James Solano: Aggies keep conference title hopes alive against undefeated OSU
Friday
◗ A&M blanked Oklahoma 3-0 at Ellis Field
◗ Freshman Kelly Monogue
he Aggies rounded off two of their last three games of the season with a 3–0 victory over Oklahoma Friday, and a 0–0 draw against No. 2 Oklahoma State on Sunday.
Sunday’s match was a long anticipated meeting of preseason favorites. The neversay-die Aggies (12-5-1, 5-1-1 Big 12) battled the Cowgirls (16-0-2, 5-0-2) in a tough, physical defensive battle where the two teams failed to find the back of the net, and nearly racked up as many penalties as they did shots-on-goal. A&M had 18 fouls and 19 shots, and OSU had 19 fouls and 20 shots. “We wanted to do everything we could so that we could win the Big 12,” freshman forward Annie Kunz said. “We didn’t want some other team to have to lose in order for
us to win. It’s definitely upsetting that we didn’t come out with a win, but we fought as hard as we could.” The Aggies denied the Cowgirls from clinching the regular season conference title Sunday, with a scoreless draw, putting another blemish on OSU’s undefeated record after the Texas Longhorns (10-6-1, 3-3-1 Big 12) tied the Cowgirls, 1–1, last Sunday. Now, all the Aggies can do is keep a close eye on the Cowgirls as the two teams finish off the regular season to see who will
netted two goals and assisted on the third ◗ The top-ranked Aggie offense outshot the Sooners 29-12 Sunday
◗ The Aggies forced a 0-0 draw against No. 2 Oklahoma State ◗ OSU was awarded 10 corner kicks compared to one for A&M ◗ In an intense game, Oklahoma State committed 19 fouls while Texas A&M was called for 18, including two yellow cards Read the OSU game recap online at thebatt.com.

exas A&M football needs all the help it can get at this point to win the Big 12 Conference title in its last year with the league. Who knew Texas Tech would lend the Aggies a hand?
AGGIE ATHLETICS
Senior receiver Jeff Fuller dives for a touchdown in A&M’s road victory against Iowa State on Saturday. Fuller caught seven passes for 75 yards. Senior running back Cyrus Gray and junior Christine Michael both eclipsed the 100-yard mark rushing while combining for a total of 267 yards on the ground. Read the full recap online at thebatt.com.
Tension between Aggies and Red Raiders — including students, alumni and school presidents — combusted when “someone” vandalized an A&M bus before the Aggies won 45-40 in Lubbock three weeks ago. Aggie fans should break out the fire hoses to douse the heated exchanges after Tech beat conferencefavorite Oklahoma Saturday, 41-38. The colossal collapses against Oklahoma State and Arkansas in weeks four and five left the Aggies to dig themselves out of a huge hole. Reaching as high as
No. 7, the two debacles nearly sunk the Aggies’ ship with head coach Mike Sherman leaving all starting positions open to competition. Sherman and the crew patched some holes and righted the ship for wins against Tech, Baylor and Iowa State. Oklahoma’s invincible offense and menacing defense still haunted college football fans until Tech stole a win in Norman, sending the Big 12 into another carousel — this time on the football field. After the Sooners were dethroned, it would seem A&M has a chance at winning the conference. The Aggies had a sloppy road win against the Red Raiders. Tech beat a hazed Oklahoma team on its home field. According to my calculations, that means a win for the Aggies in Norman is 63 percent probable. So have the Aggies returned as title contenders? No. Kansas State and OSU are tied at the See Football on page 5

“Paranormal Activity 3” didn’t just go bump in the night. It made a ton of noise at the box office with a recordsetting, $54 million opening. The third film in Paramount Pictures’ low-budget fright franchise, which was No. 1 at the box office, had the biggest debut ever for a horror movie, according to Sunday studio estimates. It broke the previous record part two set a year ago with $40.7 million. It’s also the biggest opening ever for an October release, topping the $50.35 million Paramount’s “Jackass 3D” made last year. “Paranormal Activity 3” is actually a prequel, with the discovery of disturbing home-movie footage from 1988. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who made the creepy documentary “Catfish,” took over directing duties this time. Don Harris, Paramount’s president of distribution, said the studio hoped part three would simply perform better than part two. The first “Paranormal Activity,” with its reported $15,000 budget, became a phenomenon in 2009 through midnight screenings and word of mouth.

world Earthquake rocks Turkey, kills 138 ANKARA, Turkey — Cries of panic and horror filled the air as a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 138 people as buildings pancaked and crumpled into rubble. The death toll was expected to rise as rescuers sifted through the rubble and reached outlying villages. Tens of thousands fled into the streets running, screaming or trying to reach relatives on cell phones as apartment and office buildings cracked or collapsed. As the full extent of the damage became clear, survivors dug in with shovels or even their bare hands, desperately trying to rescue the trapped and the injured. “There are many people under the rubble,” Veysel Keser, the mayor of the district of Celebibag, told NTV. “People are in agony. We can hear their screams for help.” Celebibag is near the hardest-hit area: Ercis, an eastern city of 75,000 close to the Iranian border and on one of Turkey’s most earthquakeprone zones. The bustling city of Van, about 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of Ecris, also sustained substantial damage. Highways in the area caved in. The temblor struck at 1:41 p.m. (1041 GMT; 6:41 a.m. EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey said. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at least 93 people were killed in Van, 45 others died in Ercis, and about 350 were injured. Several people were still trapped under rubble, he said, without citing any estimates. Erdogan said rescue work would continue through the night.

