Credit Scores will make or break you

Megan Ryan The Battalion Debt can be horrifying, especially for college students who spend most of their time going to class, studying and doing things that aren’t earning money to pay off debt. Mark Mielke, certified financial planner, has tips from Money Wise Aggies to explain the importance of having a good credit score. “High scores will help borrowers obtain a low interest mortgage when they purchase a home,” he said. “It will lower the interest rate on credit card debt and most other types of debt. But in addition to lowering debt costs, maintaining a high score can be useful for other reasons. Insurance companies often use credit scores in determining premiums charged to their customers.” “If you have credit card debt, try to pay off the entire balance due each month, but always at least pay the minimum amount due on time,” Mielke said.

But in addition to lowering debt costs, maintaining a high score can be useful for other reasons. Insurance companies often use credit scores in determining premiums charged to their customers.” — Mark Mielke certified financial planner at Money Wise Aggies

Some students think having a credit card in college isn’t necessary. “Credit cards are a bad idea. Students tend to get too wrapped up in their college life to realize the debt they’re racking up,” said Shelly Mozingo, junior business administration major. “It’s easy to swipe a card, but it’s a swift kick from reality when you get the bills.” Claire Poirier, junior management major, agreed because she has friends still in debt from credit cards. “I think you have to be really responsible with your money to get a credit card, otherwise you can get in a lot of trouble,” she said. “I know people that are thousands of dollars in debt because they weren’t responsible.” However, Mielke said it is not terrible to have a credit card, and that using one wisely can help build a good credit report. “Credit cards can be used responsibly by adults of all ages, but using credit cards unwisely can have huge negative impacts on students’ lives for years to come,” he said. “When used properly, credit cards can be a convenient method of payment for needed items that enables the users to prove they can responsibly manage credit and increase their credit scores.” Mielke said there are other ways of building good credit if students don’t feel comfortable with using a credit card. “Federal student loans with a reasonable, fixed interest rate will contribute to a credit history once the student begins repayment of the loan,” he said. If students would rather wait to build credit scores, there are suggestions from other students about less risky payment methods. “I have a debit card that takes money right out of my checking account,” Poirier said. “It is super convenient. I just have to watch my balance and avoid overdraft.” Mozingo said debit cards are the best bet to avoiding surprising bills.

“That Chris Griffin — THE BATTALION way you know you won’t spend more than what you have, Ways and they also have daily to earn limits on how much you credit can spend,” she said. “It’s the fastest method, ■ Credit cards and you can always keep ■ Federal student loans up with your balance ■ Property with online banking.” ■ Automobile Not only does it have to do with credit companies, but credit scores are also important for living and employment situations. “Landlords often check credit scores in approving apartment rentals,” Mielke said. “It is not uncommon for employers to review credit scores in making their hiring decisions.” Mielke and students said it is up to the person to determine levels of responsibility and to decide the best payment method.

Johnny Cooper releases average album Clay Harley Twenty-one-year-old native Texan Johnny Cooper has recently released a new album, “Follow.” Cooper is currently touring across Texas and will be playing in College Station Friday, and again on Nov. 18. Both shows will be at Hurricane Harry’s. Cooper is the singer and songwriter and guitarist for his act, simply called Johnny Cooper. He plays with a typical rock and roll setup: guitars, bass, keyboard and drums. Cooper’s previous album, “Ignition,” featured country influences, but in “Follow,” Cooper leans more into the territory of pop with hints of other genres. The songs on this album are lyrically about what you’d expect from someone this age. Cooper recently turned 21, so most of the songs were likely written when he was 19 or 20. The lyrics are not too insightful or mature, but they are honest and hopeful, and will likely resonate with younger listeners. Inside the album’s casing, each track is listed, along with a few sentences written by Cooper describing the track’s meaning. These “song stories,” as they are titled, are a clever idea, and something I had never seen before. They succeed in making the songs personal, and they help the listener to understand what the songs are about— even if they do look like snippets of an AIM conversation. The instrumentation on the album is solid, but unoriginal. Don’t expect to hear anything new; the songs will sound pretty similar to anything you may have heard on a mainstream radio station. Not that that’s always bad, but it can get a bit boring. Cooper’s band is tight, and the sound on

“Follow” is clear. There’s a rock and roll feel throughout, with hints of funk, R&B, country and a large dose of pop. Cooper has a strong voice live and in the studio, but his melodies are average, as is the music. Standout tracks are, “Somewhere In Between,” “Take Your Number” and “Follow.” “Somewhere In Between” features a nice introduction and buildup throughout the song. Cooper describes his thoughts about finding a balance in life in the lyrics.“Take Your Number” has a fun, funky groove which includes a horn riff and a fat beat. In “Follow,” the title track, an electric guitar outlines the beat, subdividing chords into almost-staccato eighth notes. The riff is audible in the introduction, and then again every time the music quiets down, providing a strong foundation in the song. This album’s strongest point is that its content is very positive and encouraging. Cooper is earnest in his writing and obviously cares about the music, and it shows. And he clearly places value on establishing a real connection with his listeners, which is admirable. This group also has great sound live. Cooper has been playing live shows since he was 15. He and his band are quite talented, and his upcoming performance at Hurricane Harry’s should please existing fans and newcomers alike.

