Red Door Family Shelter opens interim location JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Women and children in crisis can once again turn to the Red Door Family Shelter for assistance. On Monday, the Leslieville-based shelter started welcoming families to its interim home at 1430 Gerrard St. E., just west of Coxwell Avenue. "There’s a great need out there, and many families are struggling. We’re happy to be of service again," said executive director Bernnitta Hawkins. Late last year, the Red Door had to move from its longtime home at 875 Queen St. E. at Logan Avenue, as that site is in the process of being redeveloped into a seven-storey, 118-unit mixed-use condominium with a 20,000square-foot, 96-bed permanent shelter for families. get in, get the building ready, and to start accepting residents. It’s all part of our journey," said Hawkins. At the Gerrard Street lo-

cation, there are 100 beds, enough to accommodate about 35 families. Residents will be moving into the shelter’s 22 apartments over the

course of the next month. Some of the units are being used by administrative staff as the main-floor office space is still under renovation. "The apartments are mostly ready for families. By mid-March, all units will be ready to go," said Hawkins, thanking the community for its support. The Red Door Family Shelter expects to remain in its interim location for about three years until its home in Leslieville is ready. In recent weeks, construction crews have taken down the three-storey, circa 1888 Burgess Building at 887 Queen St. E. The bricks from the north and east walls of this historic edifice, Leslieville’s first medical building, will be preserved and incorporated into the new Red Door condo. The structure’s unique fascias, sills and cornices will also be recreated as part of the

new development.The former Woodgreen United Church at 875 Queen St. E. will not be retained. "We’ve started demolition work. Shoring and excavation begins in March," said Chris Harhay, president of Harhay Construction Management Ltd. "We’re on our way, which is really exciting. We’re working towards building the new shelter." Harhay said he’s thrilled to be involved in such an innovative project where a community service element is integrated into a mixed-use condominium development. "It’s really a great model for the city," he said, adding his goal is to build one of the best shelters in Toronto. "I’m most excited about the great space we’re going to create for the women and children of the shelter. I’m very excited about the fact it’s going to become a reality."

Documentary shares stories of neighbourhood’s entrepreneurial families JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com There is no shortage of interesting stories to be told in the Gerrard India Bazaar and longtime east Toronto filmmaker Nina Beveridge wants to hear all about them. For more than a year now, Beveridge and her partner Paul Hart of Beevision Productions have been working to document the eclectic neighbourhood’s history through a film and story-sharing project called Village of Dreams - Tales from the Gerrard India Bazaar. Being developed as part of TVOntario’s Here and Now 150 documentary series for Canada’s 150th anniversary, the cross-platform initiative aims to explore and reflect upon the dreams, desires, and personal journeys of local shopkeepers and their families. "It’s all about the people of the bazaar. What this project is really about is the entrepreneurial families of the Gerrard India Bazaar," said Beveridge, who was born in Bombay, India but has called the Little India area home for 19 years. About a year ago, Beveridge and her team, which includes sound recordist/editor Paul Hart and cinematographer Bongo Kolycius, began the development phase of the Village of Dreams documentary, which explores the themes of fashion, beauty, food and music/ entertainment in the everevolving Gerrard India Ba-

Once completed, Village of Dreams - Tales from the Gerrard India Bazaar will include a one-hour TV documentary that will air on TVO this summer, a 90plus minute version of the film to be submitted to film festivals, and an interactive website that features a series of mini web documentaries as well as pho-

tos and stories from the neighbourhood. The project also includes a vibrant marketing and postering campaign with colourful photographs of people and events in the neighbourhood. To get the community more involved in the Village of Dreams project, Beveridge has launched the "What’s Your Bazaar Memory?" contest. "I really felt there was a shortage of good, archival material that reflected the energy of the bazaar," Beveridge said while discuss-

ing the idea for the contest, which is being put on by Beevision and Village of Dreams Productions in partnership with TVO, the Gerrard/Ashdale Library and the City of Toronto Archives. "I’d like to get things down for the record. That’s what this exercise is all about. It’s all about celebrating the community and encapsulating our stories through photos and the written word." Anyone interested in taking part has until March 31 to submit photos,

