Surfing enthusiasts take to the waves of Lake Ontario year-round

| Beach Mirror | Thursday, May 11, 2017

SURF’S UP! PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN GREAVES Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline. Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events. On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

Volunteers pack hundreds of purses JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A successful monthlong drive in east Toronto that saw new and gently used purses filled with personal hygiene items for vulnerable women has come to an end. On Saturday evening, two dozen volunteers made their way to the basement of Kimbourne Park United Church for a packing party for The Period Purse campaign. In total, volunteers packed 410 purses, which will be distributed to homeless, abused, and impoverished women across Toronto in the coming weeks. Growing Bodies and Minds at 183 Carlaw Ave., Ocean’s Treasure Fish Market at 565 Danforth Ave., Silly Goose Kids at

2054 Danforth Ave., and Curves at 1359 Woodbine Ave. served as the local drop-off points. Karen Bartlett, the owner/manager of Curves, heard about the local drive after reading an article in the East York Mirror and was eager to get involved. "We’re happy to support this great, local cause," she said at the packing party. "East York is a great community. The Period Purse is about women supporting women and that fits perfectly with what we’re all about at Curves." Area residents Rebecca Rabinovitch and Kate Dupuis both came forward to help co-ordinate the east Toronto campaign. "Everyone has just been so on board," said Dupuis, who has since signed on to serve as The Period Purse’s volunteer coordinator. "Kimbourne (Park United Church) said yes right away when we asked to use their space. All of our community partners have been

Kate Dupuis, the co-coordinator of the east Toronto Period Purse drive, prepares personal hygiene items for packing in donated purses. really enthusiastic helpers." Dupuis, who has lived near Danforth and Coxwell

avenues for eight years, said she got involved because she is aware of her privilege and wanted to do

what she could do give back to women in need. "This is something that is so easy to do. It doesn’t take a lot of time or money but it makes a big difference," she said. Rabinovitch, who has lived near Pape and Danforth avenues for five years, said she’s humbled by the community’s kindness. "I’m speechless by how amazingly generous everybody is. We’re really grateful for the support," she said, adding she’s confident the purses will go to good use. Bloor West Village resident Jana Girdauskas created the grassroots campaign about three months ago. She never imagined the project would be so successful. "The generosity has been mind-blowing," she said at the packing party. With her work as a teacher, Girdauskas often drives around the city. Struck by the number of

street-involved and homeless women she saw, she decided to do something tangible to help. The concept for the Period Purse took off after Girdauskas put out a call for purses, menstrual products, and other personal hygiene items on a mom’s Facebook group in The Junction. To date, more than 1,100 purses have been collected and packed. Rogers, Proctor and Gamble, The Sock Project, Lush, and Stockyards Dental have been instrumental in the campaign’s success as they’ve all donated large quantities of much-needed items. The Period Purse campaign, which was launched on Family Day, has since expanded to Brantford, Durham Region, London, Niagara Region, Ottawa, Stratford, and Victoria, B.C. • OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special. This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait. The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way. For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others? Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11. After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year. Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others. These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city. Go online to www.urbanheroes.ca to nominate someone or to learn more.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away? Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion. And it probably won’t. Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park. Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet. At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street. True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto but it’s not too late, Tory said. City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes. "Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open. It won’t end. So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down. Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing. He’s sold on the idea. Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

and accountability. Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers. If that works, why stop? But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf. Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition. That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed. Style not exclusive to Indigenous artists, says reader To the editor: Re: Cancellation of art exhibit sparks cultural appropriation debate, May 4. Because of my experience in promoting the woodlands style of Indigenous art in the early 1970s, I disagree with those who

claim in Joanna Lavoie’s article of May 4, that nonIndigenous artist Amanda PL is guilty of "cultural appropriation". While the subjects of Ms. PL’s art are Indigenous, that style of art is most definitely not exclusive to Indigenous artists. What became known as the woodlands style was strongly influenced by cubism, realism and expressionism. In fact, Norval

