A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help an east-Toronto family struck by tragedy twice this year. On Monday, May 8, Joe Parum, a 44-year-old father of two young sons, died suddenly and unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at his home in southwest Scarborough. At the time of Parum’s death, his partner Courtney Sayliss had just started another round of chemotherapy in her lengthy battle with breast cancer, which came back last fall. Sadly, just over a month later, on Saturday, June 24, Sayliss died, leaving behind the couple’s young sons, Joey, 7, and threeyear-old Jonny. She was 35. The boys are now in the care of their maternal grandmother, Sharron. In the days following Parum’s passing, Sayliss’ longtime best friend, Irie Selkirk, set up a gofundme page to help her close friend and her young sons have some financial security. The goal was to raise $50,000. The Angels for Joey and

We have to step up and make sure they have the opportunities their parents would have given them," Selkirk said. Close family friend Mikki Mikkelstrup said Sayliss was surrounded by love and optimism throughout her cancer journey as well as the loss of her partner. She said there’s no "Band-Aid solution" to help the boys and their grandmother get through this unimaginable tragedy, but many want to do what they can to help.

Jonny page, which can be found online at https:// www.gofundme.com/ courtneysboys, has now evolved into a fundraiser to help the boys and their grandmother. All funds collected will be used to pay for therapy, summer camp, necessities, and a trust fund for Joey and Jonny. "It’s really important for us to maintain our close family members and ensure they’re supported," Selkirk said. BUSINESS

l Continued from page 1

Dan Pearce/Metroland

Top left, long-time employee Trevor Rudd has a laugh with Harold Weisfeld, owner of the Ends discount store Friday, Aug. 4. Weisfeld will be closing the store on Aug. 15 after 35 years of business in the Beach. West near Bathurst Street until the building’s new owner took possession. Initially, he figured he’d continue running a fruit market there like the previous tenant but that owner took the fridge leaving him to quickly come up with Plan B. Never one to run from a challenge, Weisfeld called up friends Bill Foley and Joel Halpert, who both ran dry cleaning businesses, and offered to buy any clothing that had not been picked up at "cleaning cost." Another friend’s father was a retired tailor and Weisfeld hired him to remove the collars of dress shirts to create mandarin style tops. Weisfeld called his venture Ends and figured he’d

ride on the coat tails of Honest Ed’s. As things progressed, he started purchasing good quality used clothing from the Salvation Army and reselling it. At that time, the rag dealers were more interested in buying vintage pieces, so there was a lot of decent newer pieces to choose from. Before long, the enterprising entrepreneur got into new stock. "I’d buy deals on clothing, leftovers, credit cancellations. It could be anything," said Weisfeld, who said he decided to come to the Beach 35 years ago because he felt customers in the area would be open to good deals for less. "I brought Spadina Avenue here. My goal was to make it sloppy but good

quality and at a stupid price and it took off," he said. Weisfeld said the tide started to change drastically about three years ago with the advent of Amazon and other online shopping sites. "People weren’t buying goods like before, especially good quality ones," he said. "I didn’t want to lose out or take a loss, so I decided it was time for a new chapter." Weisfeld’s decision was solidified about nine months ago with the selling of the building that housed his Beach location. Reflecting on the past 35 years, he said one of the best parts of running a retail business has been all

of the amazing people he’s met, including some great employees notably David Dos Ramos, who only recently left after 33 years of service. Another staff member is Trevor Rudd, who works at the Beach location and has only one missed one day of work in 13 years. "He’s the best," said Weisfeld, who said he’s working to help Rudd find another job once Ends closes. "We’re trying to figure something out." As for Rudd, he said working at Ends has been like a family for him. "It’s lots of fun. I enjoy the atmosphere and people are nice," said the lifelong Beach resident. Weisfeld also owns a building at Avenue and

Davenport roads. On the ground floor is another Ends location run by his wife Sharon. The couple live above the store, which they’re looking to eventually rent out. "We want to find the right tenant," said Weisfeld, who lived in the Beach for 25 years but moved to Yorkville about 12 years ago. For now, he said he plans on taking it easy for about six months and hopes to travel down south. He’ll also have more time now for making art, specifically drawing and sculpting. "I just want to thank (the Beach community) so much for giving me my dignity, for allowing me to make a good living for my family and myself," he said.

