texas Governor reviews law Texas is close to enacting a law that would provide teachers with detailed information about the criminal histories of their students. The legislation, is adding to a national debate over whether teacher safety should outweigh the rights of young offenders, who traditionally have moved through the juvenile justice system with their privacy protected. A spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Perry said the governor is reviewing the measure before deciding whether to sign it. Associated Press

Texas A&M’s players pile up and celebrate their 11-2 Super Regional victory against Florida State Monday night in Tallahassee, Fla.

Aggies win trip to college world series Sean Lester The Battalion For the first time since 1999, and the fifth time in school history, the Texas A&M Aggies are going to the College World Series, following a 11-2 defeat of the Florida State Seminoles Monday to end the Tallahassee Super Regional. The Aggies sent sophomore Michael Wacha to the mound in hopes of advancing to the World Series in Omaha, Neb. After Wacha opened the game without allowing a run in the first inning, the Texas A&M offense erupted. The Aggies loaded the bases as the first three batters reached safely. Junior Jacob House walked to put the Aggies up 1-0. With no outs and the bases still loaded Florida State was forced to pull starting pitcher Hunter Scantling out of

the game after facing just four batters. Senior Kevin Gonzalez, the lone Aggie with College World Series experience, would hit a two RBI double to put A&M on top 3-0 and the inning would not end until the Aggies had batted around and taken a 6-0 lead. From that moment on it was all Wacha, all the time. He would pitch seven and a third innings for the Aggies allowing lone runs in the third and sixth inning, ending any hopes of a Seminole comeback. The Aggies would add two insurance runs in the second inning for Wacha who finished with eight strikeouts, pitching the Aggies all the way to Nebraska. After two more insurance runs to make the game 11-2 in the seventh inning, A&M would hit cruise control simply trying not to give up such a large lead. It was just a matter

Next step ◗ The Aggies will play fourth seeded and defending national champion South Carolina in the opening round of the College World Series June 19 at 6 p.m. at Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park. The opener will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Super Regional-coaster: starts high, drops low, ends with ticket to Omaha ◗ A&M upset Florida State in Saturday’s game 1 of the Super Regional 6-2 and overcame Seminoles ace pitcher Sean Gilmartin (12-1, 1.83 ERA).

◗ Game 2 shifted to an offensive showcase by Florida State, as the Aggies surrendered 23 runs and allowed 12 walks in a rout.

◗ In a complete turnaround from Sunday night, the Aggies drove in 11 runs, while the Seminoles could muster only 4 hits and 2 runs.

O’Dell Harmon The Battalion Howdy is one word people will hear a lot in Aggieland. Texas A&M has many proud traditions that continue on from generation to generation from the old time century tree to younger ones like pond hopping, but only one is the signature greeting of the Aggies. Howdy. Students and faculty alike use howdy to simply say hi or an attention getter to quiet down a room. This tradition has made us what most consider a very welcoming place. “I think howdy is what makes A&M one of the friendliest campuses in the world and it is part of our spirit,” Senior Taryn Tipton, chair of traditions council, said. The origin of howdy is a mystery because no one knows offi-

cially when and how it began. “We have been in Cushing library gathering all these papers but there is nothing that says how howdy officially got started,” Tipton said. “In 1951 it was written in the Battalion that howdy is something that Aggies pride as part of their spirit, so its been around for a long time. It is said that since A&M was a school that was full of country boys and farmers howdy kind of started from that and there is no official date or time from when that started.” Since at least 1951 howdy has distinguished Texas A&M from other universities in the world and given students a way to tell when they are among friends. “I say howdy more in emails or online, it gives people an idea where I’m from.” Junior Katlyn

of time before the team could storm out of the dugout as the Aggies brought on senior Nick Fleece to close out the game. Fleece would get the final Seminole batter to ground out to second ending the game and signaling for the bench clearing dog pile that ensued on the mound. As the Aggies celebrated, head coach Rob Childress got a tear

in his eye looking to the crowd for his family. It will be Childress’ first College World Series since 2005 when he was an assistant head coach with Nebraska. “I am proud for our coaches, our players, our university, our community that we were able to win this Super Regional and we are moving on to Omaha,” Childress said. “Very proud for everyone that is involved in our athletic department, our baseball program and our community.”

technology Comcast to announce Skype for home TVs Comcast subscribers: In the future, believing that the TV is talking to you might not be a sign of insanity. You may be getting a Skype video call. Comcast Corp., the country’s largest cable company, is set to announce Tuesday that it plans to bring Skype calls to TV sets later this year. Subscribers will then be able to rent

a kit from Comcast that includes a webcam and an adapter that plugs into the TV. A new cable box remote will include a keyboard on the back, for typing chat messages. Philadelphia-based Comcast hasn’t yet figured out what to charge for the kit, according to Catherine Avgiris, general manager of communications and data services.

Financial terms of the partnership between Comcast and Skype were not disclosed. Comcast wouldn’t say whether Skype would get some of what Comcast charges for the kit. Subscribers will get notifications of their incoming calls on their TVs and will be able to answer calls with full-screen video or in a window while

watching TV. Comcast plans to start trials of the system in the next few months. It has 17.4 million Internet subscribers. “We’ve seen an explosion, already, in the use of Skype in the living room,” said Neil Stevens, general manager of consumer services at Skype. Associated Press

From Gabe Thornton, class of 2003

I write on behalf of the eerily silent group of recent graduates from public universities in the State of Texas regarding the “Seven Breakthroughs of Higher Education Reform.” These “recommendations” intended to better equip graduates to enter today’s workforce will damage the quality of learning in our schools in the short term, and erode the foundation of creative thinking in Texas over the long term.