Her style incorporated elements of aboriginal pictographs and Indigenous art with European styles and techniques. In fact, because of the manner in which her art was influenced by Picasso, she was invited, along with three other artists, to paint a memorial to Picasso at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. Daphne Odjig’s mother was English. Her Ojibway father met and married her

when he was serving in England during the First World War. Given that Daphne was only half Ojibway, would Ms. PL’s critics say that she "appropriated" Indigenous art? Of course not. Art is art. That’s akin to saying a Buddhist can’t paint the crucifixion. When Norval Morrisseau was severely burned in a hotel fire in Vancouver in 1972, he said he had a vision of Jesus encouraging him to be a role model through his art. After converting to the apostolic faith, he began to introduce Christian

themes into his paintings. At one point, Morrisseau was struck by the beauty of the images on stained glass windows at a local church. Some of his paintings, like Indian Jesus Christ, imitate that style and incorporate characters from the Bible with native features. No one accused Norval Morrisseau of appropriating Christian painting. Art is art. By having her show cancelled because she has been accused of "cultural appropriation", the very talented Ms. PL has been done a grave disservice. Her work should be shown. Robert MacBain Toronto

Premier Kathleen Wynne among contributors JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com East Toronto resident Sophie Stevens has come up with a creative and inspiring way to raise funds for her upcoming volunteer trip to Ecuador. To help pay for her $4,500 excursion, Stevens, who lives near Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street East, reached out to some

of the women who inspire her the most and asked them to contribute recipes as well as share their personal stories of empowerment for a cookbook titled Good Recipes, Great Women - A Female Empowerment Cookbook. Ward 32 Coun. MaryMargaret McMahon, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, local cafe owner Dawn Chapman, east Toronto actor/comedian Erin Keaney, journalists Louise Linton, Cynthia Mulligan, and Catherine Porter, as well as Roxanne Joyal, the CEO of the Me to We social enterprise, are just a few of

the women of note featured in Stevens’ book, which was first released in January. "There are so many amazing women in this community. The point was to focus on them," said 18year-old Stevens, who has sold about 140 copies of her $20 cookbook. "I’m so incredible proud of this project." This is the second time, Stevens is travelling abroad with Me to We. In 2013, she travelled to Kenya to help build an all-girls secondary school. On Saturday, May 13, Stevens will be heading to

Ecuador for two weeks where she’ll help build a women’s empowerment centre, among other things. "I really like (the organization’s) philosophy. It’s all about giving a hand up, not a hand out," she said. For more information or to buy a copy of Stevens’ cookbook, email goodrecipesgreatwomen@hotmail.com. The books are also available for purchasing at Lazy Daisy’s cafÊ, 1515 Gerarrd St. E.; Dreamer Hair Design, 953 Kingston Rd.; and Hair 1955, 104 Cedarvale Ave.

Hospital hosts comedy gala Stars will be standing up for a good cause on Saturday, May 13 as the Michael Garron Foundation presents its Laughter is the Best Medicine III comedy gala. The event, which will feature Saturday Night Live alumnus/Weeds star Kevin Nealon, takes place at the Beanfield Centre at Exhibition Place. Author and standup comedian Jim Gaffigan will serve as the evening’s head-

liner, while east Toronto native Will Arnett returns as the master of ceremonies. More than 1,200 guests are expected to attend the third annual comedy gala. "This isn’t your typical gala. It’s an evening of outstanding comedy and world-class food, for a great cause," said co-chair Michael Geddes in a recent release. "The event will also help to put a smile on the faces of more than half a

million people throughout the GTA who rely on Michael Garron Hospital for exceptional patient care." Proceeds from Laughter is the Best Medicine III, which is presented by BMO Financial Group, will be directed to the east Toronto hospital’s renewal and expansion as well as quality patient care. Visit www.laughteristhebestmedicine.ca for more details.

Environment days next week Two Community Environment Days are coming to Toronto’s east end this week. On Tuesday, May 16, Ward 31 Coun. Janet Davis will hold an event in the parking lot of the East York Memorial Arena, 888 Cosburn Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Ward 32 Coun. MaryMargaret McMahon’s Community’s Environment Day is set for Thursday, May 18 from 4 to 8 p.m.

in the parking lot of Ted Reeve Arena, 175 Main St. Community Environment Days aim to reduce the amount of reusable, recyclable and household hazardous waste going into landfill. They provide residents with a convenient place to drop off reusable and recyclable items like clothing, small appliances, non-perishable food, arts and craft

supplies, and sporting goods, among other things. People can also drop off household hazardous waste for safe disposal and obtain new green bins and kitchen containers. This year’s event will once again include shredding services and free compost. For more information, visit toronto.ca/environment_days or call 311.

