Students are allowed 48 hours to develop a complete video game.

A&M hosts 48-hour video game competition Annual Game Jam draws more than 150 participants to design challenge By Veena Ghorakavi @vghorakavi

I

t can take months, even years to create a traditional video game, but Texas A&M students will work around the clock to create one in fewer than 48 hours. “Chillenium,” the annual student Game Jam hosted by the Department of Visualization, gives participants a two-day time limit to plan, design and code a video game. This event brings game developers across the country and works to foster a collaborative environment where more than 150 participants can connect with experienced professionals. Andre Thomas, a lecturer in the Department of Visualization, started working at Chillenium in 2014. He said Chillenium not only provides an atmosphere of learning and friendly competition but also an atmosphere of collaboration with peers. “Not only are they learning to develop games in 48 hours — a process that normally takes an entire semester — they are connecting with like-minded people,” Thomas said.

Ben House, a visualization graduate student and a committee member for Chillenium, said winners will receive licenses for Unity Pro and Houdini Indie — software used for game development — and other participants can take part in raffles to win a computer tablet, gift cards and other prizes. House said Alienware Live — the computer hardware branch of Dell — will be outside the complex Friday and Saturday. “Alienware will be hosting their own gaming competitions, and giveaways before the Jam kicks off at 5 p.m.,” House said. “Side FX Software is also providing all participants three months of Houdini Indie for free, so they can use the incredible power of procedurally created content to make their games.” Cameron Coker, a visualization graduate student, said Chillennium is only as good as the participation and support that they get from students, local businesses and the gaming community. “This year we are lucky to have over 150 Texas A&M students registered for the event, more than 30 student and faculty volunteers and several local restaurants and busi-

nesses sponsoring the event,” Coker said. “This year the competitors and volunteers will really be astonished at just how much Chillenium has grown since last year.” Coker said the program is expected to have its largest turnout from previous years. “There’s more food, more industry mentors, bigger trophies, tougher competition — everything,” Coker said. “That amazing floor of support has catapulted Chillenium from a quickly growing backyard event to the largest student game jam in North America.” Game Jam starts at 5 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex and will end 48 hours later on Sept. 25.

Southwest showdown No. 10 Aggies set to face undefeated Arkansas Razorbacks in AT&T Stadium Backup quarterback Jake Hubanak runs the ball against Prairie View A&M.

FILE

By Heath Clary @Heath_Clary

F

or the third straight season, No. 10 Texas A&M will square off with Arkansas the AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Both teams enter the contest undefeated and ranked in the Top 25 in the polls, and the Aggies will attempt to make it three consecutive seasons starting out 4-0 for the first time since 1941. The Aggies (3-0, 1-0 SEC) are coming off of a 29-16 win over Auburn where the offense moved the ball effectively, the defense was stout and the special teams was terrific. One major aspect they struggled in, though, was punching the ball into the end zone and finishing long drives with seven points instead of three. A&M’s red zone woes did fuel sophomore kicker Daniel LaCamera’s perfect 5-of-5 field goal day, but Sumlin said the Aggies must improve in that area moving forward. “We get better on third down through practice; we just have to execute,” Sumlin said. “We recognize where we are. We have a lot to work on. We’re trying to address our problems. Third down conversions and the red zone are areas we need to work on.” The Aggies have won the past four meetings against the No. 17 Razorbacks, but the last three of those victories have not come easily. Overtime has been required in each of the last two year’s games, and A&M won both of those games by a touchdown. Last year’s contest saw the maroon and white win a tight 35-28 game, which prompted Bret Bielema to say he wanted to punch Sumlin. It was a joke, as Sumlin is good friends with the Arkansas head coach, and Sumlin reiterated that on Tuesday. The A&M defense looked excellent once again in the Aggies’ win over Auburn, and they continue to improve under the watchful eye of defensive coordinator John Chavis. The Aggies rank ninth in the country in sacks per game, are tied for seventh in tackles-for-loss per game, and they will look to put together another solid effort against an Arkansas offense that is averaging nearly 35

