in s the temperature drops it’s time to put away the faux tan, retire the razor, reach for the tights and embrace the cover-up. When we plan our winter wardrobe, most of us automatically think about black tights, and why not? They’re warm, stylish, match with everything and, as a bonus, slim the leg. Plus, when it comes to completing your winter look don’t underestimate the power of your hosiery to take an outfit from flat to fab. “Today tights are about fashion not just function,” says magazine fashion editor, Louise Hilsz. “I love the way you can change the entire look of an outfit just by changing the tights.” Take these pointers on board and make a style statement this winter.

WIN!

pattern Forget the lace tights of the 1980s; today’s patterns are a chic choice for anyone who likes fashion. They can be as subtle or as loud as you desire but the trick here is not to mix patterns. Your tight should be the style statement, so keep all other elements of your outfit classic solid colours. 21

look good, feel great aving worked as a podiatrist for 16 years, Liz Satterley has been involved in all aspects of the field – hospitals, community health, private practice and now, in the footwear industry with Ziera. She became involved with Ziera after contacting us to tell us how comfortable our shoes were: a good move on her part because Ziera offered her a job! “I need to wear appropriate footwear to work, but then I need to keep it on for school pick-up and after-school activities as well. I loved that the shoes were not only comfortable but fashionable too,” Liz says. She says we often forget how much we rely on our feet and how neglected they are, tucked away in socks and shoes in winter. Our feet deserve loving attention to prevent foot problems – which is where orthotic-friendly shoes come in.

H

WHAT ARE ORTHOTICS?

They are contoured inlays for shoes, designed to support, align, prevent or correct a foot problem, or simply to enhance comfort and function. They’re often used by sportspeople to help guide and support their bodies to perform their best or to support and alleviate pain due to an injury or other foot problems. Orthotics can be over-the-counter products, such as contoured insoles, or they can be custom-made to meet your specific need. Ziera boots, shoes, and sandals come with inlays that offer cushioning and are moulded to support the foot and ultimately your whole body. These provide adequate support for many

22

people. More commonly, a new orthotic is specifically created to alleviate the problem. When the Ziera inlay is removed, there is room within the shoe for your custom orthotic. HOW CAN THEY HELP?

Orthotics can help to relieve and prevent a range of issues: back or knee problems due to pronation (a slight inward rolling motion of the foot as it hits the ground) or over-pronation; tired or aching feet; heel and arch pain; sports-related pain; problems linked to diabetes; and problems associated with arthritis. Many women will admit to putting fashion before comfort, Liz says, but when the pain becomes a daily occurrence, they realise they need a shoe that satisfies both needs. Ziera is Australasia’s most recommended footwear brand by podiatrists and other medical professionals, as we have a wide

range of orthotic shoes. As well as having enough room for your custom orthotic, our orthotic-friendly shoes offer adjustable fit, generous width, roomy toe area, padded toplines, rocker soles, strong steel shanks and the support you need. A major focus for Ziera is offering plenty of style options to suit any taste and lifestyle – from women’s casual shoes to dress shoes, walking shoes to corporate classics. “Most of our customers have foot issues, but there’s a lot who don’t; they just buy Ziera shoes because they love the look,” explains Liz. “What’s great about that is they are preventing any foot issues that may arise further down the track – it’s a win-win.” To find a podiatrist near you, check out www.podiatry.org.nz and www.apodc. com.au for more information.

This allows them to ‘dry out’ properly from foot perspiration, avoiding fungal infections – plus varying your footwear means different pressure points are activated and different muscles are used in the body.

under pressure

Q A your most pressing We & answer questions on reflexology.

practice which has historical roots right back to ancient Egypt, reflexology is the application of pressure onto specific points and areas on the foot, hands or ears. The theory is that these areas correspond directly with the body’s organs and energy flow, and that massaging them can help with a whole variety of ailments. Traditional Chinese medicine focuses on treating your body as a whole and working out what’s going on at an energy level. Problems in the body arise when the energy levels, called ‘qi’ – pronounced ‘chi’ – are disrupted by something and cause a blockage. Headaches, muscle cramps, digestive problems, it is believed, are all a result of incorrect levels of qi in the body, and reflexology allows the tension to be released from that area and for the energy to flow freely.

A

Reflexology areas on the foot Head and neck

Each of the toes, including their joints. Spine

Runs along the inside seam of both feet. Chest area

The ball of the foot, sometimes slightly darker skin, from under the toes to where the skin lightens. Waist line

This is where your foot is thinnest in width across the middle, just like a waist. Your stomach area is located slightly above the line and your intestines are located slightly below the ‘waist’ line.

24

Pelvic area

Found at the bottom of your foot, when the skin gets darker again.

What is reflexology used to treat? • chronic pain • headaches/migraines • stress • fatigue • diabetes • digestive issues • pregnancy-related issues* • asthma • anxiety • PMS * It’s important you talk to your doctor before embarking on a reflexology treatment. How does this affect your foot health? Because all areas of your feet are important to overall body health, it’s crucial to wear shoes that are well-fitting and comfortable. Shoes that pinch, rub, restrict or squeeze parts of your feet can create issues around your body – so when you put on a pair of painful heels or too-small loafers, it’s not just your feet that are paying the price! Where are the reflexology points on the foot? There are some 50 reflexology points on the feet, each of which impacts a different area of your health. Each foot represents the corresponding side of the body, eg the right food affects the right side and the organs on that side, like the liver. The foot is divided into sections; the top third (including toes) represents the head, neck and spine, the middle third represents the chest area, and the bottom third represents digestive and reproductive organs. To find a qualified reflexologist near you, see www.reflexology.org.nz/ www.reflexology.org.au.

pedi, steady, go... Everyone loves a pedicure but the truth is sometimes it’s easier to do it at home. Here’s how you can do it yourself.

