The appearance of Batman has changed multiple times since Bruce Wayne made his debut in DC Comics No.1 in 1939. The five evolutionary representations of Batman above, from left to right, are likenesses of the caped crusader from the following eras: ”Golden Age” (19391950), TV Era (1966-1968), Frank Moore and Alan Miller Comic Era (1986-1988), Animated Series Era (1992-1995) and The Dark Knight Trilogy Era (2005-2012).

Fear is a recurring theme in every Batman story, from the comic books, to the Christopher Nolan trilogy. Bruce Wayne’s alter ego was inspired by fear, and fear is more than prevalent in the newest addition to the Batman saga. “The Dark Knight Rises” is set eight years after the previous film left off, with Gotham City still rallying behind the late Harvey Dent and his crusade against crime, and Batman ostracized by the city for being a cold-hearted thug. Gotham doesn’t need Batman anymore, and Bruce Wayne has been a recluse since Dent’s death eight years prior. Enter the menacing and more than physically intimidating Bane, played by Tom Hardy. He’s no Joker, and he sounds like a cross between Darth Vader, Sean Connery and a really bad asthma attack, but Hardy plays the part. Especially when his ferocity shows in the last minutes of the film. Bane is more than enough to bring Bruce Wayne and Batman back from seclusion, and the best way to describe what happens next is nothing less than nonstop panic and chaos. Watch your back, Batman. Giving any more details about the plot flirts with spoiling the film, but pay attention. There are more than a few plot twists that have become synonymous with Nolan’s name. I caught myself with

my mouth open in shock a few times. The great Michael Caine reprises his role as the wisdom-spouting butler Alfred Pennyworth, Morgan Freeman returns as the calm and collected executive of Wayne Enterprises Lucius Fox, and Gary Oldman returns as Gotham’s finest police commissioner Jim Gordon. New to the Batman films are some familiar faces from Nolan’s previous casts. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the gogetting Gotham cop John Blake, and the gorgeous, wideeyed Marion Cotillard plays Miranda Tate, the philanthropist looking for an investment from Wayne Enterprises. Despite all of these brilliant actors, Anne Hathaway steals the show as the wickedly sexy Selina Kyle. Hatheway “purrs” every line to perfection, and seems to upstage every other actor while she’s on screen. And, she adds a perfect amount of comic relief to such a dark story. What makes this film work is the mood. This is the darkest superhero movie I have ever seen, and I loved it. The story of Batman is not a bedtime story, and Nolan recognized this and produced what may always be the best Batman story ever made. The visuals are astounding as well. The opening sequence involving a mid-air hijacking of a CIA aircraft is a thing of beauty. You will catch yourself getting lost in the visual effects more than once. Maybe it’s because the film was actually shot on good old-fashioned film stock. Thank you Mr. Nolan for not shooting this movie in 3D, by the way. It might be a good idea to re-watch the previous films before seeing “Rises,” as there may or may not be a return of one particularly nasty villain from Batman Begins, and it certainly plays off of the events that wrapped up the last film. Make sure you remember what is going on. “The Dark Knight Rises” was a better conclusion to Nolan’s trilogy than I thought possible. It will bring laughter, it may bring tears, but it will certainly be remembered for many years to come, and hopefully during awards season. The cast and crew deserve it. A word of advice before you see the film: Use the restroom before you sit down. At two hours and 44 minutes, you may find yourself squirming from more than just excitement.

ithout laser vision or the ability to run on water, Batman is left with the resources of his personal fortune to be Gotham’s salvation. But the questionable feasibility of Hollywood technologies found in movies such as the Dark Knight trilogy are a comical fallacy for some student-engineers, however still entertaining as ever.

