Bears escape Reed, 63-60 Aggies fail to capitalize in game’s final seconds Austin Meek The Battalion The excitement of senior forward David Loubeau’s jump hook with 27 seconds to go quickly dissipated when Baylor’s Pierre Jackson drilled a threepointer on the next possession, giving the Bears a lead they would not relinquish as they went on to beat the Aggies 63-60.

“I’m really proud of our team, our fans, our students and the effort we gave today,” Texas A&M head basketball coach Billy Kennedy said. “I thought we outplayed Baylor in a lot of ways, but they’re a very good team.” Junior forward Ray Turner recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds against one of the most talented front courts in the nation, featuring potential NBA lottery draft picks like Perry Jones III and Quincy Miller. “Our bigs did a fantastic job of just taking it at them,” said freshman forward

Danny Alexander. “Loubeau, Keith, and Ray did an awesome job there. We stretched their defense out. Once you make them guard you out on the perimeter then that opens up a one-on-one game for our posts.” Alexander got his first career start for the injury depleted Aggies and came through in the clutch multiple times for his team as he scored 12 points in the game. With two minutes left, Alexander connected on a long ball that tied the See Baylor on page 2

Kevin Sumlin spoke to the media and answered questions regarding his new recruiting class for the Fall 2012 football season.

Sign on the dotted line A&M recruiting class provides hope for success in SEC Chandler Smith The Battalion A few surprises awaited A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin Wednesday as the 2012 recruiting prospects signed and processed their letters of intent to play football at Texas A&M. It is a class said to be one of the best in recent years, ranked No. 14 by Rivals.com; the Aggies landed their share of playmakers on both sides of the ball. The Aggies acquired a total of 19 players including, according to Rivals.com, six fourstar (out of five stars) prospects and Dekaney running back Trey Williams, the lone fivestar. Though highly-touted wide receiver Bralon Addison, a joint founder of the famous “Aggswagg” movement, committed to Ore-

gon in the waning days before deadline, A&M landed one of Texas’ best receiver prospects in Dallas: wide out Thomas Johnson. Likewise, after losing a top cornerback to LSU at the last minute, the Aggies punched right back, taking former OU blue-chip and Mesquite Horn defensive back DeVante Harris. Such was the drama of the days and hours before Wednesday’s signing deadline. As the end of the process neared, Coach Sumlin expressed excitement for the integration of his newest members. For a new staff arriving dangerously late in the recruiting process, Sumlin was pleased at what his staff maintained and built after a quick coaching transition. “When you look at those 19 commitments, eight of them are guys who this staff actively went and sought. For those guys to come in

with only a couple weeks for our guys to do that, that’s a testament to our staff,” Sumlin said. “From my standpoint, it’s a very successful day and we’re looking forward to getting on now with installation and spring football.” As the Aggies head to the rugged SEC, questions abound regarding A&M’s depth on defense — primarily on the defensive line. The SEC separates itself from other conferences through its depth along the line of scrimmage. Additionally, if the Aggies are to successfully transition to a 4-3 defense under defensive coordinator Mark Snyder, requiring more down-linemen than Tim DeRuyter’s 3-4 scheme, the Aggies must build depth on the defensive front. Sumlin feels his class, which includes five defensive linemen, is a step in the

Amber Jaura The Battalion After years of being vacant, plans are being revealed for the Plaza Hotel and Suites at Texas Avenue and University Drive. Woodridge Capital Partners LLC will rezone the 11.66-acre site by transforming the hotel into student housing and the surrounding area into retail and commercial spaces. The 17-story building at one of College Station’s busiest intersections was once a dormitory called University Tower, before it became the Plaza Hotel in 2004. The building was abandoned after bankruptcy in August 2010, and Woodridge Capital Partners acquired the property in June as of last year. Barbara Casey, public relations consultant for Woodridge Capital Partners, said the company planned a design to revive the property and utilize the close proximity to

A degree from Texas A&M may not be worthwhile if students can’t find a job postgraduation in a shaky economy and have tens of thousands of dollars in student debt to pay off. Instead of the promise of a hopeful future, our diplomas will quickly become a reminder of our desperate fight to stay

afloat in the face of staggering student loan debt. President Barack Obama has a plan, which he outlined during his recent State of the Union address. “When kids do graduate, the most daunting challenge can be the cost of college … Americans owe more in See Education on page 4

