texas District map changes The Republicancontrolled Texas Senate approved a new congressional district map for the state Monday and sent it to Gov. Rick Perry for his approval. The map was drawn to reflect population changes and increases during the past 10 years as measured by last year’s Census, but also with the goal of protecting and possibly expanding the GOP’s 23-9 majority in Texas’ delegation in Washington. The new map adds four seats to reflect population growth. More than 87 percent of the state’s growth has been among minorities, and activists have called for more representation for those groups.

nation &world Portland flushes water Call it the big flush. Because a 21-year-old man was caught on a security camera urinating into a city reservoir, Oregon’s biggest city is sending 8 million gallons of treated drinking water down the drain. Portland officials defended the decision Monday, saying they didn’t want to send city residents water laced, however infinitesimally, with urine. Some people in the city, in the suburbs and around the world called the flush an overreaction, especially since animals such as ducks contribute waste routinely and, sometimes, die in the water. The Battalion Texas wildfires spread across Brazos and Grimes counties starting Sunday. Approximately 1,800 homes in Grimes County have been evacuated with Navasota high school serving as a shelter. The America Red Cross shelter in Navasota will be accepting all forms of donations from water to toys Jessica Debalski, Assistant Director of the American Red Cross Greater Houston chapter, said. The shelter is expecting more than a 1,000 evacuees and will be looking for people willing to volunteer. The Bryan/College Station area has had record-breaking temperatures this summer and now faces the threat of wildfires. Texas Forest Service spokesman Justice Jones says a Grimes County judge ordered residents to leave late Monday afternoon as the ongoing fire jumped a containment area, as reported by the Associated Press. At least 30 homes have been destroyed so far in the path of the 3,600-acre fire. Helicopters have been dropping retardant to help control the flame. More than 20 fire departments have been working to help quell the flame. “Out of the 254 counties in the state 211 have issued burn bans.” Bart Humphreys, Public Information Officer for Fire department, said. “There have been no local area firefighters injured, but there have been 2 firefighter fatalities in the state this year associated with wild land fires.” College Station is currently under a burn ban. “The burn ban is actually issued by the county commissioner court. It has been in effect for several months.” Humphreys said. “Whenever they issue a burn ban it’s always for 90 days or until the comSee Fires on page 3

he journey started May 21 in Austin, when the Aggies bounced back from two straight losses to beat the Longhorns 3-0 and claim a share of the Big 12 regular season title. A week later, they botched their first opportunity to close out Arizona in the College Station regional, forcing a final game in which they eventually beat the Wildcats by another 3-0 tally. Then, in the following week’s Super Regional in Tallahassee, they recovered from a 23-9 massacre (henceforth known as “Bloody Sunday”) to pound the Florida State Seminoles 11-2 in Monday’s reprise to punch their ticket to Omaha for the first time since 1999. I realize those are a bunch of numbers to most of you, so let me clarify my point: this is a team that rebounds. After the Longhorn loss on May 20, junior pitcher Ross

Natalee Blanchat The Battalion Students who are looking to take a break from classes this summer but want to keep building their resume during the summer months can always turn to volunteering as a way to great way to stay productive and help out the community. There are a variety of diverse organizations in the Brazos county area that cater to every type of individuals or group interests such as the Brazos County Animal Shelter, the Brazos County Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and the Family Promise of Bryan-College Station to name a few. Jay Socol, the Director of Public Communications for the City of College Station, recommends citizens who are interested in volunteering to apply to city boards, committees and commissions in order to help serve the community. “All of these volunteer programs help the city move forward,” Socol said. “The boards, committees, and commissions make recommendations to the city council so that they can make the right decisions, and make sure College Station is moving in the right direction.” Socol said individuals with a more

cats for five hits and zero runs. Then there was the final versus Florida State, ranked fifth in the nation, a game in which Wacha allowed only three hits and the Aggie bats awoke to the tune of 11 base knocks of their own. On paper, there’s no reason why this Texas A&M team should be in Omaha. Their Friday night starter all season long, junior All-American John Stilson, recently tore his labrum and won’t touch a baseball for a long time. Junior Adam Smith, batting at a .244 clip that’s actually an improvement on his numbers from earlier this season. And let’s not even mention the revolving door at second base. That’s what makes this trip to Omaha the sweetest postseason venture yet. The Aggies were the only away team to make it out of the Super Regional; in other words, they stole the spot that everyone fully expected the bigger, faster Florida State team to occupy. “It’s the greatest feeling in the world, as a coach or as a player, to get to go to Omaha, Childress said in the World Series’ opening press conference last Wednesday. “That’s what every team fights for and that’s every team’s goal when you start your season. Now there are only eight teams left playing. It’s like I told our players, it’s something that will bind them together for a lifetime. It’s something you’ll talk about, that the 2011 team got the opportunity to go to Omaha and the memories that you’ll make there. We need to go up there and play well like we