1

Remove all nail polish. If it doesn’t come off immediately, soak a cotton wool ball and leave it on the nail for a few minutes. You’ll find it’s a little stubborn in the crease where the nail meets the skin so use a Q-tip soaked with nail polish remover for these areas.

2 3

Cut and file your toenails with toenail clippers and a basic emery board.

Fill a large bowl with warm water and add essential oils. Tea tree oil has natural deodorising properties and is anti-fungal, while peppermint oil is good for increasing circulation. It also has a cooling effect To slough off rough and smells great. spots, make an Our top tip is to add exfoliant with either sugar a quarter of a cup or salt crystals mixed of milk as the lactic with jojoba or almond oil. acid will help dead Massage each foot with skin. 5

Dry your feet thoroughly, particularly between your toes.

6 7

Apply a thick moisturiser, oil or foot cream all over your feet and massage well. Don’t even think about cutting your cuticles, because if not done correctly, there is a high risk of infection. Instead, after the skin on your feet is softened from your foot bath, simply use a cuticle stick to gently push them back.

8

Now it’s time to paint. Apply a thin base coat with just three swipes – one in the middle and then one down each side.

9

Wait a few minutes for this layer to dry then add two coats of your favourite nail polish – at the moment we’re loving tones of orange and red. But if you’re feeling adventurous, try a double coat of winter white, the shade du jour.

10

Finish with a topcoat to increase shine and durability.

SHE’S IN FASHION Two Ziera customers get a stylish new look, from the ground up!

Jeanette Tuckey It’s been 20 years since Jeanette started buying Ziera shoes, and when she bought her very first pair, there was no time for a breaking-in period. As a doctor, she needed a comfortable pair of shoes that could withstand her nightly shifts at the hospital.

“When I started on the wards, I was walking all day. It was about eight or nine hours on your feet,” Jeanette says. “But at least once a week you’d be on rotations, which was 16 hours on your feet. So comfort was important.” These days, Jeanette has swapped her hospital rounds for a job as a GP, specifically a travel doctor. She’s the final port of call for those needing medical check-ups before heading overseas, such as Red Cross doctors or police going on international deployment. As a result, Jeanette needs a work style that looks professional, but approachable. “As a doctor, you need people to engage with you,” Jeanette says. “On the weekend I’m pretty casual though – jeans and a T-shirt, mainly.” Because of her job, Jeanette is well aware of how important keeping your feet in good shape is and that’s why she’s stayed loyal to Ziera for two decades. “When you’re used to comfort, and you try other brands, they’re not that comfortable. I have a bunion and I tend to be flat-footed, so having something control the pronation [inward roll of the foot] helps.” With three grown-up children, Jeanette says she has tried to pass along her ‘comfort first’ mentality but admits it’s hard with her two daughters. “At the moment fashion trumps everything,” she laughs. “But they always like to have a say on my shoes. So they have to pass the comfort test, but also the daughters’ test!” Jeanette admits she was surprised by how much she liked the different styles of clothing when it came to her new outfit. “The makeover was so much fun – I’ve got my eye on those shoes!” We’re sure her daughters would approve! 42

Claire Dyson

After leaving her high-powered fashion retail job to start a family, Claire’s fashion-forward sense of style had to take a sudden sensible turn when she found herself running after a very energetic toddler.

“Since I’ve become a mum, I’ve got zero tolerance for uncomfortable footwear,” Claire laughs, as the adorable Jamie, nearly two years old, sits next to her. “I need something that’s comfortable and also looks good.” Working in retail management around the country, Claire cultivated a distinctive style over the years. “I have a passion for a bit of bright – I love a statement necklace! I never used to be a jeans girl but since having a baby, I’m less about the dresses and more about comfort. But I’m determined not become a ‘boring mum’, so I’m still into a bit of pattern and a bit of clash.” Claire admits that Ziera didn’t at first seem like a natural fit with her eclectic look, but a pair of black wedge heels changed everything. “They’re phenomenal – they’re black and stylish: not too high, not too low. And I get compliments every single time I wear them! I bought them two years ago, they’re still going strong – and I’ve thrashed them!” They were also one of the few pairs of shoes that made it through the transition from fulltime work to full-time mum, because they’re toddler-proof. “You can run around all day in them and you don’t roll your ankle. An ankle roll with a toddler is not good… you can’t afford to go down!” When it comes to style, it’s all about thinking creatively, Claire says. “I used to say this to my staff about my Ziera wedges – it’s about thinking outside the box. It’s all about what you pair it with – mix them up with something that makes it about your personality.” With her makeover, Claire said that the dress was a great reminder of her pre-baby style. “I haven’t worn a dress in forever and it was refreshing! It’s reignited my desire to start wearing skirts again.” The boots, however, were a sure bet. “I knew they were going to be comfortable but they looked awesome as well!” 44
