Women lost husbands five months apart

| Beach Mirror | Thursday, July 27, 2017

East-end widows grateful for community’s support JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com

Joanna Lavoie/Metroland

Six-year-old Brooklyn, left, mom Sarah Keast, and daughter Piper, 2, along with Alexie Landry and daughter Adeline, who is turning two in August, have become close friends since the passing of their husbands last year. She heard about the death of her friend’s husband on social media."I just felt like I had to do something," said Campbell, a mother of two who has lived near Danforth and Chester avenues for about five years. "I knew the community had rallied around Sarah so I thought it could be a good thing to (start a meal train) for Alexie." Campbell said she did it because anyone could be in Landry’s shoes and offering a grieving widow a bit of a reprieve from cooking to focus on other things was the least she could do. Like Chan, Campbell said she’s moved by the community’s kindness. "There’s something very special about the east part of the city. People are

very genuine, I find, and willing to help each other out," she said. Both Keast and Landry received daily meals for about four months following the death of their husbands, who both did most of the cooking." After Kevin’s death I couldn’t think straight. To not have to cook for two children made all the difference," Keast said, calling the meals a "really lovely, a little surprise every day." Landry, who lives in the Beach near Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue, also appreciated the help and encouragement."Not having to deal with cooking for that amount of time was really helpful," she said. "Every night there

would be a full meal in the little fridge on the porch. Sometimes there would be cards or a note." Aside from providing meals, the local women have also received gift certificates, monetary donations, free babysitting, legal advice, help around the house, and more. Members of the East Toronto Young Mothers Facebook group were especially supportive of their young widows. "I’ve always wanted ETYM to be the village many of us need and don’t have. It’s spectacular and humbling and emotional to see it come to fruition in some ways," said Emily Weinmann, the group’s creator. "When I had heard about both of them, I knew

that reaching out to the group would mean everything. And I think other people did too, which means they are feeling the community of ETYM, and that is really something." Weinmann said she received several messaged from people wanting to help Keast and Landry, a gesture she said "spoke volumes about how much we care about each other, despite often having never even met." Keast said despite having gone through an awful time some "really beautiful things" have happened in her life. "All of this really confirmed for me that people are good. They just really wanted to help," she said.Landry said her personal tragedy has allowed her

to be a witness to the community’s amazing spirit. "You think when you live in a big city you’re not going to get that kind of compassion but in the east end it’s like a small town almost," she said. "It touched my heart in such a profound way. I will never forget that. I can never pay them all back but I will pay it forward." Because of their similar circumstances, Keast and Landry have become close friends and confidantes. "It’s a terrible club to belong to but we’re happy we’re in it together," Keast shared during a recent interview at her home.Landry agreed. "It’s just nice to have someone who totally knows what you’re going through," she smiled.

East Toronto residents Sarah Keast and Alexie Landry feel indebted to the community for helping them through one of the worst tragedies of their lives. On Aug. 7, 2016, Keast, a mother of two young daughters, lost her husband Kevin to a heroin overdose, while Landry, who also has a young daughter, found her husband Jamie unresponsive the morning of Dec. 24, 2016. In the days and weeks following the death of their husbands, scores of friends, neighbours, and kind-hearted strangers came forward to help the young mothers in myriad ways. Sara Chan, Keast’s longtime friend, organized a meal train program where people who wanted to help out could sign up to prepare supper for the young family. "It all came together really quickly," said Chan, a mother of two who lives just a few blocks from Keast, near Coxwell and Danforth avenues. "It was really touching. There was so much willingness to help." Another friend set up a crowdfunding campaign, which raised $30,000 for Keast and her girls. "The idea was for the kids’ education and for Sarah to just have something to fall back on," said Chan, who said the outpouring of kindness has taught her to be more mindful of others in her community. "All of this was going on without Sarah’s knowledge. Lots of complete strangers offered to help out. It was so sweet. To me, it shows Toronto is smaller than we think." Alex Campbell attended law school with Landry more than a decade ago.

was structurally unsound," explained Murray Henderson, general manager of the Broadview Hotel, during a recent tour. To stabilize the structure, a series of large pillars and supports have been attached to the structure’s skeleton. "There was a lot of architecture and engineering that went on," he said. As part of the complex renovation, Streetcar Developments, the project’s developer and builder, along with business partner Dream Unlimited, was also required to come up with a plan that maintained the building’s historically designated east and south facades. A great deal of effort and money was put in to restoring and cleaning the distinctive terra cotta brick and stonework. A glass box addition was also erected on the north side of the structure at the

Toronto needs help dealing with legalized weed Drugs cost money. This is a universal truth: whether it’s the legal kind like alcohol or tobacco, or the banned stuff like cocaine or heroin, or, for now, marijuana, a habit is going to take a chunk out of anyone’s paycheque in addition to their life expectancy. As it is with us as frail individuals, so it is with the governments we elect, when we make the choice to turn on the tap - or light the pipe - of legalized intoxicants. And when legalized marijuana becomes a reality in Canada next year, it’s going to cost money. Last week, Mayor John Tory pointed this out, in the latest of a series of letters to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Tory made the point as he was insisting that Toronto be heavily-involved in any of the decisions regarding implementing that legalization. Much of those decisions will come at a provincial level - notably, how and where the drug is sold, what the minimum age will be for purchasing marijuana, and so on. For Toronto, it’s particularly important to regulate where and how marijuana is sold. We know here from bitter experience with illegal dispensaries that relatively unregulated sales will go badly. The province should make sure that the sale of marijuana takes place well away from schools and community centres, and other places where young people and the vulnerable congregate. Although Tory didn’t mention it in his letter, the federal government would also do well to take a cue from Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen De Villa, who earlier this year wrote a report calling for the immediate decriminalization of marijuana. De Villa noted that many of the problems that the city is having now with illegal dispensaries would go away with an immediate legalization and subsequent regulation. But that is not to say that legalization, now or next year, will solve all of our problems. Tory notes that Dr. De Villa and Toronto’s health department will be very busy as marijuana use becomes more widespread, dealing with the very real public health issues that arise from use, and inevitable overuse, of the drug. The city will inevitably be involved in providing inspections and regulating locations. Police will take on new and potentially costly roles. Tory’s suggestion that the cost of those services come out of provincial tax on marijuana is a sensible one. The fallout of legalization will cost money, and it only makes sense that those who choose to use foot the bill.

