A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR POP THE CHAMPAGNE! The Destination Bride has reached its tenth issue and we are ready to celebrate - not only the magazine, but the gorgeous Wide Bay Burnett region we live in. This special milestone brings with it a fresh look for the magazine and loads of new content that I’ve been bursting to share with you! When I received a phone call a few months ago from The Destination Bride’s founder and Editor Jen McCue, I could not have predicted the wonderful position I find myself in today. With my background in graphic design, media and communications, I jumped at the opportunity and challenge of taking over as Editor and I’m still pinching myself as I write this letter. Jen has been an incredible support and I hope this issue makes her smile. Unlike many bridal magazines, these pages are not going to tell you what to do, when to do it, or how to do it. They will do so much more! Stay with me here. It will be worth it, I promise.
I married my husband Mark back in September of 2012 and whilst I was able to find some local suppliers, I couldn’t find others that had what I was looking for. Unfortunately I found myself online and travelling out of town despite wanting to shop locally. I found my wedding inspiration in the pages of national magazines and on Pinterest boards, both of which were filled with images of models toting dresses far beyond my price range posing in styled sets created by teams of art designers and professional stylists. Unattainable weddings. I want The Destination Bride to be everything my personal experience wasn’t. So, here’s what you WILL find in it’s pages and on the blog: • REAL COUPLES We will share their real-life love stories and details from their weddings from their realistic budgets to the local suppliers they sourced from to create their ideal day. • LOCAL VENDORS Their products, services and contact details will
be at your fingertips in our directory (in the magazine, online and printed versions). We will even showcase local products we adore and help you get to know the people behind the business. • TRENDS These will be inspired by the featured local weddings or we’ll tell you who locally can help you achieve the look for your big day. • REAL STORIES ...and opinion pieces all focused on love, people, private locations and incredible destinations found right on our doorstep. I hope you enjoy reading Issue 10 as much as I enjoyed putting it together. CHEERS! Love, ROXANNE.
I’d love to hear what you think of the issue! Drop me an email (hello@ thedestinationbride) or message via our Facebook page. ISSUE 10 | 3

PHIL MORGAN MUSIC GET TO KNOW | PHIL MORGAN | FRASER COAST Tell us a bit about yourself: I am a local singer/songwriter, born and raised on the beautiful Fraser Coast. I began performing originals professionally back in 2007, and then began playing popular covers to suit my audiences and have always enjoyed putting my spin on things. What do you enjoy about playing at weddings? Weddings are my favourite functions to play at. I love the vibe and atmosphere – generally everyone is in a fun loving and upbeat mood. As a performer, how the audience feels is infectious, so it is always lovely to have fun with the crowd. Tell us about your style of music and what couples can expect from you: I provide a fully tailored musical performance that suits the needs 16
of the couple; from a laid back garden wedding to a let the hair down, dance floor party. I play a huge range of songs from the 60’s to current chart toppers and can specifically learn special songs for the occasion. The best wedding you’ve ever played at and why it’s so memorable? I can never forget the last minute booking I had for a wedding where the guests enjoyed the complimentary vodka (one family was Russian) and spent the night on the dance floor. The speeches were fantastic, as too was Gran cutting a rug on the dance floor to a CCR medley. What are some of your favourite venues you’ve played at? I love the fresh feel of the Waterfront Restaurant in Hervey Bay and the rustic feel of the
Takura Coachhouse reception space. What do you love most about the Wide Bay Burnett/Fraser Coast region? It’s the gateway to everywhere. Fraser Island is a stone’s throw away and there are so many beautiful spots within a few hours drive. You’ve been happily married for a while now. Do you and your wife have a ‘song’ and what makes it so special to you both? Nine years, time really flies, but I can remember our wedding like it was yesterday. We danced to Keith Urban’s ‘Making Memories of Us’, which is still one of our favourite songs because of its heartfelt lyrics. www.facebook.com/philmorganmusic PHOTO | THOMSENS PHOTOGRAPHIC GALLERY