Brady Grimes: Student Organic Farm grows great local grub

rganic and local foods have grown in popularity in recent years and students have found themselves questioning where and how their food was produced. It is becoming apparent that the industrial food system has left us with limited choices and flavorless produce, most traveling over 1200 miles from farm to plate. This disconnect with our food has caused many young people to rise up with shovels in hand and experience farming for themselves. In the fall of 2009, motivated to learn more about sustainable agriculture and local food production, students initiated a project aimed at giving all Aggies the opportunity to get back to the land and get their hands dirty. The students reached out to University Dining with the ambition to get produce grown on campus, by students, on the plates of the campus dining halls. As the project grew the following season the students branched into

voices

other markets, starting a Community Supported Agriculture, and a farmer’s market stand to find more ways to get seasonal produce in the hands of students. Three seasons later, with support from the Aggie Green Fund, the Sustainable Student Agriculture Association and the Texas A&M Student Organic Farm was born. Both are still committed to the goals of providing organic, local produce for the campus and community, while at the same time providing experiential education opportunities for any students interested in organic farming. Students from across campus have joined in on the farm work through various roles. Most students have taken part in crop production, but there are also op-

portunities to learn about marketing, field research, event planning and agrarianism. Student farm volunteers have come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, with most having little or prior knowledge of food production. These volunteers have left sweaty and satisfied with produce in hand for their efforts. The other way for students to experience the Texas A&M Student Organic Farm is through eating. The student farm has been working with University Dining and the campus dining halls to find ways to increase the amount of local food served on campus. Last year Sbisa Dining Hall served over 1300 pounds of produce grown at the student farm. This year that figure should increase significantly. The student farm is also establishing an on-campus CSA, which will provide a weekly share of the student farm’s harvest to students, faculty and staff interested in being CSA members. Students can also

find student farm produce this fall at the on-campus student farmers’ market. The Texas A&M Student Organic Farm will be expanding this summer. We are looking at getting an organic certification for a plot of University land, incorporating organic research projects to help organic growers nationwide, and getting more student-grown, nutrient dense foods in the hands of students. But, the farm is still a student-driven initiative. The invitation is open for you to join in on the fun and experience for yourself how deeply satisfying it is to connect with your food. The first SASA and Texas A&M Student Organic Farm meeting will be Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m. in room 112 of the Horticulture/ Forest Science building on west campus. Brady Grimes is a senior renewable natural resources major, President of the SASA and farm manager

I can recollect courses taught by teachers who captivated large auditoriums of students not by their challenging curriculum, but with their funny anecdotes interspersed by not so subtle clues to test questions. The “breakthroughs” would deem these teachers successful, efficient educators. Conversely, I had professors who taught small classes and challenged students with in-class dialogue related to their research, while administering strenuous tests. I loathed those classes at the time, however they equipped me for success. Unfortunately, these “breakthroughs” would have scored these professors poorly. My peers and I will either control the purse strings of corporations that fund University research or we may choose to enter academia to pursue creative thought and teach. These myopic, bottom-line focused ideas will stunt powerful research projects and grants will dry up. They will discourage hungry minds from pursuing doctoral work and teaching positions, eroding the quality of undergraduate education. Both outcomes will have long-term negative impacts on our state’s competitiveness for quality students and educators. I speak for my fellow graduates of Texas public universities when I say, “If they aren’t broke, please don’t fix them.”

Bachmann enters race Michele Bachmann, an outspoken Republican with close ties to the tea party, announced Monday that she is running for president, a candidacy that could further shake up a volatile fight for the GOP nomination. The first female contender to enter the 2012 race, Bachmann announced her bid during a Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire. The third-term Minnesota congresswoman has been leaning heavily toward a run over the past few months, visiting early primary states, raising money and railing against President Barack Obama. “Our country needs a leader who understands the

hardships that people across America have been facing over the past few years, and who will do what it takes to renew the American dream. We must become a strong and proud America again, and I see clearly a better path to a brighter future,” Bachmann said in a statement issued through her new campaign. She brings high energy, charisma and proven fundraising ability to the Republican race to nominate a challenger to Obama. She also is known for unyielding stances, biting commentary and highprofile gaffes. Associated Press

Students keeping the tradition of howdy alive as they walk around the Academic Plaza spreading Aggie spirit.

Howdy Continued from page 4

Rosenbaum, a biomedical sciences major, said. “The other day I had to introduce myself to my online class. You could definitely tell who was an Aggie and who wasn’t. We all started our introductions with howdy.” No matter how much or how little people say it, there is a connection people share when they greet another with howdy. “I’m not sure if I know what howdy means to me. I guess you could say it’s just a friendly way to start a conversation. I know it always makes me feel a bit better if someone says howdy to me on campus.” Rosenbaum said. “Although I don’t use howdy very often, it is a phrase that holds Aggies together.” Lane Fobbs, senior

communication major, said. “Howdy can help you locate Aggies no matter what part of the country you may be in, howdy means friendship. It means no matter what color, creed or economic background you are from, we are the Aggies the Aggies are we” Even after Aggies leave Texas A&M, howdy can be used in the business world. “A howdy from a new coworker may break the ice at a job.” Fobbs said. Showing you come from a long line of tradition and values that the Aggies are known for.” Here at Texas A&M whether you’re a student, staff or friend, we welcome all with howdy and a smile. “I use howdy pretty often,” Tipton said. “I am a big fan of traditions. I say howdy pretty much everyday.”
