Behind the scenes

Calling home

Today Aggies who have died in the past year will be remembered at Muster and Roll Call at 7 p.m. in Reed Arena.

Maj. Stephen G. Ruth will address attendees tonight. Ruth, class of 1992 and former student body president, served in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Muster Committee members spent months planning for the ceremony. Students will meet with honored families tonight.

Roll Call tonight honors the lives of our fellow Aggies. We should take part in this sacred and solemn tradition. Jonny Green — THE BATTALION

Muster speaker aims to inspire student service Brandi Tevebaugh The Battalion Maj. Stephen G. Ruth, class of 1992, will join the ranks of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, E. King Gill, Earl Rudder, and most recently Robert Gates as the 2010 Muster speaker. Because of his love for the school, Ruth came to campus early and enjoyed speaking to student organizations and classes on campus, he said. “We got in Wednesday evening, and I started teaching in class Thursday, leadership in the college of business administration, the college that I graduated from,” Ruth said. “I wanted to go back to the college that I had my humble beginnings with, to go back there and engage those students with some of the things and lessons that I’ve learned in life, having had the same degree that they are aspiring to attain.” Ruth’s presence on campus has already made an impact on students who have come in contact with him, said Jill Green, speaker selection subchairwoman and a senior accounting major. “We had breakfast with him on Friday morning, and he told us that you need to continue to serve because you never know who you are affecting,” Green said. “I thought that was incredible because that’s honestly how he’s lived his life. I’m the one introducing him. I know he’s going to say something Ruth incredible. I just want to give a man that’s amazing a worthy introduction. You don’t have to have a conversation with him to realize he’s incredible, just watch him interact with people.” Ruth said he plans to encourage students and families in his speech tonight. “I plan to inspire the students to continue on the path of service, to appeal to their sense of responsibility,” he said. His love for A&M and dedication to service set him apart from the other nominees in a selection process that began in January 2009, said Cameron Pybus, the speaker escort for the Muster Committee and a sophomore environmental design major. “From a database of people we select the

person that we think would be the best fit,” Pybus said. “What we saw in Maj. Ruth was personality and dedication and passion that he had for A&M at his time here and continued to have.” He is serving as the U.S. exchange officer to the Headquarters Land Warfare Center in the United Kingdom and is responsible for overseas training for the British Army. He returned in July from a yearlong deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he served as senior operations officer for Task Force 2-2 Infantry in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Ruth served in Kuwait, Iraq, BosniaHerzegovina, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Germany. He was involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Joint Guard and Joint Endeavor and Operation Able Sentry. “I think one thing that really drew our committee’s attention to him was that he’s been deployed in Afghanistan, Macedonia and Germany,” Green said. “He’s just seen so much heartache with his deployment, just something that you would never want any-

body to experience with war going on. He tries to bring encouragement wherever he goes. We think that he will be a great source of encouragement for the families.” Ruth earned his bachelor’s in business administration and later earned his master’s from George Mason University in organization psychology and leadership. After earning his master’s, he was an assistant professor of leadership at West Point. Ruth is from Angleton, Texas. He is married to Bettina Ruth and has three children, Stephen II, Sahara and Sterling. Muster remains an important tradition to Ruth as it does with many Aggies, he said. “It’s really the only day of the year that brings everyone together among all the other myriad of competing tasks and responsibilities,” Ruth said. “It’s the one that brings us all together for us to focus on what it means to be an Aggie, and part of that is our Texas roots, the [April] 21 being Texas Independence Day, to the Muster Ceremony that attempts to connect with our fallen a sense of remembrance that we will always have of them being part of the Aggie family.”

ou will not forget the sight of thousands of candles, flickering and dancing in the dark. You will not forget the Aggie Spirit in Reed Arena. You will not forget the sound of gunshots echoing in the arena tonight, the click of the Ross Volunteers’ boots and the snap in their step. Muster is A&M’s single most sacred and time-honored tradition. We can whoop and howdy and yell, and these things say we are good Twelfth men and women, but today we get to say something else: “Here.” This means we will You will not forget you. not forget You are our famthe Aggie ily. If you have never attended Muster before, make plans to do so. If you have been before, make plans to come again. Just as a reminder, it is imperative that we are respectful throughout the ceremony. In 2002, Pat Pearson, class of 1983, said of the ceremony, “Muster will never change. It will survive, unscathed by time, because it is a tradition enriched with the devotion of one Aggie to the other. The reverence, the silence, it’s all a part of the notion that Aggies never leave their roots, nor are they forgotten by their own.” This is what it means to be a Fightin’ Texas Aggie. This is why we are so proud. This is why we are “here.”

