Malvern CI student now has 100 pairs JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A Grade 10 student at Malvern Collegiate is using his love for soccer to help others - a continent away. Ben Frolic, who lives in the Upper Beach, has recently started collecting gently used soccer cleats for Football for Good (FFG), Uganda’s only full-time residential youth football academy and scholarship program. Aside from working to discover and develop youth football talent in East Africa’s frontier regions, the organization also works to educate, build character, and give youth, communities and partners global opportunities. "My mom heard about (Football for Good) and told me about it and I was instantly interested in supporting it," Ben, 15, said l See Donations, page 2

during a recent interview. "I love the game and I wondered what I could do to help." Earlier this year, Ben and his mother, Jan, reached out to Adrian Bradbury, the academy’s founder and director, who was more than happy to be at the receiving end of their generosity. "It’s always great when a story touches someone at home and inspires them to act. The dusty fields of northern Uganda make it incredibly difficult for us to get any more than a few months out of our football boots. And buying them, is equally difficult, and ex-
pensive, as we focus our resources on school fees, academic and character support and coaching," Bradbury, a Canadian who founded FFG in 2015, wrote in an email to the Beach Mirror. "This is a region with unlimited potential, with little investment in youth. Ben’s efforts will keep us on the field and keep us moving forward." So far, the east Toronto teen has collected more than 100 pairs of soccer cleats for Football for Good, which is based in Gulu, Northern Uganda, a remote area that is still recovering from a devastating, 20-plus year civil war led by Joseph Kony’s
Lord’s Resistance Army. The footwear is set to be delivered to the war-torn east African nation in August. "It’s incredible. I’m so glad I can be a part of this," said Ben, who is currently taking a break from playing league soccer but continues to play for Malvern’s school soccer team. The local teen’s shoe drive continues until August. Donations of bigger sizes, men’s 7 to 10, are especially needed. For more information about Football for Good, visit http://www.footballfor-good.org/about/. Email jfrolic@womenofinfluence.ca to donate gently used soccer cleats.

Circa 1891 Riverside landmark set to reopen in June JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The developers of the soon-to-open Broadview Hotel are offering a sneak peek of what’s to come at the refurbished Riverside landmark. On Thursday, April 20, Streetcar Developments and Dream Unlimited revealed an interactive virtual tour of the interior of the 126-year-old landmark at Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue. Toronto-based studio Norm Li and the DesignAgency, which is known worldwide for hospitality interiors, collaboratively produced the 360-degree virtual experience, which can be found online at www.thebroadviewhotel.ca. "We’re proud of the thought that’s being put into the design of the Broadview Hotel. The details of each space are remarkable, and we were seeking a captivating way to introduce them to the public before they can experience it firsthand this spring," said Les Mallins, Streetcar Developments’ president, in an April 24 release. In the release, Matt Davis, a founding partner of DesignAgency, said he’s excited to see their designs for the boutique hotel and multi-purpose event space showcased in such an "innovative fashion" and said he hopes the virtual reality tours create a buzz about the "incredible potential" of the iconic 1891 property. The virtual tour starts at the reception desk, which features an art installation surrounding the brass elevator doors. It then continues into the bright lobby cafe and bar, which features a replicated historic wall covering found during the de-
molition of the former Jilly’s Gentlemen’s Club, as well as an 80-seat restaurant. Up one level is the Broadview Hotel’s event venue, Lincoln Hall and Terrace. Originally a theatre, the 3,000-square-foot space can accommodate 150 seated guests and up to 270 people for cocktail receptions. The Romenesque Revival-style building’s rooftop bar and terrace, which offers sweeping views of the Toronto skyline, the Don Valley, and the surrounding neighbourhood, is located on the seventh floor. It features a 100-seat indoor bar surrounded by glass walls and a large pyramid-shaped skylight. One of the designated heritage building’s most unique features is its 440square-foot tower, which
serves as a private dining room that can accommodate 22 seated guests or 30 people for cocktail receptions. With 28-foot-tall vaulted ceilings, this archi-
tectural gem has all of its original interior brickwork. More details about the hotel’s interior and June launch will be announced in the coming weeks.
Reservations are now being accepted for September 2017. Visit www.thebroadviewhotel.ca for more information.