and share stories (and videos) that best reflect the neighbourhood’s people, locations, culture, and spirit dating from the late 1970s to the present day. Cash prizes of $500 will be awarded for the best nonfiction story/video and the best photo. Those who submit great photos may also be invited to have their works as part of a permanent collection in the City of Toronto Archives. An independent judging panel will select the winning entries, which will be announced during

this summer’s Festival of South Asia. The winners will be chosen based on their ability to evoke a sense of time and place, their artistic quality, and overall representation of the Gerrard India Bazaar. Black History Month offers window into Canada’s past Toronto was the first municipality in Canada to proclaim February as Black History Month; a month dedicated to commemorating the contributions of AfricanCanadians to our culture and community. That was 38 years ago. It was because of the diligent pressure and persistence of the Ontario Black History Society which succeeded in having the city formally recognize the month - and now it’s proclaimed right across the country. Black History Month is, frankly, Canadian History Month and it’s important we know the compelling facts of our heritage. African-Canadians have struggled for equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination for far too many years. It began with the anti-slavery movement and evolved into the fight for basic civil and human rights. African-Canadian leaders of that time led with courage and determination. They include people like Viola Davis Desmond, a Halifax-born business woman. It was 1946 when she went to the movies in New Glasgow, N.S. while her vehicle was being repaired. She bought a ticket and sat on the main floor - not realizing this theatre had segregated seating. She refused to leave when staff demanded she go to the balcony. She was dragged out by police and spent the night in jail. She was fined $20 and charged and eventually convicted with defrauding the government of one cent - the tax difference between the balcony and main floor seat. Her challenge of the tax evasion charge brought national and international attention and raised awareness of racial segregation in Canada. Desmond was posthumously pardoned in 2010 and next year, she will be the first African-Canadian and first woman, aside from the Queen, to appear on a Canadian bank note. Others led with their entrepreneurial spirit. Carrie Best was the first African-Canadian to own and publish a newspaper. Elijah McCoy invented and patented a type of lubricating cup that dripped oil onto moving parts of a train while in motion. He also invented and patented the first portable ironing board at his wife’s request. African-Canadians have roots which date back to the 1600s. They were soldiers, farmers, writers, newspaper publishers, activists, engineers, athletes, politicians and performers. It’s our wish that future generations will know the history of African-Canadians just as well as any other group or historical event in our country’s timeline. Let’s educate ourselves about the contributions African-Canadians have made to our society - for the better.

Bylaw makes faith groups feel unwelcome When Toronto City Hall’s rotunda filled up last week with the supporters of a Scarborough mosque, people who were watching shrugged. The protest was meant to disrupt a city council meeting, but didn’t. Mayor John Tory was away. The leader of Sakinah Community Centre spoke to some reporters, saying the mayor and city were trying to drive Muslims out of Toronto. Soon enough, everyone went home. But that won’t be the end of it. Just as homes in the city are becoming more unaffordable for families, faith groups, especially those supported by newcomers, are feeling squeezed out too. What brought Sakinah supporters downtown was desperation. The city shut

nah’s imam, Said Rageah, was talking about is economic. He’s arguing the city knows faith groups like his can’t triple their budget to get buildings with commercial zoning. "By banning our places of worship and schools you are telling us to live elsewhere. We will not," he says in a letter to Tory. "This will not end. This is a human rights issue." Sakinah established itself around the time the bylaw took effect, and disagrees with city officials about what happened. Its leadership may have made a big mistake, but after renovating the building, it must fight for it. In the inner suburbs, Sakinah’s choices aren’t unique, and this problem will worsen as more faith

groups come into conflict with the city. Tory says the city will work with the Toronto Real Estate Board "to ensure that other religious groups are informed of where they can legally operate." But reminding real estate agents of their professional standards is not the same as solving the problem. A city which welcomes diversity and protects religious groups must do more for them besides explaining they now need to find much more expensive properties to call home. In a Feb. 3 letter to her constituents, Toronto-Danforth MP Julie Dabrusin said she is thankful and inspired by the insight and involvement of her community on this issue. That being said, Dabrusin said she wanted to see the discussion on electoral reform, specifically proportional representation, move forward. "I understand your disappointment. As your Member of Parliament I recognize that our government will not be fulfilling a commitment made to you in the last election," she wrote. Dabrusin admitted to having some reservations with a recommendation to hold a referendum with both the current and a newly designed system of proportional representation on the ballot. "I worry that if we rushed toward a referendum as recommended by the (Special Committee on Electoral Reform), the goal of changing our voting sys-