STYLISH WEDDINGS GET TO KNOW | NATALIE MAHONEY | FRASER COAST Tell us a bit about yourself: My name is Natalie and I am a youthful marriage celebrant who lives in Hervey Bay. I have been a certified civil celebrant for 9 years and love all aspects of my chosen career. What made you get into the wedding industry? I had attended a number of celebrant style weddings and became passionate about that as a career. I loved the idea of a celebrant based ceremony as it is personal and individual to the couple; it can be as extravagant or as low key as the couple wish. What’s your favourite part of your job? Meeting new clients and assisting them with designing their individual stylish ceremonies. I find being a people person and being youthful helps me connect with my clients. 18
Are there any ceremonies that have been a stand-out for you? Why? Yes, I had the pleasure of marrying a young couple at Lake McKenzie, on the most picturesque and stunning private beach I have ever seen. Getting to the location was an adventure in itself, 4WD style, but the couple were fun and relaxed and the ceremony was beautiful, capturing all their life and love together. Your three favourite wedding ceremony locations or venues? Fraser Island - Lake McKenzie, Urangan Pier and the many beautiful beaches along the Esplanade in Hervey Bay. Tell us what couples can expect when they choose you as their celebrant: I always love to meet with new couples as this helps to create
a personalised ceremony script that reflects their love story. The content can then be changed as many times as they like via email, until it is perfect for them. What do you love most about the Wide Bay Burnett / Fraser Coast region? I love the local area and the beautiful weather here. The local beaches and businesses are just divine and I love the people here as they are very friendly. Describe your wedding style in three words: Stylish, affordable and fun. www.stylishweddings.net.au PHOTO | JENNIFER McCUE PHOTOGRAPHY

STANDY’S REST SUPPLIER LOVE | WAYNE & ANGELA KONING | YENGARIE Tell us a bit about yourselves: Wayne and I are seasoned travellers and hopeless romantics. After many years living in the city, we came back home to the Fraser Coast and have chosen Standy’s Rest as our life-long home. What makes Standy’s unique? Standy’s Rest is a boutique B&B. We accommodate only one wedding or guest party at any time, which means you’ll guaranteed to have the entire B&B all to yourself. In fact, we provide a gourmet breakfast basket to your room daily, so that you can sleep in after your wedding and take breakfast at your leisure while overlooking the peaceful Mary River. A common misconception is that B&Bs are for “mature” guests... At Standy’s Rest we totally bust that myth. Our two bedroom 20
Riverview Suite is tastefully decorated in contemporary country chic style, we offer a complimentary bottle of champagne on arrival to help you wind down and the presence of our friendly animals on the property delights absolutely everyone! What services can you offer a bride and groom? Stylish and private countrystyle accommodation for their wedding preparations and of course the wedding night, along with a blank canvas venue for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. We work seamlessly with the bride, groom and wedding planner, checking in regularly. Nothing is too much trouble for us! What has been the most memorable wedding you’ve hosted so far? It was a country-style wedding
where the bride had specially requested for our horses to be involved in the photography session. They both behaved like perfect gentlemen for the photos which turned out to be absolutely stunning! What do you love most about the Wide Bay Burnett region? It’s the perfect lifestyle location – we ride our horses around the wide and peaceful roads, enjoy only a 10 minute commute to town and have access to the best local produce for the Bed and Breakfast as well as all the big city comforts right at our doorstep. Finish this sentence: My top tip for a lasting marriage is... to notice something that you appreciate about each other every day and say “thank you” to your love for those special things. www.standysrest.com.au PHOTO | KIRSTY JOY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE PIERS OF HERVEY BAY DESTINATION DESTINATIONS LOVE
Hervey Bay’s piers are iconic. Whilst picturesque and loaded with history, the piers also serve as backdrops of cherished memories: proposals, family holidays, fishing stories about ‘the one that got away’, weddings and even moments taken for granted like early morning walks and watching sunsets with loved ones. Located in Scarness, Urangan and Torquay, they are a defining feature of the seaside town with the Urangan Pier even stretching out an impressive 860 metres into the ocean towards Fraser Island. Up close, the imperfections - weathered boards, cracking paint, rusty nails peaking their heads up - of the piers are plentiful. But take a few steps back and it become clear that the ‘flaws’ only add to the charm of these structures. Their flowing lines and strong foundations have a way of drawing you in, and when perched on their edge above the calm, turquoise waters, a whole new perspective of the shoreline is gained. It is no wonder lovers, young and old, and photographers alike find themselves nestled amongst a pier’s railings or pylons sharing a moment or capturing it. WORDS | ROXANNE SPIES