Rush hour traffic tinkering designed to improve commute das, and College streets. New signs advising of the no parking and no stopping regulations are now being installed. When it comes to weekday no-stopping hours, eastbound Queen Street East between Woodbine and Wineva avenues as well as between Carroll Street and Broadview Avenue has been extended from 4 to 6 p.m. to 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Northbound Broadview Avenue between Millbrook Crescent and Danforth Avenue has been extended
from 4 to 6 p.m. to 4 to 6:30 p.m. Eastbound Kingston Road between Glen Manor Drive and Victoria Park Avenue has been extended from 4 to 6 p.m. to 3 to 7 p.m., while westbound Kingston Road between Scarborough Road and Main Street/Southwood Drive has also been extended from 7 to 9 a.m. to 7 to 10 a.m. The city has also introduced several turn prohibition extensions on weekdays.
Motorists are now prohibited from turning left from Kingston Road at Balsam and Silver Birch avenues as well as Glen Manor and Southwood drives, and Winthorpe and Scarborough roads between 7 and 10 a.m. Left turns are also prohibited eastbound from Queen Street East to Broadview Avenue from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and from Queen Street East at Woodbine Avenue during that same period. "Congestion and vari-
able travel times have a significant impact on the quality of life for residents and carry an economic cost to business," the city said in a release earlier this month. "Recent studies have indicated that congestion costs Toronto commuters several billions of dollars annually in travel delays and vehicle operating costs as well as increasing vehicle emissions." These new regulations are part of the Transportation Services Division’s Congestion Management
Strategy, which also includes increasing the number of cameras on streets to better detect problems on key transportation routes, increasing variable-message signs, and enhancing co-ordination of traffic signals. The city expects these changes will help them better respond to changes in traffic conditions and better provide motorists with updates information so they can change routes as necessary. -Joanna Lavoie

A number of changes have been made to peak-period parking and turning left on parts of Queen Street East, east of Parliament Street, as well as along Broadview Avenue and Kingston Road. Earlier this month, the city announced it was taking measures to reduce traffic congestion, and improve the flow of streetcars and other traffic along key corridors. Similar changes have already been made on sections of King, Queen, Dun-

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com An ambitious plan in Toronto’s waterfront will bring about new opportunities for artists, thanks to the creation of a new Artscape facility that will offer equipment, technology, networking, mentoring and more. The Artscape Daniels Launchpad, a $27.3 million project, will help artists and designers develop entrepreneurial skills in the heart of the Daniels Corporation’s City of the Arts. The 30,000-square-foot facility, located at the foot of Lower Jarvis Street, will provide a much-needed boost to the careers of artists and designers. "One thing we wanted to address through our research is ’who’s teaching (artists) to make a living?" said Artscape CEO Tim Jones. "We looked to a number of models from all over and found there

Artscape CEO Tim Jones makes his address during the announcement of the new Artscape Daniels Launchpad to be housed in the Daniels Waterfront-City of the Arts development on Queens Quay East. wasn’t one solution, but we found a lot of different ideas to bring together." Jones noted the new facility will function much like a health club, with members paying dues and
having access to cutting edge technology, costly equipment, training, networking and other benefits. That membership model is currently being developed.
"I truly believe this thing we’re doing here has the potential to be a gamechanger for creative people in the city," he said. On Friday, April 21, the facility was officially
named in honour of a $5.75million funding gift from the John and Myrna Daniels Foundation. Additional funding has come from all three levels of government and other private do-
nors. Don Pugh, vice president of the Daniels Corporation, noted that the Launchpad would be a vital part of the company’s Daniels Waterfront - City of the Arts vision for the East Bayfront. "City of the Arts is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to the arts and ensure artists themselves have a hand in citybuilding," he said. Slated to open in 2018, the new facility will serve as a vital boon to artists, many of whom struggle to eke out a career, but whose work adds vibrancy and opportunity for others within the city. "It’s going to bring together those two things that artists do so fabulously well - create, and create business opportunities," said Spadina-Fort York MP Adam Vaughan. ABOUT US
Amalgamated Toronto remains a work in progress Twenty years ago this month, then-Ontario premier Mike Harris officially introduced the law that would erase the historic municipal borders in Metropolitan Toronto, and create the new city in which we live. To say that Bill 103 was unpopular in the six former municipalities in the 416 area code would be an understatement. When it was all settled, the Progressive Conservative government found itself persona non grata in the new Megacity that they’d built. And for decades afterwards, the residents of North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, York and the old City of Toronto glared suspiciously at one another across the old borders, dreaming of better days long past. It’s not to say that the old, preamalgamation days in Toronto were entirely perfect. There were a lot of nooks and crannies for corruption to hide and flourish in all those little councils. And the relationships between some of those little councils and the larger regional Metropolitan Toronto council led to some absurd bylaws. But if corrupt dysfunction sometimes ruled the day well at least it was our corrupt dysfunction. Communities gathered around common values and a shared urban esthetic had their own accountable municipal governments. If they failed to hold them to account, well, it was on them. When amalgamation descended, that was lost in the Megacity of Toronto. It’s hard to say what’s improved for Torontonians. Amalgamation was sold as a money-saver and a way to cut the size of government. And while there were some savings identified at amalgamation, they were swallowed in the immense cost of amalgamating seven governments, and in the new cost of downloaded services like housing and transit. Amalgamation may well have aided in cleaning up local government, but it took its time. A hotbed of corruption surrounding bad computer leasing deal was uncovered in the early years of the new city, and a public inquiry led to a suite of accountability offices in place to look over councillors’ shoulders - to often good effect. But 20 years later, amalgamation remains a work in progress. We’re getting along better than we had in the beginning, but not all that well - witness the ongoing suburban/urban battles over subways in Scarborough and elevated highways downtown. We’re beginning to get a handle on municipal finance but we still can’t quite balance the cost of our needs with our capacity to raise revenue. To put it another way: Toronto may be grown, but it’s not yet grown up.

