news for you texas Heat energy crisis AUSTIN — The Texas electric grid managers are appealing to the public again to shut off their lights or any other nonessential consumers of electricity. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas is making the appeal each afternoon this week as record afternoon heat breeds record demand for electricity. ERCOT initiated what it calls Energy Emergency Level 1 at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday after reserve generating capacity for the grid fell below 2,300 megawatts.

Connie Thompson The Battalion Kelli Flanagan, class of 2006, died in a car accident on Jan. 23. To honor her memory, Flanagan’s family set up an endowed Texas A&M University scholarship. The Kelli Marie Flanagan Memorial Scholarship will benefit countless deserving students, said Stephen A. Holditch, head of A&M’s Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering. Holditch also said that Flanagan’s department is honored that her family and friends have chosen to remember her with this perpetual scholarship. “After the first day or two, I thought of doing the scholarship,” said Judy Flanagan, Kelli’s mother. “I called my sister-in-law, who’s an Aggie, and asked her to get it started. Anadarko also asked if they could help.” Kelli came from a family of Aggies that included her sister, aunt, uncle, cousins and grandfather. “She grew up going to Aggie football games and was very loyal to Texas A&M,” Judy said. Kelli graduated with a degree in petroleum engineering and worked on Anadarko’s Petroleum Corp.’s internship recruitment team. Judy said that she believes the endowed scholarship, which will assist Aggie petroleum engineering majors, is a fitting tribute to her daughter because she received a Society of Petroleum Engineers scholarship as an undergraduate. “I want the scholarship to help other students afford college,” Judy said. “I also hope it makes young people aware of the opportunities in petroleum engineering and furthers that industry.”

Coach Kennedy running drills with the 2011 - 2012 Aggie basketball team in preparation of the season.
Men’s team to take on international opponents on 10-day Eurotrip Adrian O’Hanlon III The Battalion In his first attempt to piece together a title contender at Texas A&M, men’s basketball head coach Billy Kennedy tipped off the 2011-2012 season with a two-hour practice in preparation for the team’s upcoming European Tour. The Aggies had a two-hour workout inside the Cox-McFerrin center July 27, the first of 10 practices allowed before the team’s 10-day visit to Switzerland and France starting on Aug. 8. It was the first workout for the Aggies under Kennedy. “We had good energy,” Kennedy said. “It was a lot of fun to finally see these guys that you’ve heard so much about and see what kind of players they are. I liked our intensity, our effort. Our guys really had the right attitude team-wise tonight, being unselfish and being excited to play.” Kennedy said the first workout served to introduce the players to his system and brush up on FIBA rules and regulations before the Aggies depart for their first foreign tour since 2003 when the team visited Italy. Basketball will be played but the trip will mainly serve to build a team atmosphere and acquaint the Aggies to their new head coach’s style and system against teams in-
cluding the Swiss National Team. Kennedy has proven successful as a defensive-minded coach with a half-court offense, compiling a record of 107-53 at Murray State and leading the Racers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Now in his first year at the helm for A&M, Kennedy has the foundation in place with David Loubeau returning for his senior year and Khris Middleton returning as the team’s top-scorer from last season. Middleton may not make the trip with his teammates as he is attempting to make the USA Basketball World University Games Team. Freshmen Jamal Branch, Jordan Green and Grant Jolly had their first taste of Aggie hoops in the workout and will join the rest of the team on the trip. Rounding out A&M’s roster are seniors Dash Harris, Alex Baird and Jarod Jahns, juniors Ray Turner and Naji Hibbert (will wear No. 2 this season), redshirt junior Elston Turner, sophomores Kourtney Roberson and Keith Davis, Blake McDonald (will wear 12) and redshirt freshman Daniel Alexander (will wear 20). The team departs on Monday, Aug. 8 and will also visit Lake Lucerne, Mount Pilatus, the River Seine, the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles.

