hhhh. Do you hear that? Tick, tick, tick. That ticking noise you hear isn’t a bomb, or the count down to the end of class, it’s your internal clock telling you that it’s about time to go to bed. The sun is setting and you’re confusing your tiredness for classroom boredom. Maybe after this class you’ll slam a couple of energy drinks to get you through tonight’s homework.

nation &world Legalized gay marriage NEW YORK — One of the world’s oldest and largest gay pride parades turned into a carnivallike celebration of same-sex marriage Sunday as hundreds of thousands of revelers rejoiced at New York’s new law giving gay couples the same marital rights as everyone else. This year, the revelry went beyond floats, music and dancing. It included wedding plans.“We’ve been waiting to get married in Central Park for years, and now we got here just in time for history to be made,” said Bryce Croft of Kettering, Ohio, who attended the parade with her partner, Stephanie Croft. Perhaps you should listen to your biological clock when it kicks you awake in the morning and powers you down in the evening. There’s science that suggests your clock is linked to your metabolic efficiency. The Battalion A&M’s track and field excellence was on display this weekend as several Aggies competed in the USA Championships and the Jamaican Championships. The Aggie performances in the USA Track & Field Championships in Oregon were highlighted by Jessica Beard’s, class of 2011 fourth place finish in the 400. Beard posted a 51.06 behind winner and defending 200 champ Allyson Felix for her best outdoor time of 2011. “I said I wanted to make the team and I missed it by one spot for the 400,” Beard said. “At least I’m still part of the relay pool. Hopefully, next year I’ll be in the top three so I can make the Olympic team in the 400.” Other A&M successes came as Jeneba Tarmoh placed third in the 200 with a career best time 22.28 seconds, earning her a trip to this summer’s IAAF World Championships. sleep and wake schedule is very important as a student and important to maintaining our biological clock function,” said Jeffrey Burkeen, a third year medical student at The Texas A&M Health Science Center and former master’s student in Zoran’s lab. “Our biological clock helps regulate hormone release at the appropriate time of day so that when the morning comes, certain hormones are released to help our body prepare for the activities that lie ahead for the day. Without proper sleep each night, our biological clock may shift its activities to function at inappropriate times and as a result, a student’s performance may suffer.” The basis for their research lies in the circadian rhythm, commonly known as the biological clock. This rhythm is an internal process that encompasses biochemical, physiological and behavioral processes over a 24-hour period. It is present in all living organisms from bacteria to humans. “Several labs around the world have been interested in this topic for some time and a link between the clock and metabolism has been shown in several ways. Sleep research in humans and animals see altered metabolisms during sleep-deprivation. A key study in this field was published in Science Magazine in
2005, [by] Joe Bass, Fred Turek, Joe Takahashi,” Zoran said. To learn more “Our studies came about by serendipity. son lagoon in Bee Creek Park is an option. The park has the only small water park in College Station that has waterslides, a pool with a diving board and water basketball. Josh Vasquez, senior community development major, said one of his favorite areas in the B-CS is Lake Bryan. “I took a mountain biking class last semester where we would go up to Lake Bryan and after that I started going out there every other weekend Vasquez said. “It’s really nice. The trails are really well kept up and easy rides for people starting but the trails also got parts for more experienced riders. Vasquez said that even if students aren’t interested in the trails, an entire day can be spent at Lake Bryan barbequing or bringing lawn chairs and sitting near the water spending time with family and friends. Duncan Price, a senior psychology major, said among places to hang out and relax in College Station, there are also many opportunities to have fun while giving back. “[In the summer] you can start up a weekly
game night with your friends in town or join the sailing club and for 60 dollars, they teach you how to sail and let you sail anytime you want. But also volunteer Price said. “While the students are gone, there are still people in need in the community. Food banks, animal shelters, hospitals, and other businesses have plenty of volunteer openings in the summer. You can volunteer with friends and make a memorable experience out of contributing your time to help. Downtown Bryan is home to a variety of restaurants and shops that cater to people of all interests. Upcoming events are listed on the downtown Bryan website. Weekly activities including singer and songwriter night and salsa lessons at the Village are among other popular activities. The annual Fourth of July celebration at Heritage Park in Bryan is an event many people look forward to. The all-day celebration is free to the public and includes a parade. Senior philosophy major Moses Kidd said he likes to try new places in downtown Bryan with his friends and it never seems to disappoint. He said he particularly enjoys the Mexican restaurants and different bands that come perform in the area. “I know for a fact that Bryan is great for eclectic people who want experiences in live music, art, and good food Kidd said.

“What did surprise me though was when I was coming down the straightaway and I could hear them say my name over the loud speaker, Tarmoh said. “I thought, ‘oh my God, I need to keep running.’ That was the most surprising factor. Everything else just kind of fell into place for me. Three Aggies competed in the USA Junior Championships as freshmen Ashley Collier and Prezel Hardy Jr. competed in their respective finals of the 100 and 200, and sophomore Sam Humphreys finished 13 in the javelin. Collier posted an 11.43 in the women’s 100 for fourth place behind the winning time of 11.12 by Central Florida’s Aurieyall Scott. Collier repeated a fourth place finish in the 200 final with a 23.54, to place her in the relay pool of the women’s 4 x 100 relay for the Pan Am Juniors. Hardy Jr. placed fifth in the men’s 100 final with a 10.31 behind Marvin Bracy’s winning time of 10.05. Hardy Jr. followed up the performance with a 20.65 runner-up finish in the 200, just a hair behind winner Sean McLean’s 20.64. “I didn’t have the performance I would have liked in the 100 when I placed fifth, Hardy said. “My only focus today was my last race of the weekend, so I had to give it all I

Jessica Beard will be part of the 4 x 400 relay pool at the the IAAF World Championships starting August 27. had. I set a personal best and I’m very happy. Hardy Jr. was also pleased to know that his performance earned him a spot in the Pan Am Juniors for the United States. “To be able to represent my country is a great feeling, said Hardy, who won the World Youth 100 title in 2009. “It’s been an outstanding year for me. I’ve set personal best times in the 60, 100 and 200. Jamaica held the National Senior Championships where Aggie senior Julian Reid finished runner-up in the long jump with a 26-6.25, his best jump ever. Clora Willams, A&M’s 2006 NCAA champ in the 400, took third in the 800 final clocking at 2:04.20.