FRASER ISLAND DESTINATIONS
Fraser Island is a destination that needs to be experienced to be understood; it is romantic, adventurous, and wild yet serene. Visitors travel great distances just to experience the wonders of the world’s largest sand island and locals hold it close to their hearts. Stretching for 123 kilometres and spanning 166,000 hectares, this island retreat lies off the coast of Hervey Bay in south east Queensland, just waiting to be discovered. With a personality that is largely incomparable to other island

getaways, Fraser Island offers so much more than cocktails and spectacular sunsets. It is a trove of wonders just waiting to be explored by those who enjoy rugged landscapes and natural charm. For the more intrepid explorers, the good news is that you can walk to almost any attraction on the island. Self-guided and ranger-guided walking tours are available with trails snaking through dense rainforests and bushland, bypassing spectacular viewing platforms and a unique array of flora and fauna.
If you prefer to travel by car, 4WD tracks have been cleared by staff with the intent of causing very little damage to the natural landscape. The result is incredible; enormous canopies formed by ancient trees envelop the untouched environment evoking the feeling of another world. The terrain can be challenging to navigate but the journey is rewarding with its sights and sounds. Fraser Island can be reached by boat from River Heads in Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. Barges leave daily transporting tourists
and vehicles to the island. Many camp but if you prefer modern comforts there are a number of accommodation options. If seeking a picturesque backdrop for a funcion, wedding reception or romantic getaway, you cannot go past Kingfisher Bay Resort. The resort nestles perfectly into the natural landscape and is an architectural marvel.
is infamous for wrecking ships despite the implementation of lighthouses at Sandy Cape and nearby Woody Island. ‘The Maheno’ shipwreck is a big attraction with its rusting frame providing some magnificent photo opportunities. It is located near The Pinnacles – spectacular sand cliffs that shimmer with multitudes of glassy hues.
There is so much to see and do on this magnificent island. A heavenly beach highway (75mile Beach) stretches along the eastern side with plenty of sites to stop at along the way. The island
The big drawcard for the island is the crystal blue water of Lake McKenzie. A sprinkling of natural lakes and creeks can be accessed from anywhere on the island – it just depends where
you want to go! World Heritage Listed Fraser Island is special to so many. Its beauty is unmatched and its the backdrop for memories; holidays with family, adventures with a lover, an escape from reality. SAMANTHA & ANTHONY REAL LOVE - WEDDING | 12th MARCH 2016 | TAKURA An intimate gathering in the rustic atmosphere of Purnella Park set the scene for the wedding of Fraser Coast couple Samantha and Anthony. With a desire for simplicity and a natural feel, Purnella Park provided the perfect location for their special day and ensured it was everything they dreamed of and more. Sam and Anthony’s love story began after meeting at an Australia Day beach gathering in 2011. Their first date was fish and chips on the beach and some time later in a similar beachside location this was also their meal of choice when Anthony surprised Sam with his marriage proposal. Not believing him at first, Sam asked him if he was serious six times before realising he had a ring in his hand!
When planning the decorating for their wedding, Sam and Anthony chose a minimalist vibe with splashes of navy, white lace and timber accents. They credit Kerry from ‘Now and Forever’ as helping their vision become reality. Sam’s dress was a divine ivory sweetheart gown with intricate beading and lace detailing. She felt it was just perfect for her, and seeing Anthony’s face as she walked down the aisle in the dress is one of her most precious memories of the day. These memories, and many more, were superbly captured by local photographer Jessica Gunn. Sam and Anthony actually changed their wedding date to ensure that Jessica was available to do their photos and they were not disappointed. Sam described Jessica as an
amazing photographer and beautiful person who is worth every cent and more. After spending a week honeymooning in Melbourne, Samantha and Anthony returned home to the Fraser Coast to renovate their bathroom. Upon reflecting on their special day, the newlyweds have these words of wisdom for other couples planning their wedding... “Choose your bridal party carefully, as you will need these people every step of the way... Most importantly, take a few minutes to stop and take it all in with your new husband/ wife – it really is the best day of your life and it goes by so quickly.” WORDS | BEC ALBOUZE

