Notre Dame’s Christmas baskets campaign marks 75 years JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com This Christmas will be an extra special one for the students and staff members at Notre Dame High School in the Upper Beach. This holiday season, the all-girls secondary school on Malvern Avenue is celebrating 75 consecutive years of helping less fortunate families through its annual Christmas hampers campaign. The program, which was started back in 1941 and has served hundreds if not thousands of families since its inception, is a real community effort that involves the whole school community, including current students and staff members as well as graduates, former staff members, former parents, and friends of the school and local parishes. "It’s been a tradition that’s been handed down from generation to generation. Every staff member
and every student contributes in some way," said Sandy Soave, who has overseen the program for five years. "Sisterhood is big at Notre Dame and this is one way we don’t just talk about it, but live it by being there for people who are going through a rough time. It’s important for Notre Dame to help people out." Soave also said because the program is anonymous, what makes it even more moving is that students may not even realize they’re helping out some of their own classmates. This year, students from Margaret McGrath’s Grade 12 business class provided clothing, age-appropriate gifts, and food to a family of six including mom, dad, a three-year-old boy, a 5year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old girl. "It’s emotional and rewarding because we’re helping people in need. It doesn’t take much effort to

Fellow classmate Patricia Altobello said the Christmas baskets program at her school is one of her favourite parts of the
holiday season. "I feel everyone should do what they can to help so others can have a special Christmas," she added. Anika Miller, who is also in Grade 12, said the campaign is meaningful to her because it’s not only about giving to others, but

it also gets students and teachers at the school working together for a great cause. "It really gets everybody in the Christmas spirit and the giving mood," she said. Classmate Jessie Dugayo agreed. "During the process, I
felt like we were Santa’s elves. It’s our duty to bring joy to the families," she smiled. "It’s a whole-school effort." Maria Patrick, who is in Grade 11, said the program is a great way to introduce new students to Notre Dame’s school spirit and sisterhood while reaching out to others, while Grade 10 student Grace Simone said it’s also a lot of fun to collect gifts and food items for the family. She said she especially enjoyed wrapping the gifts. The number of families Notre Dame serves through its Christmas baskets campaign varies each year depending on the number of homeroom classes at the school in the fall semester. Recipients are selected from the St. Vincent de Paul chapter at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church as well as within the school community, including current and former students.

TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Helena Kirk doesn’t want your pity or admiration, she wants your help saving her friends’ lives. The 11-year-old East York resident and cancer survivor is an ambassador for the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), and was recently named the 2016-2017 Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child presented by Walmart. She can be seen in the new SickKids VS campaign, the hospital’s biggest and boldest campaign yet. "People are like, ’Wow, you survived, you’re so great, wow,’" Kirk told Metroland Media Toronto. "And I’m like no, I’m nothing compared to my friends who are still fighting right now. I am nothing compared to them." It’s that fighting spirit that Helena is thrilled to see embodied in the VS campaign. "I love it," she said of the campaign. "It’s so fierce, and it really does show how all these children are fighting. It’s like a big war ground of SickKids, and the kids, and the medicine against the sickness, and the pain and the suffering." Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at three years old, Helena underwent daily chemotherapy treatments for 841 consecutive days. After the two-and-a-half years of daily chemo, she was monitored closely for another two-and-a-half years before being declared cancerfree. Though she has lingering effects from her battle, including muscle and nerve damage, she’s an avid martial artist and swimmer. She loves Pokemon and comic book superheroes, and
wants to be a veterinarian one day. Thanks to the life-saving care she received at SickKids, she has the chance to see that dream through. Helena’s mom Sarah agreed the VS campaign really hits the mark. "When we were told the concept of the new commercial all of us were like yes, that’s exactly it. It’s tough, it’s gritty, it’s powerful, it’s strong. It’s not weak, it’s not pitiful, it’s not sad," said Sarah. "Of course there are sad moments, but even some of the kids that we know that passed, the strength, and courage and bravery they showed was staggering. It was still strong even though they lost their battle. "Some of the bravest, strongest, toughest people I’ve ever met are little kids that I met on that eight floor at SickKids," she added. "To me, when I hear children have cancer, I don’t think of weak. I think of this strong, tough little warrior that puts a smile on their face and has fun in spite of everything they’re going through." SickKids helped Helena stay positive throughout her medical journey. Between the hard times, she said there would always be joy. "The doctors and nurses, they are amazing. They’re so nice and friendly, you just can’t help but feel like they’re family now. And there would always be like clowns and stuff, and there’s two playrooms that I would always go to, and those ones I really liked. It was just an overall fun place for a three-and-a-half year old to run around," she shared. "If everybody wasn’t so welcoming and friendly, and there wasn’t anything good, then the memories

