Allison Linder The Battalion U.S. President Barack Obama signed legislation on Friday that will give college students a little more time to breath. The Surface Transportation Bill states that it will maintain jobs on transportation projects while it prevents interest rate increases on new loans to millions of college students. “[Let’s] make sure that we are keeping folks on the job and we’re keeping our students in school,” Obama said. The bill was derived from efforts by Obama, who for the last few months has wrestled with Congress in order to appropriate funds that would prevent an increase in interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans for students. “This increase would have been tough because I take out student loans and will be paying them off after college. Fortunately, the rate got frozen for another year, so I hope congress is able to work out a long term solution within the next year before that issue comes up again,” said John Claybrook, student body president and finance major. The interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans taken out as of July 1, was said to remain at 3.4 percent for one more year. This was an 11th-hour congressional decision reached after the interest rate, which was set by lawmakers to double to 6.8 percent this year, became a rising political issue. “This decision is going to be a benefit to the country and the government in the long term See Loans on page 4

Aaron Deering The Battalion Two men allegedly accosted two Texas A&M University students within half an hour of each other on Saturday. According to the Texas A&M University Police Department, on Saturday night, officers responded to a call after 11 p.m. of a robbery at the Sterling C. Evans Library. The victim reported that while he was sitting at a table outside the library near one of the pillars, he was approached by two young men wearing hoodies, when one of them suddenly grabbed the back of his head and held it down to the table. He then demanded the victim hand over his money, while the other one took close to $100 out of his backpack. The victim also said the suspects were armed with a knife. After taking his money, the victim said they escaped past the Pavilion, toward the liberal arts construction site. The suspects are described as black males, both between 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet, in their late teens to early 20s and wearing either grey or black hoodies. Company supports Olympic athletes Deloitte LLP sponsors U.S. Olympic Committee, Team USA Michael Rodriguez The Battalion As the time comes for athletes to compete on the biggest stage in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics, many will be focusing on the medal counts, how many world records will be broken, and ultimately root for the country of one’s choice. Behind the scenes is a company that does everything it can to provide the sponsorship for the United States Olympic Committee. Being committed to its goals of providing the standard of audit excellence, Deloitte LLP has been a sponsor for the USOC since 2009 and has given the commitment to continue sponsoring Team USA through 2020. “Deloitte shows what a great sponsor they are because of their values: integrity, commitment, diversity and finally their spirit of setting the standard,” said Laura Stoma, graduate student in accounting and Deloitte employee. Deloitte offers audit, tax, consulting and financial advising services to athletes as they prepare to make their way to the Olympics. The services Deloitte offers allow the athletes to train and concentrate on becoming the best at their event without having to worry about budgeting their money for training and travel expenses.

“You wouldn’t believe the gratitude that the athletes show for Deloitte for standing by them every step of the way,” Stoma said. “It’s so cool to see how a sponsorship affects the athletes so much as they prepare to compete. I get athletes coming to me and thanking me for being part of a company that truly puts all of their support and effort to provide the best services for them.” Stoma joined Deloitte and Team USA during the diving Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore. as one of only six interns. While in Eugene, Stoma was able to see firsthand how Deloitte is there for the athletes. She mentioned she met a 16 year old was competing for a spot on the Olympic squad. He knew that it was going to be a long shot, but as he said to Stoma, being able to have a sponsor that was behind him every step of the way with the services, and more importantly the support and care, motivated him to train hard.

Marquavius Burnett: Conference change helps Texas A&M

F

irst, welcome to the Southeastern Conference. I’m sure I speak for the entire league when I say we are happy to have Texas A&M and Missouri join the SEC and become a part of its rich tradition. Like any change, there are pros and cons that come with the move A&M made from the Big 12 to the SEC. But I’ll start with the good news. It’s the SEC, the indisputable best conference in all of college football. The league that boasts the last six, I repeat six, national championships and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Being a part of the SEC will help A&M in many ways. The biggest will be recruiting. Just mentioning that you are a part of the SEC will have high school prospects begging to attend your University. The SEC has become the NFL’s minor league and high-profiled recruits want nothing more than national exposure and an opportunity to play at the next level. It will bring stability to your athletic

program. The Big 12 is a respectable conference, but with teams leaving for other leagues and Texas being the big dog, the SEC gives A&M a place it can call home. Yes, there is a hierarchy with Alabama and LSU being on top, but there is no one who is above the league. When an SEC team plays a non-conference game, fans from other schools band together to cheer each other on and chant S-E-C, S-E-C! The fans are rabid and the atmosphere on Saturday is second to none with tailgating and other pregame rituals. But there is a bit of bad news. The SEC is the best conference in the land, but it is also the toughest to win. Teams have to bring their A-games every week to avoid losing. Every game is taken as a small rivalry,