KYLIE & JAMES REAL LOVE - WEDDING | 20th NOVEMBER 2015 | FRASER ISLAND You know you’ve found that someone special when you feel an “instant connection”. Kylie and James met at a local pub and were lucky enough to experience just that. Together they organised a relaxed, ‘tropical’ wedding on Fraser Island, eager to give their guests an experience to be remembered. The wedding planning began soon after a breathtaking overseas proposal - a day Kylie cites as being one of the best days of her life. “We were holidaying in Hawaii and decided to go on a hike to the top of these cliffs overlooking the coast. We reached the top and discovered we were the only ones up there. The view was incredible and while I was admiring it, James got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.”
The couple settled on Fraser Island as the location for their wedding and reception because they had spent so many wonderful, memorable times there together. Kylie also wanted it to be an opportunity for friends and family. “It is a beautiful place and with many of our guests coming from interstate we thought it might be a chance for them to visit somewhere they have never been.” Kylie and James were married on Sunset Beach beneath a perfectly styled macrame arbour with palm leaves and orchids. The styling theme of simple elegance with a relaxed beach vibe was applied to every detail from the ceremony, to the outfits, the music and reception.
as I’m not a big fan of public speaking, but I got through it after a few tears and I’m so glad that we did it,” said Kylie. “I feel that it made the ceremony more intimate and special.” The joyous day really hit its peak at the reception. Kylie and James were reunited with their guests, some of whom they had not seen for a very long time. “We could finally relax, eat, drink and dance with all our family and friends. It was very special to have all of them there to celebrate with us.” And celebrate they did. WORDS | ROXANNE SPIES

ASH & DAN REAL LOVE - WEDDING | 23rd JANUARY 2016 | MARYBOROUGH Maryborough couple Ash and Dan knew from the very start they wanted their families and loved ones to be at the heart of their big day. “The wedding day is a special day for the bride and groom, and also for the families on both sides” Ash reflected. So it’s not surprising their guest list was extensive, marrying in front of 300 loved ones at the same Church where Ash’s parents exchanged vows, and hosting a ‘Garden Party’ afternoon tea reception for 215. Meeting through mutual friends, Dan proved to be quite the romantic and his proposal was the stuff movies are made of. “I bought a scrapbook album and printed out lots of photos of us together from the day we started going out until a couple of days before I proposed. We placed them all in date order. We got to halfway through
the book and there were no more pictures left to place inside. I said to Ash, ‘We’ve made many good memories together so far, and there’s lots of room for more’.” Dan then got down on one knee and asked Ash, “Will you make more memories with me?”. Swoon. When it came to choosing a wedding dress, Ash never imagined herself in a “princess dress”. However, she spotted a beautiful gown and decided to try it on. “It had sparkles on the bodice with an illusion back and a tulle skirt. I put it on and walked out of the dressing room... my Mum started crying and I knew instantly it was ‘the one’.” Taking a DIY approach to as many things as possible and involving family with the catering ensured the couple got the big wedding of their dreams
that still felt intimate, relaxed and personal. “Anything that we could make ourselves, or ask someone to help with, we did. Dan is really good with graphic design and I’m quite arty so we made all the invitations with help from friends and bridesmaids.” Ash’s step-father took charge of the flower arrangements for the reception and friends and family helped with catering. Ash and Dan are true believers in not sweating the small stuff when it comes to your wedding day. “Focus on the main idea of what you want rather than stressing about the small details”. And what was Dan’s favourite part of the day? “Seeing Ash walk down the aisle all dressed up and with the biggest smile was definitely the highlight!” WORDS | ROXANNE SPIES