Cancer is the No. 1 killer of
children by disease. Only injuries claim the lives of more Canadian children.
"One in five children will die from their cancer (within five years)," Helena noted. "I just want people to know that it’s OK to say, ’Oh, I feel so bad for them. I sympathize and I wish they get better.’ But it’s even better to make sure that happens by fundraising. Every little bit helps." As a Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child, Helena will attend events and deliver speeches advocating for the children’s hospital network and SickKids Hospital, the beneficiary of funds raised locally through the network. She will also travel to Florida in March for a conference with all the 20162017 Champion Child titleholders from throughout North America. A child is chosen to represent each hospital in the network. During speeches, Helena uses her bravery beads to help show what children fighting cancer go through. At SickKids, decorative beads are given to children each time they undergo a procedure and also when they show exceptional courage. Helena has more than 600 beads marking transfusions, spinal taps, the surgical implantation of a titanium port in her chest, losing her hair which happened twice - and much, much more. "It just reminds me of how fortunate I am that I don’t have to go through all of these procedures and stuff, that I’m cancer-free," she said of her beads. "But it also reminds me that we need more research for the children who are still going and adding to their strings." Don’t ruin your life, or the lives of others, by driving drunk The holidays are a time of year for family gatherings, evenings out with friends and reminiscing about the year that was, and looking ahead to what might come. With every story shared of dreams fulfilled, or those that remained just out of reach, alcohol may be a regular companion at the table. Catching up over a bottle of wine isn’t uncommon during the holidays, but what shouldn’t become common is getting behind the wheel after an evening of drinking - now, or at any time of year. MADD Canada reports that accidents involving alcohol and/or drugs are the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Its website reports that in 2012, there were 2,546 crash deaths. Of those, 1,497 involved drivers who had some alcohol or drug presence in their system. That works out to almost 60 per cent of people who knowingly turned the key in the ignition after consuming alcohol or drugs. But that doesn’t have to be the case. There is enough education and awareness about the dangers of drunk or drugged driving that there’s no excuse to get behind the wheel impaired. The human cost is staggering; innocent people’s lives changed in an instant, without their consent. The financial cost to all parties involved can be catastrophic; draining their savings and in some cases, losing their homes because of court costs or stacking medical bills. The Toronto Police Service, along with 16 other police services across the province, launched its annual holiday R.I.D.E. campaign last month. Toronto police are out every night until after the new year holding spot checks at various locations across the city – working to keep you safe. But drivers have a responsibility. Pay for the long cab ride, take Uber, arrange for a designated driver or call someone you trust to pick you up. Making arrangements to enjoy yourself, but not taking the unnecessary risk of getting in the driver’s seat impaired, is the best gift you can give yourself this holiday season. If you’re heading out to celebrate the start of 2017, Corby Spirit and Wine is partnering with the TTC to offer complimentary rides home for revelers. There are options everywhere. No good time is worth driving impaired.

Industrial buildings tempt the faithful, despite city crackdown Toronto is a place of religious freedom, but isn’t a friendly place for religious groups which lack a lot of patience and money. If you want to start a church, mosque, or temple, and you don’t want to rent space in another religious institution, your options are limited. Building a place of worship takes plenty of time and cash. If you don’t have that, you’re more likely to do something foolish, such as moving into an old warehouse or factory. On a stretch of Birchmount Road in Scarborough, the city shut down a Hindu temple last month. The Canada Kanthaswamy Temple Society held services in a warehouse for years, temporarily, while its home on the same street
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto is being rebuilt. The Sakinah Centre opened a mosque and private school in an industrial building two doors away from that warehouse. More than 100 children attended the school before it suddenly shut down, and the mosque with it, in January. Both buildings were served with orders branding them "unsafe" - both lacked fire safety systems required for places of wor-