similar nature. This student was reportedly sitting at a bench outside the Langford Building between buildings B and C, when he noticed two suspects of similar size and dress approaching him, and as they drew near they reportedly covered their faces with ski masks. Then the subject ran toward Ross Street while the suspects fled toward University Drive. These incidents may have some students treading more cautiously but for students like Alexa Morton, sophomore recreation, parks and tourism major, the

this can happen to anyone. “It’s kind of scary, I’ve sat in that exact spot before cramming for a test, it could have happened to me,” Daramsis said. “It just makes me feel more cautious, especially at night.” This was not the only report of the night. About a half an hour later, University Police received a separate call from a student close to 11:30 p.m. of a

so even the bottom dwellers of the league give the Alabamas and LSUs a run for their money. Also, with success comes envy. As you know, the league has won six straight championships and it has the rest of the college football world upset. That frustration boiled over when two teams from the same conference and same division in that conference played for the national championship. The Alabama versus LSU BCS Championship game is arguably the biggest reason college football is getting rid of the BCS in favor of a four-team playoff system in 2014. The league showed its dominance by having two teams face off in the biggest game the sport offers. Now with all that said, A&M has a choice to make. You can be an Ole Miss or a Kentucky of the SEC and consistently finish in the bottom half of the league. You can be Arkansas, a team with a ton of potential that just never finds a way to get past Alabama or LSU. Or you can be Alabama or LSU and compete for a national championship and college football supremacy. The choice is yours. James Sullivan: Aggie football gears up in new threads

he winds of change continue to blow through College Station with unyielding force, creating an unchecked static amongst the vast Aggie network that hasn’t been felt since the forgotten success of the 1980s and 1990s. The slight breeze started to pick up this past December when Texas A&M University hired Kevin Sumlin, former top dog of the Houston Cougars, to take over Mike Sherman’s head coaching duties. On June 30, it grew stronger when University President R. Bowen Loftin introduced Eric Hyman, previously of the University of South Carolina, as the new athletic director following the retirement of Bill Byrne. Just a day later on July 1, the Aggies officially joined their new conference, the SEC, boosting the Texas A&M national brand while further adding to the power of the now monstrous tempest engulfing the program. On Thursday, the Athletic Department will unveil all new football uniforms at 12:12 PM CST, fully forming the beast that has settled upon the University. The age-old tradition that is Aggie uniforms will greet its youngest member, Adidas’ TECHFIT equipment, to the timeless wardrobe that has withstood decades of wear and tear on Kyle Field. The Athletic Department has been releasing snapshots of the uniforms day-by-day starting last Thursday, creating an overall positive buzz from the Aggie community. With many fans fearing an Oregon or Maryland type of uniform faux pas, divisions were formed and sides were taken on the issue. Change seemed to be happening everywhere within A&M and multiple groups were fully opposed toward shifting into a different uniform trend, citing the necessity for tradition at such a time.

Pg. 3-07.10.12.2.indd 1

Fortunately for both factions, though, a conservative yet modern approach seems to have been the goal for A&M’s new gridiron gear. While naysayers will always find their way to voice objections, an overall approving and favorable tone can be gathered from around the Aggie network. However, the uniforms, rumored to be fresh, classy and contemporary, are poised for a much higher purpose than for A&M football studs to look solid on the field. Recruits around the nation are all about exposure, especially in today’s modern information age. Gaining any kind of edge when walking into a young high school athlete’s home is a necessity for up-and-coming programs looking to push their brand. New uniforms that not only have a smooth, timeless look to them, but also prove a program’s forward progression in this age are exactly the type of advantage A&M requires to expand recruiting and work their way into the elite conversation. “We don’t want to lose our tradition, and we don’t want to lose who we are, Sumlin told The Dallas Morning News. “But we also are in an extremely competitive business. And kids pay attention to little things. And recruits do. Tradition matters, but this is a business. And business is booming.

He didn’t qualify for the London games, but he told Stoma he has his sights set on 2016. “It was just so exciting to see this athlete really give it his all and see that his sights are set so straight for making the team,” Stoma said. “He showed a lot of gratitude, gained valuable experience and said he would be back in four years.” Current athletes are involved in a daily routine that involves precision in training, nutrition, rest and treatment. Life becomes a blur when it comes to situations such as finances outside of the competitive scope. Current athletes are glad that Deloitte, sometimes complete strangers to the athletes, will support them every step of the way. “A sponsor like Deloitte comes in [and] allows us to be able to train harder and train faster and be able to support ourselves financially to continue to break records,” USA swimmer Cullen Jones said. “Sponsorship is huge. It can make all the difference from being dead last to finishing at the top podium,” USA Trainer Al Joyner said. Deloitte has agreed to continue sponsoring Team USA through 2020 allowing athletes to have some peace of mind regarding everyday financial issues. Deloitte made one more commitment as Stoma had the intern tag removed and is now signed as a full time employee. “This just shows how much they care for me reaffirming their word of always being behind you all the way,” Stoma said.

