Students feel UT ticket pull unfair Barrett House The Battalion Students who camped out in front of Kyle Field for more than two days seeking front row tickets for the Thanksgiving A&M-UT game were sorely disappointed Monday morning when a ticketing gaffe failed to reward their perseverance. Those affected most by the error were the line leaders, many of whom arrived early Saturday morning to camp out. Ticket pull began at 7 a.m. Monday morning. Sections 231 and 232 straddle the 50-yard line, making the front rows sufficiently valuable for students to spend the weekend camping out to pull the seats. However, after pulling on Monday, the leaders gathered and discovered their tickets were all in section 231, but none were in the first 8 rows. While complaining to the ticket manager, the section continued to fill up. Once it was full, section 232 started to pull, allowing those who were further back in line to receive front row tickets. “Whenever we went inside to complain, we came back out and I met a girl who had gotten row 2 in section 232. I’m sitting in row 14, section 231. I’d much rather have her ticket, senior agronomy major Sergio Espinal said. Espinal added that he arrived in front of Kyle Field at 2 a.m. Saturday to ensure that he received the best tickets possible, and that he and other leaders provided structure to the early arrivers, using lists to document line orders. “If it hadn’t been for us, the place would have been in chaos by 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Espinal

Getting a goal eight minutes in let our players breathe and as the game went on, we got stronger and stronger. A&M had a dominant performance in its shutout, allowing LSU one shot on frame and six shots on the night. The Aggies were
able to get on the scoreboard early, taking a 1–0 edge into the half with a goal by freshman forward Kelley Monogue. Monogue has 19 goals on the season, tying the A&M record for most goals scored by a freshman. Ashlee Pistorius set the mark in 2004. In the second half of the match, the Aggies tacked on three additional goals en route to a shutout victory and a berth in the second round. In the 72nd minute, Freshman Meghan Streight put the Aggies up 2-0 with a header into the back of the net. Less than two minutes later, senior Beth West was able to pitch the ball from the
right corner to fellow senior Bri Young at the six yard box, where the veteran was in position to head the ball into the goal for a 3–0 A&M edge. The Aggies were able to put the final nail in the coffin on LSU’s season in the 87th minute. Junior Lyndsey Gnatzig chipped a long ball from midfield to the attacking third where freshman Annie Kunz received the ball and beat an LSU defender in a oneon-one matchup. Kunz blasted the ball from the penalty area for a 4–0 A&M finish. The Battalion For the first time this year, Texas A&M men’s basketball head coach Billy Kennedy coached from the sidelines Sunday, leading his team to a 83-58 victory against the Southern University Jaguars. Emotions were high in Kennedy’s return from medical leave, following his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis last month. Southern head coach Roman Banks was one of Kennedy’s assistant coaches at Southern Louisiana and said it was hard to focus on the game. “[I] was kind of emotional when I first came out there, Banks said. “I had to get over that emotion first. I had to sit down for a little bit and then concentrate on the game. That was more important, to see him out there. The game started with A&M junior forward Ray Turner putting back an offensive rebound for a quick two points. Turner went on to grab eight rebounds and registered his second consecutive 20-point effort while recording two steals. The Aggies jumped to an early 6-2 lead and then stretched it to 11-4 with 16:30 left in the first half. Junior guard Elston Turner contributed seven of the Aggie’s 21 points early, as A&M took a 21-6 lead
were capable of getting top two, McRaven said. “They competed really well over the second half of the race when it really mattered. The No. 24 Aggie men earned an automatic berth to the national title due to one of Lelei’s best performances of the season. Lelei ran the 10,000-meter race at Cottonwood Creek golf course in Waco, Texas, in 30:09.4. He outpaced SEC individual champion Eric Fernandez (30:18.0) of Arkansas by more than nine seconds. “It’s very incredible for us, as a team, to automatically qualify for See Regionals on page 5

said. “We feel like we deserve something. Carole Dollins, vice president and division manager of ticketing, said a technical error caused the mishap. “Section 231 pulled first. However section 232 is supposed to pull first, and has always been pulled first in the past, Dollins said. “As a result, the system pulled starting at row 9. It’s something that we didn’t catch, and by the time we did, we found the tickets had all been pulled. John Sorkness, senior bioenvironmental sciences major who waited in line for more than 48 hours, called the mistake an injustice. “Every person who was first in line was severely disappointed with the tickets they received, Sorkness said. Many of the line leaders had camped out before, and never had a problem like this. “There’s nothing in our guidelines that says it isn’t random, Dollins said. “When you consider we’ve got 12 windows, there’s nothing that we imply that you’re going to be in the front row. Dollins would not comment as to why the system started pulling at row 9 in section 231. An anonymous source said that she has had tickets in these rows when attending with a student athlete. Another source, a student athlete, said athletes go online to pull tickets — via athtickets. tamu.edu — and don’t have to wait in line with other students. He added that his tickets are usually near the 50-yard line on the first deck. The NCAA manual, which contains bylaws