thebattalion 06.21.2011

have the last four weeks, but this is something that you also need to go up there and enjoy. You don’t need to go up there and let it spin out of control on you. This is special and it’s something you’ll always come back to Texas A&M and remember and you’ll talk about it for the next 40 years. But while we’re going up there, we’re going up to win.â€? I thought about Childress’ last sentence as I watched the Aggies face off on Sunday night against South Carolina, the tournament’s reigning champs. As our boys raced off to a 4-0 lead, it was as if Chilly’s comments had been spoken into existence. Then I thought about the last week, the last month, this entire season, and remembered, “Wait a second‌ This shouldn’t be coming so easily. This isn’t the way things are supposed happen.â€? And then, like clockwork, Stripling balks to bring in a run, and second baseman Andrew Collazo overthrows the first baseman to allow two more. “That’s more like it,â€? I thought. Eventually the Gamecocks closed things out in the bottom of the ninth in dramatic fashion. Bases loaded, ball just over the fielder’s outstretched glove, the whole shebang. And you know what? It felt right. This is a resilient bunch. They play best with their backs against the wall. And they may give you a heart attack, but you’ll have a hell of a time waiting for the outcome. So let’s hear it for “The Cardiac Kidsâ€?—and watch them BTHO Cal on Tuesday afternoon. Austin Meek, senior creative writing major and baseball writer for The Battalion

narrow range of interests are encouraged to contact the City of College Station Human Resources Department so that they can be placed in programs geared towards specific volunteer opportunities. One student, Christine Spencer, a senior nutritional science major, heard about the food bank through her classes and charity events including One Love Hunger. Spencer, who has been volunteering at the food bank for six months, said her interest sparked after hearing a program coordinator talk about the backpack program. “I think it makes you realize that most people don’t associate hunger with the College Station/Bryan area, and it makes you realize the need of the community and it makes you realize how prevalent child hunger is or how complicated the process is,” Spencer said. “It’s not just about donating food, it’s the way the food is packaged and how it is stored. It’s really interesting experience and it’s a good way to help out the community.” According to Theresa Mangapora, the Executive Director for the Brazos Valley Food Bank, the organization

distributes 3.8 Million pounds of food from the warehouse to over 45,000 hungry people annually. The biggest programs the bank needs help with are sacking food and assembling the backpacks—something that provides seniors, children and families with 16 items worth of nutritionally evaluated food. “What’s cool about a food bank is that anyone can help; you can get a can of food and donate it from your own pantry,” Mangapora said. “Our food assembly coordinator will work with kids as young as three years old to help their moms assemble backpacks for other kids—something that is really empowering.” Jason Galindo, the food assembly coordinator for the Food Bank, said that he has been trying to recruit volunteers from Facebook and anyone is welcome to apply. Volunteers work on assembling backpack bags, sorting food, and putting together family boxes which are distributed via mobile pantries. “We do need the help but a lot of people come back to volunteer because they enjoy the work because it’s fun to do,” Galindo said. “Plus, it looks great on a resume.”

last thing we want to do is burn down the entire campus or the entire city of College Station,” Don Dickenson, The Lions Club head of planning committee, said. Families are still encouraged to come out to the library on July 4 because the Lion’s club will now be putting on a laser light show. “We respect the decision that was made by the fire Marshall and the Brazos county judge.” Dickerson said. “So we have sought out an alterative, which is a laser light show display that will be replacing the firework display”

Texas couldn’t fight off elimination this time, not with a second straight shaky performance by its starting pitcher and an offense that wilted in the heat and humidity at the College World Series. Cole Green lasted just two-plus innings and the Longhorns managed only four singles Monday in a 3-0 elimination-game loss to North Carolina. Freshman left-hander Kent Emanuel pitched the first complete-game shutout in five years, sending the Longhorns (49-19) out of the CWS in two games for only the second time in 25 appearances since 1966. “We didn’t come here to be the first team to leave,” shortstop Brandon Loy said. “You’re never going to be satisfied, I don’t think, unless you come out here with a national championship. We did some amazing things with this team. It’s tough to leave now.” The Longhorns had been 8-1 in elimination games since the Big 12 tournament, but Emanuel was too much for them to overcome. Texas went three-up, three-down in 11 of 18 innings against Florida and North Carolina. “We did get outplayed twice. That really is the bottom line,” coach Augie Garrido said. “I, for one, am proud of the leadership on this team, and I’m not just throwing that around. They took a team that was pretty scattered at the beginning of the year and pulled it together and kept it functioning like one, so that we had the opportunity to come here.” The Longhorns came to Omaha well-armed, but ace Taylor Jungmann gave them only 4 1-3 innings in the 8-4 loss to Florida and Monday’s starter Cole Green got hit hard and lasted just twoplus innings. Green (8-4) matched his shortest start of the season after having gone at least five innings in each of his 12 starts dating to March 27. Associated Press
