Tropical Storm Isaac sprawled over the Florida Keys Sunday evening, and it may strengthen over Gulf waters into a hurricane by the time it makes landfall between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle. The storm was on course to strike land on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the powerful storm that crippled New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Forecasters expected Isaac to pass the Keys late Sunday before turning northwest and striking land as a Category 2 hurricane Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large swath of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. — which includes the New Orleans area — to Destin, Fla. A Category 2 hurricane can sustain winds between 96 and 110 mph. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and suggested that people begin evacuating lowlying parts of the state. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but there remained much uncertainty about its path. Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. The Gulf Coast hasn’t been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region. Florida, meanwhile, has been hurricane-free since it was struck four times each in 2004 and 2005. See Isaac on page 7

We are here to serve you The 2012 fall semester is officially underway with more students stepping onto this historic campus than ever before — about 700 more students than last year’s record breaking fall semester. The thousands of freshmen officially added to the ranks of the Aggie family this week are now part of a new future, and a lot is changing around this University. After being under construction for almost four years, the Memorial Student Center has reopened to its former glory as the campus living room. With the conference change, from the Big 12 to the SEC, A&M stands in the wake of a monumental decision that will forever alter the University, in influence and image.

The Class of 2016 represents a dynamic turning point in the culture of our student body. Students, you are the beginning of a new generation, and there is a weight of responsibility and opportunity upon your shoulders: to steward well the traditions laid before you. Since 1893, The Battalion has been one of the oldest on-campus traditions as the student newspaper of Texas A&M. Independent from the University and ran by students from varied and diverse backgrounds, The Battalion represents the student voice of Texas A&M. We are here to serve students. So, let us help you be a voice — the student voice — to communicate the messages you want to relay.

A&M is also in the workings of adding a medical school and law school under its purview. Some of the changes have also fueled much debate and concern among faculty, staff and students. The outsourcing debate brought protests and a multi-million dollar contract, with details still uncertain. Budget cuts have and continue to impact various campus entities, from faculty retention to student services. And the campus continues to develop with inconvenient construction. The tradition of A&M’s growth and significance has never been the action of one, rather the movement of many. Campus will grow and rivalries may change, but the A&M tradition of value must remain.

Aggies claim victory in home opener despite sluggish start Charity Chambers Special to The Battalion In the first home game of the season, the No. 12 Texas A&M soccer team defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 2-0 Saturday. More than 4,000 fans rallied to Ellis Field and, for seven seniors, the game served as their final home opener. Senior defender Lindsey Witz, a transfer from Cal State Bernardino, made her first start as an Aggie Saturday. Witz said that she was thankful for the opportunity. “It’s a lot more demanding here, I like it,” Witz said. “I’ve come a long way, it just seems like it’s coming all

together and I get a chance to prove that I can play with these girls.” As the Aggies were getting acclimated playing on the newly renovated Ellis Field, the Roadrunners proved to be a modest challenge. In spite of the 2-0 victory, Texas A&M head soccer coach G Guerrieri said they didn’t get off on the best foot. “I thought we went off to a slow start,” Guerrieri said. “Especially in the first 30 minutes, we were trying to do way too much. It’s one of those things when you have big crowds, big full houses, it’s exciting. It gets you going so much.” Though the Aggies fired fourteen shots off in the first

half, they were held to 0-0 until the last few seconds prior to halftime. Senior defender Lyndsey Gnatzig made a key save on goal when she ran behind sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Day with a little more than twenty minutes left in the first half. Gnatzig said this is what she prepares for in practice. “[With] Coach Wally we practice that a lot,” Gnatzig said. “He said just how important it was to make sure you get behind the keeper and that’s what I was thinking. He was just running through my mind saying, ‘Get behind, get behind!’ so I knew I should at least make an effort to try to save it.”

• Your records will be reviewed and your eligibility status will be displayed online instantly.

The Aggies finally got a break late in the first half when sophomore forward Annie Kunz scored a goal with only 18 seconds left. Guerrieri mentioned how important it was to score a goal right before the half. Not long after the second half began, senior midfielder Chelsea Jones took a corner kick that connected with sophomore midfielder Meghan Streight. Streight headed the ball in the net and the Aggies took a 2-0 advantage over the Roadrunners that held until the end of the game. The Aggies will take on No. 23 Rutgers at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Ellis Field.