Dollins invited students to provide feedback in order to improve the ticket pulling process. “I want to give students an avenue to talk about this issue and discuss it in more detail, Dollins said. “We need to make the effort to discuss this further.
Searching for help, President Barack Obama lobbied the skeptical leaders of Russia and China on Saturday for support in keeping Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed menace to the world, hoping to yield a “common response to a crisis that is testing international unity. The United States’ vast worries about Iran grew starker with a report this week by the U.N. atomic agency that asserted in the strongest terms yet Iran is conducting secret work with the sole intent of developing nuclear arms. The U.S. claims a nucleararmed Iran could set off an arms race among rival states and directly threaten Israel.

Texas’ war on women Naila Dhanani: Planned Parenthood’s contribution to society deserves state funding

merica: land of the free — unless you’re a woman who wants to exercise her reproductive rights. Although abortion has been legal in this country since 1973, women are unable to be openly “pro-life” — pro-their life, that is.
The 40 Days for Life campaign has recently come under fire by those who consider “pro-lifers” to be religious fanatics who care more about the child in the womb than they do the mother. This is absolutely not true. Pro-Life Aggies, the Brazos Valley Coalition for Life and the 40 Days for Life campaign offer counseling and life resources for women who are considering abortions. Hope Pregnancy Center and other centers in B-CS offer free ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, baby clothes and supplies, and classes for struggling mothers who chose life instead of an abortion. Members of Pro-life Aggies regularly volunteer to babysit children for mothers who take these classes and recently even held a baby supply donation drive. Pro-lifers in the B-CS area care deeply about the women affected by abortion and are committed to peacefully promoting life in B-CS.

Adrian O’Hanlon III: Using the friendship logarithm to cope with another A&M football meltdown
I
Not much since KSU quarterback Collin Klein rushed for five touchdowns and threw for another. But like the Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon when he tested his friendship algorithm, I’m choosing the least objectionable activity in writing about the young talent A&M displayed against KSU. Sure, senior running back Cyrus Gray shouldered the load for the A&M offense – which b-t dubs, had more offensive yards than its opponent and LOST for the fourth time this season. But several underclassmen got the tap, proving to coaches they belonged on the field. Before the K-State game, sophomore running back Ben Malena was timid at his third string spot. Against the Wildcats though, Malena was quick,
physical and ran like his life depended on each carry. He even took a page from legendary NFL back Larry Csonka’s playbook and trucked a dude on a big gain. Sophomore quarterback Jameill Showers got some snaps and ran in for a score. I know it wasn’t a “back-upsaves-the-season kind of a game, but getting the guy’s legs under his feet is important for the beasts of the Southeastern Conference. Get him some tough runs so he’ll just bounce right up next year when Alabama and LSU are camping in the A&M backfield. That’s not a shot at the o-line. The hog mollies up front have been the most reliable part of the team all year. Sophomores Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews anchor the baby-faced and talented line that can move mountains on command. Helping on the outside – really anywhere coach says he’s needed – is sophomore tight end Michael Lamothe. Every time Lamothe scores, Brooks and Dunn’s “Hard workin’ man should blare on the Kyle Field PA system. Give this guy a hard hat and send him to the Liberal Arts building construction site and it’ll be complete by the end of the semester. Not much can be said about the defense but sophomores Damontre’ Moore and Toney Hurd are some diamonds in the rough. Hurd is a tiny

know you’re getting tired of hearing it, but the Aggies are done. They can’t finish games, they drop passes, they can’t cover, they can’t wrap up. So what did go right this weekend as Texas A&M lost not one, but TWO doubledigit leads to Kansas State?
nationals, Lelei said after the race. “I woke up this morning and told the guys, ‘let’s go get it. Why do others say we will be number three, we can finish in the top two.’ Sixteen points separated A&M and No. 11 Texas, as the South Central champion Longhorns scored 40 points to the second-place Aggies’ 56. A&M and Texas are two of 18 automatic qualifiers from nine regional meets during the weekend. Thirteen at-large selections will fill out the field of 31 teams for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. No. 15 Arkansas – reigning SEC champions – took bronze with 65 points and will need an at-large selection to compete at nationals. Head track coach Pat Henry said beating Arkansas is a good indicator of what A&M can expect in the SEC next season. “Arkansas is the SEC champion, and when we talk about going to the SEC it’s a good thing. We can compete right up in there, Henry said. “Across the board, with both men and women, they came here ready to compete and get after it. On the women’s side, A&M entered the meet ranked sixth in South

