Metropolitan church names new senior pastor Rev. Jeff Rock officially starts his duties at Riverdale-based church on Oct. 1 With a puff of pink smoke, the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto has begun a new chapter in its 44-year history. Following a rigorous and thorough selection process, Rev. Jeff Rock was selected by the diverse congregation as its new senior pastor earlier this month. Much like the tradition of the Vatican’s papal elections, the Riverdale-based church confirmed the news with coloured smoke emanating from its chimney. Rock, who is presently a

minister at Gaetz Memorial United Church in Red Deer, Alta., preached for the first time as MCC Toronto’s senior pastor elect that evening. The 33-year-old Sudbury native is set to officially begin his duties at MCC Toronto on Sunday, Oct. 1 and will be preaching for the first time as the church’s new senior pastor the following Sunday. Rock will be visiting Toronto a number of times between now and then. "This congregation has a 44-year legacy of building an inclusive community, city, country and world. But the work here is not done," Rock, who holds a bachelor of science degree in microbiology and immunology and a masters of divinity, said in a July 9 release. "I am honoured to have

been elected to lead the next generation of social justice and faith at Canada’s most progressive Christian church." For the first four months, Rock will be working closely with MCC Toronto’s retiring pastor, Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes. Hawkes, who is marking 40 years of service in 2017, will preach for the final time at MCC Toronto’s Christmas Eve service. His retirement party is set to take place on Oct. 19 at the Carlu. "The search for my successor was a patient, transparent and inclusive process and I am so proud of the result," Hawkes said in the communiqué. "We had a very diverse pool of applicants. I am thrilled to pass my life’s work on to Jeff. You could say I’m tickled pink."

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com The sights, sounds, colours, and flavours of South Asia will be celebrated this weekend during the 15th annual Festival of South Asia. The popular free community event, which organizers expect will draw upwards of 200,000 people, is put on by the Gerrard India Bazaar Business Improvement Area (BIA). This year’s festivities, which will be held along Gerrard Street East between Coxwell and Glenside avenues, will include a cricket open house, a beer garden, Bollywood pop-up mela (celebration), a yoga studio, a culture alley, and a kids’ zone, among other things. On Saturday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m., revelers can also enjoy a storytelling event

called "What’s Your Bazaar Memory?" at the Gerrard/ Ashdale Library at 1432 Gerrard St. E. As always, the festival will include dynamic musical performances, artists, entertainment for all ages, tasting tables, sidewalk sales, henna art, and more. "During the two-day festival, we will be showcasing music, dance, food, and the essence of South Asia. There will also be lots of bargains and take-aways," said Chand Kapoor, chair of the Gerard India BIA, in a July 14 release. "Our mission is to revive the legacy of the Gerrard India Bazaar (Business Improvement Area) that thrives along Gerrard Street and to celebrate and promote South Asian culture and diversity. I am sure that everyone will have a great time with their families."

Tasneem Bandukwala, the BIA’s manager, said one of the key goals of the festival is to "bring the Bazaar back" and give local merchants and restaurateurs an "opportunity to display their unique products and services". "Our vision is to continue to inspire, educate, and captivate audiences; to continue to flourish our "Little India", whilst captivating an audience and leading us all to unite as Canadians," she wrote in the news release. The TD Festival of South Asia, which organizers tout as the largest of its kind in North America, will run Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23 from noon to 11 p.m. daily. Metroland Media Toronto is sponsoring the event. Visit http://www.gerrardindiabazaar.com/ for more information.

The men are among a group of Wildwood Crescent area residents concerned with plans to expand service on the rail corridor just north of Gerrard Street. On front: François Larsen (left), Diane Runions, Sheila Crowe, Jan Gale, Mary Connolly along with Bosworth and Booth. to deal with the decisions that are being made," said Bosworth, who underlined that area residents aren’t opposed to improving the regional transit system. "This needs to work both ways. It’s got to be done in a responsible matter that’s good for affected communities everywhere." Bosworth said the recently formed coalition is also seeking out the support of local politicians to ensure residents’ voices are being heard. Many of those who attended the July 13 meeting expressed concern about the height or lack of a sound barrier near their homes. Others worried about how the vibrations from both the construction as well as increased service would impact their quality of life.

