Aggies-Longhorns, the end

Jay Kapadia — THE BATTALION

The Reed Rowdies will welcome the Texas Longhorns to Reed Arena Monday at 8 p.m. This is the 222nd meeting between the bitter rivals.

Rivals desperate for win in final Lone Star Showdown Chandler Smith The Battalion The Aggies (12-10, 3-7) and Longhorns (14-9, 4-6) are locked in a showdown for the final time as members of the same conference when they hit the court 8 p.m. Saturday at Reed Arena. The nationally televised matchup will likely mean bragging rights for an extended, though indefinite, period of time, barring a rematch in the post-season — raising the stakes for what stands as the longest basketball series in A&M history. Though both teams have been regular NCAA tournament staples in recent years, A&M and Texas stumble into this contest after disappointing

starts in Big 12 play. The Aggies lost a heartbreaker to rival Baylor on Wednesday before a gamebreaking second-half collapse against the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday in Manhattan. Texas, meanwhile, is only one game ahead of A&M in conference after a win over last-place Texas Tech Saturday halted a two-game losing skid. In this season’s previous meeting between the two teams, the Longhorns won comfortably over the Aggies, 61-51, in Austin. A&M has since improved on the offensive side of the ball and has maintained defensive consistency, ranking first in the Big 12 in both scoring and three-point See Longhorns on page 8

Freshman forward Daniel Alexander provides a 3-point threat for the Aggies.

The Battalion Black ink in Hebrew lettering runs along the inside of freshman forward Daniel Alexander’s left bicep. “It’s Hebrew for ‘disciple,’” Alexander said of his tattoo. “My faith is most important and all glory goes to God for the situation that I’m in. I’m really working on, good or bad, giving the glory to him instead of just thanking him in the good or calling on him in the bad.” The word “disciple,” a term used to describe Jesus’ followers derived from the Latin “discipulus,” which means a pupil or learner, succinctly sums up Alexander’s life. Study basketball. Study Jesus. All the time. That’s the way it was last year, anyway, when he was forced to observe Mark Turgeon’s squad from the bench as a redshirt freshman. He said that, while See Alexander on page 6

Six inches of rainfall caused flooding across parts of BryanCollege Station this weekend. Jay Kapadia — THE BATTALION

Bacterial meningitis shots are available to students on-campus in A.P. Beutal Health Center for $110.

The Texas legislature expanded requirements for student meningitis vaccinations, effective Jan. 1. Texas Senate Bill 1107 requires all students under the age of 30 entering an institution of higher education to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis or meet specific criteria required to decline a vaccination before the first day of class. There are approximately 2,000 cases of bacterial meningitis every year in the U.S. The disease has two strains, bacterial and viral. While viral is more easily treated, serious cases of bacterial

meningitis can leave victims with permanent mental damage or be fatal. Efforts were made to inform students about SB 1107, including information on the Beutel Health Services website, the Admissions website and an email campaign targeting admitted applicants prior to their New Student Conference. The law requires that new students — incoming freshmen and transfer students — receive the immunization, but does not include students who attended the University in the fall. According to Rene Aguirre, a Beutel employee, many new students have visited Beutel to receive the vaccination during the See Meningitis on page 7

Many buildings on campus flooded as well as area homes, streets, highways and businesses. There were unconfirmed reports of tornado touchdowns in Snook that destroyed multiple unoccupied buildings and displaced several FedEx trucks that were parked near a shipping warehouse. No injuries were reported. Representatives from the Bryan Fire Department said emergency boats were ready in case a rescue mission was needed. Emergency dispatch received several water rescue calls in flooded areas, but the boats were never put to use. Areas of Bryan-College Station received as much as six inches of rainfall, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. There were two water rescues in College Station. Houses flooded as well as many businesses. Grand Station Entertainment reported that its parking lot flooded to the point of covering the hood of the parked vehicles. According to

