James McKinnon, right, the owner of Dangerous Dan’s Diner, has a laugh with customers and staff hours before the popular greasy spoon closed its doors for good.

Bidding adieu to Dangerous Dan’s Diner JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The days of heart-attack inducing burgers in Riverside have come to an end. On Sunday, May 28 around 10:30 p.m., Dangerous Dan’s Diner at the northeast corner of Queen Street East and Broad-

view Avenue served its last customer. After 18 years, the east Toronto eatery known for its oversized burgers has recently fallen victim to rising rent. "We didn’t want to close but we couldn’t pay them what they wanted," said owner James McKinnon from his familiar

perch at the restaurant’s front cash register. "I knew I’d have to close some day." In recent years, three local establishments, Jilly’s Gentleman’s Club, The Real Jerk, and Tommaso’s Trattoria on Eastern Avenue, have shuttered as the neighbourhood undergoes signif-

icant changes. Two years ago, Pizza Nova purchased the building that housed Dangerous Dan’s at 714 Queen St. E. In the end, both parties were unable to renegotiate a lease. "We’ve been negotiating the

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Toronto residents Kate Salter and Shannon Candido are working to ensure no one has to forgo eating fresh, healthy food because they can’t afford to do so. Last spring, Sadler, who is from the city’s west end, and Candido, who calls Leslieville home, founded GoodFood Help, a peer-topeer food relief initiative that provides healthy, nutritious food to those experiencing temporary, unexpected food insecurity. Together with a team of volunteers, they’ve served upwards of 700 people in the past year. Food drop offs usually take place discreetly at public places like subway stations. GoodFood Help started with a request for a banana on a Bunz online trading zone. Salter replied to the Facebook post and offered to give that person fresh fruit and veggies and some healthy meals. She never did hear back from the original poster but dozens of others from all ages and walks of life facing a range of challenges accessing fresh, healthy food chimed in. "The next morning, there were 3,000 likes and 12 personal requests (for fresh food) by the end of the weekend," said Salter, who also received several offers from people wanting to help. "The need was there." To date, GoodFood Help has provided food to those hit by an expected bill,

And a year in, the need is greater than ever. "There is a larger need for this than we initially thought. We’re filling the gaps," said Candido, who works as a freelance graphic and web designer. She also serves as GoodFood Help’s communications and creative director. "We’re feeding people who are undernourished. We’re a nutritious (food) source for people." Salter, who handles the majority

She said the peer-topeer initiative is one way for Torontonians who are having trouble accessing fresh, healthy food to receive a little bit of extra, albeit temporary, assistance without red tape, stigma, or questions asked. CANADA TO DEVELOP A NATIONAL FOOD POLICY The Government of Canada is seeking Canadians’ input on the development of its first national food policy. Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay made the announcement Monday at Ryerson University during the Canadian Association of Food Studies’ 12th annual assembly. To help in developing A Food Policy for Canada, the federal government is asking people to fill out an online survey at www.canada.ca/food-policy. This is the first of a number of ways Canadians are being invited to help develop a national food policy. The government also plans on holding broad consultations through events in the coming months. On June 22 and 23, stakeholders will have the opportunity to share their views on the policy’s development and learn more from experts and key policy makers at the A Food Policy for Canada Summit in Ottawa. The overall aim is to shape a food policy across Canada from farm to fork that increases access to affordable food, improves health and food safety, conserves our soil, water, and air, and grows more high-quality food.

institute a national food security strategy. Bronson said pilot studies in Ontario for a $17,000 basic income is a good start. Canada-wide, she’d like to see a national food strategy move forward as soon as possible. "None of that is happening now," she said. "Food is a basic human right and all Canadian should have access to it. We need to fix a goal on this country to eliminate hunger. This is not beyond the realm of the possible."

gram going and funds are always needed. "We are completely donation driven," said Salter, who said they’d like to see a long-term plan put in place so that people aren’t stuck seeking out healthy, fresh food options. A fundraiser for GoodFood Help, which is currently in the process of being registered as a nonprofit organization, is in the works for July. Visit https://www.facebook.com/goodfoodhelp/ or http://goodfoodhelp.com/ for more information. Diana Bronson, executive director of Food Security Canada, said