tem would not be achieved. If Canadians are going to change the way we vote, we deserve a deliberative process that engages, educates and informs," Dabrusin wrote, adding to do so requires time and resources. "We may not be ready yet, but that does not mean that we won’t be ready soon. I respect the principled and passionate views my community shared with me on changing our electoral system, and I will continue to work with residents and my Ottawa colleagues on this issue." Erskine-Smith, who is a member of Fair Vote Canada, also expressed concerns that a referendum could be "decisive" and may be "overrun by misinformation." "It would cost $300 million if it took place before 2019. And it may well be biased toward the status quo and fail to deliver reform," he wrote. "But it removes the question from politicians with a self-interested stake in any change, and it is better than abandoning reform altogether."

Two Liberal MPs from east Toronto are both disappointed in their government’s decision to abandon electoral reform. In a statement, originally published on the Huffington Post on Feb. 2, Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who has spoken in support of a more proportional voting system, including in the House of Commons, said "democracy should be more representative of where we live." He pointed to conversations he’s had with his constituents about whether or not a party with less than 40 per cent of the popular vote should control all of the power in our democracy. "There is an overwhelming consensus that the answer is "no". Democracy’s legitimacy lies in its authority from the people, and the majority of Canadians are left unrepresented in governments under our current voting system," the local MP wrote. Erskine-Smith also said the government shouldn’t use Canadians’ uncertainty about what kind of electoral system is best to justify breaking its promise. The Beaches-East York representative said he understands it’s not realistic to expect the 2015 election to be the last one under the first-past-the-post system but said walking away entirely from the promise of reform is a mistake and a lost opportunity for change. "To all Canadians who support the promise of reform, and especially to those who supported me and believed in my promise of change throughout both the nomination and general election in Beaches-East York, I am deeply sorry. The TTC’s largest union is undergoing a civil war of sorts. Just last week Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) ejected much of the senior leadership of local shop 113, which represents the vast majority of TTC workers. The list of the ousted includes longtime 113 president Bob Kinnear, who the ATU accuses as the main orchestrator of an effort to split the local from its parent. Kinnear counters the Washington D.C.-based ATU is coercing its Canadian membership for support. He has publicly joined forces with Unifor in an effort to convince his many remaining supporters at 113 to break ranks with their American masters and join the Canadian labour giant instead (full disclosure: the Metroland Media Toronto newsroom is affiliated with Unifor). Of course, little of this inter-labour strife will register with the transit-taking public, if at all, so long as the

Neither will it matter all too much, at least publicly, to TTC management, which has largely refrained from commenting on the situation. And to their credit, both ATU and Unifor have pledged not to disrupt service while the dispute plays out. This is a pivotal year for both 113 and the TTC. Spot drug testing of TTC employees is likely to commence in a matter of months. At the end of the year, the TTC will launch a new customer service process once the Spadina extension opens, which

will see station collectors removed from their booths and dispatched throughout the station. In between, the TTC will launch the first phase of Automatic Train Control (ATC) - the main reason for all those weekend-long subway closures - which will see trains piloted via computer, albeit overseen by a single, human operator. Taken together with the overall trend of declining influence of the labour movement, it’s not hard to see a steady unravelling of the union’s strength. For transit riders facing annual fare increases in part to cover the costs of generous employee wages, this might not be such a bad thing. Police looking for suspect in homicide Toronto police are looking for a male suspect seen running from a fatal shooting early Sunday morning in the east end. The man was spotted fleeing eastbound on Langford Avenue where the incident occurred, in the Pape and Danforth area. He was hooded and dressed in dark clothing and may also have carried a knapsack. Police from 54 Division were summoned to the area just after midnight to find a man with life-threatening injuries. Tyrone Tomlinson, 21, of Toronto, was rushed to hospital where he later died. An investigation was commenced by homicide inspectors. No photographs of the victim were released to the public at the request of Tomlinson’s family.