place has basically been here since I was born," Greenfield said. "The prices are great. Eight bucks for a pair of shorts. You can’t go wrong." Aspen, Colorado resident Tina Taylor was visiting a friend in the area and dropped into Ends. "There’s some great stuff here," said Taylor, who held several pieces of clothing in her arms. "It’s like a treasure hunt and I found my treasure. I think I scored." Harold Weisfeld or Zoltzz as he’s better known, recently sold the building and three nearby properties. `T he deal officially closes at the end of the month. Together with his staff, he’ll have 15 days to empty out the store, which is literally filled to the brim with clothing, accessories, linens, hats, you name it. "The stuff I can’t get rid of, I’ll probably donate to charity," Weisfeld said during a recent interview at the store. He was coy about what the future holds for the highly desirable Beach corner. "I hear they’re making a massage parlour," he smiled. "I’m not too sure. They’re not building." Weisfeld, who quit high school in Grade 11, said he never intended to get into the retail business. Many moons ago when he was 26 years old and "making an OK living" as an artist creating unique wooden sculptures, Weisfeld said his folks sat him down one Friday evening and asked what he was going to do with his life. "I told them one thing, I’d never ever, ever, ever get into retail," he laughed during a recent interview at his Beach location. In the fall of 1982, Weisfeld’s life took that exact direction when a friend approached him about temporarily renting a storefront on Bloor Street

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

The city’s missing people need our help There are a lot of missing people in Toronto. We know, because we write up every police report and share online in the hopes word will spread and that person will be found. Our social feeds are sometimes chock full of missing person stories just due to the volume. It’s a service we justify by imagining what loved ones are going through, not knowing if their child, parent, spouse, or friend is safe. We’re an effective channel of communication and we hope getting word out there fast will mean someone somewhere will notice something, send in a tip, or better, report that they’ve been located. In the best-case scenario, we’re having to update the story soon after publishing because the person’s been found. In one recent incident, a husband apparently went out for an extended period of time without his phone and his wife panicked. Those updates are a relief to publish. Better to be safe than sorry. We’d like to thank our online followers for sharing these stories and photos. Mostly, these are published online at Insidetoronto.com and shared on our Facebook and Twitter page. Sharing with your networks helps get the word out quickly, and time is of the essence in getting people located and home safe. Domingos Martins, the 83-year-old with Alzheimer’s, was miraculously found alive last week after being missing for five days. His family made the search very public and made several appeals for help, even offering up a reward. He was eventually located trapped between a fence and a wall, and was taken to hospital in critical condition. We’ve reported several times on the story of a 31-yearold Duane Montaque who lives with autism and regularly goes missing from the home where he lives with his mother in Scarborough. Once, he stowed away on a train to reach Montreal. Earlier this summer, someone found him in Ottawa. As part of our Sunday Reads online series, once a month we also profile a historic missing child case. Though it’s been years - sometimes decades - those families and the police investigating still hold out hope. When you see these stories, have a read, examine the photos, and share with those you know. The police desperately need tips and need to act fast, so your assistance may be what makes that crucial bit of difference.

City finally unseals Toronto apartment towers Toronto’s tower-in-thepark apartments are products of The Boom, the decade bridging the 1960s and 1970s which saw 140,000 units built. Some sprouted in the suburban middle of nowhere - Rexdale, rural North York, East Scarborough, with big surface parking lots and lawns. Built when even nursing home patients were expected to have cars, they sometimes assigned each apartment two spots. The towers were "sealed in a time warp for 50 years," says Greater Toronto Apartment Association president Daryl Chong. No mixed uses were allowed. Tenants were expected to drive everywhere. Towers aged as the city grew around them. There

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto were poorer tenants, fewer cars. Enter Vinod Soman, urban planner. He’s installing a small grocery store in a Kipling Avenue highrise, expecting to start interior work this week. "Our target is to open this year," Soman says. What made this possible is Residential Apartment Commercial (RAC) zoning, which the city, after years of

delay, launched last month. Finally, if landlords agree, dead spaces in more than 400 modernist towers containing 80,000 units, all pre-1985, can become tutoring centres, daycares, or nail salons. Their lawns or lots can sport outdoor markets. Tenants, if fortunate, may finally get conveniences downtown condominium dwellers take for granted. The closest supermarket to the Rexdale tower Soman’s working on is 900 metres away. Most tenants of the building and its twin take a car there; some take taxis, he says. Soman sees a testing ground. Backed by partners, he’s interviewing tenants, many Middle Eastern or East Indian, about the products he’ll sell.

Some towers had tuck shops, but with interior doors. They were designed for tenants alone, often stocking junk food. Soman wants to sell fresh vegetables, quality stuff, in a shop open to the public. "Let’s hope it works," he says. Around Pape and Cosburn, Jane and Finch, Kipling in Rexdale, Lawrence and Orton Park in Scarborough, East York’s Taylor Massey and Thorncliffe Park neighbourhoods, and Oriole in Don Mills, the city will approach owners, suggesting what RAC zoning can do for them. Entrepreneurs can also knock on management doors, perhaps tenants themselves already "making something cool, exciting or tasty" upstairs, Chong says.