Staats Staats was a soldier in the Texas National Guard, which he joined upon his graduation from Fredericksburg Staats High School in 1996. Staats was assigned to the 143rd Infantry Detachment at Camp Mabry in Austin. Staats died Oct. 16, 2009, when his vehicle was attacked and caught in an explosion. “Chris was in his second deployment in Afghanistan as part of the agribusiness development team where they were helping the Afghan people become self sufficient with agriculture, said Monteigne Staats, Staats’ wife. Staats was proud of the work he accomplished in Afghanistan, helping people develop a higher standard of living where he was stationed, said his best friend Scott Siegler. Staats identified as being a proud soldier, and as a man who could be everyone’s best friend, Monteigne said. “Chris definitely made sure that everyone he came into contact with knew they were really cared about and he was one of those people that truly listened, Monteigne said. “He also took his job very seriously. He was really committed to what he was doing and he was really committed in what he believed in. Staats was a proud soldier and he also enjoyed his downtime with his family and outdoors activities, Striegler said. “He was a really outdoors person; he enjoyed hunting and fishing and being outdoors, Striegler said. “He really liked being in the Fredericksburg area and spending his time with

his family, he was very close to his family. Above all, his friends and family said they want Staats to be remembered as a proud Aggie and a proud soldier. Staats is survived by his wife, father Bobby Staats, mother Lorna Eckhardt, brother class of 1993 Garrett Staats, and sister Jennifer Staats Terry. Stratton Stratton died May 26, 2009, of injuries from an explosion. He was serving as the commander Stratton of Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team. Stratton graduated from Foley High School in Foley, Ala. and while attending A&M was member of the Corps of Cadets. “Their mission was to devise jobs that the Afghan men could take part of, said Jennifer Stratton, Stratton’s wife. “Some were building schools for girls and some were providing health care to the residents there. Jennifer said the Afghan people appreciated what the Americans were doing for them, and Stratton told her the gig ’em sign was used among the children there. “Mark was a very friendly, outgoing person. He had a nice smile and a firm handshake, Jennifer said. “If someone was having a bad time he would always give them kind words. Jennifer said Stratton loved his country whole-heartedly and was a loving and faithful husband. She said he believed in his mission. Stratton is survived by his wife and three children, Delaney, 7, Jake, 5, and AJ, 3.

Muster worldwide

Ann Littmann The Battalion The well-known photo of the Aggie Muster led on the Island of Corrigedor by Gen. George Moore during World War II captures the heart of the Aggie tradition of Muster, a tradition still celebrated around the world today. Every year, more than 400 Muster ceremonies take place around the world. From small informal gatherings to formal events in ornate ballrooms, Aggies within 100 miles of each other gather to remember those no longer with them. Last year, 42 international ceremonies were reported, and this year will be no different with ceremonies planned in Afghanistan, Peru, Kosovo, London, Korea, Canada and Port-au-Prince. “These Muster gatherings are held in many unique places ranging from battleships and foxholes during World War II to ballrooms and steakhouses today,” said Navarro County Muster chairman and class of 1970 Paul Tannehill. In Corsicana, Texas, the Muster activities include a Howdy mixer and dinner at the Corsicana Country Club and a speech by Corsicana Mayor C.L. “Buster” Brown III, class of 1965. Fort Davis will have a Texas Aggie Muster to honor Aggies who died in the past year. Muster chairman John Morlock, class of 1977, said multiple activities, including dinner and a presentation on developments at Fort Davis National Historic Site, will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the parade ground at the fort. Although an informal Muster was on Sunday in Killeen, the event will take place, as tradition dictates, on Wednesday, without the address given by

Former students gather in Killeen to sing the Aggie War Hymn during a Muster ceremony on Sunday. Col. Bill Hill (a 1984 graduate of Texas A&M) and garrison commander at Fort Hood. Hill’s speech focused on the milestones in Aggie history, including the 10th anniversary of the collapse of Aggie Bonfire. Hill said that at A&M, “We used the Bonfire to build Aggies.” Killeen-Fort Hood A&M Club President Beth Deuermeyer, class of 2006, said although each Muster ceremony is unique, it must follow the tradition ordained in 1923. “If there is an A&M man in 100 miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas,” Deuermeyer said. Central to the modern Muster is a search of a list compiled by the University of graduates who died since the past Muster. Attendees who know anyone on the list may have the name read and light a candle. The roll call is a roster of former and current students who died over the past year. As each name is called, a friend or fam-

ily member will answer ‘‘Here’’ symbolizing that the memory lives on in the hearts of Aggies everywhere. “Muster is more than just a ceremony; it is also an annual way for Aggies to renew the loyalty and unity which constitute the foundation of their friendship for each other as well as their love and devotion for their school,” said Melissa Brauks, a junior geological sciences major. Deuermeyer said the KilleenFort Hood club has an informal event on the Sunday preceding April 21 to allow more people to attend. The Muster, which dates from 1883, took place on various dates in various places until the day was set as April 21 in 1903 to coincide with the date in 1836 when forces led by Sam Houston defeated the Mexican army in the struggle for Texas independence. Texas was a nation from that time until it became part of the U.S. 10 years later. The April 21 date was a custom until alumni made it official in 1922.