“Batman is known for having all sorts of gadgets and machines, and I think that contextually [Christopher] Nolan will do a decent job of keeping the sci-fi tech believable enough that it’s not too outlandish,” said Mitch Williams, senior aerospace engineering major. “As long as the line isn’t crossed into the absurdly implausible, I’m fine with it.” Aimed at instilling the same fear he knew since he was a boy, Bruce Wayne characterizes his vigilantism with a bat. Well, what is a bat without its wings? One of the most iconic elements of a superhero is the cape. And Batman, the caped crusader, flies into this category. Or does he fall? “The bat cape is more like a wing suit [or] a squirrel suit,” said aerospace engineering graduate student Michael Belisle. “It allows a controlled descent, but doesn’t really slow you down by much.” In “Batman Begins,” the Applied Sciences Division of Wayne Enterprises provided Batman with a memory fabric technology that turned a nylon-based material rigid

when an electric current was applied. Even if this cape was rigid enough to glide, physicists speculate that Batman would be falling at about 50 mph and would need an additional force to slow the fall. “A wing suit flight still ends by deploying a parachute, unless you’re [stuntman] Gary Connery and land on a runway of cardboard boxes,” Belisle said. If he isn’t gliding by cape, Batman is usually flying in the Batplane, otherwise known as the Batwing. In the third and final movie of director Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Batman will sport one of the more fantastic technologies yet. Aerospace engineering graduate student Robert Brown said his primary concern with the feasibility of the Nolan version of the Batwing is the force required to hover. Outside of Hollywood, engineers have designed and built a functional hovercraft called the Osprey. It looks like an airboat and never completely leaves the ground, at least not like Nolan’s Batwing, which can be seen spinning over a Gotham skyscraper in the second “Dark Knight Rises” trailer. The roughly 17-foot-wide Batwing has two propellers at an estimated 6-foot radius each. Brown said the disc area of such dimensions would support about 3,000 pounds. Compared to the Osprey, which has an

engine for each of its propellers that weigh about 900 pounds apiece, Brown calculated the Batwing would have a little more than 1,000 pounds left over once the propeller engines are accounted for. For the Batwing to fly, the spare 1,000 pounds would be the limit weight for the remaining elements of the craft, including rocket launchers, dual machine guns, flood lights, an EMP cannon, fuel, the Batman himself and, of course, armor. “This is a daunting task, to say the least,” Brown said. Fun fact — the smaller a propeller’s rotors, the faster they must spin to generate the same amount of thrust. Brown said it’s likely the propeller blades on a craft such as the Batwing would have to spin at supersonic speeds to generate enough thrust, causing shockwaves and lowering efficiency — let alone diminishing any stealth capabilities. “I would conclude that without ultralightweight materials or some sort of advanced ‘comic book’ propulsion system not shown on film thus far, the Batwing would never leave the ground,” Brown said. Belisle said he thinks the basic idea of the Batwing is feasible. “Although, it’s doubtful something will ever be that maneuverable in close quarters without causing the pilot to blackout — even if we assume that the Batsuit has anti-g-force capabilities,” he said. Even as a graduate student studying for his doctorate, Belisle said the improbability of Hollywood technologies doesn’t necessarily make a movie less entertaining. “It’s neutral for me. It only has to be 10 percent true, then the rest is imagination,” he said. “I usually avoid pointing out inaccuracies unless I’m in friendly engineering company.”

West Nile Virus reappears on campus, in B-CS area Julie Blanco The Battalion West Nile Virus is officially here. Texas A&M University, College Station and Bryan have tested positive for mosquitoes that carry this virus. For the fourth week in a row, the golf course at Texas A&M has tested positive for mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus. Other sites that have tested positive for the virus include the area around the Jack K. Williams Administration Building, Brison Park and Sue Haswell Park. While there have been 23 human cases of the virus in Texas this year, there have yet to be any in Brazos County. Texas has highest number of reported human cases of West Nile, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nation’s

first West Nile related death this year occurred in Dallas earlier this month. “We usually see mosquito cases first,” said Mark Johnsen, environmental health specialist and medical entomologist at the Brazos County Health Department. “We see most human cases in late July and early August. We haven’t entered the worst part of the season yet.” As summer progresses, more mosquito test pools are testing positive. “Earlier we’d see only one or two cases per week,” Johnsen said. “This week we had eight positive mosquito pool cases. So we’re increasing the amount of West Nile that’s out there.” Although rainy days may serve as a nice break from the hot days of summer, the aftermath is not always beneficial. “Because of all the rain we’ve had,

there’s going to be a lot of standing water for mosquitoes to lay their eggs in,” said Roger Gold, professor in the Department of Entomology. “If the water stands around for just a few days, we’ll complete another generation of mosquitoes. The number is going to increase in these next 10 days.” The life cycles of mosquitoes are very short compared to other insects. They can go from an egg to an adult in less than two weeks. And because of the temperature and the warm water, they can put off a generation continuously. Julie Blanco -- THE BATTALION

Brison Park is one of the locations in College Station that has tested positive for West Nile Virus mosquitoes.