Scarborough’s shoreline belongs to everyone The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has a collective headache coming this Friday as they vote on a new shoreline park. The Scarborough Waterfront Project will be monumental if it’s ever built. People will go to Bluffers Park Beach, and realize they can walk or bike from there to Pickering. They could visit Guild Park, Highland Creek, or the Rouge River. Most of the park already exists, You walk down Bellamy Ravine, see Marlene Hilton Moore’s steel statue, Passages, and the road below the Scarborough Bluffs stretches east. There’s landslide danger, especially this year, but the water’s blue, the bluffs lovely. People, most-

But now that the TRCA wants to finish the park spending perhaps $170 million - self-appointed defenders of the bluffs and beaches call the plan "malevolent," saying it’ll destroy sandy beaches "teaming with rare flora and fauna." On Friday, the TRCA board will listen as they paint their cause green. Hardening a shoreline

with stones to stop erosion doesn’t wipe out ecosystems. I walked Port Union Waterfront Park, which would connect to this one, after it opened. A mink darted across rocks. I saw killdeer, a gopher. I heard green frogs. The place was artificial, and hardened, but not devoid of life. The Authority says the two sandy beaches in question, one of which it will preserve, can only be accessed now by crossing private lands on homemade paths trampling sensitive vegetation. The new park will give visitors safe, legal access. But access shouldn’t just be for the few. There’s something unspoken in Scarborough: people living north of

Kingston Road aren’t supposed to go south of it. There’s no TTC bus to Bluffers. In summer, the lots fill. It’s a favourite ticketing spot. Legal parking anywhere around the bluffs is scarce, as if the city wants to discourage visitors. We hear about selfieseeking yahoos on the bluffs, the litter and campfires. But many Torontonians never go, and should. Scarborough’s shoreline and bluffs doesn’t just belong to people who live there. They belong to me, and they belong to everyone in Greater Toronto who wants to wander through public land. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

4 sun safety tips for summer Sun safety is more than just sunscreen. Read on to keep you and your family totally protected.

APPLY ENOUGH SUNSCREEN Taking the time to apply your sunscreen correctly is the main factor in how well your sunscreen will protect you. While the amount of sunscreen varies from person to person, the rule of thumb is an ample, visible layer. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after sweating, swimming, or towelling off.

BE MINDFUL Even after properly applying a high SPF sunscreen, and then reapplying often, it’s still possible to get too much sun. That’s because no sunscreen can block 100 per cent of the sun’s rays, and the sun’s strength varies depending on the time of day, the time of year, and where you are. You need to know your limit and seek shade when you’ve reached it.

COVER UP Donning additional protective clothing long sleeves and a big, floppy hat means skin is exposed. Less exposed skin means sunscreen is needed — and that can save and your family big bucks, as well as keep safe in the sun.

SEEK OR CREATE SHADE Especially during the peak sun hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seeking shade is particularly important early in the season — before your skin has acclimated to the sun or while you’re enjoying a tropical vacation. Head for the shade and check your skin periodically for signs of a burn. If your skin is starting to turn pink, the process of burning has already begun, and no amount of sunscreen can stop it. It is crucial that you get out of the sun immediately. We like to keep a tin of After Sun Balm in the fridge or cooler and apply it right after sun exposure. The coolness of the balm feels good and moisturizes while delivering antioxidants to sunparched skin. Contact your local Healthy Planet to learn more: 95 Laird Dr., Leaside Village, 416-422-0505

More than a million people are expected to visit the Beach this weekend to take in the last few days of the 29th annual Beaches International Jazz Festival. One of the most popular events is Streetfest, which will feature 45 bands performing along Queen Street East from Woodbine to Beech avenues on Thursday, July 27, Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29 from 7 to 11 p.m. As a result, there will be a number of traffic and parking restrictions. Specifically, Queen Street East from Woodbine to Beech avenues will be off limits to motorists from 6 p.m. to midnight from July 27 to 29.

Drivers are reminded to pay extra attention to posted signs so they don’t get towed. Anyone whose vehicle does get towed should call A Towing at 416-6564000. During Streetfest, several one-way streets in the area including Kenilworth, Kippendavie, Hambly, Hubbard, Balsam, Fir and Spruce Hill will be operating in both directions. Streetcar service will also be suspended along Queen Street East at 6:10 p.m. at the Neville Park loop on all three evenings. Further, the TTC will be modifying its Main 64 bus route to run southbound on Wineva Avenue to Alfresco Lawn and along Lee Ave to Williamson Road and Southwood Drive. People are being urged to walk, ride or take public

transit. In a note to the community, Const. Jon Morrice of 55 Division’s community response unit said 37 police officers and nine paid duty officers will be patrolling the Beach this weekend. He also noted that some local bars have been granted extended hours to remain open and serve alcohol, but reminded revelers that it is illegal to consume alcohol in public. "Be patient. Be respectful. Be responsible," Morrice wrote. "Folks, it happens every year and we all know it’s coming. There will be inconveniences and annoyances, but we will all get through it as we have the previous 28 times. It’s also an opportunity to showcase an awesome neighbourhood."
