A&M to host Iraqi students Iraq’s newest scholarship provides the opportunity for students to earn degrees abroad
Pg. 1-07.30.09.indd 1
Rebekah Skelton The Battalion This fall, Texas A&M University will have Iraqi students participating in their country’s newest scholarship program. Over the next five years, Iraq intends to send up to 50,000 students abroad to earn their bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. The program will begin by sending about 500 students to England and the U.S. this fall to be trained in English before beginning coursework in academic programs. Students later will study at universities in Canada, Japan, France and Australia. “The U.S. and Iraqi governments have been working cooperatively to assist the Iraqi people in rebuilding their infrastructure,” said Suzanne Droleskey, A&M’s executive director of the international
programs for students. “Providing an opportunity for talented Iraqi students to study in the U.S. helps to achieve that goal. It also provides a foundation for future cooperative activities between Iraq and the U.S., when these students return to Iraq after graduation to work in education, government and industry.” Twenty two American universities and 21 British universities will participate, including Vanderbilt, Ohio State, the University of Cambridge and Newcastle University. A&M was asked to participate in the program through the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture of Texas A&M, which has been involved in agricultural development projects in Iraq. “Because of these programs to help the Iraqi people develop sustainable agricultural
production as an effort toward encouraging independence and security, Texas A&M is well known in the country,” Droleskey said. “As a result, the Borlaug Institute was invited by the Iraqi government to facilitate Texas A&M participation in an educational fair that was the first step of the Iraqi Education Initiative.” Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced the Iraq Education Initiative in Washington Saturday at the nonprofit organization Academy for Educational Development in Washington, D.C. “Today, with the stability and the security back in Iraq, we are moving forward,” alMaliki said. The Iraqi government is funding the program and will pay for tuition and fees, as well

Senior biology major Matt Kriger and graduate public service and administration student Nicole Parker play the lead roles in the Theatre Company’s production of the famous Broadway musical “Damn Yankees.”

Theatre Company closes season with ‘Damn Yankees’ Clay Harley The Battalion The Bryan-College Station community theater organization, The Theatre Company, will open its production of the 1956 Broadway musical “Damn Yankees” Friday at the Tejas Center in Bryan. This musical comedy is considered a classic, and its original Broadway production won seven Tony Awards in 1956, including the award for Best Musical. This production will be The Theatre Co.’s last musical of the summer season. Some of the roles are performed by Aggies, including two of the leads. Playing the role of Joe Hardy is senior biology major Matt Kriger. He has been involved in theater since his junior year of high school and with The Theatre Company for more than two years. Nicole Parker, playing the role of Lola, is a graduate student in public service and administration at the Bush School and will graduate in May. Parker began performing as an undergraduate student at Sam Houston State University. She has been involved in numerous other productions with The Theatre Company. In the musical, the char-

At the beginning of the musical, Boyd, a die-hard fan of the baseball team the Washington Senators, sells his soul to the devil, or Mr. Applegate as he is called. In exchange for his soul, Boyd becomes a young slugger named Joe Hardy destined to lead the Senators to victory over the New York Yankees. About playing the role of Hardy, Kriger said, “I like this one because I’m actually 21. So it’s kind of nice to play somebody who’s actually my age. A lot of times you play roles that are for 30-year-olds.” The character Lola is a sultry temptress who has already
sold her soul to the devil (Mr. Applegate). Mr. Applegate sends Lola to seduce the young Hardy, who is having doubts about his decision to sell his soul. “Lola has no inhibitions, and that’s always fun,” Parker said on playing the character. Rehearsals for a given production at The Theatre Company begin three to four weeks prior to opening night. They start on a more specific level and work their way up to full scale dress rehearsals, which take place the week before the show. The musical accompaniment for the singers is played by a live band. The band and actors practice separately until dress rehearsal week. “The band sounded fabulous [Monday],” Parker said. The final week of rehearsals is “usually pretty hectic,” Kriger said, but Kriger and Parker said the show is ready for opening. “I think we were really ready ahead of time. This production came together really easily,” Parker said. Aggies are often involved in The Theatre Company productions while simultaneously taking classes at A&M. “My sophomore year I was taking organic chemistry and physics
and I did about three shows, and it kind of showed in my GPA a little bit,” Kriger said. However, overall, the combination of school and performance is, according to Parker, “not actually that bad. The hard week is the week when we do dress runs.” The man responsible for coordinating and conducting rehearsals is artistic director Randy Wilson. Wilson has directed 47 plays at The Theatre Company, and has been involved with many theater productions for more than 30 years. He played Pontius Pilate in the Broadway production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” “Randy knows what he’s doing; he’s been doing this forever,” Parker said. Parker said people should always take the opportunity to see live theater. “I think you should come see live theater any time you can. I think it’s a different art form. It’s different than a movie or book. And it’s supporting the community,” Parker said. Community support is also important to Kriger. “I think this is just a really great organization, The Theatre Company. It’s really family friendly,” he said.