Chandler Smith: These are historic times, enjoy them while you can

N

ot since the early 1960s, when then-A&M president James Earl Rudder pushed to allow women’s admittance into the University, has there been a more intriguing time to attend Texas A&M. A school known for its longwithstanding traditions and rich history, A&M came to embrace a concept it hadn’t for some time — change. The move to the Southeastern Conference — made official on July 1 — thoroughly embodies that concept. A calculated move to transition A&M from a regional brand to a national one, the conference gives the University and its athletic programs an unparalleled national platform. Soak in this rare opportunity. Soak in the opportunity to experience the dawn of a new era. Soak in the culture that is the SEC. What you will discover about the SEC will likely shock and delight you. As has been stated by many individuals before now, A&M has always been an SEC school — it just didn’t know it. This conference’s sense of pride and spirit, particularly as it pertains to football, is not unlike what you’ll see here in Aggieland. The SEC possesses passion and pride in abundance. From ‘War Eagle’ and Toomer’s Corner to ‘Hotty Toddy’ and The Grove, the Aggies will immediately fit in culturally with the ‘League of Champions.’ Kyle Field will join LSU’s ‘Death Valley’, Georgia’s ‘Between the Hedges’ and Florida’s ‘The Swamp’ as some of the toughest venues in college sports. Then, of course, the conference’s athletic tradition speaks for itself.

Pg. 6-08.27.12.indd 1

In football alone, the conference claims six straight national championships since 2006 and counting. In the 2011-2012 season, the SEC clinched nine national championships in all sports. The Aggies must maintain or upgrade its performance across the board if they wish to remain among the nation’s elite athletic institutions. Even the great Pat Henry, A&M’s six-time national title winning coach in track and field, will be challenged by the likes of Arkansas, LSU and Florida for top dog. All I can say is this: hang in there. Take solace in the fact that not every team in the conference is coached by Nick Saban. Will athletic glory, especially in football, be more difficult to obtain? Absolutely. Will the Aggies, in time, be able to regularly compete for conference and national championships? You bet, but be patient. In the meantime, take the trip to Ole Miss to see what SEC tailgating is all about. Witness the Florida game at Kyle Field on Sept. 8 potentially match or exceed all previous atmospheres in one of the most traditionladen stadiums in the country. Do it for the Arkansas and LSU games, too. Hang tough Aggies, but savor the ride. You’ll be glad you did. Chandler Smith is a junior communication major and the sports editor at The Battalion.

Isaac Continued from page 1

Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for seven deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage just north of the island chain. The storm also caused a delay to the 2012 Republican National Convention. Convention officials said Republicans will formally bestow their presidential nomination Tuesday night, one day later than planned, on Mitt Romney. In Tampa, convention officials said they would convene on Monday, then recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm is expected to pass. At Miami International Airport, more than 550 flights Sunday were canceled. Inside the American Airlines terminal, people craned for a look out of one of the doors as a particularly strong band of Isaac began lashing the airport with strong rain and high wind. Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles from the center, meaning storm conditions are possible even in places not in Isaac’s direct path. In the event of a hurricane or tropical storm hitting the Texas Coast, College Station is one of four communities in southeast Texas to be certified Storm Ready. Storm Ready is a nationwide community preparedness program that uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle all types of severe weather, according to the National Weather Service. The Bryan-College Station area was full of evacuees for Hurricane Ike in 2008, with more than 6,800 people filling 32 shelters. Some of those shelters included schools, where locals of the Bryan-College Station area were encouraged to take refuge if their houses were substandard. Among those schools were College Station Middle School, Stephen F. Austin Middle School, Bonham Elementary and Anson Jones. As for Texas A&M students and faculty, G. Rollie White Coliseum and Reed Arena was opened as an emergency shelter.

Class of 2016 freshmen, above, perform their wildcat during the Freshman Convocation on Sunday afternoon in Reed Arena. Below, Student Body President John Claybrook speaks at the 2012 Freshman Convocation.