defensive back that plays like a pit bull – he follows his nose to the ball. Before you get worried about his cover skills, he’s shown flashes at safety and can play some corner. Moore is a ball-hawking linebacker that makes tackles and tries to strip the ball on the way down. Unfortunately he is the Robin to junior linebacker Sean Porter’s Batman – still too immature and inconsistent to take on the lead role. Lastly, I wasn’t as terrified to have junior corner Dustin Harris in man coverage. For weeks, the only thing he’s covered is his head with a vibrantly colored mohawk, but this week I thought he stepped up. Maybe all the purple put him in a zone, or maybe it was the fact that K-State only threw 27 times. There’s no doubt that A&M should have won the K-State game, but this season is riddled with “shoulda, woulda, couldas. Let’s start moving on because we’ll have some of our own if we don’t focus on our academics, careers and Aggie basketball. WHOOP! Women 1. Arkansas 2. Texas 3. Texas A&M Central region and impressed with a third-place finish. Taking first place was No. 17 Arkansas with 49 points, followed by No. 14 Texas’ 69 points and A&M’s 90. Leading the Aggie women was sophomore runner Natosha Rogers, who qualified for nationals with a fifthplace finish. McRaven said Rogers’ time of 20:41.1 on the 6-000-meter course was indicative of A&M’s progression throughout the season. “I thought we were ranked a little low for the region, so it was good to see our women’s team come out and continue to improve, McRaven said. “Their performance today, finishing close behind a very talented Texas team, shows how much we have improved over the course of the season. Rogers said watching the men’s team pushed the women to finish strong. “The team placing third was shocking, Rogers said. “Seeing the guys finish second before we started our race was motivating, because we wanted to be there with them at nationals.

A&M sweeps Mizzou at home Courtney Nelson The Battalion Continuing to make its push toward the NCAA tournament with its twentieth win of the season, the Texas A&M volleyball team swept Missouri (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) Saturday at Reed Arena. A&M (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) lost the match against the Tigers earlier in the season by a narrow margin, but showed improvement since that meeting. “To get the twentieth win was really a lot of fun for me as the coach, A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli said after defeating Missouri. “Our balance was maybe what stood out the most in terms of our distribution. Everyone was reliable today and ready to go in a very focused and disciplined way. I think that is what I enjoyed the most about our team’s performance today. Game one began with both teams exchanging points, with nine ties and four lead changes before the Aggies came alive at the 16-16 mark. Senior Kelsey Black put down five kills in the frame, while junior Tori Mellinger hit .571 with four kills. Junior Lindsey Miller was effective at the net with three blocks in the first to shut down the Mizzou offense. A rocket by Black gave the Aggies the 21-16 lead before they went on to take the first set in a convincing 25-17 win. The Tigers took the early lead in the second set at 12-8, but the Aggies made up ground and tied the game at 13-13. Black spiked a ball to the face of Mizzou freshman Sarah Meister for a second time in the match to put A&M ahead 16-13. A&M’s 19-16 lead was erased as the Tigers tied it before A&M libero Megan Pendergast served up two aces for A&M’s string of points
to make it game point 24-21. Sophomore setter Allie Sawatzky finished it with a kill as the Aggies went up 2-0. The third set started in favor of the Aggies, but Missouri came back to within one point before A&M went off on a 5-0 run to put the Aggies ahead 17-11. The Tigers battled back to make it 16-18, but another Pendergast ace, a kill from Mellinger, and two Missouri service errors ended the match 25-20. Mellinger finished the game with nine kills and 12 digs while hitting .350. Black and junior Alisia Kastmo each finished with nine kills, while the Aggies as a whole hit .268. “We’ve only had one loss so far in the second round [of conference play], and even in practice, every one has been getting better, Mellinger said. “I feel like we’re almost unstoppable. I don’t think we’re trying too hard and letting everything flow naturally. I think our confidence level is super high because everything feels so natural. The distribution was relatively even for the Tigers as Brittney Brimmage and Whitney Little posted nine kills each, and Lisa Henning recorded a game-high 11. A&M will have the week off to prepare for Saturday’s contest at Oklahoma, which the Aggies beat earlier in the season. Following that match, the Aggies will come back to College Station for the Lone Star Showdown with Texas before finishing the regular season with Iowa State. “The team is looking really good, and even though the next few games will be really tough, I feel like this gives them some momentum and hope for the rest of the season, said senior sport management major Brittani Kelly.