West Nile Continued from page 4

They can survive by feeding on flower nectar. The reason West Nile Virus is spreading is because a vector carries and transfers the disease to a susceptible host. In this case, the vector is the southern house mosquito and humans and horses play the role of host. “West Nile Virus itself is in birds that are infected, in horses and in people,” Gold said. “Depending on where the mosquito takes her blood meal, she’ll pick the virus up, it will go into her gut and it will multiply in the tissues. As she takes another blood meal, she’ll inject that virus into another host. We’re moving a virus of other animals through the mosquito.” In order to solve the problem of West Nile Virus, the vector must to be removed. Presumably, the easiest way to do so would be to spray around the county. But this only kills the adult mosquitoes and the next day there would be a new population of adults. The best way to rid our area of these pests would be to modify their habitat. “We can make it more difficult for the mosquitoes to survive,” Gold said. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in sewer systems, catch basins, ponds, fountains and any place with standing water. Since their flight range is approximately a mile, the Health Department goes to these places where the test pools for mosquitoes have been positive, according to Johnsen. In these areas, the department tries to eliminate the eggs and larvae to prevent them from developing into adults, which

will fly off to spread the virus. The process is called “dunking.” A “dunk” is a pesticide that is put in standing water. It dissolves and kills the larvae. For the rest of the mosquito population, there are ways to protect against their bite. Take some personal protections to stay safe and follow the four D’s, according to Johnsen. Don’t go out during dusk or dawn because those are the peak mosquito biting times of the day. Mosquitoes are too fragile to be out in the hot summer sun. Drain any standing water. Dress wearing long sleeves and long pants. Wear light colored clothing that has a loose fit. This way, even if mosquitoes still try to bite you, they can’t get through to your skin. Wear repellent with DEET. Mosquitoes don’t like the smell of the chemicals in repellent that contain this and will not bite. Mosquitoes are very sensitive to smell. They like the places such as sewers because of the stinky smell. They are also attracted to perfumes, scented soaps and hairspray. “More people are more active during this part of the year,” Johnsen said. “They’re out and about where mosquitoes are, so their chances are higher for getting bit.” This is beginning to concern students who exercise around campus and College Station. “Now that I know that West Nile is around, I need to put on bug spray before I go off for a run since I go around the A&M golf course every day,” senior marketing major Elisa Durel said. “It’s scary because I run in the morning and that’s when the mosquitoes are out.”

Bisbee has been a staple in front of the Biological Sciences Building at the East Entrance for years. A constant joy for students as they walk by to pet him or play with him. But now he’s nowhere to be found. A note left on Bisbee’s information sheet outside the building states that no one has him since July 10. Bisbee is a part of the Aggie Feral Cat Alliance of Texas at Texas A&M University. According to its website, AFCAT is a volunteer organization comprised of students and faculty working closely with the University in order to provide care and longterm management of feral cats on campus. Even though there are many colonies of feral cats near the Physical Plant and Kyle Field, Bisbee is more well known than other feral cats on campus. Though his information sheet reminds people that he is feral and can bite or scratch without warning, most students find he is quite docile and sweet. Students have taken to social media outlets to respond to his disappearance. The support has been outpouring on Bisbee’s Twitter. “We have to find him #OperationFindBisbee,” Maddie Howard tweeted. “Where’d my main man Bisbee go?” Lance Boyd tweeted. They’re also hitting up his Facebook with comments: “Hope we see you again,” Patrick Zeinart wrote. “I heard you are lost,” Suzie Xiaoxi Ou wrote. “Come back home Bisbee.” If you see Bisbee you are encouraged to call either 979-845-6131 or 979-665-8657.