Clay Harley is a senior information and operations management major.

child rights & you

Organization seeks to restore children’s rights Laura A. Sanchez The Battalion Texas A&M is known for being a University that takes pride in giving back to the community and helping others in need. Some Aggies have taken this concept and reached those in need far outside the Bryan-College Station area. Child Rights and You, CRY, is a nonprofit organization that seeks to restore the basic rights of children and help those who are underprivileged. “Child Rights and You was initially an organization that was formed in India in 1979. It was just a group of about seven friends who decided to work towards the betterment of living conditions of children in India,” said Trijya Singh, vice president of the College Station action center for CRY. Nationally, CRY America, Inc. has multiple action centers across the nation that work to help ensure children’s rights. CRY America is a subdivision of CRY India, where the corporation began. Since 2003, the College Station action center has been recognized by Texas A&M as being an official center. “The purpose is the same —

right to survive for children, right to enjoy life, health, education, protection from exploitation,” Singh said. CRY focuses on four basic rights: the right to participation, the right to protection, the right to development and the right to survival. “With CRY, you can send money to educate a kid for a year, and they do it for a low price. Then you get feedback from the kids thanking you for all your help and support,” said Bhavana Sudhakaran, president of the College Station action center for CRY. TAMU CRY holds various fundraisers and volunteer efforts throughout the year to raise money for both children in India and kids locally in the Bryan-College Station area. “Last Saturday we went to help at the Boys and Girls Club Annual Day. We also did Big Event. We have a backpack program for the lower income kids that don’t usually get food during the weekends. We collect food and sort them into backpacks and give them to the children. We did some activities for Hurricane Ike relief and our kid’s talent show is coming up where we have

It will be on Oct. 10 at 4:40 p.m. in Koldus 301,” Sudhakaran said. TAMU CRY also holds an annual “Bollywood Night” dance fundraiser that will be held on Oct. 31 at the Student Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m. There will be free Indian food and tickets will be available two weeks prior. CRY America has helped more than 156,000 children in 1,211 communities in India, Rabadi said. It is run by volunteer efforts and works to forward money to India annually. “I used to work with underprivileged people in India and there was this child that loved to paint. I asked him what he

liked to do and he said he liked to draw and paint a lot and I told him he should do that. Then he said that his mother didn’t have enough money to eat, so she couldn’t buy him any paint. “It made me think about all that I take for granted. I think about John F. Kennedy’s quote: ‘If not now then when, if not me then who.’ I always wanted to be a part of this. There are these certain moments in life when you just go back and evaluate everything you have and take for granted,” Singh said. If interested in becoming a part of CRY, there will be an informational session on Sept. 23 in Harrington Room 201 at 7:30 p.m.

Bringing in It’s pronounced the Blazers Aggies look to contain UAB’s dual threat quarterback Brad Cox

Kris-tuhn Natasha Sankovich — THE BATTALION

Freshman sensation Christine Michael is a lesson in humility David Harris The Battalion Name the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a rabbit on steroids. Might a 5-foot-11-inch, 206-pound freshman running back be popping into your head? Christine Michael’s all-state talent has left many of his teammates at a loss for realistic comparisons. It has forced Aggie faithful to dream of the days of Rodney Thomas, Greg Hill and Darren Lewis. And it has led Michael from Beaumont to Aggieland. But behind the spin moves and highlight reel runs is a laid back, relaxed attitude. Behind the soft-spoken tone is the oft referred to best singer on the team. And behind the

thick, bruising body is a man that represents the ultimate in humility and appreciation. It comes, he says, from his stepfather, who happens to be a preacher back home. “He’s taught me to be an overall humble guy,” Michael said. “It’s taught me respect and knowing where your gift comes from. You’re not in it by yourself, and when you do well, you should give thanks.” The self-proclaimed Rascal Flatts fan isn’t exactly like your regular 18-year-old, given that he is playing on a weekly basis in front of 80,000 fans. But like any other freshman, he’s dealing with missing his mother’s cooking, her spaghetti in particular and most of all, his best friend, his mother. “The toughest thing I’ve had to deal with has been leaving home,” Michael said.