Aggies sign with NFL teams Adrian O’Hanlon III The Battalion The NFL lockout ended last week allowing teams to talk to and sign free agents. After the first weekend of talks, a list of Aggies have been on the move in the longawaited NFL offseason. Former A&M linebacker Von Miller inked a deal with Denver for four years and $21 million including a $13.773 million signing bonus. Denver agreed to pay Miller the league’s minimum salary of $375,000 in his first year with big pay raises in the following years and added a team option for year five. Miller was the second overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, tying the highest selection in school history, where Hall of Fame quarterback and Broncos chief of football operations John Elway compared him to the late Kansas City pass rusher Derrick Thomas. Fittingly, Miller will wear No. 58 as he enters his rookie season in honor— and in comparison—to the former NFL great. Miller came to College Station with high expectations as a hybrid See Football on page 3

Taylor Wolken: On heated rhetoric and debt ceiling hypocrisy
If you ever need caring, confidential help, there’s always Hope. We’re here for you.
ongresswoman Gabrielle Giffords returned to Washington, D.C. Monday, seven months after her tragic attack to cast her vote in favor of raising the debt ceiling. Her timing couldn’t be better to unveil the absolutely relentless hypocrisy of leftwing media and politics.
979-695-9193
The vicious attack on Giffords sparked a whirlwind of criticism over the violent rhetoric of the right in which the media castigated the tea party for its tone. Sarah Palin was criticized relentlessly over a map depicting crosshairs over vulnerable democrats, similar to the DNC’s use of targets on Republicans. Most heinously, Giffords’ attacker, Jared Loughner, was assumed by the media to be a right-wing nut job aligned with the tea party, of which only the nut job part was true. A favorite of the left, Paul Krugman crooned in The New York Times, “you could see, just by watching the crowds at the McCain-Palin rallies, that it was ready to happen again.” Democrat Senator Richard Durbin opined, “we live in a world of violent images and violent words,” and went on to cite a Sarah Palin tweet, “don’t retreat, reload.” ABC’s Jane Cowan noted, “Political candidates, especially those aligned with the grassroots Tea Party movement, have increasingly invoked violent imagery.” It’s hard to miss the irony when Giffords returned to the house, left-wingers and Democrats who refuse to use the term, “War on Terror,” “terrorist,” or “jihadist,” to describe “enemy combatants,” are using all those terms to describe the tea party congress members and their role in the debt ceiling debate.

Liberals lament the debt-ceiling compromise they think was manipulated by extremist “tea-hadists” though it gained more bipartisan support than Obamacare. Joe Nocera of The New York Times in an article titled, Tea Party’s War on America, complains, “You know what they say: Never negotiate with terrorists. It only encourages them,” and accusing tea party member of having “waged jihad.” Vice President Joe Biden sniped, “The tea party acted like terrorists.” Michael Lind penned an article for Salon titled, “The Tea Party, the debt ceiling, and white Southern extremism” which explains, “Today’s Tea Party movement is merely the latest of a series of attacks on American democracy by the white Southern minority, which for more than two centuries has not hesitated to paralyze, sabotage or, in the case of the Civil War, destroy American democracy in order to get their way.” Let me be clear. I have nothing against heated rhetoric. When Americans talk about passionate issues from sports, to religion, to politics, people are bound to spout off and feelings are going to get hurt. I am however against blatant hypocrisy. It unveils the political opportunism of liberals in the Giffords tragedy where they insisted right-wing rhetoric poisoned the atmosphere regardless of the facts. Now, seven months later, Giffords returned to Congress and there is not even a whisper about civility as these same opportunists call fellow Americans hostage takers and terrorists. It’s fine to believe that liberals are shrill mouth breathers or that tea party jihadists are trying to destroy America. We all have opinions. Just be consistent. Heated rhetoric I can stand, hypocrisy, I cannot. Taylor Wolken is a junior economics major and editor-in-chief of The Battalion.