there is absolutely no excuse for people to be going hungry in such a prosperous country like Canada. Her organization is a pan-Canadian alliance of organizations and individuals that work together to advance food security and food sovereignty through the inter-locking goals of the zero hunger, healthy and safe food, and sustainable food systems. According to Statistics Canada, four million Canadians or 12 per cent of the population is living with some form of food insecurity. What is even more shocking is that 60 per cent of those dealing with food security issues are employed. "A lot of these people are working. They’re just not making a decent wage," said Bronson during an interview with Metroland Media. "I think it’s really important to acknowledge that the primary driver of food insecurity is poverty." She said the government needs to come up with more "income-based solutions" to permanently stop people from experiencing food insecurity. "We’ve been in stop-gap mode for almost 40 years now," Bronson said, pointing to Canada’s first food bank that opened in Edmonton, Alberta back in 1981. "I think everybody knows food banks are not a solution." For more than a decade, Food Security Canada has lobbied various levels of government to set a basic income and

renewal of (McKinnon’s) lease in good faith, and in line with market rates, as we always do with our tenants," said Domenic Primucci, president of Pizza Nova, in an email to The Beach Mirror shortly after Dangerous Dan’s announced it would be shutting down this spring. He said the pizza chain considered McKinnon a "valued tenant" and said they were "surprised and sorry" to learn the diner would be closing its doors at the end of May. Customers have been lining up outside Dangerous Dan’s since Friday morning to get a last taste of The Double D, as it’s affectionately known. "I knew we’d be busy. I’m getting customers I haven’t seen in years who are coming in," McKinnon said Sunday evening. "There are people I haven’t seen since they were teenagers and now

they’re coming in with their kids to say goodbye." Arjoo Tanbir along with friends Ryan Halliday, Bowen Yu, and Jer Briones patiently waited in line outside the no frills diner Sunday evening to a final bite. "I’ve been coming here since I was in high school," said Tanbir, who planned on ordering a four-patty Quadruple C burger. "We used to come here quite often and have big burger challenges, but this will be the last time." Halliday, who had never eaten at The Double D, said he’s been meaning to come to Dangerous Dan’s for the longest time. "It’s my first and last time here," laughed Halliday, who also planned on ordering one of the diner’s massive burgers. "Go big or go home." Former staff members Jeffrey McDonald and his son Tasunke Sugar also stopped by Sunday night.

Arjoo Tanbir, left, Jeffrey McDonald, and Tasunke Sugar stopped by Dangerous Dan’s Diner in Riverside Sunday, May 28 for a bite hours before the popular greasy spoon closed its doors for good. "(James) gave me my first job," said Sugar, who was looking forward to enjoying a "Big Pig" burger. "I had to come. I wanted to be a part of the last day." McDonald, who planned on ordering an infamous ’Coronary Burger’, said

while McKinnon may have a rough and gruff exterior, he definitely has a soft heart. "We’ve known James for so many years. He did so much for the community. He’s given so many people their first start," said

McDonald, adding it’s a shame gentrification pushed out the well-loved local greasy spoon. "We have a lot of respect for James." Six of McKinnon’s former staff members came out to work closing week-

end. Four of those old employees have been helping out for the last four months since McKinnon announced the restaurant would be closing. And while many customers and staff members have fond memories of The Double D, McKinnon said the diner would also forever hold a special place in his heart. "This place is a big part of my life. I wouldn’t know my wife, Amy, if it wasn’t for this restaurant," he smiled. "There are lots of fond memories here." In the next few months, the couple will be selling their house in Riverside and moving to the Owen Sound area where they’ve recently purchased a twoacre property. Amy will be working as the head of fundraising for a hospital up there, while McKinnon, who said he isn’t sure of his next steps, will be busy with the upkeep of the property - for now.

ABOUT US

The ’Fair Hydro Plan’ is anything but that Welcome one and all to the Ontario government’s incredible, stupendous hydro-cuts emporium where you can buy cheaper electricity today - then pay big-time for it later. If this makes the Liberals’ misnamed Fair Hydro Plan sound like a slick scheme concocted to get them re-elected, that’s because to a large degree it is. Yes, we know Ontarians were begging for relief from constantly soaring hydro bills. We also know many consumers are cheering Premier Kathleen Wynne’s plan to slash hydro rates by 25 per cent this year and then limit increases to the inflation rate for the next four years. But as the province’s financial watchdog reported last week, the cost of insulating Ontarians from soaring energy bills will eventually shock them to the tips of their toes. To be sure, the Liberal plan will save consumers $24 billion over the next four years. That’s a tidy sum and it’s no coincidence the savings are perfectly timed to inspire warm and fuzzy feelings for the Liberals before the June 2018 election. But as the Financial Accountability Office just reported, it will cost the province a jaw-dropping $45 billion over the next 29 years to make those savings possible. In addition, if interest rates rise or the province starts running deficits again, the eventual cost of the plan could balloon to $93 billion. The inescapable reason for this daunting bill is that the province must borrow heavily to pay for the discounted hydro rates. That money must be repaid. And in order to lower hydro bills in the short term, the government will need to increase them in subsequent years to cover the debt that finances the plan. It’s all a bit like using a carving knife to extract a splinter. The operation may succeed, but the bleeding will be considerable. So, while you can, enjoy seeing average monthly hydro bills drop from $163 to $123 starting this summer. But brace yourself for hydro rates to increase by 6.8 per cent a year from 2021 to 2027. Be ready for the average monthly bill to rise to $213 by 2028. It is a reminder, too, of how badly this government has mismanaged the electricity file - think of their subsidies for wind and solar energy we don’t need. Other governments of different political stripes have made a mess of it before. But the Wynne government has nothing to be proud of in how they’ve handled Ontario’s electricity system.