Downtown businesses offer the homeless respect In downtown Toronto, on the busiest part of Canada’s busiest street, handing out tickets to homeless people doesn’t work. But respect works. Knowing each street person’s name works. Mark Garner learned that. He wants us, and particularly the city’s business communities, to learn it too. The Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area (BIA) that Garner leads is "the front line support team" for a top tourist destination, a growing neighbourhood getting a flood of people each night. Some stay on the street. New faces appear daily. Garner and his Clean Streets Team - half its members once lived on the street - tell newcomers at
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto Yonge-Dundas Square where to go for clothing, shelter, a sandwich. They recognize familiar people, "the same three guys sitting on buckets with a teddy bear and a cup." They see who’s having a bad week, who needs attention most. It’s like hospital triage, says Garner. Understand the uniqueness of each street person,

approach them with compassion, Garner argues, and "you can then have a different conversation." Garner, who grew up in Scarborough and walked this part of Yonge in the 1970s and 1980s, isn’t trying to gentrify it. He wants social housing, real affordable housing, to be part of every development the city okays, because homelessness isn’t just a downtown problem. The BIA’s infographic, "One Night in Toronto," makes a point: if 5,253 people on a given night wind up in city shelters, jails, or hospitals, that costs us maybe $421,386,000 a night. If they’re in social housing, it’s $34,512 a night. Many street people don’t want housing. Mental illness is one reason.
One man we’ll call Howard was on the street more than 20 years, selling flags and key chains at Yonge and Dundas. Refusing housing, Garner says, was Howard’s right. But after 18 months of work by the BIA and several agencies, plus lots of hand-holding, Howard got clean, and now makes guitars for a living. "You can’t save everyone, but if you tackle them a case at a time, you have more of a chance," says Garner. Imagine if Toronto’s other BIAs committed to pursuing the same plan. Our city could change quickly. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Bathroom designs have come a long way. From the ice creamcolours and wallpaper border applied in the 1980s to the bold and contemporary choices of the 2000s, styles continue to evolve while incorporating the latest materials. This year, consider keeping your design decisions simple. Here are some key trends: Tile: Modern bathrooms commonly feature unique applications of tile, which are popular because they are affordable and versatile. Options include “finger tiles, which can be applied either vertically or horizontally. Colour: Modern baths use a lot of black, white and gray. These moody neutrals are a style hit and can exude luxury and relaxation.

Hospitals forge alliance Partnership will create ’corridor of care’

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Having worked together to meet the health care needs of east Toronto residents for years, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) have signed an agreement that will expand that partnership. The two hospitals have signed a formal agreement that will see staff collaborating on research and care procedures and patients provided with bestin-practice treatment based on which hospital can best meet their needs. Sunnybrook and MGH have paired up for some time, and the recent signing of a strategic alliance agreement allows them to formally create a "corridor of care" where areas of specialization at each hospital will be shared. "Partnerships are possible when connections among people are strong," said MGH president and CEO Sarah Downey. The agreement will focus on a variety of areas of specialization for each hospital, including cardiovascular services, prostate robotics services, respiratory services, pathology and thyroid and thoracic cancer. Given the scarce resources available for health care, the enhanced partnership will allow

Goldring look on. both hospitals to provide better care for patients, said Sunnybrook president and CEO Dr. Barry McLellan. "It’s a way of enhancing the system in the best interests of our patients and a great opportunity to build upon what we already have in place (in terms of collaboration)," he said. McLellan added that hip fracture care was one area where the agreement with MGH would allow his organization to better serve patients. "No organization provides better care or more effective care in that area than Michael Garron Hospital," he said. Downey, meanwhile,
pointed to the specialized care in cardiac catheterization at Sunnybrook as one area where patients at MGH could benefit from the agreement. The agreement calls for the two facilities to explore ways in which they can benefit from one another’s expertise, including through increased collaboration between health care professionals. The hospitals already sometimes share space and have teams that work together, and the strategic alliance will strengthen those bonds. "It used to be, doctors were affiliated with one hospital, but it’s better for patients when there’s more crossover," McLellan said.

volunteers to help maintain a new cherry blossom tunnel that is set to be planted in the coming weeks at Woodbine Beach. McMahon said the project is being made possible thanks to "philanthropic Japanese partners" and
staff from the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation Department. Anyone interested in helping out should contact the local councillor’s office at councillor_mcmahon@toronto.ca or 416-3921376.