because these people are going to be educated, they are going to be leaders in their fields and they are going to work hard and be good citizens,” Claybrook said in regard to Congress’s halt to the increasing of interest on student loan rates. With the signing of the Surface Transportation Bill on Friday, undergraduate students are able to avoid an interest rate that would have doubled beginning July 1 for an estimated 7 million students expected to receive new loans this year. This would have added an extra $1,000 to the average cost of each loan. While addressing the nation Friday, Obama said it was not enough just to keep interest rates from doubling. “I’ve asked Congress to reform and expand the financial aid that’s offered to students. And I’ve been asking them to help us give million Americans the opportunity to learn the skills that businesses in their areas are looking for right now through partnerships between community colleges and em-

Cricket outbreak causes concern for some in area Jason Culak The Battalion Field crickets have been plaguing College Station this summer but their reign is nearing its end. The crickets mating season has driven these insects to come out and their increased numbers could be due to favorable hatching conditions of a warm, wet winter and a moist spring, said Spencer Behmer, associate professor in the Department of Entomology. Students have been noticing the problem all around town. “They are everywhere and it’s disgusting,” said Michelle Erwin, senior special education major. Faculty members echoed this sentiment. “On Thursday I went and took my car up to Garlyn Shelton and there’s a service bay you have to drive underneath between the maintenance place and the auto shop; there were literally thousands of crickets that they were sweeping up,” Behmer said. The average life span of these field crickets is about three to four weeks. Behmer said the adult life cycle is about reproduction, once they lay

Recent warm and moist weather has spawned masses of crickets. The crickets will mate, lay eggs and leave upon maturing. their first few egg batches, they will be on their way out. Crickets are hemimetabolous insects, meaning they are unable to fly until maturity. They have remained in masses for so long because they are unable to relocate, Behmer said. The majority of the crickets flocking to areas have been females. The sex of the cricket can be determined by the presence or lack of a long, stinger-like ovipositor coming off the back of the cricket. This organ is used by females to lay eggs in the ground. Another distinguishing factor between males and females in crickets is chirp-

ing. The females do not chirp only the males do. The males chirp to look for mates. While they are still here, Rebecca Clark, postdoctoral research associate for the Department of Entomology, gave some advice on keeping the crickets away. “We know that at night they are attracted to lights,” Clark said. To keep the crickets away one can either turn off outside lights around your house or replace them with bug lights, which are yellow in color, she said. These lights can be found at most hardware stores.

Tisdale’s first fish buddies. “When we finally had the privilege to wear normal people clothes… Roy would choose to wear his green Vietnam fatigues… That was our Roy Tisdale.” Ruth then spoke of Tisdale’s love of building Bonfire. Building four wasn’t enough so he stayed an extra year to build a fifth. Col. Jim Dunham, Tisdale’s D-2 company military adviser, then took the stage to share his memories of Tisdale. From his first fish haircut to his first March-In at Kyle Field, Dunham, as he teared up, said Tisdale will never be forgotten. State senator of District 5, Steve Ogden then presented Tisdale’s wife, Kim, with an American flag flown above the state’s capital in Austin on July 2 in Tisdale’s honor. Hundreds of students and community members gathered outside the church to pay respects to Tisdale and to his

The Westboro Baptist Church sent out a news release July 2 saying it had planned to protest the funeral. Members of Westboro Church did not show up. More than 600 students and community members came out for a silent vigil, also known as the Maroon Wall to protest Westboro’s intentions. Lilly McAlister, junior sociology major and co-organizer of the Maroon Wall, said the group, which spread like wildfire, wanted to support the family. McAlister said the family had a right to grieve privately and the Maroon Wall was there to ensure that happened. Tisdale’s body arrived Wednesday as the Patriot Guard Riders and others stood by the road. Ruth said he asked one woman near the side of the road if she knew Tisdale. She said no, but that Tisdale was a son of Aggieland. “There are no strangers on this road.” Tisdale was buried with full military honors at the Aggie Field of Honor. Hundreds gathered and lined the roads in honor of him. Tisdale, 42, commander of the 525th Brigade Special

Troops Battalion, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was killed by Spc. Ricky Elder, 27 at Fort Bragg, N.C. while conducting a safety briefing. Elder then turned the gun on himself and later died after undergoing treatment at a medical center in Fayetteville, N.C. In a statement, the Army said Elder was recently charged with larceny of a toolkit valued at $1,700 and was awaiting court martial.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Elder’s final Facebook message — time stamped at 2:29 p.m. June 28 as, “My mind in the past couple of years has folded on itself. I just went to the Dr. and they said I just tested positive for Dementia.” Fort Bragg officials said at 3:30 p.m., Elder shot Tisdale. Tisdale is survived by his wife Kim, and two children, Megan and Roy Lane. Tisdale and Kim were married for 19 years, and he proposed to her under the Century Tree.
