A

s I watched this magical 2012 Texas A&M football season unfold, I couldn’t help but recall my first Aggie bowl game several years ago. A&M played Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl and I would witness my first live taste of SEC football.

It was men against boys — the Vols were comically bigger, faster and stronger than the helpless players on A&M’s sideline. The Aggies, quite frankly, didn’t stand a chance.

A&M would lose 387. “Rocky Top� blared through the rafters as the Aggies somberly filed out of the stadium, 12th Man towels in hand. Yet somehow, despite the on-field misery, I was hooked. That day, I fell in love with college football.

Still, I was left to wonder: just when would A&M get to that level? Season after season the Aggies were mired in mediocrity, failing to get out of their own way.

Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma teams and Mike Leach’s Texas Tech teams — among others — ran circles around an underachieving program searching for a return to prominence and sense of identity.

I’d always heard the stories of the old “Wrecking Crew� and, like all of us, witnessed the SEC’s rise to dominance from afar. I watched Les Miles pick up where Nick Saban left off at LSU. I watched Urban Meyer dominate at Florida. I watched Saban return to the SEC and wreak havoc with a potent smash-mouth formula

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine A&M moving to the SEC before 2010, but when the prospect was on the table, the transition made too much sense not to happen. I, like many other Aggies, was devastated at the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s initial hesitation to join the â&#x20AC;&#x153;League of Champions.â&#x20AC;? When it finally happened, there was little doubt the potential for the A&M football program had skyrocketed enormously.

Enter head coach Kevin Sumlin, strength and conditioning coach Larry Jackson, defensive coordinator Mark Snyder, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Former head coach Mike Sherman left a winning foundation, but his final season would encapsulate A&Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decade-long struggle of possessing the talent and resources for success without the results to show for it.

Aggies could only hope

The Aggies, now 10-2, silenced critics doubting they could compete in the Southeastern Conference.

Sumlin would keep A&M competitive in the vaunted SEC and maybe â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just maybe â&#x20AC;&#x201D; take the program to the next level.

Sumlin and Co., with the assistance of now-Heisman winner Manziel, answered the call in spades.

Who wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thought A&M would win 10 games in its first season in the SEC? Who wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thought the Aggies would march into the defending national championsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; own house and knock off No. 1 Alabama? Who wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thought the player leading the charge would be the first freshman to win the Heisman in the history of the award? Not many, but it happened.

Now looking back, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult not to appreciate what this 2012 Aggie football team accomplished against unlikely odds and a sea of doubters. The Aggie offense is blowing up scoreboards and setting records as the A&M defense surpasses

all previous expectations.

The Aggie coaching staff, meanwhile, now holds the recruiting cards in arguably the nationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; most talentrich state.

Seven years ago, I could hardly fathom â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at the conclusion of A&Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clash with the SECâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most prominent program â&#x20AC;&#x201D; I would see the men in maroon leaving in victory. I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe that instead of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yea Alabamaâ&#x20AC;? trumpeting proudly in the distance, much like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rocky Topâ&#x20AC;? in 2005, I would hear a triumphant Aggie War Hymn. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d scoff at the notion that an Aggie redshirt freshmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name would be called as the winner of the Heisman Trophy.

My, have things changed.

What a privilege it was to experience it.

“We’re extremely excited,” said Johnathan Brinsden, chief operation officer of Midway. “All three of us on the executive team are Aggies.”

The project, located at the northeast corner of University and South College Avenue, will be developed and built in phases. Phase one will begin by 2014, phase two by 2018 and phase three in 2022. A hotel and the centerpiece of Campus Pointe will be built in phase one, while other amenities — including highend restaurants, retail components, game day condos and various forms of entertainment — will be built in phases two and three.

“The goal is for it to be a destination place for the College Station and Bryan area,” said Phillip Ray, chief business development officer

Special to The Battalion The construction for Campus Pointe, a mixed-use urban village available for the region to use, will begin in 2014 and replace some of the buildings of the University Apartments.

This development will require apartment complexes College View, Avenue A and Hensel to be vacated by June 2013 and demolished to make room for the project. Although the newer apartments built in 2010 will remain, other amenities will be built there instead.

“Texas A&M gave Midway, the developer, a ground lease to start this project,” said Carol Binzer, director of administrative and support services of Residence Life.