ship and schools - but the city also acted because they were in an employment area it wants to save. Michael Thompson, chairperson of Toronto’s Economic Development Committee, says the city is not picking on any religious groups, but Sakinah and Canada Kanthaswamy both ignored the city’s warnings about improper zoning. "A lot of folks are just not wanting to follow the rules." Part of the problem is this industrial part of Birchmount is already dotted with places of worship and private schools, as are many employment zones across the city. Seeking to stop a trend, the city clamped down in 2013 with a new bylaw,
though it seems it sometimes takes inspectors years to find and act against new places of worship existing where they shouldn’t. To leaders of religious institutions struggling to find an affordable building - and who perhaps received bad advice - this must look awfully unfair, and empty industrial real estate awfully tempting. But what about those believers who scraped together the donations, the money for lessons? Where can they go now? Edges of Toronto is a column about how people see life in Toronto differently, depending on where they live. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Toronto Police came to Rivertowne area Monday evening, to hear residents’ hopes and fears about a community that has been torn apart by gun violence in recent months. Staff Sgt. Saleem Husain of 55 Division’s Community Response Unit provided an update on the unsolved murder of 24-yearold Marcus Gibson, who police believe was targeted inside his own Munro Street home on Sunday, Nov. 27. Husain also told the group of 50-plus neighbours about a number of special projects officers from 55 Division are doing to address and curb crime issues in east Toronto most recently "Project Comfort," which has led to a greater around-the-clock police presence in Rivertowne. "Rivertowne is not an unsafe community despite
some very violent, tragic events," Husain said, noting since May 1 his officers have devoted more than 6,000 hours of their time to the neighbourhood. Local Councillor Paula Fletcher was also on hand. "I think we all realize there are families in Rivertowne who will be having a difficult Christmas," she said. "It is very disturbing for everyone. It’s not how we want to live our lives. We need to build a stronger community and get the guns out of Rivertowne." On Tuesday, Nov. 29, two days after 24-year-old Marcus Gibson was gunned down in the eastend Toronto housing complex and three months after grandmother Peggy Ann Smith was fatally shot, the city’s community development and recreation committee approved a proposal by Fletcher to create a task force to address gun violence in the former Don Mount Court

Ward 30 councillor Paula Fletcher chats with officers from 55 Division during a community meeting on safety issues in Rivertowne. neighbourhood. Over the next three to six months, this high-level working group, whose members include Deputy Chief of Police Mike Federico, the CEO of Toronto Community Housing, the City Solicitor, representa-
tives from the City Manager’s office, Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell, and Fletcher, will be working to evaluate strategies currently in place to deal with the ongoing violence in Rivertowne: safety, management and engagement
strategies for tenants, and legal strategies that might include eviction policies. The strategy that comes out of that process would serve as a model to be used in other traumatized communities within the Toronto Community Housing
Corporation. "Residents are really the most important resource for the effort of this working group to be successful," Fletcher said, adding it’s time to "take back the community and build a stronger, safer neighbourhood." One woman said a "critical stakeholder" is missing from the working group: residents, especially young people who best understand the neighbourhood’s dynamics and can help identify and address the root causes of the its gun violence. Neighbour Joan King, who founded the Rivertowne Safety 1st group, expressed concerns about inadequate lighting and the need for more security cameras to be installed in the right places in Rivertowne. She also spoke about the pressing need to get the guns out of the city on a wider level as the gun problems aren’t just isolated to her neighbourhood.

While one might gently point that death comes for some of us every year, it’s hard not to see that in 2016, the reaper cast an unusually long shadow, at least against the glare of public light. Toronto was not spared. In March, former Mayor and City Councillor Rob Ford succumbed to the cancer he had been battling since 2014. Arguably the most famous politician that Toronto has ever produced, and also one of the most divisive, Ford’s passing - and the opulent public viewing and funeral - was impossible for any Toron-

tonian, grieving or otherwise, to ignore. And when it was done, Toronto finished the first year in a long time that was not defined by its relationship with Ford and his particular, and very powerful, kind of populism. The late former mayor’s nephew Michael Ford moved into his city council seat in Ward 2 (Etobicoke North). But the sharp, populist critique from a former mayor who had promised to run again and might well have

won if he had . that was gone. Its absence seems to have made at least some difference. Just last week, Mayor John Tory and Toronto Council moved forward with only minimal fuss, to look at a revenue tool that would have turned into a Ford-fed bonfire a year earlier: road tolls, on the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. This fall, council supported looking at a billion-dollar-plus rail deck park. There are bike lanes - bike lanes! - on Bloor Street. Some of these things may well have come forward with Rob Ford sitting on council. As it stands, while 2016 was a cruel year for too many – for Toronto’s political leadership, at least for a time, it was uniquely unconstrained.