Unsuspecting TTC riders on Queen Street woke up this week aghast to find their beloved 501 streetcar service replaced by lowly buses. OK, that’s an overstatement. Anecdotally speaking, it’s a rare day when any streetcars are referred to with endearment, much less the 501. When media descended to various sections of Queen to gauge opinions toward the changes - which are for construction and will mean buses operate the length of the line until September - they found no real animosity on display, if anything a sense of relief for some air conditioning. Ask any Queen, or King, streetcar user about their ride and you’ll likely hear a similar reaction. Trips, particularly in rush hour, are packed, service intermittent. When you finally board, the ancient streetcar lurches at speeds barely faster than an average gait. We all know the reasons

RAHUL GUPTA TO in Transit for the sorry situation, from long delayed new streetcars to the reality that a railed transit vehicle cannot optimally operate on congested streets already incapable of handling the volume of traffic. So yeah, it’s not surprising there’s hardly a murmur of protest now the streetcars have left Queen. But let’s be clear: streetcars. however imperfect, remain the backbone of Toronto’s surface transit operations. Buses are accessible, can change lanes to avoid blockage and, yes, are air-conditioned. They still can’t hold a candle to street-

cars. According to the most recent available TTC data, the 501 is the sixth busiest surface route in the city for daily ridership. Yes, it does trail some bus routes in that regard, on avenues which would be much better served by rapid transit. If you count streetcars, Toronto has the largest light rail network on the continent, and the 501 on its own is bigger than the systems for St. Louis, Sacramento and Pittsburgh. No matter how many buses you run, they cannot compare to the number of riders a streetcar can transport, and the TTC would likely go bankrupt in the process. So sure, by all means knock the 501, but don’t underestimate the role it plays in moving Toronto, even at a snail’s pace. ‘Globally significant program’: minister l Continued from page 1

ral expo/festival will run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8. EDIT’s overarching theme is prosperity for all, which will be explored in depth in an impactful installation of the same name curated by renowned Canadian designer Bruce Mah, who is the co-founder of the Massive Change Network. Cultural thinkers Carlo Ratti, Jamie Oliver, Julielynn Wong, and Kentaro Toyama have also been retained to curate multi-sensory exhibits based on the four pillars of EDIT: shelter/cities, nourish, care, and educate. "EDIT is a global platform for ideas that can change the world for the better. . (It) will be a catalyst for positive change through the doorway of design," said Shauna Levy, Design Exchange’s president and CEO, during the expo’s May 3 launch event.

Eleanor McMahon, Ontario’s minister of tourism, culture and sport, said EDIT, which the province is supporting through a $1.75 million Ontario 150 grant, is an "inspiring, globally significant program." "I’m proud of the conversations that will take place here and the ideas and outcomes they will generate," she said, adding EDIT is an opportunity to share ideas, promote collaboration, and inspire the next generation of innovators. Toronto Mayor John Tory called EDIT a celebration of disrupters, innovators, and those who think outside the box, and said it is reflective of the highly desirable way of life in Toronto. Tory, who noted that the city has financially supported the concept since it was first floated in 1994, said the expo is an opportunity to use our creativity and prosperity to care for those who are struggling.

"Events like EDIT provide an opportunity for creative people to come together and find innovative ways to solve the challenges our city faces," the mayor said in a May 3 release. "We need to address these challenges of affordable housing, protecting our environment, and building a smart city through technology so Toronto can continue to be one of the most livable and competitive cities in the world. Working together, we can improve how this city functions for the benefit of all who live, work and invest here." Organizers are expecting upwards of 100,000 people will attend EDIT: Expo for Design, Innovation and Technology, which is also supported by Rogers Communications Inc., First Gulf, Air Canada, Metrolinx, Facebook Canada and Deloitte.