Convocation Continued from page 1

President R. Bowen Loftin welcomed the freshmen to the Texas A&M University Community of Learners and Scholars, along with the various departments of the University. Each department was recognized as the freshmen stood for the department they would be joining. Some departments were smaller than others, said freshman environmental sciences major Madison MetskerGalarza. “I loved seeing everyone from all the majors, MetskerGalarza said. “I probably have one of the smallest majors. We’ve got about five people, so it was nice to see the larger ones like the engineering majors. The keynote speaker for the convocation was John Hurtado, associate professor in the department of aerospace engineering. Hurtado is a firstgeneration student who shared his story of how he graduated college. Hurtado spoke about the professors who pushed him to succeed, which is a role he now fulfills at A&M. Freshmen kinesiology major Blake McKenna said it was a message received well by the students. “It was cool to see that no matter what you come from you can work through your situation and get to where you want to be, McKenna said. Student Body President John Claybrook also welcomed the Class of 2016 by in-

stilling in them the values and traditions cherished by Aggies. “The Aggie family is unique because of the few things that contribute to making this family and this network so amazing, Claybrook said. “We stand for each in events like Silver Taps and Muster and we remember those in our family who have passed. This message also resonated among the students. “I loved his message about the whole school being a family, McKenna said. “Silver Taps shows the families affected that our family cares. Claybrook said he’s just as enthusiastic as the freshmen for the beginning of the school year. “I am very excited. There’s a lot of energy on campus right now and it’s different than what I’ve felt in the past and some of that might have to do with the SEC, Claybrook said. “It’s just a really exciting time for the University. For Claybrook, it was his first test as student body presi-

dent that pitted him against the largest audience he’d ever addressed. But he said he was eager to share his feelings about Aggie traditions. “I was stunned at how many people came, Claybrook said. “Tradition at A&M has stood the test of time and that’s definitely worth sharing. The event, while establishing the academic tie between the freshmen and the University, also gave the members of the Class of 2016 the opportunity to look at the class as a whole. “I really liked how every college was represented and how everyone came together for the Class of 2016, said freshmen business major Elizabeth Jarabek. McKenna said the freshmen were reminded that, in a sense, they are the same. “I thought it was very encouraging to see so many fellow freshmen who are in the same place that I am, McKenna said.

Buzbee Continued from page 1

The building is being ushered in alongside the largest number of cadets in decades. “We’ll start the year with 2,302 cadets; that’s the largest Corps we’ve had in 30 years and that’s something we’re very proud of,” Ramirez said. Gov. Rick Perry was among those to speak. Perry, Class of 1972, was a member of the Corps of Cadets like Tony Buzbee, after whom the building is named. Both he and his wife Zoe made the contribution. “The name of this building is the epitome of honor, sacrifice and courage,” Perry said of Buzbee. Buzbee graduated from Texas A&M in 1990 when he was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps. Perry said during his service in the Persian Gulf and Somalia, he received the Navy Commendation Medal. After serving in the military, Buzbee became a lawyer, and has since become one of the most successful trial lawyers in the U.S. According to Perry, it was during his time in the Corps that Buzbee acquired the necessary skills to be successful. “The Corps of Cadets honed Tony Buzbee’s instincts and his abilities, as it still does today with everyone of those cadets,” Perry said. The building itself, located

Buzbee said it was for this reason he decided to donate the money necessary for the building to be built. Something he said was an easy sell. “You get asked a lot for donations for this and that and a lot of the time you’re like ‘prove to me why I should give the money,’” Buzbee said. “To have a center that can bring a young person in and help them with their study habits, help them with their tutoring, computers, lounges. I hope it makes a difference.” Lt. Gen. and Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Weber,

Class of 1972, said the building was an initial step as the Corps continues to grow and establish its place on campus. “It’s the first step of many toward ensuring the existence of a Corps of Cadets in perpetuity to our beloved Texas A&M University,” Weber said. “This facility will be the cornerstone that supports our cadets in their quest for both academic excellence and leadership development.” The construction of the building took about 15 months, according to the Media Relations Coordinator for the Corps Annette Walker, Class of 1988. The project has coincided with dorm renovations that are currently taking place. Walker said there is a plan for another leadership center on the eastern edge of the Quad, and that funding is already in place. The building’s opening comes at a time of transition on campus as the school continues to grow and enters into the SEC. But the Corps is something that isn’t going to change in regards to its value and role, Perry said. “There’s one thing that will never change in Aggieland, and that is that the Corps of Cadets will always be the heartbeat of this great school,” Perry said. “It is here that boys and girls are transformed into men and