Like many, three-year Beach resident Kim Crowley misses the magical atmosphere at Kew Gardens at this time of the year. "It was all here. There were lots of big trees. Christmas music was blaring. It was awesome," she said during an interview at the park’s recently renovated north end. Crowley is referring to the Toronto Beaches Lions Club’s Christmas tree lot, which after 25 years has been relocated to Woodbine Beach. "For the last two years, we’ve enjoyed buying a real tree from the Lions at Kew Gardens," said Crowley, who along with her husband Trevor and threeyear-old daughter Kate made it an annual tradition. "It’s not quite the same experience this year." Club secretary Andy Buhot said the Lions "aren’t too thrilled" either with the move. "It was such a wonderful tradition in the community. It just doesn’t seem like the holidays (without our lot at Kew Gardens)," he told The Beach Mirror, adding the Lions have also heard from several disappointed community members. "We appreciate the city’s efforts to accommodate us, but I think the orig-

That disappointment prompted Crowley to start a Change.org petition titled "Bring the Lions Club Christmas tree lot back to Kew Gardens for next year" just over two weeks ago. So far, more than 200 people have signed the petition, which she plans to deliver to the office of Ward 32 Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon among others "Everyone seems to miss the Christmas tree lot at Kew Gardens. Everyone is wondering where it went," she said. In an email to The Beach Mirror, Waterfront Parks Manager James Dann said Lions were given two years notice about the move and said they made an effort to

offer them an alternate location nearby. "(We’re) well aware that the local community was supportive of the Christmas trees, however the past practice of driving vehicles on the square caused substantial damage in and around the cenotaph," Dann said, noting this decision is in no way connected to any other lease holder read George Foulidis within the parks system. As part of this redesign, the city is also no longer permitting commercial activity at Kew Gardens, which reopened to the public shortly before Remembrance Day. Councillor McMahon is out of town this week and was unavailable to speak with The Beach Mirror.

A new holiday tradition is coming to Toronto’s east end. For several years, Little India-area residents Rob Torr and Stephanie Graham have wanted to bring a pantomime production to their community. This year, the husband and wife team’s dream has become a reality as their company, Torrent Productions, is producing "Robin Hood: A Merry Magical Pantomime" by playwright Caroline Smith. "I have wanted to do a pantomime for about 10 years and we just think it’s time. We spend so much time away from home doing shows elsewhere and we just wanted to do something for our neighbourhood," Torr said during a recent interview. "We’re really excited." Pantomime is a familyfriendly genre of musical
comedy that originated in England back in the Middle Ages. Productions, which are loosely based on children’s fairy tales, fables or folk tales, are usually staged during the holiday season. Audience participation is welcome and encouraged. "I love pantomime because it’s an opportunity for more than one generation to laugh together," Torr enthused. "It’s a wonderful introduction for young theatregoers to experience live." "Robin Hood: A Merry Magical Christmas", which includes lots of hyperlocal references and jokes, runs from Thursday, Dec. 15 to Saturday, Dec. 24 at the Baron Byng Royal Canadian Legion Beaches Branch 1/42, 243 Coxwell Ave. at Gerrard Street East. Performance times vary. Torr and Graham, who have lived in east-end Toronto for 11 years, are also co-directing the two-hour-
long production, which features a notable cast of 10 professional theatre actors including Greg Campbell as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, Al Braatz as Robin Hood, Kevin Aichele as Little John, Stuart Dowling as Nurse Tickle, Ryan Brown as Pinch, Cynthia Hicks as Maid Marian, Matthew Pinkerton as Will Scarlet, Luc Trottier as Friar Tuck, Sacha Stewart as Fred the Fairy, and Cameron Francis as Allan A, Dale. Graham is also choreographing the show. Tickets to "Robin Hood: A Merry Magical Pantomime", which cost $35 for adults and $25 for children under 12, are available for purchasing online at www.brownpapertickets.com, by calling 1-800-8383006 or at the door. The show is recommended for children six and up. Visit www.torrentproduction.com for more information.

DON’T DUMP IT‌ BLUE BOX IT! The simple act of recycling has more impact on the environment than the average Canadian thinks. The amount of wood and paper North Americans throw away each year is enough to heat five million homes for 200 years.
How to do it: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3 by 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9.