n the afternoon of July 22, I received a call from one of The Battalion’s editors telling me there had been a break-in and vandalism at the Bright Football Complex and asking if I could go by to get a photo of the damage. I thought to myself, “this will be easy, I’ll be done in no time.” When I arrived at the Bright Football Complex, I was given the usual response of “you’ll have to speak with media relations.” The receptionist was kind enough to call the media relations office for me. While she was on the phone I thought to myself again: “I’ll be done in no time.” However, the response from the media relations office puzzled me. They couldn’t offer me any information and said I should contact the University Police Department. I thought this was strange. How could UPD help me get a photo of vandalism in the Bright Football Complex when they were way over on West Campus — and I was standing in the lobby of the building I wanted to photograph? Starting to get annoyed, I called UPD. After talking to the receptionist, I was forwarded to assistant chief Bert Kretzschmar. He told me what I expected to hear: UPD could not release any information on an open investigation.
Jeremy Northum
By refusing to comment on the break-in, officials are violating the Aggie Honor Code. If we wanted photos from the scene we would have to file an open records request (The Battalion has since done so.) He took down my name and phone number and said he would forward my request to Chief of Police Elmer Schneider. Schneider called me back an hour or so later and basically reiterated what the assistant chief had told me: UPD could not release any photos. By this time I was ready to give up. The Athletics Department was giving me the media relations run-around and UPD would not give any information on an open investigation. I called The Battalion’s office to give an update, and our editor in chief asked me to go back one more time just to see if I could get photos of anything — if not the vandalism itself, perhaps the room where
the vandalism took place. I was really quite tired of messing with this, but went back again. I asked if I could go further than the lobby into the Bright Football Complex to take some photos of the vandalism, police tape, the room where the vandalism took place — just take a photo of anything. I was promptly told that everything had been cleaned up and that there was nothing to take a photo of. I was also told that I was not allowed to go past the lobby. If the damage had been cleaned up, then why was there a problem with taking a photo of the crime scene? By this time I was beginning to get a little suspicious. What are they trying to hide? A few hours later another Battalion staff member went to Bright building to try again, for the third time, to get a photo. They were told that since they were not an athlete they were not allowed in the building. OK, fair enough, but again, what are they trying to hide? After further discussion with UPD and the Athletics Department, The Battalion learned that the offender had been identified as someone with access to the football locker rooms and that the Athletics Department would not press charges. Really? The Texas A&M football
program was the victim of theft and vandalism and the matter will not be pursued? Are we talking about the same football program? I started the afternoon with the simple task of taking a photo of some childish vandalism by an irate or disgruntled person. By the end of the day I was thinking about a larger issue: why was the Athletics Department being so “hush, hush” about this matter? It appears they are trying to protect an insider from any punishment by presenting a cursory investigation to the media in hopes the matter would just go away quickly. Well, our plan was to not let that happen. I had another thought related to this incident; A&M students are bound by the Aggie Honor Code: “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do.” While the code only governs academic behavior, I thought it would be interesting to apply the last clause “or tolerate those who do” to this incident. Did the Athletics Department tolerate theft (and vandalism) in this case? And if so, should the rest of us tolerate them tolerating such illegal actions? I think we should not. Jeremy Northum is a Battalion staff photographer and a nuclear engineering graduate student.

petition ■ College Station counts 964 signatures against red light cameras The petition to ban red light cameras, which was submitted to College Station staff for review July 16, was certified by the city July 22. The petition was required to have 846 signatures, or 25 percent of the total voters in May’s election, to come to a vote, and 964 were counted. “The next step is submit results to the City Council at the next regular meeting on Aug. 17 for them to take action or put it before the voters on the fall ballot,” said College Station assistant public communications director Wayne Larson. The petition had more than the necessary amount of signatures, said petition circulator Jim Ash. “We turned in about 1,200 signatures and they stopped counting because they had a comfortable margin over.” The ban will likely pass legislation, he said. “I cannot find a single city in the United States that has voted to keep red light cameras. I don’t anticipate College Station being any different.” Meagan O’Toole-Pitts, city editor

as room and board. About $54 million has been set aside for the first year of the program, with the estimated cost for each student to be about $50,000 annually. Students may choose their field of study, but are encouraged to go into engineering, education or business, and are expected to return to Iraq after graduating. Zuhair Humadi, special assistant to the prime minister for educational matters, said that the Iraq Education Initiative will “open up Iraq, which has been isolated for 50 years, and really let it get back to a normal situation.” After prospective students apply to the program, they must apply to the university they wish to attend. Admission into the program does not guarantee acceptance into their chosen university. Once renowned for its engineering and medical schools, Iraq’s educational system has been deteriorating since the Gulf War, due to economic restrictions and war-related violence. “Instead of armies and war and killing and occupation, we’re moving to something more meaningful,” Humadi said, “namely, economic development, education and exchanges of students and professors.” The program will help the U.S. develop strong ties to the Middle East, which is critical for political and economic relations. “This is an important opportunity for Texas A&M to continue the efforts begun by the Borlaug Institute to help in the rebuilding of Iraq,” Droleskey said. “It provides Texas A&M faculty, staff and students with the opportunity to build personal, academic and professional relationships with more students from this region of the world.”