"It’s clear that there is more discussion required," Bosworth said. Larcen said the project, as it is being presented now, is "half-baked" and "totally unacceptable." "We want to get real answers and have our concerns heard and addressed," he said. "We want the issues addressed beyond the bare minimum. (Metrolinx) basically had its mandate and they won’t go beyond (that)." Larcen said at the end of the day, neighbours are coming together to keep their neighbourhood liveable for years to come. "We should be partners in this project," he said. Beaches-East York MPP Arthur Potts, the parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Environment

and Climate Change, said he feels residents shouldn’t have to "bear the brunt" of a project the rest of the community gets to benefit from and vowed to advocate for his constituents. "The expansion of GO service is a critical part of our government’s transit expansion plan - it will ensure thousands get to work and back home faster, and will help relieve congestion in our community and elsewhere in the city of Toronto," Potts said. "However, this expansion needs to balance the greater good with important local questions about noise and safety."Specifically, Potts said discussions need to take place around sound levels after the completion of the rail line, the height of sound barrier walls, and mitigat-

ing vibration from the new rail line. "I appreciate the commitment Metrolinx has demonstrated already in listening to my community, and I look forward to a productive and open dialogue moving forward," he said. During the July 13 meeting, André Marois, the director of Metrolinx’s Lakeshore East Corridor project, said the agency is listening to residents’ concerns. "I hear the message that you want us to go above and beyond. Feedback from the community does make a difference," said Marois, who assured a "two-way dialogue" would happen. "We actually want this to be true, pure communication, and we want this to be the best we can do for this community."

Currently, two Environmental Assessments are underway for the Lakeshore East Rail Corridor expansion and improvement project. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America and requires additional track capacity to support increasing GO service on the Lakeshore East and Stouffville lines and maintaining service reliability. Metrolinx is currently seeking feedback from the public. For more information about the project or to be added to the mailing list, mail Georgina Collymore, Metrolinx’s Senior Advisor of Environmental Assessment Community Relations at 20 Bay St., Ste. 600, Toronto, ON, M5J 2W3, email donriverscarborough@metrolinx.com, or call 416-202-4921.

Residents from the Woodbine Avenue and Gerrard Street area want to ensure they have a seat at the table when it comes to the expansion of the Lakeshore East Rail Corridor. Recently, Metrolinx - the provincial agency that manages and integrates road and public transport in the Golden Horseshoe held three community meetings on the project, which over the next 10 years is slated to bring 15minute, two-way electrified service to the Lakeshore East Rail Corridor. Some Beach Hill area residents felt they weren’t receiving enough information about the project, which will see the Lakeshore East GO Transit line expanded and improved from the Don River to the Scarborough GO Station, and that their concerns about noise and vibration weren’t being heard and addressed. David Bosworth and François Larsen, who both live on Wildwood Crescent, decided to do something about that and have formed an informal residents’ group called the Lakeshore East Rail Expansion Citizens Coalition. Found on Facebook at bit.ly/lerecc, the group now has about 200 members. It aims to be a central point for those living in the Beach Hill, Woodbine Corridor, and Upper Beach communities to share comments, concerns, and ideas about the project. Last Thursday, the coalition held a public meeting, which about 120 neighbours, local politicians, and Metrolinx staff attended. "We’re just people living in the community that have

Photo exhibit makes North American debut JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While few would argue that peace is a laudable goal, defining exactly what peace entails is not exactly easy to do. A massive art exhibit that looks to highlight notable and perhaps less wellknown peacemakers and those who have striven to create a peaceful world has landed in the Canary District, making its North American debut after hitting a dozen other destinations in Europe, South America and Africa. Entitled "Making Peace," the exhibit was curated as part of the Nobel Prize Centenary in Geneva in 2010. "I was asked to curate an exhibit for the Centenary about peace and my first question to them was ’tell me about peace. Tell me what peace means,’" recalled Making Peace curator Ashley Woods. "Like

most people, I knew peace was a good thing but I didn’t really know how to define peace." Woods began collecting photos as a means of offering up what he calls a "beginner’s guide to peace," with everyone from political leaders to everyday men, women and children who have battled injustice and violence. While the focus is international - more than 100 pictures showcase conflicts and peacemakers from around the world Canada has a person of honour in Lester B. Pearson. "Toronto gave birth to the only Canadian featured in the exhibit," Woods said of Pearson, who earned a Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for helping to broker a resolution to the Suez Crisis through the United Nations. To date, Pearson remains the only Canadian to be so honoured. Making Peace also highlights Nelson Mandela with a TTC streetcar bearing his