points per game at this point in the season. “We’ve got to continue to grow,” said Chavis, who is in his second year at A&M. “We’ve got to continue to get better as a defensive unit. Us coaches too. We’ve got to do a better job coaching and in preparation.” Arguably the biggest play from the Aggies’ Auburn win was the 89-yard touchdown dash from freshman running back Trayveon Williams. He has displayed speed and ability in his first games as an Aggie, but offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said he has excelled in other areas as well. “Where he has really earned my trust is in pass protection,” Mazzone said. “The running part of it, he’s a very dynamic guy with the ball in his hands and the more he plays I think the more complete of a back [he will become].” The Razorbacks (3-0) have been impressive this year as well. Junior Austin Allen has taken over nicely for his older brother, Brandon, who quarterbacked the squad from 2013-2015, and running back Rawleigh Williams III has rushed for the third-most yards in the SEC. The offense also features senior Jeremy Sprinkle, who is regarded as one of the top tight ends in the country. The Razorbacks’ season resume includes an impressive road victory over then-No. 15 TCU, an overtime thriller that the Razorbacks won in dramatic fashion 41-38. The A&M-Arkansas matchup always seems to be an exciting one, and the signs point to this year’s game being close as well. Both teams feature solid offenses, good defenses, and playing in a premier environment like AT&T Stadium could raise the level of performance even more. Sumlin said the players enjoy the venue, but the team is going to approach the matchup like they do any other one on the schedule. “Our players love playing there,” Sumlin said. “There’s a lot at stake, but no matter what happens Saturday, there’s a lot of football to be played. Our guys are just trying to be one week better and win this game. Our approach isn’t going to be any different.”

HALL OR NOTHING DAESHON HALL TALKS NFL ASPIRATIONS, ARKANSAS PREP

By Matt Koper @MattKoper

T

here’s something about being a starting defensive end for Texas A&M — whether it’s listening to soul music or wreaking havoc on opposing offenses. Senior defensive end Daeshon Hall fits the description to a tee. Hall is an opposing quarterback’s worst nightmare. Just ask Sean White of Auburn, who Hall forced into three hurries Sept. 17. “Daeshon Hall — I’d put him up against anyone as well,” A&M quarterback Trevor Knight said of his teammate. “So, that’s nice to have [Garrett and Hall] on the defensive side of the ball — I tell them both before every game, ‘Just keep me on the field,’ and they do a really good job of that.” Knight’s message to Hall resonated against Auburn. Following Hall’s fumble recovery, the ball was back in the offense’s hands and the unit was able to put three points on the board, giving A&M a 13-7 lead with five minutes left in the first half. Hall even made the tackle on fourth-and-three to help keep Auburn, who was down by 12 points, from scoring in the redzone. As a defensive end, Hall’s impact and work ethic extends to his teammates on the offensive line. Senior right guard Jermaine Eluemunor said he’s better prepared for any opponent after matching up against Hall and the defense during the week. “They challenge us every single day in practice,” Eluemunor said. “So going up against D-lines in the SEC won’t be anything new to us because we go up against the best D-line in the country.” So far in 2016, Hall has 12 total tackles, six solo and six assisted, to go with four quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery. Circling back to last season in 2015, Hall was a player that was highly touted as a NFL prospect and was dominate. In a breakout year, he had 54 tackles, seven sacks and 14 tackles for a loss. Hall announced on his personal Twitter ac-