David Riddle: Dining services provide quality and nutritious meals to students It is the mission of Texas A&M University Dining to serve highquality, nutritious meals to our customers. As such, we appreciate Ms. Ogren’s concerns regarding healthy meal choices on campus and wanted to share what we have been doing to address them. Dining has worked hard the past two years implementing the following, to specifically address food quality and nutrition: We hired a registered dietitian to analyze the foods we offer and implement a nutritional analysis system to provide customers with nutritional information online through the dining website. She also provides nutritional counseling to students with special dietary needs and has provided an Eating Well on Campus Guide at http://dining.tamu.edu/meal_plans/ eating_well_guide.stm. We hired executive chef’s for both our residential dining centers and retail facilities to oversee culinary operations and develop menus. We buy fresh fruits and vegetables from the Texas A&M Holistic Garden’s Student Sustainable Farm to utilize in our dining centers (what the Farm can’t provide, dining purchases from Scarmardo Produce — a local vendor that utilizes organically grown and local sources as an essential part of their product mix). Sbisa Dining Center offers daily vegetarian options through

the ‘food court’ side such as a baked potato bar, salad bar, burrito bar, made-to-order noodle bowls, veggie burgers and hot dogs as well as cheese and vegetarian pizza. Retail locations across campus offer several options such as tacos, burritos and quesadillas made without meat, black bean burgers, baked potatoes, whole grain pastas to be topped with marinara sauce and vegetables and vegetarian sandwich choices. In addition, they offer 19 vegetarian items through our Simply Fresh grab-n-go line which is available at retail locations on campus. New for the fall semester, Sbisa Dining Center will offer a vegetarian line at lunch and dinner to include both vegan and vegetarian dishes. A sampling of these dishes will include: beans and rice, lentil and chick pea stew, eggplant parmigiano and brown rice as well as fresh steamed/cooked vegetables seasoned with herbs (no added salt or fat). The menu will change each day so there is variety. University Dining is currently working to provide complete menu listings for all facilities through dining.tamu.edu, which will help customers, see the wide variety of options available across campus. As always, customers are encouraged to provide input through their representative on the dining advisory counsel (http://dining.tamu.edu/meal_plans/eating_well_ guide.stm) or directly to dining at dining@tamu.edu. David Riddle is the executive director of the Department of University Dining.

KLAMATH, Calif. — Scientists on Wednesday tried to collect gas samples from the blowhole of a 45foot gray whale stranded in the Klamath River in Northern California. The mother gray whale and her 15-foot calf entered the river in late June during their northward journey from breeding ground in Baja California to Alaska. The rescue team spotted what they believed to be the calf swimming to sea on July 23, and scientists said the calf was mature enough to survive its journey to Alaska. Associated Press

linebacker/defensive end and realized his potential early in his career as an Aggie. Miller earned All-America honors as a freshman but became a household name with his All-America performance as a junior, where he led the nation with 17 sacks. His senior season was filled with clutch plays against ranked foes, as he totaled 68 tackles, 10.5 sacks and three forced fumbles en route to the 2010 Butkus Award, given each season to college football’s top linebacker. Former A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson signed a free-agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Johnson was a three-year starter for A&M but will have to battle former Texas quarterback Vince Young for the backup spot behind superstar Michael Vick. The Eagles signed both Johnson and Young in preparation to trade Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals. Johnson was a four-year letterman at A&M and went on to set two Big 12 conference records and 24 school records. He holds the Big 12 record for most pass attempts without throwing an interception, set at 242. Johnson also compiled 8011 career passing yards, 650 completions and 67 touchdowns— all school records—in his career as an Aggie. Johnson was touted as a first- or second-round NFL pick coming into his senior season at A&M, but his stock dropped after being replaced in mid-season. He was then drafted No. 1 overall in the 2011 UFL Draft by the Hartford Colonials. The list of 2011 Aggies joining the NFL continued when defensive lineman Lucas Patterson agreed to a freeagent deal with Kansas City, offensive lineman Matt Allen signed with Tampa Bay and running back Jamie McCoy signed with Pittsburgh. Other Aggies on the move in the NFL include guard Billy Yates signing with Cleveland, defensive tackle Rocky Bernard cut from the Giants and defensive lineman Ty Warren was cut from the Patriots.