This includes barbershop singers, vocal jazz, world music, contemporary pop music, and original compositions. Extend timeline for minimum wage hike Committee hearings are underway on the province’s proposal to raise the minimum wage in Ontario to $15 by 2019. We don’t envy its members. These hearings, to be held across the province, are sure to attract passionate, reasoned, and even desperate responses from stakeholders on both sides of this issue. The government plans to hike the minimum wage, now set to rise with inflation from $11.40 an hour to $11.60 in October, up to $14 on Jan. 1, 2018, and to $15 the following year. Nearly nine per cent of Ontario workers are paid the minimum wage, the second highest total of any province. On the labour side, we can expect support for the hike, with advocates citing an improvement in living standards and an anticipated boost to economic activity. (Economic activity is increasingly critical, as Statistics Canada data shows more than half of the country’s economy is driven by consumer spending). Proponents of the hike can also point to a National Employment Law Project report in the U.S., which revealed that minimum wage hikes are likely to create more jobs than they kill. Official government data, gathered from between 1938 and 2009, in which there were 22 increases to the minimum wage, found that 68 per cent of the time, the employment rate had actually risen 12 months after the wage hike. On the business side, many appear alarmed by the timeline for the change, warning it will cause job losses, discourage investors and worse. Fanning the flames are additional proposed reforms – equal pay for part-time workers, increased vacation benefits and expanded personal-emergency leave. "Many Ontario employers, especially small businesses, are now considering closing their business because they do not have the capacity to successfully manage such reforms," read a statement by a coalition including the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Restaurants Canada and the Canadian Franchise Association. “There is no way to absorb and adjust to a 32 per cent hit in less than 18 months.” The group’s rhetoric is sufficiently severe that one wonders if the coalition’s prophecy of economic constriction will become self-fulfilling, should the proposals be adopted. In any case, this is a rare occasion in which both sides of the argument are persuasive and it will be fascinating to see the committee’s recommendations. Perhaps the best outcome would see the province extend the time frame for the wage increase sufficiently to relive some of the pressure felt by the business community.

Handling of land deal speaks well for council It speaks well of the members of the current term of council, that it’s taken this long for something like the Arrow Road land deal to emerge. The attempts by the Toronto Parking Authority to purchase the property at 1111 Arrow Rd., for what seems to be considerably more - $2.6 million more than it ought to be worth, almost feels like a throwback to pre-millennial times. That, older Torontonians may remember, was the age of MFP, the computer leasing company that convinced Toronto councillors and bureaucrats to sign a lease for desktop computers that wound up costing tens of millions of dollars more than they thought it

DAVID NICKLE The City would. There was a public inquiry - the Bellamy Inquiry, as it became known and the report that Madame Justice Denise Bellamy wrote reads like a John Grisham novel, as a lobbyist for the Mississauga-based company insinuated himself with senior staff and at least one wellplaced politician. The revelations shook

the city and ended careers, and the simple fact of what happened cost Toronto taxpayers significantly,. The parking authority deal may or may not be the same sort of thing. But here is an encouraging note: we are likely to find out, one way or another. The contrast between how Toronto Council dealt with the MFP scandal in 2002 and 2003, and the way that Toronto Council has dealt with the potential scandal at the parking authority is striking. Then, councillors were locked in a genuine debate about whether to dig deep into the problems with the computer lease that city manager Shirley Hoy re-

ported on. It got a bit ugly. This time out, councillors wasted no time. When the confidential report from Toronto’s auditor general came to the Audit Committee, its chair Stephen Holyday immediately made it public. When the matter came to Council, councillors spent the lion’s share of the meeting going over it, before immediately suspending the parking authority’s board and putting it into the hands of city staff. When the new board met, City Manager and Chair Peter Wallace put staff on administrative leave, and launched an investigation. It is good to see the impact of lessons learned well.

A circa 1891 Riverside landmark will soon be reopening its doors to the public. After more than two years of work, the newlyrenovated Broadview Hotel at the northwest corner of Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue will be welcoming patrons for the first time on Thursday, Ju-

ly 27. The boutique hotel and event venue will include 58 guest rooms, a lobby cafe and bar, a restaurant, a roof top lounge and more than 3,000 square feet of event space. Streetcar Developments and Dream Unlimited are working together to resurrect the 126-year-old east Toronto landmark. "We are delighted to have visitors explore and experience what we have been crafting, curating and creating within the walls of the Broadview Hotel," said hotel owner Les Mallins, president of Streetcar Developments, in a June 30 release.

"Our vision is to create a destination that honours the building’s history and transforms the space into a landmark hub that reflects east-end culture. The building has been a cornerstone in the community and we’re excited to welcome people back inside." The Broadview Hotel, which has a distinct Romanesque revival architectural style, is a designated Toronto heritage property. The building, which was in a state of disrepair, was previously home to a rooming house and strip club. Visit www.TheBroadviewHotel.ca for more details.