CLAIRE & THOMAS REAL LOVE - WEDDING | 1st APRIL 2016 | HERVEY BAY When you simply cannot wipe the smile off your face on your wedding day, you know you’ve found something pretty special. Seriously, have you seen a happier couple than Claire and Thomas? “Tommy and I have a lot of fun. We make each other laugh every day.” Married in Hervey Bay, their wedding was rustic, intimate and fun. “I didn’t stop smiling and laughing all day!” Tom affectionately recalls. Claire and Thomas met at a music festival in Brisbane and on their six year anniversary, Thomas enticed Claire to the beach under the guise of celebrating the special occasion with a picnic. Claire was surprised! “I was sitting on the beach, relaxing, and Tommy was off playing with Zeus, our new puppy. Zeus then came running towards me with a little suit on and a new collar. The collar had
two dog tags on them – one saying ‘Will you’ and the other saying ‘Marry Me’. Of course I said yes.”
so I was a little nervous to tell Tommy. I told him it would be worth it... on the wedding day he said it definitely was!”
Thomas had always wanted to be married by the beach and Claire grew up in Maryborough, so the choice to marry in Hervey Bay was an easy one. “We thought it was the perfect place that represented both of us.” Their ceremony was held at Dayman Park and a reception at The Waterfront Restaurant followed and Thomas and Claire could not have been happier with it. “Nat from the Waterfront was amazing and just took care of everything.”
The couple was conscious with their budget and credit the location as the key to being able to stick to a budget without sacrificing quality. “By having our wedding in Hervey Bay rather than Byron Bay or the Sunshine Coast it really helped with maintaining our set budget. We didn’t compromise quality at all and we got more for our money.”
Seeing Claire walk down the aisle took Thomas’ breath away. Like many brides, Claire tried on many gorgeous gowns but none of them were ‘the one’. “But as soon as I put this one on it just felt right. It was over budget
Whilst their wedding day may be over, Claire and Thomas still have their honeymoon to look forward to later in the year. “Tommy is finishing his Masters so we thought we would wait until we could completely relax!” WORDS | ROXANNE SPIES

HAYLEY & ANDREW REAL LOVE - WEDDING | 19th SEPTEMBER 2015 | CHILDERS Not many couples can credit mosquitoes for bringing them together, but that’s how the love story began for Bundaberg newlyweds Andrew and Hayley McKay. Having worked together in Gayndah as a travelling Physio and Occupational Therapy team, and being part of the same social circle for some time, Hayley jokes, “I was worried we were stuck in the dreaded ‘friend-zone’”. All it took was a camping trip ‘mosquito attack’ that had Andrew ditching his swag for Hayley’s insect-proof tent and the rest is history. After spending two years living in London together, it was during a trip to Cinque Terre in Italy that Andrew proposed overlooking the cliffs, drinking local wine and eating cheese. Perfection! Andrew and Hayley married in a vintage country ceremony at Lake Redbrook Holiday Retreat
outside Childers. With friends and family spread across the country and internationally, Andrew and Hayley wanted somewhere their guests could come to and stay for a few days to be able to catch up properly. Lake Redbrook Holiday Retreat proved to be the perfect venue for their festivities with campfires and group meals over the wedding period providing the ideal opportunity to share stories and create new memories. The reception was decorated by the couple themselves and truly was a labour of love. Andrew and Hayley spent the months prior to the wedding creating signs, table discs and decorating jars meaning that everything on the day had a very personal touch. They also saved money through choosing a private function room where they could
buy and serve their own drinks. The talented Katey’s Captures Photography documented every aspect of the day. “Having family and friends from all parts of our lives in one venue, at once, was amazing! We also really enjoyed the photo session where we had time to enjoy “the moment”, and the speeches were all very entertaining”. After honeymooning for a week skiing in Queenstown, New Zealand, Andrew and Hayley have settled in Bundaberg. Their advice to couples planning their wedding is “...to find a location that feels right and go for it, and always have a ceremony rehearsal with your celebrant!” WORDS | BEC ALBOUZE