count on Jan. 6 he would be back for a final “We all were very impressed with how season at A&M, and despite having so much A&M recruited him,” Gilbert said. “The lead success last season Hall said his work and time recruiter at that time was David Beaty, and with his teammates at A&M wasn’t quite fin- Coach Sumlin and Coach Price were all acished just yet. tively involved in recruiting Daeshon. Erika, “I still feel like I had a lot to prove and my his mom, she’s sharp as a whip, so she was body wasn’t where I wanted it to be,” Hall definitely a vital role in him going there.” said. “And I really just wasn’t ready to make the transition to being a professional — I still feel like I’m a big kid at heart. I wanted to be around my friends for one more year and just play with my teammates.” The big kid at heart — 6-foot-6, 270 Daeshon Hall, pounds to be exact — senior defensive end was born in Seattle and played high school football in Lancaster, Texas, for the Tigers and head coach Chris Gilbert. Hall was even teammates in Lancaster with junior defensive back Nick Harvey. When Gilbert first met Hall, nicknamed “Dae Dae,” his former player told him about his NFL aspirations in a basketball gym. Hall was quite the basketball player too — with offers to play college hoops for the Pac-12’s Washington and Washington State. “I think the biggest thing that sticks out to me still, is the first day I met him, just him telling me out of his mouth, he said, ‘Coach, basketball is my favorite sport, but I really think that I can play in the NFL,’” Gilbert said. After being touted as a four-star recruit for football and committing to play with the Washington Huskies in Seattle, he ultimately changed his mind and signed with A&M on national signing day Feb. 5, 2013. Gilbert credits Sumlin and his staff’s recruiting as well as Hall’s mother, Erika — who decided to stay in Texas — as the driving forces behind Hall ultimately signing with A&M.

“I always like the challenge.”

When Hall isn’t pressuring opposing teams’ quarterbacks or making stops on fourth down, he likes to sing, listen to music, fish and eat. “I’m a lil’ soulful dude,” Hall said. “I like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, all those people. A lil’ R. Kelly too, he’s nice with it.” In the meantime, before Hall can get to the NFL Draft in the spring — he currently sits at No. 135 on CBS Sports’ draft board — he’ll face Arkansas and its quarterback Austin Allen on Saturday night in AT&T Stadium. Hall said he’ll be ready for the team’s physical, nose-to-nose SEC running game. “I always like the challenge,” Hall said. “I always like somebody to try and hit me in my mouth and then just see who’ll hit back harder and hopefully it’ll be me.” When it’s all said and done and he lines up for his final snap for the maroon and white, Hall said he believes he’ll have left his mark on the team and his teammates. “I just want to be known as a great teammate,” Hall said. “A dude that gave his all for his teammates and just a great overall guy.”

AROUND THE SEC WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN WEEK 4 OF THE CONFERENCE

Angel Franco @angelmadison_

I

n a league like the Southeastern Conference, which prides itself on being the best in the nation, there is never a dull weekend. For the most part, SEC division matchups are some of the best games Saturdays have to offer. Much like Week Three, Week Four has an array of games that can cause major shifts in conference standings. Here are some of the most intriguing week four games.

continue building their momentum as they face the No. 1 Crimson Tide. But much like the last two non-power 5 conference teams the Tide has played this season, Kent State will not to be able to handle the hard-hitting stingy team that is Alabama. Prediction: Alabama 49, Kent State 7

Sept. 24, Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, AL — 11 a.m. CT SEC Network This will be the second time in five years Alabama will face Nick Saban’s alma mater and, much like last time, this game looks to be an easy win. However, with the way the Tide played last week against Ole Miss, this has the potential be an old fashioned trap game. The Flashes are coming off their first win of the season and look to

262 passing yards with 4 interceptions. With both teams looking to remain undefeated, this game will be a battle to the end, which will result this top-20 matchup going into overtime, with the Vols barely winning. Prediction: Tennessee 52, Florida 49 OT

Prediction: Georgia 38, Ole Miss 35

No. 12 Georgia at No. 23 Ole Miss Kent State at No. 1 Alabama

over Missouri. The Rebels’ two losses have come from teams who have had a freshman signal-caller start the game. However, the Rebels have a dynamic offense led by senior Chad Kelly that can easily put points on the board no matter the opponent. The Rebels’ offense proved its offensive strength in the first half versus the Tide, but the momentum is on the Bulldogs’ side.