“Leaving my mom. She’s my best friend. I talk to her every day. We’ll call and chat about school and football and everything else in life.” Michael’s arrival in Aggieland was one that, following a 4-8 season, was welcomed. Michael, a “five star recruit,” became the most highly touted recruit to come to A&M since Martellus Bennett five years ago. “The atmosphere here was what got me,” said Michael of his decision to attend A&M. “I felt comfortable here. Nobody was looking at me differently, and it just felt like home.” But with the prestigious ranking comes an expectation for greatness, especially at

The Battalion Before Texas A&M’s game against Utah State, defensive coordinator Joe Kines said the Aggies were going to have a tough time containing Utah State’s quarterback. Diondre Borel backed up Kines’ claim, passing for 334 yards and rushing for 34 more in a 38-30 loss to A&M. The bad news for the Aggies, Kines said, is UAB’s quarterback Joe Webb, who A&M will face Saturday at Kyle Field, is as good, if not better than Borel. “Their quarterback has carried the ball over 50 times,” Kines said. “It’s not pulling it down and running, it’s quarterback powers, quarterback sweeps, quarterback lead draws. They do a nice job with their offense, and put a lot of pressure on you to be right up front.” A&M Head Coach Mike Sherman said Webb is bigger, stronger and probably

faster than Borel. Webb is ranked No. 8 in the nation in rushing yards per game with 122.33 and is the only quarterback in the Top 50 rushing leaders. The next quarterback after Webb, Georgia Tech’s Josh Nesbitt, is ranked No. 63. “Their whole offense is built around him for the most part, the running game and the passing game obviously,” Sherman said. “He’s extremely fast.” By comparison, Aggies’ junior quarterback Jerrod Johnson is the fourth-highest quarterback in rushing yards and is ranked No. 76 nationally. Not only will the A&M defense be busy with Webb, the UAB defense will have its hands full with Johnson, who leads the top offense in the nation in total yards with 589.5 per game. “Mike Sherman, the head coach, really runs the offense and they do a nice job,” said UAB Head Coach Neil Cal

The UAB Blazers are 1-2 and have lost two consecutive games since opening the season

with a 44-24 win against Rice. UAB junior running back Daniel Borne said the team is trying to redeem itself after its two losses, and he doesn’t expect A&M to see the Blazers as a threat, presenting a possible trap game. “It is a money game for us, but nowhere in the contract does it say we have to take a whipping, Callaway said. “We’re going to go out there to win the football game. Similar to A&M’s game against Utah State, the defense will be the key to the game. The top defensive playmakers for A&M are sophomore defensive back Trent Hunter, who leads the team in tackles with 17, and junior “jack linebacker Von Miller, who leads the nation in sacks per game at three. “[Webb] will be one of the top quarterbacks that we’ll play this year, Hunter said. “On ESPN, they were talking about how he is one of the top five dual threats in the nation, so I’m excited to see how he’s going to test us this week.

Red light, green light James Cavin

Red light rocket cannons should inspire motorists to show respect for the law.

T

oday we’re going to talk about red light cameras. For those of you unfamiliar with the red light camera, I’ll offer a brief technological description. A red light camera is a (drum roll please) camera, stationed at a red light. The camera is set up with a censor so that vehicles entering the intersection whilst the light is red are photographed. The owners are then tracked down by their license plate number, and mailed a school photo package order form, allowing them to select from four print sizes and five backgrounds, not to mention optional air-brush removal of paintjob blemishes. OK, so the owners are actually mailed the photograph of their car in the intersection and a ticket. This process seems simple enough, but has generated an incredible amount of rabble-rousing furor. “That’s just un-American,” complained one acquaintance of mine. Other common labels include “un-Constitutional,” “an invasion of privacy” and “annoying.” These accusations are as unfounded as they are stupid. America is a land of freedom, and that means the freedom of a private entity (like say, for instance Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions, Inc.) to go out and perform police functions to make the city money. And this whole “invasion of privacy” argument is completely bogus. You forfeit privacy when you commit a crime. Is the police department “invading my privacy” when they raid my basement meth lab? If you don’t want red light photos of you taken by a non-police organization, then don’t break the law. Just like if you don’t want your head beaten in by Texas-based James With A Baseball Bat Inc., then don’t jaywalk in front of my house. Vigilante organizations for the win. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go stab myself in the face for using the phrase