SWEET SUCCULENTS TRENDS TO TRY | THE ECO-FRIENDLY TREND THAT LIVES LONG AFTER THE WEDDING DAY
102
Succulents are popping up everywhere in the world of weddings. They come in a variety of unique shapes, textures, and fun colors so it’s no wonder brides are adding them to their bouquets, centrepieces, cakes, wedding favours and boutonnieres. Ranging in colour from different shades of pink, green, purple and grey, they suit any theme and look gorgeous mixed with other blooms.
Succulents have a knack of making bouquets look plumper and more petal-heavy, just by being themselves. If you’re after a bold statement, why not ditch other flowers altogether? There won’t be a wilting flower in sight. Best of all, succulents are eco-friendly. These dainty yet hardy plants are easy to replant so they can be treasured long after your big day is done and dusted. What’s not to love?

ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT Stressed about what to wear for your engagement photos? It’s so important that you are comfortable and stay true to your own style. A neutral colour palette is always a great place to start; it’s timeless and neutral colours pretty much suit everyone. Keen to brighten things up? Start with a neutral base and add pops of one or two vibrant colours.
TIPS: GO FOR SUBTLE COLOUR COORDINATION (AND DON’T BE AFRAID OF PATTERNS). KEEP THE TONES SIMILAR WITHOUT GOING FULL MATCHY-MATCHY. CONSIDER A STANDOUT PIECE AN ITEM OF JEWELLERY, GREAT PAIR OF SHOES OR HAT. THE KEY IS TO CHOOSE JUST ONE! DRESS FOR YOUR LOCATION AND ACTIVITY. KEEP YOUR OUTFITS SMART BUT PRACTICAL!

ROSE PETAL CONFETTI The tradition of throwing confetti over the bride and groom is making quite the comback. What has disappeared however is the paper and rice confetti of years gone by and gorgeous fresh or freeze-dried rose petals have taken centre stage. Petal confetti is completely biodegradable and venue-friendly (and it looks incredible in photos)! Keen to keep costs down? Save money by making your own. Not feeling the love? If you’re not keen on cleaning up, or are getting married at a venue that doesn’t allow confetti of any kind, give bubbles a go! They are cheap, your guests will love blowing them and the photos will be ah-mazing.