Sept. 24, Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium, Oxford, Miss. — 11 a.m. CT ESPN For the second straight week, Ole Miss is tasked with yet another top-ranked opponent in the Bulldogs. Although the Bulldogs are not the no.1 team in the nation, they are coming off a momentum-building week that could potentially cause problems for the Rebels. The Bulldogs seem to have a solid quarterback in true freshman quarterback Jacob Eason. With just three games under his belt, Eason has thrown for 683 yards and five touchdowns, three of which came in the Bulldogs’ come-from-behind win

No. 18 LSU at Auburn No. 19 Florida at No. 14 Tennessee Sept. 24, Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, TN — 3:30 p.m. ET CBS

With Luke Del Rio down due to a knee injury, which he sustained in the Gators’ 32-0 victory over North Texas, this game will be close. The Gators will be going into a very tough venue to play in and despite having Austin Appleby, a graduate transfer from Purdue as their new quarterback, the Vols are the better team. Senior Joshua Dobbs will have to worry about the strong Florida secondary, which has allowed only

Sept. 24, Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, AL — 5 p.m. CT ESPN For the first time this season LSU will play an SEC road game. After Les Miles made the decision to go with junior quarterback Danny Etling, LSU’s offense seems to be a bit more balanced. If the Auburn run defense plays anything like it did against A&M, the Tigers will have a hard time containing Leonard Fournette out of the backfield. But if there’s one thing we can expect from Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn, it is that his focus this week was the run defense and how to effectively contain Fournette. The victor of the battle of the Bengals will be LSU. Prediction: LSU 24, Auburn 18

#ThrowbackThursday Last season, the Aggies beat the Razorbacks 28-21 in an overtime thriller. This is the third consecutive time A&M and Arkansas will face off in AT&T Stadium in Arlington. FILE

AGGIES IN THE NFL

Gary Kubiak

As the third week of the NFL season quickly approaches, there are several former A&M standouts who have made their presence known. By Grant Spika Photo via Creative Commons

The former A&M quarterback and current Denver Broncos head coach became the seventh-winningest coach in team history as Denver beat the Indianapolis Colts 34-20 on Sunday. A year after leading the Broncos to the franchise’s third Super Bowl victory, Kubiak has the Broncos undefeated at 2-0 on the young season.

Von Miller Von Miller has picked up where he left off in the Super Bowl last year as he continues to tear up NFL offenses. The pass rush specialist recorded three sacks and forced a fumble last Sunday in the Broncos’ win against the Colts. It’s early, but Miller is on pace for 32 sacks this year, which would shatter Michael Strahan’s NFL single-season sack record of 22.5. FILE

Mike Evans

FILE

Mike Evans has started his career hot, recording back-to-back 1000 receiving yard seasons in 2014 and 2015. He’s started 2016 hot as well, as he had 99 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ opener against the Falcons. Last weekend, Evans had 70 yards and another touchdown and has solidified himself as Tampa Bay’s number one receiver.

Ryan Tannehill Ryan Tannehill has started his fifth year as the Miami Dolphins’ starting quarterback strong with no turnovers on 29 pass attempts in the opener against the Seahawks. Last weekend, Tannehill threw for 389 yards with two touchdowns against the Patriots. The Dolphins are 0-2, but Tannehill still has plenty of time to right the ship.

Photo via Miami Dolphins

Brandon Williams Brandon Williams was a running back for the Aggies just two years ago, and now he’s been drafted in the third round as a cornerback and starting at the position for the Arizona Cardinals. Williams has been given decent playing time in Arizona’s first two games and the rookie recorded three tackles in Arizona’s 40-7 win over Mike Evans’ Tampa Bay Buccaneers. FILE