“The new development isn’t going to be a new apartment complex.

of the Texas A&M University System. “This will be a place where people can come to stay, especially in the hotel. This project is a community that I think is going to serve not only the University, but the region as a whole.”

Development of this $600 million project will occur during the next 10 to 20 years. There will be plenty of green space and pedestrian-friendly areas to go along with the shops, restaurants and other buildings.

“We want this to be a place where people come to visit for the day,” Ray said. “I think it will be the hub of our community because if you come to College Station right now, you mainly just come for the University.”

Brinsden said Campus Pointe will create a community destination. It won’t just focus on the University.

“It will be a great development and project and we have great pride in having the opportunity to do something for the community,” Brinsden said.

University apartment demolition plans affect resident families Bernardo Gonzalez Special to The Battalion Some graduate families may find themselves in a tough situation at the end of the school year with the demolition of the University Apartments to make way for the Campus Pointe construction project.

Three of the older five buildings that make up the University apartments — Hensel, College View and Avenue A — will be demolished to make way for Campus Pointe. These apartments are commonly used as lowerrent housing by international students and their families.

Carol Binzer, director of administrative and support services for the department of residence life, said residence life will offer a four percent discount on any available two bedroom, one bath apartments to the 300 families that are being displaced.

Binzer said residence life notified families of the Adult, Graduate and Off-Campus Student Services, who can provide services to help

them find a new apartment.

However, Binzer also said residence life will not offer any storage space or help pay for the moving expenses.

She said it will be difficult for these families to find another apartment in the same price range because Hensel, College View and Avenue A have been renting apartments at a lower rate than the housing market. “[Hensel, College View and Avenue A] are the older stock of apartments. They were built around the fifties,” Binzer said. “In this market or economic climate, the University needs to maximize revenue we can make from our property, et cetera.”

Sarah Jaks, assistant coordinator of AGOSS, said it will be easy for families to make a mistake when looking to sign on to another place to live.

“It is going to take work and effort to find [an apartment],” Jaks said. “I would strongly advise [renters], even though it feels like a very tight time frame and [renters] are kind

of under the gun to make a decision, to take your time and not to rush in to signing a lease.

The residents of the Hensel apartments have different opinions on the situation.

Agnes Zoudor, wife of an ocean engineering graduate student, said the apartments should be demolished. She said there are many problems with the apartment because it is old.

The residents’ main concerns are that the new apartments are going to be too expensive and that they are not going to be as safe as the University Apartments. “[The apartment] is really good for my kids,” said Sonia Argudhi, wife of a graduate student in Texas A&M. “I have an Indian community here and the Community Center is really good.”

Su Yang Liang, a Texas A&M Physics graduate student, said he and his family are happy with the University Apartments. They enjoy the affordability and the security that the apartments provide to them and their baby.

or a colossal football victory. It didn’t even take place in College Station. It occurred in Colorado over the summer.

After summiting Mount Ebert, the second tallest peak in the continental U.S., I found myself 14,440 feet above sea level, reeling from oxygen deprivation and belowfreezing temperatures. There, on the highest mountain in Colorado and the Rockies, someone approached me and stuck out his right hand. I still remember seeing the glint of gold.

“Howdy,” he said. “I noticed your ring. My name is James. Class of 2011.”

And that’s when it all clicked.

When all the pieces came together.

When I walk the stage on Saturday morning in my black robe, it will no longer be my Texas A&M, it’ll be yours.

Even though it has been said countless times throughout the various eras of our University, I can repeat it now with complete conviction and sincerity: There is no better time to be a student at Texas A&M. But the heart of this University isn’t a national brand, a football team or a long list of beloved traditions. It’s not Kyle Field, the MSC or the Quad. It’s not Johnny Football, R. Bowen Loftin or Reveille.

It’s you and me.

I used to be jaded about people’s seemingly blind devotion to our University. I couldn’t quite grasp it. But as the curtain begin to lower on my undergraduate career, I understand.

It’s not a dedication to collection of buildings. It’s not a commitment to a particular color or mascot. It’s an allegiance to each other.

It’s not brainwashing. It’s love.

It’s what separates A&M from every other university in the world.