film Geek approved Man out of time ◗ Super soldier Steve Rogers is a man 70 years removed from his own time after being frozen at the end of Captain America: First Avenger. With an updated suit and Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. agency behind him, Rogers will be charged with assembling the world’s first team of superheroes.
Ruffalo smash!!! ◗ Mark Ruffalo replaces Edward Norton as the third actor to play Bruce Banner in the last decade. Count 2008’s The Incredible Hulk as part of Marvel’s cinematic timeline.

Hot and deadly
Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon directs Marvel’s The Avengers.
◗ Scarlett Johansson reprises her Iron Man 2
role as Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow. Jared Baxter As the only female Avenger, the multi-talented The Battalion and hard-to-read Romanoff will likely dish out The superheroes of this summer have more wirey, leg-twisting action. come and gone, but next year’s Avengers ensemble looks mightier than ever thanks to well received outings by Captain America and Thor—not to mention Joss Whedon, who sits in the director’s chair. Whedon—loved by comic geeks and Buffy fans alike—must tie it all together in one of the most ambitious experiments in Hollywood history. The pressure hasn’t hurt his dry sense of humor. “This is the second busiest I’ve ever been,” Whedon said to Entertainment Weekly. “I handle it in the way you have to have intense focus and also be behind on everything—and constantly panicking, which I’m really good at.” In a seemingly unprecedented move, Marvel released an abridged ending of Captain America: First Avenger along with an Avengers teaser trailer online this week. It’s not exactly common for a studio to release the ending to one of their biggest summer blockbusters so soon after its release, but considering this is the first time five separate, stand-alone films will ever tie into one, convention has been thrown out. It all started with Iron Man when Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury recruited an unsuspecting Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) into If he be Hems-worthy ... the “Avengers initiative.” And with so many ◗ Aussie Chris Hemsworth adds the wrath of characters to now assemble on-screen at one a thunderous god as the mighty Thor. Expect time, Whedon feels like he’s back working plenty of back and forth banter between him on TV again. “We are almost two-thirds of the way and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). through shooting. We started shooting when I was twelve. It is the longest and most end-
less thing,” Whedon said. “Not unlike doing a season of TV, the movie has so many characters, so many things in it, the movie is so packed it’s like I’m making a TV show every week.” That’s not to say the frequent San Diego Comic Con attendee hasn’t enjoyed himself. Whedon—much like Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston—continues Marvel’s method of hiring out-of-the-box directors whose style and storytelling technique fit their respective superheroes regardless of budget or scale. “Every week I’ll get a tired of set, and then I’ll get to blow it up and move to the next set. I’ve been with this actor and now I can get to move to this actor. It’s very fun and very varied,” Whedon said. Plot details are scarce, but Thor’s main baddie and brother, Loki, looks to play a part along with the all-powerful “cosmic cube” artifact seen in Captain America: First Avenger. Marvel plans to fill in the gaps between each of their films in a series of shorts starring Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), the S.H.I.E.L.D. operative often seen keeping Iron Man in check. The first of these shorts will appear exclusively on Thor’s Blu-ray release next month. The Avengers’ roster features two unfamiliar faces in Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. And How I met Your Mother fans will get to see the legen … wait for it … dary Cobie Smulders as go-to S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Maria Hill. Come next May, Whedon will have either revolutionized the way film franchises are forever approached, or Marvel’s grand scheme will have failed. As Nick Fury says, “gentlemen, you’re up.”
Mr. Narcissism ◗ Iron Man’s post-credit scene started the Avengers initiative, and nearly four years later, Robert Downey Jr. will soar side by side Earth’s mightiest heroes.
Renner takes aim ◗ The Hurt Locker star made a brief appearance in Thor as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Clint Barton. Hawkeye is one of Marvel’s lesser known Avengers amongst moviegoers, but his roster spot is unquestioned.