THE LOST OPPORTUNITY OPINION | IT’S ABOUT TIME WE GAVE THE GROOM A LITTLE MORE LOVIN’
I’ll admit it, I’m ‘that’ guy. They announce the bride at the beginning of the ceremony, everybody stands and stares eagerly towards the entrance of the bride. It’s the perfect opportunity for the photographer; a chance to capture the raw emotion on everyone’s faces as the entourage, the dress and most importantly the bride first graces the presence of everyone YEP, I’M ‘THAT’ GUY in attendance. What newly RUINING THE PHOTO married couple wouldn’t want WITH THE BACK OF this memory documented in their album?
MY HEAD. AT THE START OF EVERY WEDDING I PREFER TO FACE THE FRONT AND CAPTURE A DIFFERENT MOMENT IN TIME: THE GROOM’S FACE.
Then there’s me. Yep, I’m ‘that’ guy ruining the photo with the back of my head. At the start of every wedding I prefer to face the front and capture a different moment in time: the groom’s face. The moment a bride walks in, the groom is forgotten. You may disagree but honestly, when was the last time you said, ‘Isn’t he handsome, I need to take a photo of the groom,’ when the bride made her debut? If you said ‘all the time’, we all know you’re lying. I got married when I was 21. My wedding was one of the first weddings I had been to. I remember the exact moment I saw my beautiful wife for the first time on our wedding day. I remember every single strand of hair around her face. I remember her exact expression. I remember her scent as she approached me. And I remember precisely how I felt. I couldn’t breathe. I struggled to get the air into my body. I felt light headed and trembly. I was crying and as I looked around at our guests they were crying too. My bride and her father were uncontrollably tearful. I felt something I had never felt before and to this day haven’t felt since. It was
a ‘something’, a something that no one else got to witness. It was a lost opportunity and is now a moment in time engrained only in my memory. I’ve wondered ever since if my emotion on the day was an anomaly or if this was a universal feeling overshadowed by the entrance of the bride. To satisfy my own curiosity I have turned around at every ceremony since to look back at the groom. I am not alone. My brother-in-law needed several tissues for his eyes and required reassurance from me, his best man, that he was ok. One of my mates kept smiling and giggling uncontrollably whilst doing an odd, nervous jig. Another of my friend’s sucked in those oxygen molecules like it was his last breath on Earth. Each groom may express themselves differently but there is one true similarity: their emotions are organic, genuine and absolute. Embrace this opportunity to see even the most testosterone filled XY chromosome human being alive show you that they are real. Society likes to say that males are defunct of any display of emotion. Anyone who has observed the groom at the beginning of a ceremony can easily challenge this psychology. I dare you to be like me. Turn around and put your focus on the other 50%. I’m not saying that the attention needs or should be taken away from the bride; I think what I’m trying to say is that it takes two people to get married so divide your personal spotlight equally across both parties. And that’s why I like to ruin photos and be ‘that’ guy. I’ll admit, it may be selfish of me but at least I get to observe a finite moment that everyone else oversees: the lost opportunity. BUCKING TRADITION OPINION | NOVELTY STRAWS AND GAMES NOT YOUR THING? DON’T FRET. HENS PARTY TRENDS ARE NOW AS DIVERSE AS THE BRIDES-TO-BE THEY’RE HONOURING.
Is a traditional wild hens night not your cup of tea? Or perhaps you’re lusting after a Magic Mike style evening but are reconsidering since Nanna is going to be in attendance (note: awkward). Whatever the reason, do not despair. Hens ‘parties’ are now as diverse as the bridesto-be they honour. From pamper parties, HENS PARTIES, WHATEVER pole dancing, high THEY ENTAIL, SHOULD teas, and a day at BE MEMORABLE. the races, to cooking classes, life-drawing BUCK TRADITION, OR and workshops of all TOTALLY EMBRACE IT... kinds - there’s so much choice! One trend I’ve seen pop up frequently on my social media feeds is flower crowns. So, when I saw that The Studio in Maryborough was hosting a flower crown workshop, I couldn’t resist... And guess what? I loved it. The two hour workshop
was run by Mandi Jedovnicky, florist and designer from The Flower Pod. All the materials and flowers were provided and Mandi was on hand to help when needed. After a quick demonstration, we began. I’ll admit, I was concerned I was going to end up with a less-than-Instagram-worthy crown at the end of it, but looking around the table it quickly became clear that was impossible and we’d all look like queens at the end. Relaxing with a group of friends, getting creative, drinking champagne and leaving with a gorgeous flower crown sounded like a glorious idea. And it was. Hens parties, whatever they entail, should be memorable. Buck tradition or totally embrace it, or do a little of both (sipping cocktails with a Channing Tatum look-a-like while wearing your flower crown anyone?). The point is to do what you want to do and have fun doing it. WORDS | ROXANNE SPIES PHOTOS | ROCKIE CREATIVE