Signing Day right direction. “We have some guys [in this class] with big size, and we’re going to recruit defensive ends like that. For us it’s an area of need, and I think we were successful in addressing [that need], Sumlin said. “Any time when you’re building a championship team, you have to be strong and have some depth up front. In a short period of time, I think we were able to answer some of those questions. Offensively, meanwhile, the Aggies are adding the cream of the crop to an already loaded offensive unit. Blue-chip prospects including “Aggswagg found-

that

ing quarterback Matt Davis, five-star running back Trey Williams, wide receiver Thomas Johnson and offensive lineman Mike Matthews are only a few of the outstanding additions now donning the maroon and white. “They’re guys that understand what we do, what we have done in different places. Matt [Davis] is here, a lot of these guys we tried to recruit in Houston,

and they either threw away their mail or didn’t return our calls,â€? Sumlin said. “They’re exceptional guys. Trey [Williams] is as good as advertised ‌ Thomas [Johnson] is one of if not the best receiver in the state. ‌ The rest of the guys, we wouldn’t have recruited them if we didn’t think they could play.â€? When asked if any of the new recruits could see early playing-time, Sumlin reinforced his emphasis on competition and getting guys to work for a starting spot right away. “We wouldn’t have signed them if we didn’t think they can play here. We don’t sign guys to redshirt. I’ve never gone into a home and said we’re signing you so you can sit on the bench,â€? Sumlin said. “We get guys in here that want to compete to play.â€?

the second half, scoring 35 to the Bears’ 27, the opposition made buckets when it counted — the most significant being Jackson’s bomb in the waning seconds of the matchup. “Coach called a play for me to try to get open and get a shot, Jackson said. “I missed my previous three, even though it was wide open, but my team mates told me the next one was going to fall and it did. The Aggies had time for a rebuttal, but after junior guard Elston Turner’s corner three hit back rim and the Bears recovered the loose ball, Jackson hit two free throws to close out the game. The Aggies have a quick turnaround with Saturday’s matchup against Kansas State coming up. “We just have to build from here, Turner said. “The game tonight was a good game, a tough game, but we don’t let it bring us down. We have to just move on from here and try to get a win the next game.

The Aggies trailed by double digits at half, 36-25, and again looked sluggish as Jones scored the first bucket of the second period. However, hot shooting from Alexander, who converted 3-of-4 from behind the arc in the second half, got the Aggies back into the game and reengaged the crowd, which was by far the loudest audience at Reed Arena this season. “The crowd was real into it, said Quicy Acy Baylor forward Quincy Acy said. “They backed their players 100 percent. will be landscaped plazas and gardens. Jason Schubert, principal planner for development and planning in College Station, said Woodridge Capital Partners submitted an application and began discussing plans with the city last December. He said Woodridge Capital Partners finalized on redesigning the property through redevelopment and the city is supportive of these plans. “The city’s role is our comprehensive plan, which is a long-range planning document that shares how things we anticipate development for the next 20 years or so. On our plan this area is designated urban area, Schubert said. “We know this is an old area of the city so we recognize it’s likely to be redeveloped. It’s up to the owners based

It’s their property to redevelop or to do with it what so out of rezoning. Schubert said Woodridge Capital Partners proposed to rezone the land to a plan development district, incorporating both residential and commercial area. “What it will allow them to do is to commercial land and multifamily on the same property in a vertical mixed-use, Schubert said. “On the ground floor there will be commercial uses, whether it be restaurants or offices, and above them will be apartment use. Schubert said Woodridge Capital Partners has planned for 600 apartment units and three parking garages. He said Woodridge has yet to decide whether they will rehabilitate the existing Plaza Hotel building or demolish it and create a new structure that is more feasible for their plans. Miki Fan — THE BATTALION

Education Continued from page 1

tuition debt than credit card debt,” Obama said. This is unacceptable. This year, student-loan debt is expected to reach $1 trillion. Higher education should be an asset, not a hindrance when entering the real world, yet student loan debt prevents this from happening. Obama unveiled a solution Friday at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor when he said colleges and universities “can’t assume you’ll just jack up tuition every single year. If you can’t stop tuition from going up, then the funding you get from taxpayers each year will go down.” It’s a great idea. At a time when funding is scarce across the board, why continue to fund institutions that may no longer provide a high

value for students? Although federal funds provide money to students and not universities, it continues to sustain a process of overwhelming student debt. The federal government provides billions of dollars each year to students in the form of federal grants, workstudy programs and federal loans. If this disappears, receiving a degree from A&M may turn out to be unattainable for most. And we shouldn’t hold our breath for state funding to come through. Although Obama said, “States also need to do their part, by making higher education a priority in their budgets,” our state hasn’t gotten the memo. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is expected to soon disclose the amount of funding the state will provide per student for the next two years. It’s

expected to decrease from previous years. With diminishing state funds and the threat of federal funds disappearing, those who set tuition rates at our school, specifically the Board of Regents should take notice and immediately change its policy of increasing tuition rates year after year. The current trend of raising tuition is not sustainable. Sooner or later, students will not be able to afford the cost and that leaves our university and our nation in a dangerous place. I encourage our administration to take Obama’s threat seriously and instead of increasing our tuition, increase its efficiency and keep costs down.