James Cavin — THE BATTALION

“for the win.” So as we’ve thoroughly established, privatized red light cameras are a good thing. There is, however, one complaint I have not addressed. What happens if the driver is someone other than the vehicle’s owner? The owner gets slapped with the fine, and that jerk gets away scott-free. That’s right, red light cameras are doing a lot, but it’s just not enough. Which is why I am petitioning the city to replace all red light cameras with red light automated gun turrets. It works just like the current camera setup, except instead of sending you a ticket in three weeks, it sends you an armor-piercing explosive projectile right then. Just imagine the benefits: increased deterrents, no repeat offenders and you know for certain you got the right driver. Now you may think that this defeats one

of the side effects of red light cameras, namely generating revenue for the city. However, under the Cavin Traffic Enforcement plan, a violator’s entire estate would be willed to the city. Crime would be down, revenue would be up and driving would never be boring again. And for all you rabble out there shouting accusations of being “un-American” and “unConstitutional” think about this: shooting people for breaking the law is one of the most time-honored American traditions ever. If you don’t want to die, don’t break the law. Now, there may be some legal questions about police using deadly force to stop a non-violent crime... so it’s a good thing we’re using private companies. In fact, I see this as the start of a glorious national movement. If private companies can be

used to enforce traffic violations, why not use private companies to enforce other crimes? Like say, insider trading or infomercials? Think of all the policemen who would still be alive today if their jobs had been given to private security agencies. Just imagine a world policed by deputized vigilante organizations. Orbital lasers that fry litterers. Pinpoint bombing runs on public smokers. SCUD missiles for people that talk in theaters. The possibilities are almost endless. Also, these private security agencies should be made up entirely of robots, because I have seen “RoboCop,” and they are awesome. Now if you’ll excuse me, someone is trying to jaywalk across the street outside my window. James Cavin is a junior English major.

J.D. Swiger — THE BATTALION

David Harris The Battalion For the No. 10 Texas A&M soccer team, the nonconference portion of the schedule has been a lesson in coping with change. With 19 underclassmen on the roster and many freshmen playing important roles, the team has gone through a transition of sorts. However, the learning process is over as the Aggies begin their Big 12 schedule with a road trip to Baylor on Friday and Oklahoma on Sunday. Prior to last weekend, the Aggies had lost three consecutive matches against Top 10 teams, however a 3-1 defeat of No. 2 Portland ended that streak. And, with a decisive victory over Sam Houston, A&M has its first winning streak of the season. Offensively, the team has put up 18 goals in their first eight contests. Junior forward Whitney Hooper leads the team with four goals and sophomore defender Bri Young follows her with three. Young is also a part of a defense that has been improving since a surprising loss to Purdue early in the season. “I’ve been pleased with the progress our defense is making every day in training and from game to game, said Head Coach G Guerrieri. “We seem to be playing more and more like one unit who’s thinking and playing in a coordinated fashion. The team comes into the weekend having given up eight goals in eight games. They have allowed only eight shots per game and the goalies have been forced to make only 16 saves. “We’ve been playing some of the best soccer we’ve ever played together, Young said. “Against Portland, I think it finally started to show itself. Young, senior Emily Peterson and sophomores Becca Herrera and Rachel Balaguer comprise the starting unit that

Sophomore defender Bri Young is second on the team in goals as women’s soccer starts its Big 12 season in Waco on Friday.

held the leading offense in the country, No. 1 North Carolina, scoreless through almost 80 minutes. “We have become a lot more solid as a backline, Herrera said. “We got our confidence up against North Carolina and only giving up 12 shots to the best offense in the country. It really set us up for the Big 12 season. With conference play beginning, the defense knows they have to continue playing well on the backline. “With Big 12 play starting, our confidence has got to be there, Young said. “We’re the leaders of the team. We have to make sure that everyone is accountable and just go out and play our hardest. Baylor and Oklahoma both play very similar, direct styles. It’s a change of pace for A&M, which likes to play possession soccer. “We play best when we possess the ball, Young said. Baylor’s style gave A&M fits last season when the Aggies escaped with a narrow 1-0 victory. The Bears, this season, sit at 4-1-2 and have been paced by junior forward Lotto Smith with four goals. Oklahoma brings in a 5-31 record to the start of Big 12 play. Junior forward Whitney Palmer heads the Sooner attack with seven of their 16 goals. “[Oklahoma and Baylor] will try to make the field smaller, Herrera said. “They play very direct and try to pack everyone in. The Aggies will try to emulate the kind of success that they enjoyed in 2008 when they went 5-0-1 in their first six conference games. “We’ve played some very big, high profile opponents already this season, Guerrieri said. “I think those games have helped our players prepare for intense competitions like we’re going to see every week in the Big 12 portion of the season.