No. 16 Aggies hold off No. 25 Jayhawks at home, 62-51 Mark Dore The Battalion Junior center Kelsey Bone shouldered the load for the No. 16 Aggies with a careerhigh 26 points in a victory over the No. 25 Kansas Jayhawks on Reunion Weekend, 62-51. A&M collected its third win in a row, despite blowing all but four points of a 17-point lead. The Aggies gained an interior advantage with Bone and sent key Jayhawks to the bench with foul trouble. The win pushed A&M to 7-3 in the Big 12 conference and 16-5 overall and dropped the Jayhawks to 16-6 and 5-5 in conference play. The Aggies made their first four shots for an 8-0 run in which Bone scored three of the baskets and assisted on the other. Head coach Gary Blair said that the up-tempo opening moments of the game went according to plan. “We wanted to make it as fast as we could, knowing they only like to play seven players at the most,” Blair said. “We were able to get into the post and do the things we wanted to do.” Senior guard Sydney Carter — whose 15 points made her the only other Aggie to reach double figures — said that the team is beginning to regain some of the chemistry that they had during last season’s national championship run. “It’s nice to finally get chemistry with this team,” Carter said. “We’ve been waiting so long to say we’re clicking and we’re gelling. It’s a transition from last year where we knew each other like the back of our hands. We carried that so long, it was a key reason why we won last year.” A&M’s defense smothered Kansas junior forward Caro-

◗ Junior center Kelsey Bone and senior guard Sydney Carter have scored double-digit points in 15 and 13 games this season, respectively.

◗ Junior guard Adrienne Pratcher had a team-high five assists from the night. ◗ The Aggies will resume Big 12 play against the Kansas State Wildcats at 7 p.m. Wednesday. lyn Davis and her 18.1 points per game that ranked second among all conference players. Davis finished with just six points in 30 minutes and was relegated to the bench in key portions of the game due to foul trouble. Bone said that prior experience against Davis helped her to win the battle in the post. “I played against her in high school, so I know her game a little bit,” Bone said. “I know if I attacked first, you don’t have to worry about guarding someone if they’re sitting on the bench in foul trouble. It was a part of our game plan.” Despite the defensive success, the Aggies allowed Kansas to work their way back into the game late. Kansas junior guard Angel Goodrich beat the shot clock to bring the Jayhawks within ten, 5040. Moments later, Goodrich

sunk a pair of free throws to shrink the Aggie lead to its lowest point of the second half at 55-51. Bone said that A&M’s status as defending national champions gives opposing teams extra motivation, even in the face of large deficits. “While we might get leads on a team, they’re always going to fight,” Bone said. “You’re not going to see us get a lead on a team and then see them lay down. We have to keep that killer instinct that you’ll see in the first 15 minutes of the game.” The Aggies would rally to make the necessary plays down the stretch as Bone converted a three-point play with 1:21 remaining to push the score to 58-51 and then stole the ball on the ensuing Kansas possession to effectively seal the game.

the itch to get on the court never subsided, the time spent off it taught him a lot about patience. “In the long run [the redshirt] was going to pay off because I could add some more mass and get more acclimated to the college game,” Alexander said. “At first it was just the most awful thing that’s ever happened because, you know, the thought of not getting to play basketball for a whole year was tough. It’s all the hard parts of college basketball … without ever getting to play.” Bulked up and armed with a fresh perspective a year later, Alexander calls the gap year a blessing in disguise. “I got to watch the game and really critique it. Now that I have opportunities to play just from past experiences I can use those to be more ready instead of just coming into it blind,” Alexander said. Alexander has parlayed his high basketball IQ and hustler’s mentality into significant playing time in first year head coach Billy Kennedy’s system. Kennedy said that Alexander’s time spent studying on the sidelines lit a fire inside him to make an impact on the court at all times — in games as well as practices. “He’s just brought great energy to practice and on the defensive end,” Kennedy said. “He’s matured a lot the last couple of weeks. It’s been a big lift to us as a team.” Alexander’s emergence has coincided with the Aggies most memorable victories this year. In his first significant opportunity, 22 minutes of playing time against Oklahoma State on Jan. 28, he connected on five of six shots for 11 points and six rebounds, helping the Aggies earn a much-needed win.