Robert Carpenter: Students and faculty need to take responsibility for A&M’s future
W
hen a think-tank offered policy suggestions that threatened the research structure at A&M this summer, University faculty were up in arms. At a May 26 Board of Regents meeting, mechanical engineering professor Jaime Grunlan took to the microphone and responded with a passionate speech about the University’s future.
“This [university] should be protected from those seeking to harm it,â€? Grunlan said. “With our leadership and our world-class faculty‌ we can create our own best improvements for areas where we need to improve.â€? The standing-room-only crowd of faculty gave Grunlan a minute-long ovation, complete with whoops and only silenced when Regents Chairman Richard Box disingenuously thanked the faculty for their “participation.â€? This passion and commitment to A&M, however, was short-lived. On Oct. 5, Grunlan took the microphone again — this time, before a faculty audience. “It’s time for faculty to give a damn.â€? More than a few of those in attendance appeared annoyed or insulted by Grunlan’s remarks, and perhaps deservedly so. After all, they already gave a damn. Those listening took the time to attend this faculty-specific installation of the Commitment to Excellence Dialogues, a series of discussions between administrators and university stakeholders about

Commitment to excellence “Our shared accountability dialogue: 1-3 p.m. Tuesday in Koldus room 110 how to improve A&M. But Grunlan wasn’t speaking to them. He was speaking to the empty chairs in the room, which outnumbered faces at a ratio nearing 3-to-1. Of the 2,800 faculty at A&M, roughly 100 showed up. Less than five months after Grunlan told the regents “we can create our own best improvements, few had time to do just that. It is little wonder that Box didn’t appear to take Grunlan’s first speech seriously. Later that evening, I attended an undergraduate-specific Commitment to Excellence Dialogues event. Grunlan should have shown up to this one, too. There was room to spare alongside the 15 students and smattering of administrators in attendance. Fifteen undergraduates among 39,000-plus. And notably, most were underclassmen. The

juniors and seniors — the “campus leaders — were no-shows. Students at A&M take pride in their leadership ability. It is remarkable how much work and dedication go into organizations like SGA, RHA, Bonfire, the MSC, Greek Life, the Corps and Big Event. But when the administration asked students to attend this Dialogues event and help direct the course of the University, empty seats showed up. Which leads to a question: when it comes to caring about A&M’s future, is this student body just a bunch of empty seats? We students gripe when professors obviously don’t care about students. And about those who’s English we can’t understand. We gripe about textbook prices, parking prices and exorbitant charges in our tuition and fees. We complain that A&M can be a hostile learning environment, that freshmen feel lost when thrown into impersonal 200-student lectures, or that classes in our core curriculum waste our time and money.
We complain that the administration isn’t changing any of this. But who do we complain to? The only people genuinely powerless to bring about change: each other. Now, the administration is giving us its attention. As Loftin-et-al reevaluates University practices in pursuit of Vision 2020, now is our chance to ask for student-friendly policies. If 10,000 students attend the campus dialogues event tomorrow, I can’t promise that University President Bowen Loftin or Provost Karan Watson will make one decision differently. There’s simply no way to know. But if students expect the administration to listen to our voice, we have to first speak. Tuesday’s Dialogues forum would be a good place to start. I believe students do give a damn about this university and the education we receive. It’s time that we show it.

that means the Aggies will have beaten the Wildcats and taken the advantage in the event of a tie. Another K-State loss would put the Twelfth Man at ease. 3. OSU lose twice — The Pokes beat the Aggies and hold the advantage in the event of a tie at the end of conference play. Translation: we need them to lose twice. Best chance: A&M wins remaining games. take home the conference title. OSU will play Texas Tech at home on Thursday, as the Aggies wish for a tie. A&M will travel to Austin on Friday to take on Texas for the last time as conference foes, and must earn a victory in order to win the conference crown. “We still have a chance,” head coach G Guerrieri said. “We need [OSU] to tie, and we need to win on Friday to win the title.” If the Cowgirls tie the Red Raiders and the Aggies beat the Longhorns, A&M will take home the regular season Big 12 title for the 11th time as members of the Conference, onward to its 17 straight NCAA appearance.

The last time the Aggies traveled to Austin was last season to take on its arch-rival for the regular season finale. The match ended in a double-overtime, 1–1 draw. But the Aggies are looking for different result Friday, in hopes of hoisting a Big 12 trophy before bolting to the Southeastern Conference in 2012. “We started off a little rough,” Kunz said, about the beginning of the season. “We had a brand new team with 10 freshmen coming in, but I think we’ve grown in to a really good team that definitely will be a contender in the NCAA tournament and the Big 12 tournament.” James Solano is a senior agricultural communication and journalism major and sports writer for The Battalion.