People will keep fighting for ’$15 and Fairness’ Today, June 1, Queen’s Park shuts for the summer. It’s the last day before fall for the Liberal government to say they’re reforming Ontario’s labour laws, and raising minimum wage to $15. As of this writing, I don’t know what the government announced or hasn’t. I know people in the $15 and Fairness campaign made every day count. They’ve already done more than politicians thought they could. So many of us are stuck in precarious and parttime jobs. For two years, campaigners seemed to be everywhere, on streetcars and street corners, reaching people who fit that description. They’ve demanded $15

They were poised a week ago to get serious labour reform, not because government suddenly saw the light, as the Workers’ Action Centre’s Deena Ladd says, but because people fought for it. Sarkar, a community action leader for Access Alliance - that’s one of his three part-time jobs - in Scarborough’s Oakridge and East York’s Crescent Town. He’s met fellow immigrants who wait in vain to get called to work, or are sent home after an hour or two, or get $6 or $7 an hour at a grocery or convenience store. They need rent money, but without paid sick days, Sarkar says, many go to work sick, or pay a further price in back pain, or repetitive strain injuries. Malka Paracha, a food service supervisor at York University, "was an anti-union person" a while ago. But then a union, along with students and faculty, helped York’s servers stand up

and win $15 an hour and full benefits. "It is 200 per cent possible. We did it," says Paracha. The Changing Workplaces Review recommendations are a mixed bag. Campaigners knew Ontario’s Chamber of Commerce would call their reforms a job killer, but they kept pushing the government for the full package. If it wasn’t introduced by June 1, perhaps it would come this fall. If MPPs expect this to stop, they’re wrong. "If they don’t listen," Ladd says, "they will hear it at the ballot box." Leslieville signs threatening dogs ’scare tactic’ JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Toronto police have determined signs left outside a Leslieville commercial property allegedly threatening to poison dogs who defecate on the grass, were placed there by a frustrated property owner, not someone who intended to harm to animals. "He did it as a scare tactic to deter people from letting their dogs poop on his property," said Const. Jon Morrice of 55 Division. "It certainly worked." On May 24, a number of residents called police after spotting several signs placed outside a loft building at 20 Leslie St. The posters are directed at the owner of a large dog who allegedly allows their pet to use the area "as a bathroom." The typed note goes on to warn the dog owner that "special treats" have been dropped in the grass that will make the dog "REAL SICK." This morning, officers from 55 Division were about to commence an investigation when the property owner showed up at the scene and cleared things up. "Police were about the initiate an investigation when the property owner showed up and explained his motive. There was no criminal intent. It was just to get attention," said Morrice, noting that the prop-

The new event, which will be held at Beach United Church, 140 Wineva Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m., is inspired by a similar fundraiser Bryan heard about seven years ago when she lived in British Columbia. "I loved the idea," said Bryan, who works as an area co-ordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation but is organizing Saturday’s event independently. "I think the bond between father and daughter is really special." Bryan, who lost her father to cancer two years ago, is the mother of two young daughters. dren to create some special memories with their dad," she said. Bryan said she is hoping her fundraiser, which will include music, dancing, refreshments and treats as well as games, a professional photography booth and a mobile salon, will raise $4,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A number of corporate and individual donors have come on board to donate their time

and services. Bryan said the event is especially relevant as this month is Father’s Day. June is also Stroke Month. Tickets cost $25 for a parent and one child and $5 extra for more children. Any adult can accompany their daughter/granddaughter to the dance and all are welcome. Visit http://beachesdance.eventbrite.ca for more information.