thebattalion His contributions earned him Kennedy’s trust, as the coach granted Alexander 35 minutes of court time in Wednesday’s tense thriller against No. 6 Baylor. The 6-foot 8-inch freshman shot 4-for-7 from behind the arc and helped the Aggies win the second half 35-27 with nine points and five rebounds in the second period. “He’s really a good shooter,” Kennedy said. A&M’s on-court success this season has often been generated by bench contributors like Alexander, junior forward Ray Turner, and senior guard Alex Baird. “We’ve all known that guys like Daniel can do it,” said David Loubeau, senior forward and agricultural leadership and development major. “He’s always ready to step up off the bench and vie

and bring energy and toughness to the team. All of our guys are ready to step in there and play some good quality minutes to help us win.” Another word from the same root as “disciple” is “discipline” — a trait that Alexander has learned full well over the last two years. He said that being disciplined has fully prepared him for any situation, whether he’s seeing the court or encouraging teammates on the bench. “It’s been a blessing to get an opportunity that I didn’t think I was going to see,” Alexander said. “Going from the first half of the year barely playing at all and not even getting to go in some games to now, when I’m getting an opportunity to play a little more — that’s just awesome and I’m trying to make the most of it.”

past several weeks. “There has been an increased number of people getting the vaccination compared to last year,” Aguirre said. “Any incoming students, international student, transfers or freshmen, those who enrolled for the first time at A&M for this spring semester, have to get it. If you were already enrolled before this spring, you don’t have to get it.” Aguirre said students who do not receive the vaccination risk being involuntarily withdrawn from classes. The Department of Admissions is responsible for keeping track of which students have completed the new requirement. Incoming students were required to provide evidence of vaccination or evidence to decline the vaccination. Students can choose to decline the vaccination for religious purposes or if a doctor provided proof that the vaccination would be injurious to the student’s health. The Admissions

office used registration holds to encourage compliance with the law. “Most schools chose to restrict registration as a means of enforcing the new law, as we did,” said Michelle Walker, assistant director for the Office of Admissions. “By doing so, we do not have any students attending classes that are not in compliance with the legislation.” In order to fulfill the requirement, students can visit the Beutel Health Center, which provides the vaccinations for $110. For students who have insurance through A&M, the vaccination is not covered because preventative care is not included in the insurance policy. Ali Papatonis, sophomore sports management major, said the lack of coverage is not fair to students. “If A&M isn’t going to pay for it, then they should not make students have to get it, because that’s just unfair if they’re not going to provide for the students that are covered by their insurance,” Papatonis said. “Why wouldn’t they provide the shot if it’s a

According to Ashlea Sigman, media coordinator for St. Joseph Health System, the cost of the vaccine at the clinics ranges from $106 to $128, but these prices do not take into account insurance or financial assistance. Despite frustrations with the concern of insurance, Papatonis said students should be motivated to receive the vaccination after the death of friend and economic major Nicolis Williams. In February 2011, he contracted and later died as a result of bacterial meningitis. “I think there was a realization that ‘Wow, it really can happen to somebody that you know,’” Papatonis said.

shooting percentage defense. Injuries have been none too kind to the Aggies as three starters — senior point guard Dash Harris, junior forward Khris Middleton and sophomore forward Kourtney Roberson — have been sidelined for extended periods and will likely miss Monday’s game. The Aggies have found help in unexpected places, though, with the latest being junior guard Naji Hibbert’s career-high 14 points against Kansas State. A&M’s bench, another contributor, has averaged 16.6 points per game in the last seven games, including a 31-point effort against Oklahoma State at home. By comparison, the Aggies averaged nine points off the bench in their first three conference losses, including the road loss to the Longhorns. The Longhorns average 10 points per game more than the Aggies, at 74, and have a shooting percentage of 44 percent — dead equal with A&M. Aside from Brown, Texas receives production from its youth. Two Longhorn freshmen, guards Sheldon McClellan and Myck Kobongo, are scoring 10.9 and 9.8 points per game, respectively. One veteran, Texas senior forward Clint Chapman, is averaging a team-leading 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. When asked in the Jan. 30 press conference wheth-