For me, the illuminating moment in my three and half years as a student at A&M wasn’t a classroom experience, a heartrending breakup with a girlfriend

It’s the percussive blast of The Spirit of ’02 reverberating through Kyle Field as an Aggie player crosses into the endzone with the football in tow. It’s the payoff of nervous energy as the floodlights in the stadium are extinguished for thirty seconds during Midnight Yell. It’s the glimmer of gold through ambercolored liquid at the bottom of a pitcher amid a flurry of camera bursts. It’s the mournful trumpet tones hovering in the night air at the close of Silver Taps. It’s the muzzle flash and candle glow of Muster in Reed Arena.

These are the sights and sounds that bind the current generation of A&M students to the decades

It’s the devastating silence as we filed out of Kyle Field following our defeat at the hands of t.u. after the final rivalry game. It’s a bowtie-wearing, dougie-dancing University president who has transcended the role of administrative official into an A&M icon.

It’s snowball fights and snowmen on campus during the winter of 2010. It’s the detonation of euphoria across College Station as the 2012 football team defeated number-one ranked Alabama.

It’s the women’s basketball 2011 National Championship. It’s 10,000 students filing into Reed Arena for a Bible study at Breakaway. It’s the monumental shift from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference, a watershed moment in our University’s history. It’s Jerrod Johnson, Von Miller, Ryan Tannehill, Cyrus Gray, Damontre Moore, Ryan Swope and, of course, Johnny Football.

This is our Texas A&M. No former or future student will be able to claim this slice of University history we find ourselves in. A&M stands

come to terms with what the Heisman trophy means.

“Johnny Heisman.”

“Heismanziel.” We’ve heard all the nicknames. Here’s the good news, Aggies: you can’t oversell that, because no matter how big a conception you have in your mind of the Heisman, it’s always going to be bigger than that.

Find a computer and look at a list of all the former Heisman winners. Because of the flaws in the bowl system, the fallibility in the polls and the ambiguity of the national championship, the Heisman trophy is the most iconic symbol of college football. It’s the purest thing in the purest incarnation of football. It would be hard to say that a Heisman trophy is more important than a national championship, but it’s certainly more permanent, more recognizable. Words like “fraternity,” “club” and “brotherhood” surround the group of Heisman winners.

They genuinely seem to care about the sanctity of their roll call. Johnny will always be a part of that.

John David Crow’s Heisman came well before the era of around-the-clock jabber from the sports punditry, so he’s had more buzz surrounding him in the past weeks than when he won the Heisman trophy in 1957. For more than half a century, he was the first and

How could they? I respect his accomplishments, but the usual things bother me. It was a different mode of football in those days, and it always felt a little sad that our University had to scrounge so far back into the narrative of A&M football to find something worth marketing.

Crow has his face all over spirit videos and Kyle Field banners, and he should.

So what does that say about Johnny? Johnny’s face isn’t displayed most prominently in College Station at the moment. In Times Square, the most noticeable face among the lights, signs and passersby is that of a small town kid from Kerrville Tivy High School.

New York is a fast city; they’ll forget about Johnny.

But at A&M, we’re looking at fifty-plus years of Johnny Football. He has three more years on the field, sure, assuming all the things football fans are usually wrong in assuming. He has the rest of his life as the face of A&M. Because that’s what he is.

He’s not just the most popular entity within the most popular institution of A&M. He’s the University. He’s the access point to A&M for everyone outside the College Station zip code. It’s almost hilarious how much work the University marketing guys have done, tossing around things like traditions and the SEC logo, only to have Johnny “Scooby-Heisman-Football” Manziel fall into their laps.

I expect a Manziel statue.

I expect the quote from his speech about the 12th Man in every spirit video for the next century. I expect every non-Aggie we know to hate us for how many highlight videos we watch and rewatch and I expect us not to care.

He ended his acceptance speech with a “Gig ‘Em.” For all the Aggies who have flashed a thumbs-up over the years, Johnny’s might have been the most important.

Down the line, Manziel will lead the next great Aggie up the steps before the Heisman is awarded, just as Crow did for him.

Baylor officials reported this week that Robert Griffin III’s 2011 Heisman nod was worth $250 million to the school. It seems logical that A&M will reap similar benefits. But for the 12th Man, Saturday night was worth a whole lot more.
